Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake by Mazey Eddings, is #2 in her Brush With Love series but is perfectly fine to read as a stand-a-lone. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Lizzie and felt like we would be fast friends. Her character is flawed which makes her seem quite genuine. I felt sad when she struggled with sorting out her thoughts and was cheering for her as she navigated life with ADHD. I love that Lizzie is not afraid to go after what she wants and is open to the idea of having a one-night stands. In fact, she relishes it. On one of these "jaunts" she meets Rake and, lets just say, they made a baby without even trying.
I am a fan of the accidental pregnancy trope so this book was right up my alley. The only downside is that Rake didn't seem like a believable character. One minute he was quiet and reserved then next he's ooozing charm and sex appeal. I was also frustrated when he took his time to stand up to Dominick. Still, I think Rake and Lizzie have a connection (in spite of the great sex)!
Overall, I thought the author did a great job giving readers an uninhibited view of what it must feels like to live with ADHD and how a strong support system can make a positive difference. If you enjoy romcoms with real world issues, you should read this book. I have it 3.5 stars rounded up.
Thanks you NetGalley and St. Martins Press for a complimentary copy. All reviews are my own.
“Lizzie Blake’s Big Mistake” is hands down my favorite rom-com with depth of 2022. Mazey Eddings kills it with this one and I’m now a fan for life. When I cracked open my copy of “Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake” I felt completely seen. The dedication is pure perfection to a girl like me: someone who doesn’t have an inside voice, feels all the emotions, overly opinionated, and forever a bit too sassy. If you haven’t read Lizzie, you must. It’s a full 5 star book
This book was everything I needed at the moment. I have to admit I was not expecting to like it as much as I did. It was such a light and easy read and I absolutely loved seeing evie's relationship with roan develop as well as her friendship with greer. Highly recommend this one.
A truly chaotic Philadelphia love story. I loved every second of the wild rollercoaster that was Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake. Full of friendship, neurodiversity, Philly, love and erotic pastries - this book is a true gem while being heartwarming and hilarious. 10/10 recommend!!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review.
Lizzie’s life isn’t going the way she planned as once again she finds herself unemployed. Living wit her ADHD can be challenging at time both when it comes to work and relationships. She believed that Rake would be like the men who had come before where they would enjoy a steamy evening together however fate had other ideas.
Rake is in town for business however a little pleasure with Lizzie is exactly what he needs. They spend two unforgettable nights together before they go their separate ways until he realizes that he is about to be a father. Due to his past this is a dream come true so he doesn’t hesitate before deciding to move to the US so that he can be near Lizzie and show her that her pregnancy is a gift to be treasured.
I really enjoyed Lizzie and Rake together as they start out as lovers and then become friends. Rake is exactly who Lizzie needs in her life as he appreciates her for who she is and knows that what makes her different is also what makes her special.
Thank you so much NetGalley and St. Martins Press. There is so much to like about this book. Mazey has such a great writing style full of charm and wit. Her characters are super likeable. I had a bit of a problem with villianizing an ex for having an abortion and that whole narrative. It left a bad taste in my mouth. I’m not usually a big fan of accidental pregnancy romance but this was still enjoyable so if you enjoy that trope you will love this. Unfortunately I just don’t think it’s my thing.
Wow, Mazey Eddings! I am normally not a big fan of the accidental pregnancy trope but after reading her first book, I knew I needed to read more of her stories. This book did not disappoint but has such a fresh and unique take on my least favorite trope. The relationship between Lizzie and Rake is swoon-worthy and also pretty spicy! This was a quick and fun read!
This book is irresponsible. I will start off by saying I enjoyed A Brush With Love. I enjoy Mazey, her writing, her social media presence. What I do not enjoy is vilification of an off-page character who had an abortion. I do not enjoy accidental pregnancies without any reflection from the main character about options besides continuing with the pregnancy. Now I will 100% say that people who get pregnant should be able to make their own choices, whether it is adoption, abortion, or continuing. What I find irresponsible about this book is that Lizzie barely reflects on what makes sense in her situation. Her reflection is completely boiled down into 1 paragraph. And that isn't realistic, nor is it a narrative we should be pushing in 2022 when many people have lost the right to decide their own reproductive futures.
I will add additional evidence but I honestly DNF, skimmed, and then couldn't continue. Besides the abortion storyline (which I am sure folks have seen ad nauseum). You cannot convince me that Rake and Lizzie below together. Their relationship is purely physical, and then Rake moving to the US because he finally got the baby he wanted after he was so upset his ex had an abortion. That doesn't mean he likes Lizzie: he legit doesn't even know her! And their "getting to know you" throughout the book is essentially built off of this. It's like the abortion back story is given so that there's a reason for Rake to move to the US and ultimately for him and Lizzie to fall in love. And that is irresponsible.
