I loved this rom-com - it made me smile, chortle, and laugh out loud heartily. It also had intense wistful moments and relatable family situations. And oh my the sex scenes were steamy! I can't wait to share this book recommendation with my friends.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for this ARC!
Lizzie is a woman who loves a good one night stand, works at a bakery, and has adult ADHD. Rake is an Australian man in town for work who just so happens to become Lizzie's one night stand, or so she thought. Lizzie left her keys at Rake's hotel room, so they have to see each other again (and neither are mad about it!) A few weeks later, Lizzie is throwing up, and on her last late warning for work. She later finds out that the reason she is so sick is because she is pregnant! How will she be bale to manage a kid when she struggles with taking her ADHD meds and staying on track? Lizzie tells Rake, and we hear their story unfold.
I am not a huge fan of books with steam, and this has some steam. Overall, it wasn't a lot so I was okay with it. If you enjoy the steamier scenes, it won't faze you! Lizzie and Rake's characters are great with more dynamic than you're expecting. Both come from their own experiences that still weigh heavily on them, making the book more enjoyable and less fluffy. (I did also appreciate the author's note at the beginning! I love that authors are labeling triggers/experiences that happen in the book before it even starts.)
I was also able to listen to this book and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the male narrator (that Australian accent!!) Overall, it was a good romance-y story!
I grabbed this one because I was a fan of Brush With Love and I wanted to learn more about this fun group of friends.
This was a face paced romcom, there were always things happening with Lizzie. Lizzie has adult ADHD, she has always been different, even as a child. Her parents weren't sure what to do with her, she never fit into their lifestyle and that shame has carried through to her adulthood. She doesn't like the way that people look at her, with pity. They look at her like she is a mess, like she will never grow up. The truth is, Lizzie is a mess, but it's not because she won't grow up, it is because her brain works differently than mine and yours and she just needed someone to appreciate that and love her for who she is.
Enter Rake. He is from Austrailia and they have a wonderful two night stand... that turns into more when she calls to inform him that she is pregnant. Rake takes a job across the pond to be with her and their child, but he has issues of his own. He is emotionally closed off after his last girlfriend did a number on him. Slowly he can feel the light that Lizzie shines on him cracking away those walls until there is nothing left but dust.
While I struggled to relate to Lizzie, I could appreciate her situation. There were times I wanted to shake her, and I know that is what the author was trying to get across here, that she is different and we must be accepting. My patience for her wore thin a lot of the times though and it was hard for me to really enjoy her. I would have liked to know why Rake was the way he was a lot sooner as well, especially since we were given his POV. When he finally told Lizzie what had happened to him and what he had lost, I was left feeling underwhelmed and the situation was just a bit odd for me.
I really feel like I am in the minority and that a lot of other people will adore Lizzie and her quirkiness, I just couldn't relate as well as I had hoped to. I ugre you to give it a try because you really might love it.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press, Mazey Eddings and Netgalley for an early copy.
Lizzie struggles with everyday life due to her unmanageable ADHD. She can't hold down her job, can't commit to a relationship and has a terse relationship with her family. She meets Rake at a bar and their connection is on fire. Rake is from Australia and vowed not to get into another relationship after being burned in the past. But when their dalliance ends up with an unplanned pregnancy, Rake uproots his life to help Lizzie, and be the father he always wanted to be, but never thought he could have. While they have a steamy connection, both decide to keep things platonic for their future child. Can they blend into each others lives? Can they share an apartment without giving into their lust?
Oh my gosh this book! I could not put it down. I loved Mazey's first book "A Brush With Love" but my love for this one surpasses it! I'm obsessed with the focus on neurodivergent love. We need more stories like this where the characters aren't perfect. It was messy, and charming and so real. It's funny, sexy and heartwarming. Rake is SAWOOON WORHTY. I related so hard to both main characters. Lizzie's family drama was so important and written so well. It was so relatable. While this can be read as a standalone, we do get a glimpse from some of our favorite characters from the previous book. I'm really hoping we get books for the rest of the friend group.
Thanks to the publisher for the ARC in return for an honest review. This book releases 9/6.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and Mazey Eddings for the advanced reading copy of Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake. The following review contains my thoughts & opinions.
