Make space in your beach bag for this immensely entertaining and delightfully escapist story! For many years now, my summers have indeed begun with a tale from Mary Kay Andrews, and the Homewreckers is another immersive, colorful Southern page-turner featuring strong, relatable women characters, a mystery, a fixer-upper, house decor, and a bit of romance and humor - this time ‘round set in beautiful Savannah, Georgia and nearby Tybee Island. This is territory MKA knows well, as she and Mr. MKA have three renovated rental properties on Tybee, and her love for these locales and passion for historical renovation and home decor are obvious throughout. (I even found myself Googling some of the artists she mentions.) And though in a few places the writing is not as “tight’ as is typical of MKA’s books, I truly couldn’t put down this tale which is, for my taste, MKA’s best since High Tide Club. Read it in a day! MKA has once again proven she’s a master storyteller, and her latest - her 30th published book - is fresh and fun, and should not be missed! Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s for an e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Wow MKA has done it again! This plot is a twisting and turning web that plays out to be a mystery. I love how this book is so different than some of MKA’s other stories and definitely recommend.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Another great read from MaryKay Andrews! I dislike books that are formulaic and this one doesn’t disappoint. Unique characters and situations made this a journey I enjoyed and found hard to put down. Other reviews will probably summarize the plot, but if you enjoy stories that include love/lust, friendship, perseverance with some mystery included, I think you’ll like this book!
Loved this mystery by the fabulous Mary Kay Andrews! A home restoration show opens the door to long forgotten disappearance and our heroine must figure out who dunnit!
I love all things low country and this book set in Savannah was no exception! When Hattie, a historical home flipper, is approached by Mo, an “HPTV” producer, she is hesitant to turn her passion for renovation into entertainment for others. She realizes this may be her only opportunity to make back the money on a flip gone wrong and signs the contract for a six week FILMED reno. Filled with great characters, a love triangle, AND a murder mystery, this is the perfect book to throw in your beach bag!
Mary Kay Andrews is always good for a really solid summer read, and her 30th book did not disappoint! The Homewreckers delivers her trademark blend of romance, mystery, and great characters. I really enjoyed getting to know these characters, and reading about home renovation was fun and interesting. The author could definitely continue the stories of these characters in a sequel, and I would happily read it! Perfect summer/beach read. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
This is a perfect summer, beachy read! It had a little bit of everything and you’ll be on the edge of your seat trying to figure out the the mystery.
I’ve been a huge fan of Mary Kay Andrews books for years and she knocked this one out of the park! The characters were all amazing and fit completely into the story, there was romance, murder, suspense and home renovations. I didn’t know you could fit that all into one book but MKA did it and she did it incredibly well! If I could rate this 10 stars I most definitely would
A new book by Mary Kay Andrews means that summer is just around the corner. She is one of the few authors that I pre-order her new book without knowing anything about it and she's never let me down. Her books are always a reflection of people and places in the South along with a bit of mystery and a bit of romance..tears and laughter and a plot that keeps me reading while I ignore the world around me.
Hattie restores old houses in Savannah with a company owned by her father-in-law Tug She started working with the restoration company in high school and Tug taught her the basics of rehabbing a house. She married the boss's son and when her husband was killed in a motorcycle accident when she was 25 she put all of her time and energy into her restoration work. There are a lot of problems with the house that she's currently working on -- the house that Tug warned her would be a problem - when Mo shows up. He is a producer for a reality TV station and trying to find a new angle for a reality show on flipping houses. He asks Hattie to be the star of a show about rehabbing houses in Savannah. His boss at the TV station wants to change the plan to make it more popular and adds a handsome designer, Trae, who has become popular on other reality shows. Hattie reluctantly agrees to be part of the show to help her get out of the debt she incurred on her last house. Once filming starts, she isn't sure that it was such a good idea. Trae's design ideas go against her ideas of how a house in Savannah should be decorated plus he wants to be more than friends with her. To top it all off, a body is found in the house septic tank and turns out to be a woman who has been missing for years. Suddenly someone starts working against her and a fire is started in the back of the house to try to stop the work that's going on. Is it connected to the family of the original owner or does it have something to do with the dead body? So now we have a mystery, a little romance and a look behind the scenes of a 'reality' show. Will Hattie choose Trae or Mo or spend her life alone? Along with the great characters and plot, we also get some great scenery descriptions at Tybee Island. I've been to Tybee and can't wait to go back.
