The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews is a very fun read! It combines a good mystery and home-renovation-reality television programming. I love both, so it was easy to dig into this book.
The family-owned restoration business goes south when Hattie takes over after her husband’s death, but her luck turns when she is offered a spot on a home renovation television show. The stakes are high, and Hattie really needs a win. Ms. Andrews’ writing is engaging. She created a realistic-feeling reality television program scenario. I loved the mystery story thread of the novel as well. Whether it involves a mystery or not, old houses always have a story to tell!
The house Hattie is renovating coughs up the wallet of a long-missing local woman, and from there, the story really takes off. Hattie and her BFF, Cass, are thrown into the middle of the mystery, and Ms. Andrews wonderfully intersects these two storylines. If all that isn’t enough to keep a reader engaged, there is a bit of romance thrown into the mix in this Southern Chick-lit/Romantic Suspense.
The Homewreckers is yet another fun read from Mary Kay Andrews that had me smiling and chuckling while reading.
🌟🌟🌟🌟 read
This book has something for everyone, its a little HGTV mixed with a murder-mystery and of course there’s romance.
Hattie has been in home renovation since after high school, so when she is approached to do a television show she isn’t all the thrilled. When they find a dead body during demolition, this story gets even more complicated. I personally haven’t had the time to read Mary Kay Andrews first book but this one was a hit for me.
What a great story full of mystery, intrigue, flipping houses, wonderful characters, and a missing woman. It was nice that it was set on Tybee Island too. This book started out with quite a prologue that instantly grabbed my attention and pulled me into the drama. I enjoyed how the story centered around a tv home reality show about flipping houses. It was funny how Mo, the man who came up with the idea for the show, met Hattie.
I liked that the book was full of interesting characters, Some were down to earth and some had big egos. They all jelled perfectly together in this story.
I found it interesting when Hattie started renovating the Tybee Island cottage and ran into some bad karma or juju. Throw in a missing woman and I could not stop reading and trying to solve the mystery of what happened seventeen years ago. I enjoyed the potential for romance between Hattie and some of the others working on the show, including Mo.
I really liked how the story ended. I was pleased for Hattie, and all the loose ends were neatly tied up with a few twists for fun. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
SYNOPSIS: “Never love something that can’t love you back.” Hattie, a 25-year-old contractor based out of Savannah, GA receives this advice from her father-in-law. She doesn’t take it and falls for a house that turns into nothing but a money pit. A huge opportunity comes when Mo, a Hollywood producer, begs Hattie to star in a new TV show of flipping old houses, The Homewreckers. So much drama surrounds filming a tv show, Hattie’s potential love interests, family dynamics, AND an unsolved murder.
REVIEW: Flipping houses and finding true love?? What is better?? This is going to be such a good summer read!! This was the first Mary Kay Andrews book I have read but it will not be my last. I really enjoyed everything about this book - the characters, the setting, the story line.
Hattie is one of the most relatable MC I have read in a while - MKA makes it so easy to relate to her, with the way she handles all of life’s ups and downs. There are multiple characters but I didn’t have any issues keeping up with them because the detail and backgrounds of those characters were so well developed. The only thing I wished for this book, was that the romance/love interest aspect was more of a larger part of the story - just because I was so invested in Hattie’s story and wanted more!
Overall, this was such a fun, quick read that will be perfect for summer reading!!
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for the ARC!!
I absolutely adore this author so was very excited to get an eARC copy of her new book and was not disappointed!
Set in Georgia, she paints a beautiful picture of life in the south. Like some of her other works, it’s hard to put a genre on this one as there is everything from mystery and romance and contemporary that keeps you wanting to read until the very end. The characters are amazing and the flow of the story is flawless. If you love all of this along with reality TV and home renos, then this will not disappoint.
I would definitely definitely recommend for your summer reading list.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this eARC in return for my honest opinion.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I absolutely loved this book! The right combination of plot, characters, and setting create the perfect summer beach read. I was sorry when it ended, and I would absolutely read future books starring Hattie rehabbing houses. I really liked Hattie’s friend and coworker, Cass, who’s funny and sassy. Trae is a great foil and sort of villain for Hattie. The only quibble I have is that the chemistry between Hattie and her love interest isn’t fleshed out enough.
There’s some sweet romance and fabulous house reno ideas too!
5 enthusiastic stars.
