Thank you so much to St. Martin's Press for a softcopy of this book. Also to NetGalley.
This is such a cute, quirky and hilarious rom-com novel. I particulary liked the cover design at first not knowing what's inside is more likeable.
The settings, characters and turn of events were all fun. Turns out some mistakes will change our lives for the better 💗
I received this book as an ARC and this is my review. I loved this book! Mazey Eddings has the rom-com going - I also loved her “A Brush With Love” which I also read as an ARC. “Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake” is laugh out loud funny and the characters are priceless! The situations are hysterical and the info about ADHD is helpful. I totally recommend this book if the reader enjoys a great story with hilarious possibilities and outcomes.
This was the cutest rom-com !
Everything from Lizzie’s (found) family, to her hilarious banter with Rake, made this an enjoyable read. There is not much plot in the first half, but characters themselves make up for it, and once the story picks up it’s difficult to put this book down.
The ‘atypical’ family model rep is great, and Eddings also covers the topic of ableism within a suburban family setting.
The story and descriptions can be a bit awkward at times but I would still include this in a recommendation list if the opportunity arises.
What a quirky, sweet book. This took the typical “supposed to be a one night stand” trope and gave it a twist. Lizzie’s growth through the story and how she coped was so interesting to read.
This was such a fun, hilarious, and swoony read. I adored this book so much more than I thought I would & I already knew I was going to love it! I read and loved A Brush With Love, which is also by Mazey, and I didn’t think I would find another book that would top that, but I did. Mazey’s style of writing just sucks you in, keeps you hooked, and doesn’t let you go. I am a huge fan of books that make me laugh and this book had me dying of laughter with some big ol’ cackles. I’m a huge romcom reader so I pretty much enjoy every romance book I read BUT this omg, this book just exceeded my expectations. The characters are very relatable, very raw and very flawed. You get swoony tender moments, as well as some hot steamy face-sitting moments. Oh, and you also get a surprise pregnancy. SURPRISE! Lizzie’s baby is a product of a one-night stand spent with a hot Australian man named Rake. Yes, Rake. Lizzie doesn’t imagine ever seeing him again, especially since he lives in Australia. To her surprise, Rake packs up and moves to the U.S. to support Lizzie in any way he can. Will the time spend together bring them close together in a romantic way, or will the be able to stick to just being co-parents?
You can expect:
* ADHD Rep
* Laugh Out Loud Romcom
* Based in Philadelphia
* Found Family
* Sunshine x Grump
* Surprise Pregnancy
* Open Door Romance
* Forced Proximity (Roommates)
* Dual POV
* Sex Positive Characters
I don’t think I mesh well with this authors writing style. I appreciate the opportunity to read and review this book!
I really wanted to like this book and had anticipated a delightful rom-com. However, the character Lizzie was unlikeable, no filters in her life and no direction. While I understand she has ADHD, that’s no excuse for the choices in her life that are so darn chaotic. Also, not being a prude, the coarse language was just too gratuitous to make any impact in the direction of the plot. I don't feel that the writing was done well, nor was the trope original. It did not grab me.
Many thanks to #netgalley #lizzieblakemakesamistake for the opportunity to read and review this book.
mazey eddings has done it again. absolutely loved this book. after a brush with love i knew i had to read more by the author and im happy to say shes solidified her place on my auto buy list!
Gah! So I like the overall story of Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake, but a lot about Lizzie drives me absolutely crazy. Lizzie has ADHD, and parents that didn’t think she fit into their perfect, ordered world. This leaves her feeling insecure and lacking confidence in the things she excels at. This doesn’t bother me at all; I’ve known someone treated poorly by her parents because she didn’t check the boxes that mattered to them, and it is heartbreaking. The damage parents can do by not embracing their children for who they are can have long reaching consequences. Lizzie has to learn to value herself. But she’s also indecisive, has absolutely no filter, is a complete slob, and so completely checks out of reality that she can’t be relied on by anyone. It finally takes getting pregnant (by using condoms that are expired because she didn’t know they could expire) for her to start taking steps in a way that works for her to help keep her on track. Fortunately for the baby daddy, Rake, he loves all the things about her that would make me want to tear my hair out if I had to live with someone like Lizzie again. Rake is pretty tightly wound, and was hurt in the past by an ex-girlfriend, so despite Lizzie providing a balance to his straight arrow personality, he still has a few things to figure out himself. I do give major props to Eddings for how she writes scenes between Lizzie and her mom at the end of the book. Things with people we love may not turn out the way we want them to, but it takes a lot of courage to address those issues head-on. A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I adored this book. I love, love Lizzie! She was such an amazing MC. It was an absolutely delightful read! This author has officially become an auto buy!