Will the reality show be accepted by the network? Will the mystery of the missing woman be solved? And will Hattie get her happily ever after with Trae or Mo or be destined to stay alone? All these questions and more are solved by the end of this great book.
If you read MKA books, you don't want to miss this one! If you don't read her books, why not? She's a great author who always provides her readers with fantastic books filled with her trademark wit and warmth.
Thanks to netgalley for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.
I received an ARC of, The Homewreckers, by Mary Kay Andrews. I liked Hattie and sometimes Mo, but thats it, I did not like the other characters. This is a well written book, I just did not like the characters or the plot.
I adored this new book by Mary Kay Andrews!! It was fun and full of twists, turns, mystery and a home remodeling TV show. Great characters and a spectacular setting in Savannah, this is a perfect summer beach read! Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
An entertaining and engaging novel. A mix of romance, mystery and behind the scenes of reality television. This one kept me turning the pages, but I didn't really want it to end. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley.
I don't know how I've lived this long without reading any Mary Kay Andrews?! The Homewreckers was a great intro to her work and I'll be heading back for more.
The story focuses on Hattie, a contractor in Savannah, Georgia, as she takes on the ultimate renovation project - on reality TV. as if that isn't entertaining enough, there's also a murder to solve! And love in the air!
This book checked so many boxes for me:

I sped through this one. A great weeknight read when the world is feeling heavy.
This novel requires a bit of patience at the beginning. The initial chapters are so slow that only my reticence to not finish a book for review and my history of enjoying this author’s previous works kept me engaged. I’m very glad I did because once the storyline picked up, I found this a very entertaining read.
Hattie Kavanaugh, a thirty-three year old widow, is in dire financial straits. She overextended herself and the renovation company she works for by taking on a huge historic home that proved to be a money pit. When she is offered the opportunity to co-star in a new TV series for a home improvement network, Hattie reluctantly agrees despite the fact that she will have to go further in debt to pay all the expenses to renovate another home. The project unfolds with a myriad of unforeseen problems: a family feud over the sale of the property; an obnoxious building inspector; a premeditated dumpster fire; a meddling network executive; a narcissistic designer co-star; and a mystery surrounding the disappearance of a young teacher seventeen years ago.
This novel has a little something for just about every audience. First it reveals the behind-the-scenes drama of those prolific home improvement shows. Next it has the elements of a good murder/mystery without being gruesome (although I guessed the guilty party early in the book). And lastly, there is a light hand at romance.
I enjoyed the cast of characters, although some were a bit clichéd. Once the renovation and filming began for the TV show, the pace quickened and kept me turning pages.
Overall, I found this an enjoyable read with a few minor flaws. Congratulations to the author on her 30th novel in thirty years! I look forward to many more.
My thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the privilege of reviewing this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This review is being posted immediately to my GoodReads account and will be posted on Amazon upon publication.
Mary Kay Andrews embraces the whole home-fixer-up genre on television as she releases her latest novel, a murder mystery called The Homewreckers, in May.
Hattie Kavanaugh flips houses for a living with her father-in-law’s company in Savannah, Georgia. Obsessed with the business, Hattie has little time for anything outside of her job. A widow, Hattie first refuses the proposition of Maurice Lopez, an executive producer of home improvement programs, to star in a series about flipping houses in her city called Saving Savannah.
However, Hattie changes her mind because a bad flip investment has put her finances in jeopardy. But what she thinks she is signing up for is not what Rebecca Sanzone, the head of the HPT network, has in mind: a show called The Homewreckers, combining a home improvement show and a dating program by bringing in hot decorator Trae Bartholomew to woo Hattie. What could possibly go wrong with switching up things for Hattie who does not suspect what is going on?
