I loved this book. It had a bit of everything in it. I listened to the audio version and the narrator was fantastic. I enjoyed the slow burn romance and the setting just made it even better. This is was not my first book by this author and it definitely will not be my last.
I thought this book was so fun! It reminded me of Wendy Wax’s Beach Road series. MKA always brings a little mystery and a strong heroine, which I like. The book is a long one but I’m glad I read it!
5 stars! I absolutely adore MKA. The Homewreckers is a Southern Chick-lit, packed with action. I recommend this great summer read.
Thank you to Mary Kay Andrews, St. Martin's Press, and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Hattie Cavanaugh, home restorer extraordinaire, gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to restore a delapidated beach house on a reality show, HGTV-style. The show is called Homewreckers and features Hattie and a famous TV persona who has done other programs before. Part mystery, part home renovation story, part love triangle - this book seemingly has it all.
Except, it doesn't. The characters are flat and Hattie Cavanaugh, who is supposed to be an America's Sweetheart-type, is completely unsufferable. In a "oh am I pretty and cute? tee hee" kind of way. She acts like she is all tough as a widow working in a male dominated field, yet all she does is throw herself at every guy in the book. The book also had some racist aspects.
The book dragged on at over 400 pages when it should have been 250. Everything that happens at the end is completely implausable. For example - one of the main reveals of the book involves people texting each other long paragraphs, in the early 1990s. This simply did not occur. And the book can't end the way it does without those "texts". From the early 1990s. A little proof reading and common sense would go a long way.
Not a fan, will not read any more by this author. I wanted to try her out because she is well-liked and well- known but this book was not enjoyable.
Special thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Finally catching up with my NetGalley backlog and I’m glad I didn’t miss out of this one!
Homewreckers is a cute story about love lost, home renovations, realty tv, old town gossip, and a missing school teacher. Best part? It takes place in Savannah! This was more mystery than I expected but it was a nice surprise.
Very enjoyable and easy to read! Four stars!
Thank you to the author, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Mary Kay Andrews is an amazing author and I will update this review once finished - but I'm enjoying it so far.
This is a story with a very current undertone. Hattie, her father-in-law, and best friend buy, renovate and flip houses. Hattie and her best friend go way back and are BFF. Hattie’s husband was killed in a motorcycle accident a few years back, and her best friend and father-in-law helped her get through it and keep going. When the story begins, they are in the middle of reno that will never be easy and keeps getting bogged down until Hattie finally realizes she has to just get rid of it, finished or not. However, she has invested a ton of money into it and stands to lose a bundle. To help shore up her and the company’s finances, she agrees to become involved in the renovation of an old Savannah house with a Hollywood producer who hopes to turn the flip into a HGTV type series. Thus begins Hattie’s newest adventure. As the reno proceeds, she and her crew encounter lots of problems, from an over-eager city code enforcement inspector who tries to suck up most of her project money, to the discovery of a wallet that belonged to a beloved school teacher who mysteriously disappeared never to be heard from again to an angry Savannah family who had owned the house who now are convinced she and the production team have ripped them off of what was rightfully theirs. However, she sticks with it through all this. In addition, she has to contend with a narcissistic design person sent to the set by the station rep as well as the man who developed and proposed the idea and who is hoping the show takes off—and that Hattie will realize he is worth her time to get to know.
I found this a very interesting book. There was just enough of a plot between the for TV reno and the dead schoolteacher to keep me interested. I also enjoyed the interplay between Hattie and the design man and the man with the idea behind the show. I realized that these HGTV shows take time and have a lot going on in the background and was amazed how the author managed to get it all across while still inserting the dead teacher story into the plot. I did get a bit tired of the narcissistic design person but realized that this was just part of the plot and was being carried out quite realistically and was well done. This is a great book to curl up with on a lazy afternoon, just like most of her other books. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.
I'm a big fan of Andrew's books and this one was a great read. Hattie is rehabbing an old house but when that old house becomes part of a true-crime story, things get very interesting!
I thoroughly enjoyed this story by MKA. Dare I say I think this was my first novel by her, and I was not disappointed. A fun, behind the scenes look of a reality TV home flip with a mystery sprinkled on top, had my attention captured. To be honest, the magic of a diy show has been taken away a little by this fictional story, but oh so fun and excited for another MKA novel.
The Homewreckers
By Mary Kay Andrews
I am a huge fan of Mary Kay Andrews ever since reading The Newcomer, I was sold. I am currently working my way back to all Mary Kay Andrews’ back list.
I cannot get enough of HGTV and delight on the before and after of those flipping shows. The reveal is just so surprising and I just jaw drop. So it was not a surprise, that I loved The Homewreckers and getting into the lives of Hattie and the Kavanaugh family and their restoration work with the fixer uppers.
My heart goes out to Hattie – she is such a strong woman who suffered a huge loss early in her life. But Hattie is not one to stay down, get up is what she does, and try and try until you succeed is her motto. I love all the opportunities that Hattie is offered and a second chance at love is within reach for her.
In true Mary Kay Andrews style and southern charm, my heart was wrecked and made whole again in this amazing romance with a dash of mystery, I know you will enjoy.
You can't have summer without a new MKA novel. With classic humor, suspense, and of course, romance, Homewreckers was a great way to kick off the season. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as a reader and a lover of fixing old houses.
Love, love, love this book! A reality show, a mystery and a romance all in one story. LA reality show comes to Georgia with a whole house remodel on Tybee Island. I liked the characters and how they played off each other. The decorator is eye catching but a womanizer. Hattie is the central character and I like her moral compass. Cass is foreman and doesn't have a big enough part in the story. Overall a totally great book that had me sit and read the book front to back in one seating. LOVED IT!
Another classsic by Mary Kay Andrews! I loved this fun, beachy tale full of her trademark wit and feel-good humor. Perfect for the beach or a cozy night in .
I loved everything about this book!! It highlights everything that goes on between people with mixed emotions and people working too closely together on jobs!!
I loved this book! It was a great combination of humor, a little mystery, and love. This so reminded me of something that would be on HGTV. I am reading more Mary Kay Andrews now and I really like each one more and more. We will hand sell this at the store, although it sells itself!
This was such a good book and a great way to end the summer. The characters were very relatable and the story was a fast read. Would recommend to anyone!
Fabulous summer beach read about a very young widow that keeps her and her husbands business going/ Then buys a money pit of a house to fix up and flip and all that this entails. Great characters, locales and back stories.
Thank you to Netgalley, St. Martins Press and the Author Mary Kay Andrews for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another MKA hit!!
If you enjoy those home make over shows, this is the perfect book for you! I literally couldn't put it down from the first turn of pages.
Hattie started working for a home renovation company when she was fresh out of high school at 18. She married the son of the owner, and then just a few short years later he passed away tragically.
She continues their life work, even though struggling until one day an opportunity falls into her lap - a beach renovation on an up and coming television make over show.
It's all flip or flop throughout the whole book.
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book, all opinions are my own.
I just reviewed The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews. #NetGalley
Mary Kay Andrews does not disappoint. the Homewreckers is a fun, fast paced read. Her characters are always likable, real and a little quirky. I’m a big fan of HGTV so I really enjoyed the premise of this novel. I can’t wait to see what MKA has in store for us next!
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
Mary Kay Andrews comes through with another great summer read! Hattie Kavanaugh is a great lead character; I found myself invested in her story and really rooting for her. The story is part murder mystery, part romance, and part DIY dream. The descriptions of Hattie's house and the care she took in restoring it brought such a clear picture to my mind. Fans of house flipping reality shows will get a kick out of this one. I truly enjoyed this book!