Lizzie Blake is a talented baker with adult ADHD who is vibrant and full of life, with loyal friends and parents who never really saw her or loved her as she is. Rake Thompson is a marketing exec from Australia who works too much and is closed-off to anything resembling a relationship (even a physical one) after past hurts. After a two-night stand while Rake is visiting Philadelphia for work, they have a little surprise a few weeks later...' how will this impact their futures?
Mazey Eddings' first book, A Brush With Love, was one of my favorites earlier this year, and Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake is another wonderful read. She has created two characters that seem opposites yet complement each other in the best ways. Lizzie and Rake are two beautiful characters with depth and care for each other (even when trying to hide it). The ADHD representation was done so well. You can't help but love and root for them!
The last quarter of the book left me sobbing - there is so much heart and emotion, it's impossible not to feel all the things. The book hangover I now have from Lizzie & Rake is real. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a spicy romcom with depth and heart.
Lizzie was always an intriguing character in A Brush With Love so I was excited to pick up her book and I did enjoy it. Too much spice for me so I ended up skimming over some parts but Lizzie was such a sweet character. She was a mess but I loved her. I hate that her mother made her feel like no one would love her and treated her like she was broken, but Lizzie is so strong and she never changes who she is. I always love that Mazey realistically talks about mental disabilities like anxiety and now ADHD. I’m not someone who can attest to the accuracy of how it’s portrayed personally, but from what I’ve seen in others, it felt realistic and I better understood how it feels through Lizzie’s descriptions which was great.
I really liked Rake. Dan is still my favorite but I think Rake was such a good match for Lizzie, he grounded her and helped her stay organized and they were just cute and funny together.
Overall really cute. I loved the girls friend group and I’m excited for Indira’s book.
The epilogue was adorable and so is Evie 🥰📚
This is a really unique and fun rom-com! I love the neuro-divergent main character and the two had great chemistry! It was very spicy! I rooted so hard for Rake and Lizzie, I would love a sequel of their story!
Thanks to NetGalley and publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This novel literally started out with a bang. The love story was realistic and fun, and Rake proved to be best kind of book boyfriend too. I throughly enjoyed the dual POV from the love interests.
The story was brought to life through the wonderful narration in the audiobook as I alternated between reading and listening. Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake is a touching story you can't help but fall in love with the characters and the romance.
Thank you St. Martins Preiss for the ARC of this novel.
Like A Brush With Love, Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake is extremely readable, packed with vibrant characters and great representation, and I flew through it. I was already a fan of Lizzie after reading A Brush With Love, but my love for her is now cemented. I loved her loud, chaotic, cheery personality, and watching her develop through the book and gradually accept - and love - her ADHD brain for what it is.
Accidental pregnancy is not a trope I often read *but* the writing in this is so compelling that I enjoyed it all the same! Rake is a great foil to Lizzie, and I loved how he never shied away from showing Lizzie that he loved all her quirks. This series has been excellent in showing different kinds of people falling in love, and I can't wait to see what will happen in Indira's story!
(I did wish that we had expanded more on Rake's end of the story. I felt this was glossed over a little and most of the book centres around Lizzie's journey.)
Thanks for the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This story of Lizzie, who is neuro divergent and struggling with some effects of her ADHD, and her one-night stand, hunky Australian, Rake, when she accidentally becomes pregnant. I loved how the author represented the real struggles of ADHD. Rake was a super swoony hero. Great book!
This book was so easy to read and really fun as well. I loved Lizzie and Rake as a duo and I honestly just loved how real and funny and witty Lizzie is!
I requested this book to read primarily because of the adorable cover and the cute title. I didn't read too much about the actual book before starting it, but when I did start reading I realized there were a few things that typically I do not like in my romance novels (pregnancy and insta-love). However, this book worked for me! Eddings's writing style is effervescent and witty. Lizzie's neurodiversity is well-explained, insightful, and gave her a realistic depth. I like that she has a solid friend group who is supportive of her. Also, I like that she has a realistic body, is a bit 'messy', and is totally someone who I would want to hang out with on a semi-regular basis. Additionally, her baby daddy, Rake, is kind, observant, and in awe of Lizzie. I like that they have some conflicts but work them out for the most part, and the final act conflict ends up being handled nicely as well. I like the insights into Lizzie's family as well, and how she gets a few moments in building healthy boundaries there too.
