The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews was a welcome read for a recent airplane ride. I love MKA books and this one did not disappoint, I really enjoyed the (not scary) mystery alongside a sweet story. Home renovation is a common storyline in MKA books and this one had the fun storyline of a reality tv show involving restoring a beach house in Savannah, Georgia. The descriptions of the location made me want to visit, just not in the summer. I highly recommend this book to be added to your summer TBR stack!
Would it even be summer without a new @marykayandrews book? I absolutely adore her novels, especially her female main characters, and this is no exception.
The Homewreckers is part cozy mystery, part romance, and part reality TV. Hattie is a local Savannah woman who is paired with a well known Hollywood designer to renovate a beach house, and there’s very little about the project that goes smoothly. It makes for a perfect beach read and I know this will get a lot of #bookstagram love this summer!
Mary Kay Andrews is always on my vacation reading list. When I want a novel I can relax with that a will make me feel good, something I can cozy up with in a hammock or on a beach. I can take my time and savor the stories and southern characters. Not since Bebe and Weezie (Savannah Breeze and Savannah Blues) have I read about a stronger, purer friendship through all kinds of hardship, Hattie and Cass have weathered many storms in life but can they stand against reality TV and LA co-star and network executives?
Hattie works fro her father in law rehabbing houses, her best friend Cass is the foreman of her crew. Unfortunately Hattie is in over her head on a house that needs too much work and will eat any profit. Tug, her father in law, has her sell the house before they are too far into the red and Hattie is desperate to recoup her loss. An opportunity for a TV show falls in her lap thanks to an overheard conversation over breakfast. It looks like she is on a lucky streak when Cass’s mom overhears a fellow parishioner asking for prayers about a house that the family may lose because of unpaid back taxed. Unfortunately this is the last of Hattie’s good luck. A series of mishaps and a seventeen year old mystery threaten to derail the project.
A strong friendship, love, loss, danger, and a mystery to solve mean this novel has it all!
I love me some MKA! This was a fast paced and fun story! Lots of characters for you to enjoy and the ride along with the plot was fun!
So I really liked this book and it was definitely more mystery than the blurb would indicate. I was expecting a cute rom com about Hattie a widow who buy houses and flips them but when she in over her head with her last house and has to sell it at a loss her confidence is shaken. Mo who is a Hollywood producer sees her at her disaster project and has an idea for a renovation show starring her and Trae a designer from California so she takes the deal since she needs the money to recoup the loss she took on her last project. There is of course the maybe romance with Trae or with Mo which is up in the air on who she will be with. The book starts with a woman sneaking out to meet her illicit lover, is attacked and black outs and then we get to Hattie at her doomed project. It took me a minute of going back and checking the summary to make sure I wasn’t reading the wrong book. The mystery part is great and weaves well with the story since it is attached to the piece of property Hattie buys to renovate. I just would have liked a heads up that this was going to be part of the story since nothing in the summary indicated there was going to be any kind of mystery in this book. I really enjoyed the book and I love her characters and can’t wait to read her next book.
Thanks St. Martins and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book in e-book form. All opinions in this review are my own.
I really enjoyed this book ! Throughout the book the plots intertwined and kept me on the egde of my seat
I’m
This was a nice change from the past few MKA books. I like that she returned to her design-themed stories. I fell in love with MKA through those stories, so this was a fun intro-to-summer read.
I received an advance copy. All thoughts are my own.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC of The Homewreckers.
Hattie is a home renovation expert who works in Savanah with her Father in Law. Widowed at a young age, she’s not only looking for the perfect house to flip but for her next chapter and the motivation to move on from her first great love. She is offered the chance to star in her own renovation show. The house they choose is riddled with problems, including being the missing link to a long-forgotten cold case.
I enjoyed the premise and the elements of mystery in this story. I felt that the two stories could have intersected a bit more and I would have liked to examine Hattie’s grief in a more profound way. That seemed to take up a lot of background but wasn’t given the attention I felt it deserved in her present life and experiences.
The multiple POV was cool and I liked how that contributed to the flow of the story. I felt at times that the perspective added by the multiple POV wasn’t fresh or didn’t add new insight to the story, however.
I saw the resolution coming but hoped there would be more of a surprise, somehow connecting all of this to Hank’s death. I found the conclusion a bit anti-climactic. I also felt that the romances were dialed in and without more exploration of their meaning and Hattie’s sudden readiness, it could have been skipped all together.
This is a fun summer-time read. I liked it and would recommend it for someone who likes suspense but not to be scared.
Mary Kay Andrews never let us down. A little bit of love connections and mystery as well with some humor thrown in.
It isn’t summer without a Mary Kay book and this is a good one! Take a little bit love story, little bit of a mystery then throw in some HGTV and you’ve got Homewreckers. Hattie buys a dilapidated beach house and agreed to restore it on a reality TV show. The catch being that she doesn’t know her producer, Mo Lopez, has changed the concept from a house-flipping show to a house-flip–meets–dating-show, where the goal is for Hattie to fall for the handsome designer, Trae Bartholomew. In addition to problems in her love life, a cold case becomes hot again when clues to a missing teacher’s whereabouts start popping up while renovating the house! A fun, beach read is what MK Andrews is known for and she delivered again!
I love Mary Kay Andrews and every book she writes, but The Homewreckers is my new favorite! I loved the plot, the characters who felt so real, and the ending that was absolutely perfect! I will be recommending this book to everyone!
I did not get to read this book unfortunately but appreciated the opportunity that was provided. I am sure that this would be enjoyed by many provided they had the time
Hattie Kavanaugh began working for Kavanaugh and Son Restoration cleaning up worksites right out of high school. A couple of years later, she married the son in Kavanaugh and son. 5 years later, he was killed in a motorcycle accident. She takes the dream that they had together and the life insurance money and begins flipping houses. Unfortunately, not all of the houses that she flips are money makers and her most current acquisition really shook her confidence as well as her bottom line.
Luckily, Hattie is offered an amazing opportunity flipping a house for the reality show, The Homewreckers. She stars alongside an interior designer from California, Trae Bartholomew, who has done work on reality shows before and who the network is hoping will spark a romantic relationship with Hattie.
Not only do these two face tons of obstacles in flipping the house while remaining under budget and ahead of schedule, but they also discover evidence in an unsolved disappearance of one of the local school teachers in 2005.
This was a cute summer beach read…we did not have a lot of character development or a super intense investigation into the disappearance but it was fun all the same.
I would call this Good Bones with murder on the side and a dash of romance. An all around cute summer read.
I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I am a big fan of Mary Kay Andrew’s books, and was so excited when I saw she had a new one out. I am happy to say I loved this one as much as the rest of hers! I flew through this book, I did not want to put it down, once I started.
This book has a little bit of everything in it. It’s part Murder mystery, drama, romance, humor, and so much more. I really loved the home renovation theme in this book. I found it to be a really fun storyline. It also made me want to buy an old house and renovate it. I enjoyed the all characters in this book, even the side characters. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I would highly recommend checking it out!