I would've enjoyed this book much more if there was 1) no abortion back story, and 2) if Lizzie had a long on-page reflection/had the discussion with her friends prior to making her decision. *the scene where she brings Rake to dinner is unbelievable and hard to read*.
Overall, I cannot recommend this. I would usually say "this might be great for someone else" but in my opinion, the abortion backstory needs to be taken out.
This book had some good aspects to it but also didn't hit right in some places.
I love the unexpected pregnancy trope in a book and will definitely read each and everyone of them I come across which is what initially drew me into this book.
However when I usually read an unexpected pregnancy book the characters develop a strong relationship while they are getting to know each other and I didn't get a sense that these two had much of a connection between them.
Overall this book was good!
Lizzie Blake is equal parts fun and equal parts frustrating. For most of the book I was imagining Lorelai Gilmore with her wittiness and charm but also how Lorelai got in her own way with her stubbornness and her resentment towards her parents. Lizzie reminded me of Lorelai. She was a lot of energy and Rake calmed her down but she kept getting in her own way. I did appreciate that this was connected back to her neurodiversity, which was a teaching moment. Overall it’s a fun book and Rake is just a regular good guy - a nice change of pace from most leading men in these rom-com books.
3.5 stars. There was a lot of good stuff here - a fun, enjoyable read. I enjoyed reading the perspective of a heroine who has ADHD and seeing how that affects her life.
Very fun novel. Great job of including info on nuerodiversity by, show not tell, as we teach in middle school. Was definitely cheering for Rake and Lizzie to make it. Sequel, please???
I had to DNF for the moment. I’m not sure if it’s my mind set, or what’s going on, but I just wasn’t feeling this one at all. There were many things that just weren’t working for me.
Maybe I’ll give it another shot another time.
Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake was a fun, super quick read for me. I almost read it in one sitting, which I never do! Even thought I'm not a series/companion novel reader, I loved A Brush with Love & had to read the next book Mazey Eddings put out. I'm so happy I did, what a wonderful afternoon I had. I laughed out loud multiple times. I love that Rake was enamored with Lizzie for who she was. He loved the parts of her personality she had been previously told were flaws.
I hate to say it but I did not like this book at all. I had a problem with how horny Lizzie is. It was just over the top and I was cringing every time she would make a dirty joke or talk about how much she wanted sex. I don't think that I have ever read a book with such a horny main character. To say it was over the top is an understatement.
This was new to me author. I thought this book was quick, steamy, and all the good stuff! I really enjoyed it! Lizzy and Rake are such a great opposites attract couple! Which really makes it more fun! Lizzy is outgoing, a baker, flawed, and has ADHD. She ends up losing her baking job, so she goes out to a bar where she has a two night stand with an Aussie businessman. But when Lizzy finds out there steamy nights lead to an unexpected pregnancy, Rake moves to Philadelphia to be the father. Rake is clean and put together. These two don’t expect love when they agree to parent. This book had so much spicy scenes, which I love. I think Rake and Lizzy have great chemistry that leads them to love! Such a good read!
I didn’t really know much about this book but I was excited for it as I enjoyed A brush with love. That was nothing compared to how I felt about this one. Lizzie and Rake my be one of my all time favourite couples. I laughed out loud so many times with theses two. The whole story was so well done and left me with such a warm and fuzzy feeling. The way that Lizzie’s ADHD was written was perfect I especially loved how Rake saw her. I can’t gush enough about this book. I loved it
"Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake" by: Mazey Eddings is a delightful and compelling romance novel from the first page to the very end. I was worried I was in a reading slump and then came along "Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake." I absolutely adored our main characters Lizzie and her eventual other half Rake. This told the story of Lizzie who has ADHD and the struggles she encounters in her daily life. Lizzie's overall attitude and how she handles each situation that is presented to her was a breath of fresh air in that she tackled whether it was going to be messy or not. Rake is an absolute gentleman throughout the story (he screws up towards the end but I won't spoil it) but he was able to be a great guy without seeming like it was fake or forced.
Lizzie's relationship with her friends was great and it was nice to see a book that embraced female relationships without having to make everything about backstabbing or being catty. There were so many parts of this book that had me smiling and just getting completely consumed within the pages. I was sad to finish the book because it was the end of my journey with Lizzie and Rake. I would absolutely recommend this book to any fan of romance novels.
I had to DNF this book for now. I think that Mazey Edding's is a fantastic writer and I really believe that at another point in time I will like this book but something about trying to read it right now didn't work for me. I felt very anxious while reading this and it really affecting my ability to connect. I will absolutely be coming back to read this at another time and I can't wait to read the next book!!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the chance to review this ARC.
There were things I enjoyed about this book and others I didn't.
This book has a good premise and I like the tropes here, I was able to vibe with the writing after a while but a few things prevented me from really fully loving the book.
