The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews is a 2022 St. Martin’s Press publication.
As the blurb states- The Summer begins with MKA…
Because this is a perfect book for a day at the beach!
Hattie Kavanaugh, a young widow, takes over her husband’s family-owned home restoration business. But after sinking all her money into a real loser, she’s ready to throw in the towel. But, as fate would have it, Hattie is offered a spot on a new reality show, renovating a beach house, called ‘Homewreckers’….
This opportunity could salvage her reputation, and help her recover her losses...
This is a delightful romance. It’s cute, smart, witty and fun- and will be a special treat for anyone who likes house flipping reality shows.
But this story also has a dark side… a cold case involving the disappearance of the high school football coach's wife, seventeen years prior.
Hattie and her best friend, Cass, get involved in the investigation after their beach house restoration unwittingly exposes new evidence about the case, amid a string of obvious attempts to sabotage the project.
The two threads are separate, but also intermingle, as the mystery could have negative connotations for the show.
I thought the author did a great job of creating the reality show atmosphere, which felt very authentic, especially all the behind the scenes dramas and manipulations.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I’m a little late to the MKA party-and have only read a handful of her books-
But better late than never! Can’t wait to read more of her books!
4.5 stars
I adored this book by Mark Kay Andrews! About half way into it, I was unsure how I felt. There were quite a few different elements of the story happening and I was worried there was just too much going on. She tied everything together so well and I ended up really enjoying it.
Review of Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I am a huge fan of Mary Kay Andrews. I have read her books for years and I absolutely love her Savannah settings. We lived near Savannah at one point and it’s one of my favorite places to visit. Her books seem to get better and better and I love the mystery elements that she is incorporating. This one is a fun romance but also a murder mystery as well as a book about grief and moving on. Not to mention the HGTV home renovation vibes along with reality show tv. It’s got it all. This one is out now!
Quick synopsis:
Hattie is a widower who flips houses with her father in law and best friend. They are financially struggling when a reality tv show producer stumbles upon her latest renovation project and just like that she’s on tv! Then they discover a body at the new property complicating everything.
Thank you so much to @netgalley and @stmartinspress for my copy.

An amazing book by Mary Kay Andrews…..loved the whole premise behind the plot with just a bit of mystery thrown in and surprises at every turn. The biggest surprise was the ending which I didn’t figure out which I loved. Five stars for an excellent summertime read!
Loved loved loved. All HGTV junkies need to RUN, not walk, to by MKA’s summer novel, The Homewreckers. A little bit thriller, a little bit mystery and a lotta bit (yes I know this isn’t a word) fun. Let The Home Wreckers kick your summer off right!!! #buyherbookdamnit
Hattie restores historical houses in Savannah, Georgia. When her latest project goes belly-up, she finds herself taking on a job as host of a home improvement reality show and trying to flip a condemned house that's surrounded in a decades old mystery. Add into it a fake romance cooked up for ratings Hattie has her hands full.
Loved this cast of characters, and loved the setting of Tybee Island. This was a really fun read.
One of the things I look forward to every summer is the newest book by Mary Kay Andrews and The Homewreckers is another hit!
I really enjoyed my time with Hattie and I thought the story was unique enough to be engaging but comforting enough to be an enjoyable escape. I also loved the remodeling aspect of the story and learning new things about old homes (the razor disposal thing was new to me!).
As always, the setting of her books is top notch and is again with this book. I've never been to this part of the country but I can always imagine myself right where she says we are!
Overall this is the perfect book for summer! Intrigue, a wee bit of romance and a bit of escapism!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an eARC copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
This book was a fun treat! I loved it! It was a good reset after I read a heavier book. It kept me flipping pages well past my bedtime!!
The Homewreckers was a fun read and I especially enjoyed the reality TV show setting. I was immediately sucked into the mystery of the beach house and didn't mind that the romance storyline was quite slow. I enjoyed the friendship between heroine Hattie and her best friend Cass, and Cass's mom was a hoot.
I have enjoyed quite a few novels by Mary Kay Andrew’s over the years … and each one is better than the one before. I really enjoyed the tater aspect of her most recent book! I can say for certain this is a page turner and will be a great summer hit!! I loved that it was not overly predictable and kept me guessing!
The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews is a romantic mystery with an interesting cast of characters and a plot that will keep you engaged until the very end. Hattie Kavanaugh learned all aspects of restoring old houses from the bottom up and continued to work with her father-in-law after she was widowed. When she loses big on a house flip and signs up to be on a beach house renovation reality show to redeem herself, she may have taken on more than she and her crew can handle. Then there are the complicating personal relationships that come with the new gig. Will her self-absorbed costar be her new love interest? Where does the annoying producer fit into the picture then? Add in a local missing person cold case that escalates into a murder investigation and you have all the elements for a riveting read.
Although I agree with several other reviewers who noted that the beginning was rather slow, a lot of background essential to the storyline was provided in those first chapters. Hattie, her friend Cass, and her father-in-law Tug were engaging and so very likeable from the onset. Mo Lopez, the producer, grew on me as the story evolved and eventually became a favorite. Trae, the self-absorbed costar, was always the character that I didn’t trust and could never quite like. The supporting characters were interesting and three dimensional.
