Thanks to netgalley.com, Kensington Publishing and Lyrical Press for the advance ARC for my honest review.
This was my first read from the author Leo J. Maloney, while I enjoyed 'Storm Front' the writing kept me turn pages, did like the tie-in with WW2 in the pacific with Japan, it was predictable, basically a formula read and good conquers evil, while battling Ares.
While it's part of the Alex Morgan series, you have her mother Jenny Morgan, father Dan Morgan, his partner Pete Conley, his girlfriend Dani and Alicia Schmitt a character from the Dan Morgan series.
It goes back and forth between Alex and Alicia, then the two couples making it more like two blended short stories verse an intertwining story.
Definitely this is one author that a reader could read in between releases from your favorite authors in the Action Adventure and terrorist-espionage genres.
Very enjoyable read - Maloney has done a good job with the spin-off tying disparate pieces together in the larger story.
First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Leo J. Maloney, Kensington Books and Lyrical Press for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Leo J. Maloney is back with another thriller, keeping things in the Morgan family. His younger protagonist, Alex, is full of energy, as she tries to fill the shoes of her father while working for Zeta Group. After being the target of an attack by Ares, Alex Morgan realises that her life is in danger. What better way to protect herself than to agree to an undercover mission on a cruise ship, where Ares is set to strike? Alex will have to infiltrate those who seek to cause harm and wrest control back for Zeta before it’s too late. However, she is not the only Morgan on a mission, one that could end in death! Maloney does well to keep the action high and the twists plentiful.
Alex Morgan loves being an operative for Zeta Group, even if it means that she is sometimes compared to her father, Dan. When Alex is almost killed in an explosion at work, she comes to terms that it was likely Ares who are responsible, Zeta’s enemy, trying to do away with the young foot soldier. Faced with a security issue, Alex agrees to go undercover on a cruise ship in the Coral Sea, hoping to infiltrate the group and likely discover what Ares has in store.
After some rigourous training, Alex is placed aboard the shop and slowly works her way into discovering what is going on, which includes an attach on the ship by would-be pirates. However, she is not going to take this sitting down and shows true grit during the entire ordeal.
Meanwhile, Dan Morgan has learned of his daughter’s mission and has one of his own to handle in Australia. He’s working as best he can to uncover truths many would like buried, all while Zeta Group tries to juggle the intel that is flowing in. With two Morgans working so efficiently, Ares does not stand a chance, or do they?
Time is ticking on this mission and neither Dan nor Alex can risk failure, as it could cost them their lives. It will require patience and some real dedication, something that is woven into the fabric of the Morgans from a young age. However, one wrong move could prove deadly. Maloney does well developing this new generation of Morgan intel operative, which is sure to impress fans of his other works.
I have long admired the work of Leo J. Maloney and the attention to detail he puts into his books. There is something exciting with each piece, which they all tie into together nicely. This book flowed well, with an easy narrative and straightforward chapters. I found it waned at times for my liking, but it could be a slight reading slump in which I find myself.
Alex Morgan is a great character who has come into her own over the last while. She has been forced to live in her father’s shadow, at least since she knew about his work with Zeta Group. Now, she is on her won and facing danger every day. There is some great character development throughout the piece and the reader gets to know a little more about Alex, as well as how she ticks. I am eager to see more as time gores on and this new series comes into its own.
Leo J. Maloney uses this series twist to his advancing, easing Alex Morgan into the role of protagonist without pushing Dan out of the limelight completely. The narrative works well and keeps the reader on their toes, as plot twists arise throughout with great regularlity. Shorter chapters help keep the flow and things are never in a true lull. All that being said, I could not connect as effectively as I would have liked throughout this piece, feeling things weren’t as impactful as they could have been. Perhaps I am simply having a tough time of it lately, but I felt there was a missing link that I cannot properly identify. We’ll see if this was simply a blip when next Alex Morgan graces us with her presence.
Kudos, Mr. Maloney, for another great novel. I am eager to see what you have to come in the next few months.
While "Storm Front" by Leo Maloney uses a story format similar to several other novels, it is well written and of high adventure. The basic story line is that there is a nongovernmental organization operating outside the bounds of traditional pathways to get the bad people. In this novel there is another organization, which is operating in the shadows, who seems bent on world domination but seems to be unconnected to any traditional world government. They are just bad!!
The quasi-US group is called Zeta and has a powerful female as the head. She has accumulated and trained numbers of operatives to fight the evil Ares-group. In this particular story the cast of main characters are two husband/wife teams (one named Morgan) and a daughter of the Morgan family operatives named Alex.
The primary story is focused on Alex who is serving undercover on a cruise ship in the Coral Sea. She gets into all sorts of harrowing adventures when the Zeta attempt a takeover of the ship. Outnumbered and outgunned all might seem lost but never underestimate the daughter of Dan Morgan! Alex is able to cobble together a force of mostly civilians who can put up a good fight; but will it be enough?
Fast paced and an enjoyable read. Definitely hard to put down!!
Thank you to NetGalley, Kensington Books and the author for the opportunity to read and review "Storm Front" by Leo J. Maloney.
"Storm Front" is the latest instalment in the Alex Morgan/Zeta series but it's really a combination Dan Morgan/Pete Conley and Alex Morgan book, with assistance from Jenny Morgan, Pete's girlfriend Dani, and Alicia Schmitt who we met in previous books. And Diana Bloch of Zeta headquarters.
This time, it's possible terror on the high seas - courtesy, of course, of Ares, Zeta's archenemy.
Shortly after an attack on her life, courtesy of the above mentioned Ares, Alex Morgan is apprised that her next task will be to avert catastrophe on the high seas - as crew on a cruise ship, the same ship where co-incidentally Alicia Schmitt is overseeing the installation of a new security system.
Zeta having credible evidence that the ship might be the target of a terror incident, Alex works to become one of the crew, while being constantly on the lookout for Ares' infiltration.
In the meantime, Dan Morgan and Pete Conley are working to find and neutralize an Ares stronghold on an island in the same vicinity.
Charged with the same action as all of the previous Alex Morgan and Dan Morgan books, this one does not disappoint. Recommended.
Alex continues to mature as a character of her own, emerging from the shadow of her father. Bringing in familiar as well as new characters, the author has once again created an exciting story.
If you like secret organisation and action then you should try this series from Leo J. Maloney. Storm Front is the latest book about Alex Morgan Zeta agent and daughter of Dan Morgan who has his own series. This time the fight against ARES continues and it involves both fathe and daughter and is a wild ride. Alex goes undecover on a cruise ship that is rumored to be the target of an attack. At the same time her father takes a break from his vacation and seeks out ARES around the Solomon islands. Some really good scenes and a lot of action which includes a brand new weapon designed by Shepherd at Zetas headquarter. I had a really good time reading this book and recommend it to all thriller fans. A big thanks to @netgalley #Netgalley and @KensingtonBooks #KensingtonBooks for giving me this advance copy of #StormFront and to @LeoJMaloney for making this stuff up.