Also, the sex scenes in this book are HOT HOT HOT! The steam level is great, the level of anticipation is on point, and there are plenty of them. Definitely some R rated writing in a very good way (but makes this book inappropriate for under 16 probably).
I think if you are a fan of the Brown Sisters trilogy, this book will probably be up your alley as well. I haven't read the first book in this series, but it does well as a stand alone. I will probably pick up more from Mazey Eddings in the future.
This book was such a fun read. Lizzie and Rake are such entertaining characters that you can’t help but root for them. Although I loved the first book, I think this one might be my new favorite in the series. I can’t wait to read #3!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC
“ Tell me what you’re thinking. “
“ I’m thinking, that I adore you. I’m thinking, that I want to murder every person that’s every hurt you. Get my knuckles bloody on anyone that ever dared tried to dim your light. “
I definitely enjoyed this book much more than the previous. While the beginning what is a little awkward between Rake and Lizzie, it definitely got better later on. I loved how much Rake tried to be there for Lizzie. It was so sweet on how supportive he was of her. Rake is always saying how amazing Lizzie is and trying to show her how incredible she is. I really like their chemistry about halfway through the book when they started sharing a place together. My only complaint really with the book was that I couldn’t get into the steamy scene at first. Those two nightstands were really awkward for me. I felt like they were out of context with the story.
Read if you like:
3rd person dual POVs
Two night stand
Surprised pregnancy
ADHD representation
Ausie hero
Forced proximity
Only one bed
Swoony hero
“There was no place in the world Lizzie Blake loved more than Philadelphia. From the food, to the people, to the kaleidoscope of neighborhoods, energy pulsed in every crack and crevice of her city, coursing through her with a bubbly type of joy. But, as Lizzie stared down at the massive pile of shit she’d just stepped in, she hated that she had to question whether it was dog or human.”
Wow! What an opening! The moment I cracked open this book and read this passage I just knew l was in for some fine romantic comedy! Well, guess what? Ms. Mazey Eddings does not disappoint!
In this heartwarming novel Philadelphia native Lizzie has a three night stand with hunky Australian Rake. Even though their rendezvous is only supposed to last until the weekend things become a bit dicey when Lizzie discovers that she’s pregnant. Yikes! Have I mentioned how much I love the surprise baby trope?! Anyway, hilarity ensues as these two fish by out of water travel the uncharted territory of coparenting. These two decide the best way to do that is by living together (hello, forced proximity!). Another thing Lizzie and Blake agree to do is to keep their hands off each other but in their case, easier said than done!
I must say that my favorite part of this book is the titular character Lizzie Blake. The author Mazey Eddings shares her own neurodiverseness with readers by giving us Lizzie. She is a lovable live out loud twenty something who happens to have ADHD. She is an extremely talented baker but it’s her inability to manage her disorder that prevents her from holding down a job. However, that doesn’t stop her from being the ball of sunshine that she is. It is when Lizzie learns that she is pregnant she decides to take control of her ADHD so that she can be the best mother that she can be for her baby. When she does everything falls into place for her.
One important thing that happens for Lizzie is that she lands a job at a bakery where she connects with the owner who understands her and her quirks. As a result, Lizzie flourishes as a cake designer and her creations, particularly those of the female anatomy brings the otherwise forgotten bakery local fame.
This is just one of many examples of the actions that Lizzie takes in order to build up her self-confidence. It’s just so incredible to watch her grow and finally figure out how much she rocks as a person!
Now let’s talk about Lizzie’s baby daddy! All work and no play makes Rake a very dull boy. This proverb accurately describes him. Well, at least until Lizzie crashes into his life! They just balance each other perfectly. Lizzie gets Drake to lighten up and not take life so seriously while he in turn supports her emotionally as she navigates pregnancy, her new job, as well as her interpersonal relationships with family and friends.
It is just so amazing to witness these two perfectly imperfect people fall in love. What was supposed to be a platonic parental partnership morphs into something wondrous. Lizzie and Drake find their person in each other and the baby they make together is a beautiful bonus!
I cannot recommend “Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake” enough! Thank you Netgalley for this fantastic book in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you so much to Netgalley & St. Martins Press/SMP Romance for this arc of Lizze Blake's Best Mistake!
