A long-time Mary Kay Andrews fan, I was happy to read this latest entry in her publications. Ms. Andrews sets the stage in Savannah and Tybee Island with Hattie Kavanaugh, a young widow who has gone into the restoration/renovation business with her father-in-law, Tug. After choosing a house that was a larger and more expensive project than anticipated, Hattie tries to make some additional money by agreeing to be part of a home improvement show being filmed. She takes on more than she bargained for when a body turns up on a Tybee Island property they are working for the show. It becomes even more complicated when Hattie has personal ties to the victim. She finds herself busy dodging deadlines, wanna-be suitors, and, the murderer.
The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews is a fun summer read. On Tybee Island stands an old house that is in really bad shape. Hattie Kavanaugh is determined to make up for her previous bad judgment in buying a house that was a money pit. She has been working for her father-in-law’s company for years and since her husband was killed has filled in to the role of the son.
Hattie was “found” by Mo, a producer of reality shows. He convinced her to participate in a show called The Homewreckers while they are fixing up the cottage on Tybee. A number of various challenges appear almost from the start including citations for cutting down trees in the driveway to a self centered co host. However, finding the wallet of a missing teacher from over 20 years ago turns into a major mystery that ties up with the rehab of the house. Enter Detective Makarowicz who is on a mission to track down what happened to the woman. The storylines intertwine and leave you wondering. Hattie is a strong major character and I love how she is both a hard worker, but a fallible character who self doubts her relationships.
Summer can begin, I have read my newest Mary Kay Andrews book! I find her books get me ready for warm days and feel my feet in the sand. The Homewreckers was a great read with a fun story line with twists and and turns.
Mary Kay Andrews just has a way of making me want to keep reading. The Homewreckers was just another one of her many books that I enjoyed. This is a great summer read with love, mystery and drama.
I really enjoyed this book. It was definitely different than I expected, but in a good way! I loved all of the storylines and how they weaved together throughout the book. The southern summer vibes make me want to visit Savannah ASAP. Even though it was a little long, there wasn’t a part of the book that wasn’t significant or that I’d take out. I definitely recommend this easy summer read!!
Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress for the advanced copy!
This was the perfect book to read when the weather was cold and wet and I needed an escape. Mary Kay Andrews came to my rescue - again. This had a great setting - Savannah and Tybee Island and a great cast of characters. Hattie is at a point in her life where she feels like she has bitten off more than she could chew and she fears that her last renovation, which didn't go well, might destroy the family business. Her confidence has been shaken but she sees there may be a way to find the money to make things right. She becomes part of a tv reality show renovating an old house, a house that will reveal some surprising secrets.
I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say that Mary Kay Andrews has penned another winner. There is laughter, romance and a mystery to keep the reader glued to the pages. Forget about whatever else is going on around you, just settle down and enjoy a great read. The dishes can wait and who really needs a bedtime? This was the perfect reading escape.
My thanks to the publisher St. Martin's and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
4.25/5
In my world it is never summer until I read a book by Mary Kay Andrews, and as soon as I saw the cover of The Homewreckers I just knew I was going to love it. I got started reading MKA's books after she started adding some mystery to her romance books, and this really took me back to the earlier stories I read. The last couple have felt a bit too long for me, but I didn't have any issues with the length of The Homewreckers at all and found myself completely lost in Hattie's story. As per usual, MKA made the setting feel alive, and I could practically picture myself right there in Savannah, GA with the characters. The cover reminds me a bit of The Newcomer, while the storyline reminded me a touch of The Honey-Don't List in terms of getting a behind the scenes look at what goes into a TV show.
The mystery aspect of The Homewreckers was great, and I loved watching as Hattie went sleuthing trying to figure everything out. I am not going to say what since the synopsis on Goodreads doesn't mention it, and I think it is best to find out for yourself! The audiobook is also a standout and is narrated by Kathleen McInerney. She was perfection for this story and for Hattie, and between how much I loved listening to her and how much I loved the book in general, I finished the whole thing in just a day. It is still on the longer side with the audio being over 14 hours and the book itself being over 400 pages, but I didn't think it felt like it at all. I loved almost every single one of the characters, and there is a whole lot of emotion, heart, and humor making its way into the storyline. I loved every moment of The Homewreckers, and if you are looking for a gripping and luscious beach read, this is it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
When Hattie Kavanaugh’s husband dies young, she continues to work for Kavanaugh and Sons with her father-in-law, Tug, buying and restoring old historic homes in Savannah. It’s a world she’s pours her heart and soul into. When approached by Mo Lopez, a Hollywood producer, to star in a reality TV show sharing her passion of saving Savannah, Hattie is reluctant at first, but is swayed and reluctantly accepts. While Mo has his agenda, the network has a bigger one and soon Saving Savannah is called The Homewreckers complete with a dreamy designer that is suppose to bring sparks to the show. Sparks do fly, but some of them are arson. Hattie purchased a derelict old beach house on Tybee Island to restore for the show, but the restoration is immediately off to a bad start, this project just might get the best of her and it’s being broadcast for the whole world to see! No press is bad press, but when a mystery from the past comes back to haunt them, can anything else go wrong? With deadlines looming and tempers flaring, will Hattie be able to save her reputation and pull off Homewreckers and will the mysterious disappearance of Lanier Ragan finally be put to rest? Andrews brings historic Tybee Island and Savannah to life while weaving in a mysterious disappearance, an inside look at a reality show and an opportunity for second chances. With a cast of characters that you will come to a love and hate in equal measures, Homewreckers is the perfect beach read!