During Demo Day, Hattie’s best friend and foreman, Cassidy, finds a wallet between the walls in the bathroom of the house on Tybee Island they are flipping for the program. The contents of the wallet reveal it belongs to Lanier Ragan, a woman who just disappeared 17 years ago leaving behind a husband and a young child. Coincidentally, that woman was Hattie and Cassidy’s high school English teacher. What will an investigation into a long-missing woman’s wallet do to the already tight timeline for The Homewreckers? What might this clue lead to in solving the mystery about what happened to Lanier?
Mary Kay Andrews a pseudonym for Kathy Hogan Trocheck, is definitely one of my go-to authors for summer reads. A native of St. Petersburg, Florida, she started her professional journalism career in Savannah, Georgia, where she covered the real-life murder trials that were the basis of the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, a non-fiction novel by John Berendt. A former journalist, Andrews has lived in Raleigh, North Carolina, but is currently residing in Atlanta and has her own hideaway on Tybee Island.
My review will be posted on Goodreads starting March 18, 2022.
I would like to thank St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in return for an objective review.
Mary Kay Andrews… you did it again! Slam dunk. I’m going to need a follow up book on this one though. This book is yet again a good mix of Savannah, mystery, love, and a determined main female lead. Hattie and Cass are a great duo. I loved it was a crew of women flipping houses. Very relatable story line with the tv reality show. I can see this turning into a movie.
I could love to see the Hattie and Mo story evolve for the new show in a second book surrounding Saving Savannah.
Mary Kay Andrews has produced a string of 30 bestsellers in 30 years and is still going strong. One of her preferred settings is Savannah, Georgia, and she does it proud in her latest beach read, The Homewreckers. The book's title is also the name of a new reality show that will showcase the restoration of a rundown Savannah beach house which was recently repossessed from the owner family for failure to pay overdue property taxes.
Young widow Hattie has loved her job of restoring and selling houses for almost 15 years, but her latest project has proven to be a disaster, leaving her with more unpaid loans than she can handle. So when she is approached to host the reality show, along with Trae, an experienced show business personality, she grudgingly agrees. Hattie knows she will have to meet an overly ambitious timeline and deal with her amorous co-host, but she never expected to find the wallet of her favorite high school teacher concealed in one of the house's cabinets, not to mention another grisly surprise on the property. The teacher had disappeared one night years ago and never been found, leaving family--including a 4-year-old daughter--and friends stymied and saddened.
There is much to enjoy in the novel, including a feisty protagonist and her attempts to embrace an unfamiliar role and unrealistic expectations while remaining true to who she is. The details of how the restoration was carried out are fascinating, and the mystery is well developed. I would have appreciated a bit more realism regarding a potential romance between Hattie and the show's producer, but overall I can heartily recommend the book as escapist reading during troubled times.
My thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for affording me the opportunity to read and provide an honest review of this book.
I found your first must read 2022 beach read! Mary Kay Andrews never disappoints and is my favorite book by her yet with both the writing and plot. This is the perfect book to read by the pool, lake, or ocean. There’s mystery, romance, and wit.
Mary Kay Andrews writes consistently engaging fiction, and the latest is no exception.
This book takes place on beachy Tybee island with the fun of a renovation reality show and a murder mystery thrown in. The main heroine Hattie is plucky and capable, but reeling from a flip that was over her head. In sweeps a hot reality producer, a hot designer, and a lot of changes to Hattie's quiet life as a young widow.
The book is perfect for summer with some romance, some mystery and a fun tie in to renovation and the beach. Another winner from Andrews.
Mary Kay Andrews does it again with The Homewreckers. A great beach read. This book has everything from a mystery, reality tv show, forgiveness and romance. Hattie Kavanaugh is approached by Mo Lopez to restore/flip a house on Tybee Island for a pilot tv show. That’s when the craziness begins from finding a wallet a teacher who disappeared to a LA interior designer. A fun read. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the E-ARC. This is my own opinion.