I ADORED this book! I immediately loved Lizzie and saw a lot of myself in her. I could not stop laughing and smiling reading/listening to this book. I especially loved that the love interest's name was Rake and hearing some of my fave authors names dropped (Beverly Jenkins & Lisa Kleypas) in this. Lizzie's character came to life in the the best way, she was just so bright and relatable. The chemistry between her and Rake was done so well. I really loved Edding's last book A Brush with Love and this was SO MUCH BETTER. But the things I loved in ABWL in regards to mental health still appeared in this book with Lizzie's ADHD and was written in such a tasteful way. I also really loved the ending with her mom (this may be a hot take), but sometimes it is what it is.
I went back and forth between the audio and the narration was STELLAR. I need Will Peters to read more romance books asap.
You will want to pick this book up, I will be telling everyone to read it!
Earlier this year I was lucky enough to receive an ARC for A Brush With Love, Mazey Eddings first novel, and was pleased with it (you can see my review in my older posts). I was excited to be approved to get an early copy of her second novel, Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake, and I finally eked out some time to read it!
This book was cute, but I was losing my mind with the third person narrative. I counted the amount of times it said "Lizzie" in the first two pages and it was I think 12 or 13? Absolutely too many times if you ask me. BUT ... once I got over that the story really picked up.
Eddings does a great job of writing neurodivergent characters. I remember the MC in her first novel suffering from a panic disorder, and in this story the MC Lizzie has ADHD. She describes them in a way that is approachable and understandable, and really hits home that just because someone is different doesn't make them any better or worse than you.
Back to the story ... This was quirky and cute and Rake was a perfect gentleman. The way he looked at Lizzie was so precious and I found myself grinning and giggling more than I expected to. Also liked that it was a cousin of her first novel; not related at all except for the first book which followed one of Lizzie's friends love story (reminded me of Jasmine Guillory's Wedding Date series).
I liked witnessing the two of them come to terms with their "feelings" and wished nothing but the best for them. At times it seemed a bit too easy, but for what it's worth I didn't expect any big issues given the plot arc of her first novel.
I wish I could have loved this, but I just hated the third person narrative so much it made me more frustrated than anything.
I gave this one a 3.5 ⭐️ but I still would recommend it to anyone who's a fan of quirky contemporary romances or anyone looking to read some more neurodivergent characters!
Thank you NetGalley and St.Martin's press for this ARC.
Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake was an unexpected delight!!! Why unexpected? Well, I thought the first book A Brush With Love was okay but I didn't love it. Also, Lizzie Blake has two tropes I tend to not be a huge fan of: surprise pregnancy and insta love. And yet, against these odds I really, truly enjoyed this book. Lizzie Blake is just such a lovable character that I couldn't help but love her story. She's quirky, fun, funny and unique. Lizzie's struggles endear you to her and are relatable. The chemistry and romance between Lizzie and Rake was wonderful. I enjoyed getting to witness a romance throughout the various stages of pregnancy. A few things made this a 4 star read for me: I wish we had further development of Lizzie's relationship with her brother and sister in law (what we got was great I just wanted more), somehow I wasn't completely satisfied by where we were left with Lizzie's parents, and there was a bit in the middle where the pacing felt a little slow.
But all in all this book is a huge success! I seriously think Mazey Eddings did a great job with this story. Because of Lizzie Blake, I will read more of what Eddings writes!
This would be a definite case of don't judge a book by its cover! While I thought this was going to be a cute, fluffy rom-com based on the cover, I received so much more! I loved that this was an accidental pregnancy troupe - that you don't see a lot of. Lizzy was so real and how ADHD affected how she lived her life. I loved Rake from the beginning and could not love him more as the story progressed! I would give this five stars and would press this into anyone's hands!
Thank you so much to Netgalley and St. Martins Press for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
I am really trying to come up with something positive to say about the book and find at least one thing I liked, but that is proving hard to do.
I am by no means a prude. I throughly enjoy open door, steamy romcom reads but to me this one was just crude, cringey, and over the top. A lot of the interactions had me grimacing and I found myself skimming a lot of the read to bypass these interactions.
What I do appreciate is that Eddings portrays characters with quirks and does a great job of representing mental health. Unfortunately, after reading this and Brush with Love, I have determined she is not the author for me.
