Thanks to St. Martin’s Griffin for the ARC!
My first accidental pregnancy trope read and dare I say I really enjoyed it! It was the perfect trope to bring Lizzie and Rake together, balancing their personalities to make a unique but sweet relationship. I love the tenderness Rake showed to Lizzie, making her feel valued, seen, and sheltered like no one had before. And of course I loved Lizzie, spunky and lively and baking erotic treats. Her ADHD was handled so well and Mazey is great at discussing mental health stigmas in ways that work well in her stories. The “found family” Lizzie has and boundaries set with her biological family were really great storylines as well, making for a compulsive read I couldn’t put down. I finished in a few hours! I will say this started off with more of a “bang” than I usually prefer, but it worked for the trope and I was held in by the plot.
Wow. Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake was such a great read! I love Lizzie so much. She was such a great character. She exuded so much joy, confidence, and happiness. I really enjoyed watching her outgrow the confines of her childhood trauma and own every aspect of who she is, and how much Rake celebrated and praised those parts of her she always thought made her unlovable.
I thought Lizzie and Rake’s unconventional romance was a great reminder that you can’t control when you fall in love or the circumstances surrounding it.
I felt this book on every level. My “best mistake” and I are celebrating 5 years of marriage soon, our daughter is 6 1/2 and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I can’t wait to buy a hard copy of this to add to my collection!
Bonus: the spice level was PERFECT.
Thank you to NetGalley, Mazey Eddings, and St Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read and review this eARC.
I absolutely loved this book! Lizzie is a great heroine as she tries to cope with the problems that her ADHD presents for her. Add in the coldness and intolerance that her parents had shown her all her life, and it’s a miracle that she’s still such a sweet, vibrant personality. The author writes that she also has ADHD so I felt that this was a portrayal that gave readers a real insight into what it’s like to have ADHD.
And Rake is a wonderful book boyfriend as he just wants to care for Lizzie and give her what she needs. He doesn’t mind her ADHD and sees beneath her surface mix-ups to the wonderful person she really is.
I had two minor quibbles. I would have appreciated a brief explanation as to why Rake’s parents chose that name for him. It’s such an odd name and the subject of several jokes in the story. He could have been given a brief explanation.
A bigger hole seemed to be explaining how Lizzie has such a close group of friends who are willing to do anything to support her. We’re told that Lizzie had a very tough time in high school with kids bullying her so it doesn’t seem like they’re friends from her childhood. And she left home right after high school and traveled around the world for a couple of years. Then she said that she returned to Philadelphia to live with one of her close friends where she practiced baking. So they didn’t meet in college. When and where did these four women meet and become such close friends?
Those quibbles aside, this was a great read and I highly recommend it. Don’t make the mistake of not picking this up.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
Lizzie has always been considered a bit "too much" but the author is here to remind the readers how it is normal and how people need to be more accepting of everyone. But I have to say her energy does literally come off loud and clear with the author's writing. I am sure everyone is going to love Lizzie but I felt Rake was amazing as well and was absolutely a model hero for all rom coms to come. Rake and Lizzie handle a surprise pregnancy right away in the beginning of the book and it was a riot all the way till the delivery. Their relationship went through various phases during these 8 months and it was one hell of a rollercoaster ride to enjoy!
Wow! I loved this book! Lizzie Blake is a bit of a train wreck, in the most loveable way. She has a heart of gold, but her ADHD makes life difficult as she can't make it to work on time or can't finish her laundry as she gets distracted too easily. She tries to make life simpler by avoiding relationships and instead she enjoys the excitement and ease of one-night stands. All that changes when she meets Rake, who has also sworn off relationships after being burned in the past. Lizzie and Rake have undeniable, explosive chemistry leading to some steamy reading! And that's where it should end, but two weeks later Lizzie realizes that she's pregnant, surprise, surprise!