If you’re looking for the perfect summer beach read, this is it. A great mix of romance and mystery and reality tv. I was hooked from the first chapter! I found Hattie really likeable and enjoyed how the story wrapped up in the end. I can’t believe this is Andrews’ 30th book but only the first one I’ve read - I’m definitely checking out her other books!
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
She does it again! Mary Kay Andrews is always my first read of May! Its been a tradition for more years than I can rememember. She never disappoints. Always puts me in the summer mood. This one has romance, mystery, southern charm, home renovations. It was a well-developed story with many characters, but they all work. She just does it every time! Perfect book for your summer beach bag or pool side.
I loved reading this romance story. This is an author that I have loved reading from the first book I picked up. I enjoyed how her writing skills and attention to details add so much to the story. The story and the characters really pop. This is a story about getting a second chance at love but when it presents itself will you take it. I enjoyed how the characters were able to pull me into the story from the start. They have great growth and their chemistry is exciting. They are creative, engaging and supportive toward each other. This is a great story that was easy and entertaining to read. I enjoyed how the author was able to make the story realistic and brought to life. I highly recommend reading this book, what will fate have instore.
Hattie Kavanaugh is a woman working in a man’s world. A building contractor, she’s passionate about restoring the grand old homes of Savannah, Georgia. But a money mess finds her saying yes to starring in a new reality show. Toss in a hunky costar, a cold case, a body, and more than one woman’s fair share of mayhem and mischief, and you’ve got the perfect beach read.
Mary Kay Andrews delivers with just the right balance of romance, danger, and Southern sass.

Looking for your next beach read...or anytime read? I found it! "Homewreckers" by Mary Kay Andrews is why we read at the beach :) Harriet, "Hattie", Kavanaugh is a young widow who's been taught the construction trade by her father-in-law, Tug Kavanaugh, of Kavanugh & Son. She takes a chance when she's offered the opportunity to renovate an old beach house and appear on HPTV Network's new show, "Homewreckers". There are ups and downs during the reno, including producer, Mo Lopez, and handsome co-host Trae Bartholomew. There's a murder mystery to be solved and old "friendships" to be resolved. Charming, interesting and entertaining. This book is why we read Mary Kay Andrews. I can't recommend it enough. My thanks to Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of this novel, published on 5/3/22. You will love it!
No book report here, others have detailed plot and the jacket cover gives a great description. Great beach or anytime read. This book gave a little different vibe than some of her more recent books. It reminds me of her earlier books that had more mystery to them. Very likeable characters, descriptive scenery, great story with a little 'edge' and mystery included. Read and enjoy.
I was provided an advanced reader copy and was under no obligation to provide a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
Many thanks to the author, St. Martin's Press & NetGalley for allowing me to read this book.
I enjoyed this book so much!! There was a little bit of everything in it. It had romance, a murder mystery and to keep things fun a home renovation tv show is being filmed around it all. Hattie is a contractor who gets discovered by a producer who creates a TV show for her to flip houses in Savannah. She isn't comfortable in front of the camera, but in a financial bind so she agrees to find a house to flip and allow the flip to be filmed. During the reconstruction all sorts of things start happening, a dumpster fire, a wallet is found from a woman who has been missing for many years and the hits just keep coming. I really liked that a lot of things were going on in this story. Not just a romance or a mystery. I was enjoying it so much I didn't want it to end. I really liked the characters and the small town atmosphere in the southern town.
As Hattie is learning to live life on her own she tries discovers a fixer upper house she is falling in love. As a widow at 25 she has kept her heart hidden from everyone. She is continuing to move forward towards a new life.
Great book! I couldn’t put it down.
Mary Kay Andrews always writes some of the best summer fiction - in my humble opinion. I don't remember any book I haven't liked. This one was no exception.
The author has taken the home renovation shows on TV for a ride! The action revolves around Hattie Kavanaugh who is a restorer of old homes needing tender loving care. She loves her job! However, she has an opportunity to restore one particular house with the help of a TV show. Because she really wants to give the house another chance, she takes the opportunity and the action begins to happen.
There is a lot to this book that I don't want to give away, so my review stops here. This is a great book for the beach, swimming pool or just a lazy afternoon reading in the sunshine. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I totally enjoyed all the different aspects of this book – humor, romance and mystery. Hattie works with her deceased husband’s family in construction. Her main interest is taking historic homes and restoring them to their former glory. She’s very discouraged as her latest project isn’t working out and will be a loss to the company. She’s determined to use her own money to purchase a house and make a profit. She is overheard by a producer who develops shows for a home improvement type network. He works on his idea, titling it Saving Savannah. Hattie reluctantly goes along with his proposal only because it will help her budget to do the job properly. In comes a Hollywood type host to work with her, much to her dismay. She wants to do the job; not play nice with someone she considers pretty much useless. Unexplained issues crop up to threaten the success of both the show and the project. It kept my interest from beginning to end.

Thank you so much to the publishers for sending me an arc of this book in exchange for my honest review! MKA just makes you feel like summer is here when you read one of her books! I found this book really funny and the characters were so lovable! Much better than The Newcomer so if you didn't like that one don't write her off yet!
This book is @marykayandrews at her finest! I always love how the setting plays such a big part in her books, and I'm glad to see this one head back to Savannah. The mystery element thrown in was great and didn't overwhelm the other parts of the book. There was a lot happening and it all worked. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 this would be a perfect beach read.
Still grieving the loss of her husband seven years after he was killed in a motorcycle accident, Hattie is finally ready to step back into life, when she is presented with an opportunity to star in a home renovation show. This is a great beach read with well developed characters, set in a great location, and a storyline that features part home renovation drama, part mystery, and part romance.