Blurb:
Summer begins with Mary Kay Andrews, in this delightful summer book about flipping houses, and finding true love.
Hattie Kavanaugh went to work helping clean up restored homes for Kavanaugh & Son Restorations at 18; married the boss’s son at 20; and was only 25 when her husband, Hank, was killed in a motorcycle accident.
Broken hearted, but determined to continue the business of their dreams, she takes the life insurance money, buys a small house in a gentrifying neighborhood, flips it, then puts the money into her next project. But that house is a disaster and a money-loser, which rocks her confidence for years to come. Then, Hattie gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: star in a beach house renovation reality show called The Homewreckers, cast against a male lead who may be a love interest, or may be the ultimate antagonist. It's a question of who will flip, and who will flop, and will Hattie ever get her happily-ever-after.
Filled with Mary Kay Andrews's trademark wit, warmth, junking trips, and house porn, The Homewreckers is a summer beach delight.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thoroughly enjoyable read! This book has it all - a little bit of comedy, a little bit of mystery, a little bit of romance and a little bit of mayhem. Great characters, fun story, fast read! Definitely recommend.
Thank you #netgalley and #stmartinspress for the eARC.
Mary Kay Andrews has such a range. Some books are cute little hallmark movie books and others have so much substance! This was a hefty read at over 400 pages, but it was still such an easy read. This book was a good mix of MKA's typical books, but is also a thriller while also covering so many real and relatable topics like grief, family, romance, small towns, flipping houses! This was such a fun escape that made you feel like you were in this small town!
Hattie is a contractor in Savannah who loves restoring old houses. She is approached by Mo, a reality TV producer to do a show on her newest project. Needing the money she says yes without knowing all that’s about to come with the reality tv show and the condemned beach house she just bought. Did I mention there’s a dead body too?
I loved The Newcomer so when I saw The Homewreckers, I needed it. I was slightly let down by this one because I felt like Andrew’s focused way too much on the renovation and the reality TV show. I wanted more about the dead body, history about the house and the romance between Hattie and Mo, which practically didn’t even exist until the last chapter and they were magically in love.
I will say, the audiobook was great! Kathleen McInerney did an amazing job at narrating the book!
Thank you @stmartinspress and @macmillianaudio for gifting me an ALC and eARC in exchange for my honest review.
The Homewreckers is my first time reading Mary Kay Andrews and what a great start! We meet Hattie Kavanaugh, a DIY, no bullshit badass contractor based in Savannah, GA. Working with her father-in-law, Hattie brings new life to old homes. Unfortunately, she has a bit of problem with caring just a bit too much. After a failed project, Hattie has a chance meeting with a TV producer, Mo Lopez, that has the potential to flip her business into a whole new. With this new proposition, we get to meet a whole cast of characters. During demolition of her latest flip, a wallet from a decades missing beloved teacher is found, it’s curious locations brings a lot more questions than answers.
I just loved this book that was a great mix between a who-dun-it mystery and reality tv show shenanigans. I thought the book moved well and the short chapters made it easy to pick up for a quick read. I didn’t expect the mystery and investigation portion of this book but I loved it! It was such a interesting element to see unfold while Hattie sanded floors and painted trim.
Unfortunately, some relations between characters advanced so quickly, I thought I skipped a part of the book. I would have loved to see the relationship build more over the course of the book. But despite this, I really enjoyed this read and will definitely pick up another from Mary Kay Andrews.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for access to an advance copy so I could provide a review.
This was another entertaining read from Mary Kay Andrews. I have read many of her books over the years and always enjoy her writing style. Her main character, Hattie, is a tough, real female that you want to root for. She flips houses and ends up on a reality show based on Tybee Island, Georgia. There is romance, friendship, house flipping challenges, and a murder mystery that all comes together and flows great. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC. Great summer read!
Where to begin?!
This was such an entertaining read. Romance with a twist of friendship, murder and home improvement projects.
The craft behind Mary Kay Andrews did not disappoint and she delivered by making all these different plots mold into the perfect combination.
Mary K.ay Andrews has done it again. I have never been disappointed in one of her books. This one had a different vibe and house flippers and DIYers would love it even more.
Hattie had a rough start to her happily ever after when her husband passes away. Going on a beach house renovation reality tv show may be just what she needs to get her back to her happily ever after.
