This was another good chapter in the Kate Burkholder series by Linda Castillo. It was quick and suspenseful read. Whether you are already a fan or looking for a new mystery/suspense series, I definitely recommend The Hidden One and the Kate Burkholder series. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC.

T.I.M.E. BOOK REVIEW: One of the wonderful bonuses of discovering an amazing series is the deep dive and total immersion you experience into the world of the story.
In writing the series, the author is so well-versed on the details of the characters and location this deep dive has the scuba swim wonder of diving into waters that turn the reading “color saturation dial” from 1 to 10. It is a complete delight and a perfect “escape” reading experience.
More best book series authors who have mastered the “scuba reading swim” are William Kent Krueger, Louise Penny and — new to the scene — Joanna Schauffhaussen… And I now add Linda Castillo to that list too!
This is only my 2nd Castillo book to read and both books have swept me away from page 1.
Also... A great thriller earns a spot on my T.I.M.E. Favorite Books To Read list when the story is both thrilling and insightful. The Hidden One accomplishes both with a beautiful sub-theme of living with the memories of a first love. Simply stunning undercurrent to this already thrilling story.
Perfect for readers looking for a best thriller book pick that feels right at home on the literary fiction book shelf as well.
BONUS: Although the Kate Burkholder Series is a cumulative series (with 14 books to date!), you can jump in at any point and be “in the flow” of the story easefully. The author has a real talent for both introducing her characters to new readers while still giving previous readers the feeling that you are reuniting with a good friend…✨😎✨

T.I.M.E. TIP: Although it is a cumulative series, you can read this book series as standalone books… As for me, I started with Book 13 but, after finding Books 13 and 14 landing on my T.I.M.E. Favorite Books list, I intend to circle back from Book 1 in order... I can hardly wait!... ✨😎✨

♡ Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
Book 14 in the Kate Burkholder Series, but can be read as a stand-alone. This time Kate is taken from her small community in Ohio to Pennsylvania to help an old friend accused of murder in a cold case. Kate has no problem sticking her nose in, even though she is out of her jurisdiction. I enjoy the Dutch phrases, followed with the English meaning. The Amish are simple folk, but there are a lot of layers we aren’t aware of. I missed her usual cast of characters, but look forward to see what the next books holds for Kate. We learn more of Kate’s past in this book.
Thanks to Ms. Castillo, St. Martin’s Press/Minotaur Books and NetGalley for this ARC opinion is mine alone.
Linda Castillo NEVER disappoints with her Kate Burkholder series and FINALLY she might be getting married - no spoiler...because we'll have to wait to find out!!! I know the reader can surmise the atrocities Ananious Stoltzfus engaged in while he was in Germany during the war...but I feel more could've been revealed. But all in all FANTASTIC book as always!
Happy publishing day to this book! Thanks to NetGalley for a copy!! I grew up in an area with a high number of Amish people (hi PA), so I have always been interested in books with Amish characters. I have a few on my kindle with my favorite being Wanda Brunstetter. Linda Castillo is a new author for me.
I didn’t realize this was number 14 in a bigger series where each book seems to be its own mystery. In this book, an Amish Bishop disappeared over a decade ago but then in todays time skeletal remains are found that suggest foul play. Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is helping to investigate the crime when she realizes her first love is the accused. Someone doesn’t want Kate or anyone else asking questions about what really happened.
This is book #14 in the Kate Burkholder series, but can be read as a stand-alone. It’s a fast paced, suspenseful thriller. The plot is so well developed and entertaining. It’s full of twists and turns that kept me flipping pages! Great read. *this was a complimentary copy via NetGalley and this is my honest review*
Kate Burkholder is the Chief Police Of Police in a town called Painter's Mill, Ohio. It is an Amish community. Kate use to be Amish but ended up no longer being Amish when she was a teenager then moved to Columbus, Ohio, my home town. Then she ended moving back to Painter's Mill to be a police there.
Kate found out from Nelson Yoder that human bones were discovered by one of his brethen's when he was cutting hay. The police came and found out that those bones were identified as belonging to Ananais Stoltz. Ananais was a Bishop for many years. Ananais disappeared eighteen years ago. He vanished without a trace. His children and grandchildren were upset with worry and heartache because no-one knew what happened to him. The police found out that he was shot twice. There was a rifle found with the bones. It was a muzzleloader which was rusted. It belonged to an Amish man, named Jonas. Kate knew Jonas. He was a childhood friend, as they grew older they played baseball, hockey and went swimming in the creek. They also hung out together as teenagers. Kate is asked by some bishops for some help in investigating the case.