Rake and Lizzie decide to make a go of living together platonically and preparing to co-parent their future child. I loved the tension between Rake & Lizzie as they undertook co-habitation through a difficult & emotional time, and yes, there was more steam!
Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake showcases what Mazey Edding’s does best: featuring human emotions and neurodivergent characters in true form.
Lizzie is an anxious, ADHD woman who has a purse chalk-full of necessities, a love of baking the sweetest treats and a kick ass group of best friends. All that is left.. is a gorgeous man with an Australian accent. One night, she has an online date who doesn’t show and hence, here comes the Australian hunk of a man named Rake. Rake and Lizzie agree to just have a one night stand. Rake’s going back to Australia, Lizzie doesn’t do relationships. Yet what promises as a one night may turn out to be Lizzie’s best mistake.
Rake is an Australian hunk who is not up for emotional connections. His last girlfriend couldn’t last his work habits and left him broken-hearted. When he’s in America, he’s there for friendship and meets his favorite one night stand at a bar: Lizzie. He isn’t planning on anything else besides a fun time. But oh boy, his plans are about to be a best mistake for him too.
I adored reading Mazey Edding’s sophomore novel: Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake. As an ADHD’er myself, I instantly connected with Lizzie and kept yelling out “me too” at the many things that Edding’s described as Lizzie. I fell for Rake and Lizzie’s relationship automatically and wanted the best for both of these characters, also known as a happy ending. Mazey’s writing style connected me to Lizzie’s world of Philadelphia and made me want to live in “The Brush with Love” Universe. Edding’s latest just solidified to me more that this is an author that you NEED to have on your “must read” list. Fans of romantic comedies and down to Earth characters will enjoy Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake.
This hovered between three and four stars for me. I loved reading the developing romance and partnership between Lizzie and Rake, but the sex scenes were a little much, mostly at the beginning.
Lizzie Blake is a hot mess. Emphasis on the mess and yet she is living life to the fullest with ADHD.
Mazey Eddings gives us a window to how it is to live with ADHD and the many feelings that with it while not having a supportive family that values and respects individuality.
I loved the quirky and inappropriate retorts Lizzie would have. Rake will sweep you off your feet just like he did with Lizzie with his Australian accent and kindhearted sweetness.
When Lizzie is fired from yet another job, she’s not surprised – besides having ADHD, her parents have always told her she’s irresponsible, messy, and lazy. She heads to a bar to take solace in a date, and assumes Rake will be her usual one-night stand… but when she gets pregnant, Rake insists on moving from Australia to support her and the baby. The narrative is witty and fast-paced, but Lizzie was such a complete disaster (and seemingly unwilling to help herself) that I really struggled to empathize with her or care about what happened to her. I felt bad for Rake, and like he had the patience of a saint, but I appreciated the author’s portrayal of how learning disabilities can make people see the world in a different way, even if it was a bit heavy-handed in the overall message of “let’s celebrate these differences instead of making people conform.” In spite of disliking Lizzie, I still enjoyed this book, and will be looking for more by Mazey Eddings.
Loved the representation in this book. Both Lizzie and Rake struggled with communication and working through their problems together. However, they are always looking out for each other, even though they encounter many challenges in their partnership (under less than ideal circumstances).
Lizzie's ADHD was often debilitating, and her family of origin was so horrible to her. Rake was a breath of fresh air--accepting, affirming, and loving. This book represents well what it means to love someone unconditionally, and many people will find comfort in it.
After reading and absolutely LOVING A Brush With Love, I immediately requested Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake on NetGalley and was so excited to get approved!!
Eddings writing style works SO well. I adored this book. Even though it had a trope that I don't typically enjoy, Eddings made it work. I loved how much Lizzie grew throughout the book and learned to manage her ADHD in a way that worked for her. The group's friendship continued to flourish. And I adored Rake. He was such a great book boyfriend!
Thank you to NetGalley and St Martin's Press for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review!