I am a huge Mary Kay Andrews fan! I have been reading her books for many years (way before I started bookstagram) and they are like the quintessential summer reads!
MKA’s books are always a little genre-defying which is what makes them appeal to me so much. There’s a little women’s fiction, a little romance, and a little mystery and it is a winning combo. The Homewreckers had all of that and also featured a quaint “beachy” setting and the restoration of a historic beach house straight out of an HGTV show!
While The Homewreckers had SO much going for it, including my deep and abiding love for MKA, it missed the mark. I loved the concept, but the execution just did not work for me. There was so much being squeezed into the story which made it feel scattered and a tad too long. It was too heavy on the details of the home renovation and the TV show they were filming and there was not enough of the romance for it to feel even remotely believable. The audiobook was a nice, easy listen and I loved being about to read with dual formats. Overall, it was enjoyable and would be fun to read on the beach or poolside.

Hattie Kavanaugh is a Savannah native whose life has been turned upside down a couple of times. Her husband died tragically in a motorcycle accident. Hattie works with her father in law Tug restoring and flipping old homes. A chance overheard conversation in a café leads Mo, a television producer to come upon Hattie's latest project home. Mo approaches Hattie with a new television idea, HomeWreckers. Hattie is hesitant but feels like this could be a good opportunity for her little town. Unfortunately the home they choose harbors a 17-year old secret. Will the mystery disappearance of Hattie's favorite teacher finally be solved?
I loved loved this mystery, chick-lit novel from Mary Kay Andrews. This novel had it all. I was shocked, saddened, surprised, and in love with these characters. From the descriptions of the house I felt like I was there. I love seeing old homes restored so this novel was right up my alley. This is the perfect beach read!!
MKA does not disappoint! She combines my two favorite things in this book.....home renovation and a great mystery! Once you start this book you won't be able to put it down. Every time you think you know who committed this 20 year old murder, nope....it's not them! Throw in a home renovation show with a egotistical co-star to drive you crazy and you just keep reading to see what HE is going to do next to create problems! Super read, MKA!! Thanks for the great book!
Mary Kay Andrews does it again! I love how the book starts and without giving anything away, I'll leave it at that! Needless to say, it's a great hook! My Andrews fans will enjoy it and it is, as always, the perfect beach read!
I love the fresh take of an HGTV-esque show turned into a romance/whodunit. I was not expecting the plot to be so heavily based in the thriller and have the romance be secondary, but I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. The scenes were not super gory or gross, but explained the scene well. This is a great novel for fans on HGTV, Magnolia, or Nicole Curtis. Thank you for the advance copy.
The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews 🏠
First, thank you @netgalley & @stmartinspress for the eARC! The Homewreckers releases May 3! 💞
Hattie restores homes as a living and gets the opportunity to star in a new reality TV show about renovating homes in Savannah, GA. But as they begin to work on a house located on Tybee Island, they end up discovering clues of a murder case from twenty years ago.
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ ; I loved the plot of this book! It’s like mixing a murder mystery with an HGTV show, which was super fun! I loved the mystery, but really struggled with the romance because it just wasn’t developed at all, making it hard to find the love interest believable or engaging. But I did enjoy other relationships in this book! Overall, I think this was a fun read going into summer time! ☀️
Have you ever read any books by Mary Kay Andrews? This was my first one!
Every since being widowed at 25, Hattie Kavanaugh has thrown herself into her work restoring old homes with her father-in-law for his business, Kavanaugh and Sons. When producer, Mo Lopez comes to town, she gets the opportunity to restore a storied old beach house as part of a reality television series. However, having to deal with demanding network executives, and an untrustworthy antagonistic co-star, and more, Hattie may find herself in way over her head and that's before a wallet related to a decades-old disappearance turns up and mysterious events start occurring.
This book is both a mystery and a romance. The romance, however, is extremely slow-burning so if you are in it for the romance you may be disappointed. The mystery part of the story is much more satisfying. Plus, it's fun to read about the inner workings of a reality show. If you ever had any dreams of being on a reality show yourself, this book will probably cure you of that ambition. It's also nice to see a capable female character in a role that many would consider more of a male domain and what's more she is a kickass character who can take care of herself and does not need a man to come and rescue her. Hattie is an extraordinarily refreshing character to center a novel around, and although the story could have used perhaps a little more romance, overall, it is an enjoyable read.