This is the 14th book in the Kate Burkholder series. I just love this series. This book can be read as a standalone. I have read every book in this series. This book has a lot of nail biting suspense. I always love how the author has all of her characters well developed. Kate has a lot of life threatening predicaments that she gets herself into.
I can't wait for the next book in the series.
This was a buddy read with Marilyn and we both agreed that Kate is under so many life threatening predicaments and that she must be super human, because she never ends up in the hospital.
I want to thank Netgalley and Minotaur Books for the copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
I received The Hidden One as an ARC through Netgalley. When I realized that it was part of a series, I got a little worried as I haven't read any of the other ones. However, as soon as I started reading it didn't seem to matter. While I've missed out the background on how exactly Kate Burkholder left her Amish family and got to be a police chief, the author did an excellent job supplying enough background information that you didn't feel lost.
The dieners (pastors) from an Amish community in Pennsylvania, come to Ohio to ask Kate Burkholder for their help. One of their congregants have been arrested for and 18 year old unsolved murder. They know that Kate used to be Amish, but the real reason they reach out to her is because the man that has been arrested used to be part of Kate's Amish community. Not only does Kate know him, he is an old beau. Can Kate use her connection to the Amish to get information to help the police? Will the residents be helpful or just try to run her out of town?
I found this to be an extremely enjoyable and quick read. Interested to read more in this series!
Kate's latest case takes her from Painters Mill to Pennsylvania to investigate the death of a local Bishop. There she must deal with the fact that the man accused of the murder is a man she was once in love with. She is also attacked and threatened one night. But she won't back down. As usual Linda Castillo masterfully creates a fast paced intriguing mystery with amazing, well developed characters. She remains an auto buy for me!
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another great read
I am a big fan of Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder novels and have read them all. This latest, # 14, lives up to my very high expectations! The Hidden One has a new location, new characters and a very gripping plot. I love how the author keeps revealing new parts of Kate's backstory over the different books, like layers of an onion. I highly recommend this book!
Thank you to the publisher who lent me a time-constrained e-arc via Netgalley with no obligations. This review is optional and my own opinion.
When I was a child growing up in Cleveland, my father, who admired the Amish, used to take me into their communities to buy cheese, produce, and baked goods. I've been interested in the Amish ever since, so I was glad when this book was offered on NetGalley. I have always meant to read a Kate Burkholder book, and now I have.
I found that "The Hidden One' worked well as a standalone, although I am sure that I missed out on some character development. I never give spoilers, but I will say that the plot is very interesting and pulls the reader in.
This is a fast-paced, engrossing book, which along with the mystery gives a view of Amish culture. I like Kate a lot, and hope to get to know her better when I read the preceding books. Which I definitely will.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
I am a huge fan of Linda Castillo and was eagerly waiting for The Hidden One which is her 14th novel in her Kate Burkholder series. Even though Kate is called away to help solve a crime we still get to see Tomasetti and the gang at the police department. I love everything about this series and hope there are many more to come!
The narrator is so good and I love listening to these books (and reading along at times) because I'm bound to get the Amish words wrong in my head. By listening I just get to enjoy and learn a little bit too.
If you haven't started this series yet, please go to the beginning because each book builds on the next. This truly is one of my favorite series of all time!
Thank you Netgalley for giving me the audio and ebook versions. All opinions are my own and in my humble opinion this is a 5 star read!
Published 5 July 2022
Really enjoyed this addition to one of my most loved series! With dual timelines and a little romance, mystery and suspense what more could you ask for? And I didn't figure out the mystery either which is a plus. Great read and I highly recommend the entire Kate Burkholder series.
The Hidden One by Linda Castillo is book fourteen in the Kate Burkholder mystery series. An Amish bishop went missing over a decade ago, and his remains have just been uncovered. Jonas Bowman is arrested for the murder, and Kate is asked to help investigate the murder in order to prove Jonas's innocence. She has a special personal connection to Jonas, as he was her first love. As Kate investigates, she uncovers more mysteries, and she upsets some people. This was yet another great addition to the Kate Burkholder series by Castillo, and I highly recommend it. Thanks to NetGalley for the free digital review copy. All opinions are my own.