I enjoyed this book a lot. It did have a trope that typically I'm not very fond about but I think it was done sooo well. I loved the adult ADHD rep sooo much. All of the characters are so lovable and I can't wait to see more of them and the little one in the next books! I loved how much Rake helped Lizzie and how much he truly loved, supported and cared about her! It was so beautiful. Their relationship was so wholesome and adorable. I adore Lizzie and Rake!
Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake by Mazey Eddings
Lizzie Blake has adult ADHD and her brain is not wired like everyone else. She doesn't make it to work on time, is messy and can never seem to get it right. Lizzie likes to hook-up with one night stands nothing serious. She meets Rake at a bar and the next thing you know she is breaking her rules to only date someone once. Anyways she sees him two days in a row and they have a a lot of sex in Rake's hotel room. Well Lizzie gives Rake an outdated condom and you can guess what happens.
I so connected with Lizzie at times her character drove me crazy but I still got her. I related to her in the way her mother and her relationship. I have something similar type of relationship with my mother. At times during the story I laughed so hard and other times I was so sad for Lizzie.
I love the speed of the book it was solid tempo read for me. Once I started I wanted to finish the book. This is the first time reading Mazey Eddings work and I really enjoyed it. I don't have ADHD but I can get absent minded and forget things sometimes so I could relate to Lizzie. If you like humor and some solid sex scenes in the book then this Rom Com is for you and I suggest you read it.
Will Lizzie ever get her life in order and Will Rake and Lizzie get into a relationship to find out you must read this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for a free copy of this book for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
4.5 stars! Thank you NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review. I feel so blessed to have been able to read this book!
I am absolutely amazed by this book!
Lizzie and Rake were so cute together and I love that Lizzie finally found support in someone. Being neurodivergent is not easy and it just made Lizzie’s character all that more relatable and lovable!
The ADHD representation was great and it made Lizzie so open and vulnerable.
I adored seeing what it’s like to live with ADHD and how that impacts daily life.
I have to admit, the surprise pregnancy is not one of my favorite tropes but WOW it was done so well in this book. I love how it addressed the topic of finding a career you love even though it might not be the most conventional. Lizzie was seriously so strong and tried not to let anyone put her down.
I love how much Rake cared for Lizzie and how understanding he was. He was amazing as a support system and i really enjoyed how he wanted to understand the way Lizzie’s brain worked!
This book was amazing! It was funny, charming, and heartbreaking all at once.
This was a cute read, but it didn't really stand out to me among a sea of other romance books. It was predictable and seemed to follow tropes you would typically expect. I think the characters were interesting, especially Lizzie with her ADHD and coping with her family expectations. I didn't realize when I started this read that it was similar characters to a Brush with Love so that was a pleasant surprise.
I think I would only recommend this book to people that really love the genre. I was a little put-off at the beginning with the casual hook-up. It is not my style and the explicit descriptions didn't do anything for me when there was no emotional connection between characters.
I enjoyed Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake more than I was anticipating! I usually don't read books with the accidental pregnancy trope, but I wanted to give the trope another chance, and this didn't disappoint. Lizzie's pregnancy is a majority of the book, but the slow build romance between her and Rake was the highlight for me. We also get a glimpse update into Harper and Dan's relationship and their supportive friend group. Although it seemed random for Rake to uproot his life to be there for Lizzie, his motivations are revealed later in the story as he allows himself to be more emotionally vulnerable. Lizzie is a relatable character, and her strained relationship with her parents is very realistic and heartbreaking. Rake is the perfect partner and defender and always lets Lizzie know that she is loved and valued. I loved them together!
I recommend this for anyone looking for a steamy romance that includes ADHD rep and centers emotional growth, trust, and care.

👍🏼👍🏼 the BEST kind of GRUMPY-SUNSHINE
Lizzie Blake is such a delight of a sunshine. I dare you to not fall in love with her. It is impossible. She is such a radiant and rich character. So well done.