The house and the Tybee Island setting were as essential to the story as the characters and in a manner became characters. The sense of place was so strong I could almost smell the salt water and feel the wind whipping around the house.. (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy and all opinions are my own.) All in all I Ioved this book and hope that there are more to come!
Another good book by Mary Kay Andrews. Think Extreme home makeover with a mystery thrown in there. Hattie Kavanaugh restores homes with her father in law. When a reality show comes to town and wants to film her doing house restoration, she wavers, but eventually agrees....then the mystery begins. MKA books are the perfect beach read---when her books come out I know it's getting close to time for my beach vacation. Always look forward to her books--recommend this one!! Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC.
The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews is part suspense, part rom com, part HGTV. Hattie Kavanaugh and her crew renovate historic houses in Savannah, Georgia. Hattie's background is loaded with loss, predominately her husband dying in a motorcycle accident and her working for her father-in-law.
Hattie's latest renovation takes a financial hit and she needs to bail and rebuild her finances quickly. An opportunity arises that could be the answer; A reality-show company approaches her to complete a renovation on a short timeline. Her finances could be supported by product placement. With any renovation, unexpected issues arise, but no one would have thought a wallet found in the wall would lead to a murder mystery case from decades earlier.
I enjoyed the characters' backstories and how MKA's own renovation sparked the idea for this book.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for a digital ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Hattie is such a fantastic character and I adored her so much! From the get go, I was intrigued by this fierce chick with a big heart. I loved following her story. The house flip aspect was interesting and I loved the premise. Homewreckers made me teary, made me smile, made me angry, and made me laugh. Its everything you hope to get from a MKA book! This will be a great summer read.
The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews 🛠
Hattie Kavanaugh is a sweet, hard-working woman who lost her husband in a motorcycle accident. She works renovating homes and decided to spend the life insurance money on homes she could renovate and sell later. But the last house she purchased ended up being a disaster.
Just when she thought she’d lost it all, she’s offered a spot on a new beach house renovation reality show and even though she doesn’t love the idea, she takes it. When they start renovating the house, they find a wallet that belonged to a woman that had disappeared years ago.
The Homewreckers is an intricate story, part romance, part whodunnit. Both the romantic parts and the mystery aspects kept me invested throughout the story. Both storylines were very well developed and neatly wrapped up at the end.
This is my first Mary Kay Andrews book and I really enjoyed it! I’m looking forward to reading more books by her.
Thank you @stmartinspress and @netgalley for the advanced copy of this wonderful book.
3.5 HGTV Meets Mystery/Romance Stars

As an HGTV junkie, any redo show has my eyes on it. When I read this was a combination of "The Money Pit"/ with a dash of mystery plus romance, I was all in.
This has much for it, a little slow start but once it gets going, it gave me a lot to follow. There is a mix of characters and this could be a strong summer read.
I’ve read Mary Kay Andrews books in the past and really enjoyed them. The books I read had a charming Southern setting and a lot of romance. So when I started reading The Homewreckers, I didn’t expect to get a bonus: a mystery.
There was so much to love about this one: Hattie and her scrappiness, Hattie and Cass and their amazing friendship, Hattie’s dog Ribsy, the (obvious) sparks between Hattie and Mo, and the community of Tybee Island, Georgia. The mystery – the decades-old disappearance of Cass and Hattie’s teacher – was an interesting and well-developed part of the plot.
Despite the mystery in this one, it was still cozy, and the book was also filled with humor.
If you’re looking for a romance that is a whole lot more, definitely try The Homewreckers!
What a great story set in the historical city of Savannah GA and Tybee Island. Hattie loves to restore old neglected houses along with her father in law Tug and her best friend Cas. They may have bit off more than they can chew when they are approached by a reality show who wants them to complete a house in record time, unfortunately someone may not want them to get the house finished. Deep dark secrets and danger plague the job site. This story has mystery, romance and a reality show, what more could you want?? Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first Mary Kay Andrews book. I've heard such good things but was really disapointed in this one. Flipping houses and falling in love was the perfect plot! I felt disconnected to the main character and her experiences. I think too many small details and day to day things going on to connect with the story line. Felt weighed down by details of the house. No overall life insights. The romance came too late into the novel. Not great supporting characters.
I'm very sorry to say I didn't like this one.
If you love Mary Kay Andrews, you will love The Homewreckers. Mary Kay Andrews is Southern comfort at its finest. Her books are like banana pudding-you know what you are getting, you won’t be stuffed after eating (reading), but you will be satisfied.
The Homewreckers is about Hattie Kavanaugh, a widowed general contractor living in a small town in Georgia. She flips houses. Enter Mauricio (Mo) Lopez. Mo is a TV producer who films shows for the “HGTV” channel. Mo is producing a show called Saving Savannah, and wants Hattie to star in it. His boss, however, proposes The Homewreckers, where Hattie and designer, Trae Bartholomew, will work together (possibly fall in love??), to restore an old historic home.
All goes according to plan until a wallet is found in the wall of the bathroom. A wallet belonging to a woman who disappeared over 17 years ago. And when her body is found, the search for a killer begins.
I enjoyed The Homewreckers. It maybe wasn’t one of my favorite Mary Kay Andrews books, but it’s enjoyable. You know what you’re getting with MKA, and she never disappoints. .