5 stars for this solid, quick read! 📚🤩
Book #14 in the Kate Burkholder series follows ex-Amish police chief Kate Burkholder as she’s requested by the elders in a Pennsylvania Amish community to investigate the murder of their bishop after his bones are discovered eighteen years after he disappeared. Kate’s teen sweetheart Jonas Bowman, previously from Painters Mill.. has been arrested for the bishops murder and it’s up to Kate to prove his innocence!
Can she do it.. you bet! 👮🏻🔎
This is one of my favorite series, and Linda Castillo’s latest had me sobbing by the end. 😭 Kate is flying solo in this one.. with danger, mayhem and murder, dark secrets, lies, and I would of never guessed.. Germany, yes you heard that right.. this is the one book in the series you don’t want to miss.
It’s fantastic, her best yet!! 🥰
Thanks to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for providing a digital review copy. All opinions are my own. Pub. 7/5/22
I did not know anything about Linda Castillo or the Kate Burkholder series going into this. But when I was offered to read this on NetGalley it sounded interesting so I decided to go for it!
This is the 14th (!!) book in an ongoing series about a former Amish woman, turned small town police chief. I assume many of the crimes she investigates in these books take place within the Amish community. And this one is no different.
It starts with the discovery of the remains of an Amish bishop, and the suspect is someone from Burkholder’s past. Some belong he’s innocent, and ask her to come investigate.
I was entertained by this mystery, and it certainly kept me turning the pages. I also live in Central PA, close to several small Amish communities. These buggy warning signs are not rare. So it was interesting from that perspective as well.
The book was a bit predictable. While there were small details I didn’t see coming, I did guess most of the major twist right away.
Still, I was entertained! While I’m not rushing out to grab another of these books immediately, I could definitely see myself reading more in the future.
Also, if I haven’t been clear, it did stand alone just fine even though I haven’t read the others. If you are a fan of this series, I’m guessing this one delivers much the same, and you’ll be happy with the newest addition.
Kate Burkholder was Amish until she was eighteen years old. Now she is the Chief of Police in her hometown of Painters Mill, Ohio. She lives with her boyfriend John Tomasetti who is an agent with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. I really like Kate's relationship with Tomasetti and how honest and supportive they are with each other. Kate goes out of town for a murder investigation in this book, so Tomasetti only appears in a couple of chapters. However, he is still an important part of the story. The book is part of a series, but is definitely accessible to new readers.
Elders from an Amish community in Belleville, Pennsylvania asked for Kate's help proving the innocence of a man from their community. Human remains were discovered in a field and have been identified as Ananias Stolzfus, an Amish bishop who had disappeared nearly twenty years ago. Jonas Bowman, Kate's childhood friend, has been arrested for his murder. Kate's investigation to prove Jonas's innocence starts out interesting but after a while goes nowhere, making parts of the middle of the book drag. Once she starts making ground again, the book picks up. Things get exciting as she closes in on a startling revelation about the victim that changes everything. The book has an unexpected but satisfying and touching ending that fans of the series will love.
I received this ebook from NetGalley through the courtesy of Minotaur Books. An advance copy was provided to me at no cost, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.
This is a wonderful plot. Kate is a small town sheriff who gets asked to consult on a case of an old friend accused of murder. The story takes some twists and turns as Kate investigates and finds that everything is not as it appears. As she gets closer to the truth her safety is in jeopardy. She becomes more determined to get to the bottom of the issue and solve the case for her friend.
The Hidden One by Linda Castillo Book 14 in The Kate Burkholder Series. I must confess, this is my very first book in this fascinating series and I would like to more. If you like stories with an Amish background then this one is for you! It has suspense, murder, mystery, secrets and a lot of information about the Amish community!! I enjoyed her writing style and the characters are very likable. It is fast paced and exciting also!! I definitely recommend this one and will try and read other books in this captivating series.
Thank you NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press/Minotaur Books and Linda Castillo for allowing me to read and review the advanced copy of this enthralling book. This is my honest review.