Also central to the Lizzie Blake experience is her ADHD. This is so wonderfully and vividly described. And I loved how the author described not only Lizzy’s personal experiences in managing her ADHD brain but how it effects those around her for better and for worse.
Lizzy’s coping mechanism of choice is physical intimacy. Her mind quiets in the sweaty heat of the moment. Her mind (and body) craves those quiet moments.
Enter the hero of our dreams, Rake. OMG a large, Australian, emotionally-unavailable, super organized and controlled man.
Lizzy can’t help herself when she runs into him. She immediately sets her sights and Rake is equally helpless. More than one.
And then Lizzy returns to her whirlwind life and Rake goes home to Australia.
Until Lizzy realizes she’s pregnant. And Rake drops everything to support her. Platonically, of course - he’s just there to help
I know that accidental pregnancy tropes are not for everyone, but in the context of Lizzy’s life it really fits in. It is so believable and well-written. And also treated with so much care. Lizzy and her decisions are respected the whole time which is so nice. So this is me telling you - there is a huge pregnancy trope, but give it a chance. This book is SO GOOD. I think you just might love it. I certainly did! You may even leak a tear or ten. Lizzy and Rake really plucked my heartstrings in the end.
Mazey Eddings you are a genius in your representation, your trope, your tension and conflict. Thank you for once again writing a gem of a book. I am absolutely dying to read the next one!!
💛Book Review: Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake by Mazy Eddings 🍰
5/5 ⭐️
Trigger Warnings: Pregnancy and Emotional abuse
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC! This book comes out September 6, 2022.
I absolutely adored this book! Lizzie is such an amazing character and has so much depth. Rake is a dream and I loved experiencing the way they meet and their partnership. Their chemistry is 🔥 too! I never really enjoyed the accidental pregnancy troupe until now. This was so well done 👏🏻
I love the way the author shows mental illness in this book, specifically ADHD. I’ve really enjoyed reading books where the characters have mental illness to learn more about myself and others that struggle with this. Thank you Mazey for making me feel seen through Lizzie 💛
I will definitely be reading whatever Mazey Eddings writes next and I’m excited to add this book to my shelf ✨
*ARC REVIEW*
When reading A Brush With Love, I found myself fixated more on Harper's friend Lizzie than on anyone else in the book. She was spunky and vivacious. Her colorful nature practically lept off the page. I was thrilled when I saw Lizzie got her own story, and am glad to say it did not disappoint.
The book starts off with a forgetful and distracted Lizzie who is in survival mode at her job. Though after one too many chances and bouts of lateness, she is fired. Luckily for her, her life changes as she meets a handsome Australian around the same time. A fun filled weekend follows, and then the two go their own way.
After Rake, the Australian, goes home; Lizzie finds out that she is pregnant. The rest of the story is a really sweet story of two people trying to make it work with a baby on the way.
I loved Lizzie as a character and found the story to be much more complex than the average rom-com. Topics of mental health, tense family relationships, finding a new career path, and preparing to bring a human into the world were all covered beautifully. I got to see who Lizzie Blake was from all angles, and it just emphasized her effervescence so much more.
The plot was wonderful (I LOVED the part where Lizzie and Rake went to meet her family... and the drama that ensued), the main characters were strong, and the spice was pretty good.
Now I just need the rest of the friend group to get their own book!
What I loved:
✨ The characters. Lizzie had me cracking up multiple times, she was hilarious. Lizzie and Rake were so cute, and Lizzie’s friend group was dream-worthy. It’s been days since I read this book & I’m still thinking about the relationship between Lizzie and Rake. He was a dream.
✨ Lizzie finally standing up to her mean mom. Her parents were awful!
✨ Having a MC with ADHD
✨ This cover is to die for
“What I am saying is, just because your brain works differently from neurotypicals, it doesn’t mean you deserve to be valued any less. It doesn’t mean your love is a burden or a liability.”
Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake by Mazey Eddings will be release on September 6th, be sure to check it out - I promise you won’t be disappointed!