Such a cute summer read with substance and suspense! If you love HGTV, you might just recognize some of the author’s inspirations in this home improvement inspired novel. Highly recommend!
Mary Kay Andrews has done it again!! This book is an absolute must read!!
Hattie Kavanaugh works for her father in law's construction company, rehabbing and remodeling homes. When she convinces the company to buy a huge old home in Savannah, it's much worse than she thought, the definition of "money pit". To help make this right, she finds a 100 year old house on Tybee Island to rehab. Enter Mo, a Hollywwood producer who talks her into hosting a reality TV show about the rehab. But this house is MORE of a money pit than the first one, there's the mystery of the wallet in the wall, belonging to a young mother who disappeared 17 years ago.
Great suspense, great characters, great story!!
When Mary Kay Andrews writes a new book I will read it. She usually has her new books debut just in time for beach reading season. Ms. Andrews always writes the most relatable and fun books with their own unique twists. This is her thirtieth book in thirty years. She definitely has the magic!
In this novel I felt like I was on the set of a HGTV house flipping show. The story not only deals with renovations but deals in a mystery as well. Ms. Andrews develops characters who are believable, lovable or love to hate. One of Ms. Andrews strong suits is her character development. They rise up off the page and you find yourself cheering them on, feeling sad when they do and drawn in by them.
As the story progresses, the readers are beginning to solve the mystery alongside the characters. While there is romance in this story it is not the be it and end all of this story. If you like home improvement and/or house flipping reality shows with a little mystery thrown in this is a great read.
If you are looking for a wonderful beach read, pick this book up! As usual Mary Kay Andrews does not disappoint. I am, as always, looking forward to seeing what she has in store for us next.
I would like to thank Mary Kay Andrews, St, Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews. There is a little bit of everything to keep your attention ... murder mystery, great characters, drama, romantic interests, family relationships. The setting of Savannah is one of my favorites. And I loved how the author introduced a lot of characters but they were developed well enough that you could keep up with them. In addition, their personalities were so varied that you discovered the good, the bad, and the ugly they represented. This was a perfect summer read and I know I will be sharing it with my book loving peeps. Put this one on your to-be-read list.

Young widow Hattie Kavanaugh is down on her luck after flopping on a house when the opportunity of a lifetime comes her way — her own show on HPTV flipping a historical beach house. But as filming starts, a lot more than termites and rotting wood is uncovered. A 17 year old missing person investigation is reopened and it quickly becomes apparent that the answers are a lot closer to home than anyone realized.
Okay…this was a long book, and I absolutely devoured it! I’m surprised at how fast I finished it, but I didn’t want to put it down. I absolutely loved the quick chapters!! I found myself reaching for it every chance I got and staying up late to read just another chapter. This was a fast-paced murder mystery with a dash of romance! The writing was so good; I could easily picture all the going-ons of Tybee Island. The characters were well-developed and there was so much witty dialogue. I found myself laughing throughout the entire book. There is a bit of romance in the form of a love triangle, but I thought it was easy to see how things were going to workout for our girl Hattie. And I was rooting for her so much after all that she had been through personally and professionally. Cass was the perfect best friend and such a multi-dimensional side character. The true star of this book though is the uncovered missing person/murder mystery. It had so many layers and gave such good drama. I felt like I was reading a tv show that could be on Investigation Discovery. All in all this was such a fun, suspenseful read. I can’t recommend it enough.
CW: Closed door and moderate language throughout.

Talk about a book written just for me. A southern romance and HGTV had a baby. Couldn’t read it quickly enough.