I knew this book would be amazing because I love a surprise pregnancy and Mazey who always adds some heart to her stories
I enjoyed the portrayal of ADHD, and how Lizzy felt and was dealing with it. Knowing that someone thinks differently and processes differently doesn't make them lazy is key.
Rake is Aussie and super understanding and supportive at a time with so much uncertainty.
I just loved everything about it, the characters, the locations, and the drama it was all on point and exactly what is needed for a surprise pregnancy.
I would recommend everyone read the first book and the second book in this series
Mazey is quickly becoming an auto-buy author for me because I loved LIZZIE BLAKE even more than A BRUSH WITH LOVE (which I didn't think was possible). Lizzie was my favorite side character from ABWL and seeing her shine in her own story was truly wonderful. She's so relatable and lively while simultaneously living in a constant state of raw vulnerability due to her ADHD. As someone who got diagnosed as an adult, I related to her struggles in the workplace and her fraught relationship with her family and I think this book will be very valuable to the people who need it most.
This is the second book in the A Brush With Love series. I really enjoyed the first book by this author, and was so excited when I saw Lizzie got her own story. I am glad to say I loved this book!
Both characters in this book were so great. Lizzie was loving and chaotic. Rake, our Aussie charm, was the perfect match for her. Both characters are flawed, but so lovable. This book will have you feeling all the emotions while reading it, and you won’t want to put it down. I am usually not a fan of the unexpected pregnancy trope, but the author did a good job with it. I highly recommend checking this book out, when it releases!
Thank you Netgalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Interesting romance. Lizzie meets Rake and they seem to hit it off. Their encounter makes a baby and they agree to co-parent. They end up loving each other. Quite a bit of information on adult ADHD. Quite a bit of family dysfunction. I honestly cannot say I enjoyed this book. ADHD or not, Lissie is still an adult. Some of her actions were just a bit much. I'm glad she eventually seemed to arrive at a place where she was okay with who she is and her abilities.
Well, this is probably a case of not for me. This starts with the main trope (which is stated in the blurb), of unplanned pregnancy. It's not really a trope I care for, but I was hoping it not being a surprise to me as the reader would help me enjoy it more, but it didn't.
Part of my problem is I enjoyed Rake and Lizzie talking to each other, but never really felt a connection between them. I felt like it was a bit too instalove until the very end of the book. I liked the ADHD representation, but I also had some qualms with how it was presented.
I loved Eddings writing and one liners, and I enjoyed the leads enough to think I just didn't like them in this particular story. I needed more development between them before the pregnancy.
Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake lost me at the opening when our heroine chased through the streets by someone she made eye contact with at the bar, then makes out with her chaser.
No thanks.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC for an honest review.
The amount of love and joy this book brought me is going to absolutely undo me.
When I read “A Brush With Love” Mayze’s writing voice was familiar to me and very comforting. When I was approved for Lizzie’s book on NetGalley, I was excited to read from this author again. “Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake” is probably my favorite read of 2022 and possibly one of my top 10 favorite books ever. The was Mayze described Lizzie and her neurodivergence with her ADHD was so refreshing and completely absorbed me in the entire experience that is this book. I really felt so many emotions reading this book and the longing for a happy ending for my favorite girl was palpable! Mayze delivers impeccable characters, beautiful friendships, and spicy times in this novel and I can’t wait to yell at people to read it when it’s out in the world in September. It’s real, overwhelming, absorbing and undeniably awesome. A little bird tells me this book will become a rom com favorite and I really hope it opens more doors to have more neruodivergent main characters leading the pages into happily ever afters
I loved Eddings' debut so I had high hopes for this follow-up, and it exceeded those! Lizzie and Rake were absolutely delightful together. Lizzie is a heroine you relate to and root for from the get-go. She was a great quirky-best-friend character in book 1, and I loved to see her transition into a fully fleshed-out protagonist with her own challenges, dreams, and- of course - romance in this book. Eddings' writing is warm and witty, and I loved her ADHD representation as well as gentle handling of the choices a woman can face with unexpected pregnancy that doesn't villainize one choice or another, even though this particular heroine chooses to keep her baby. I'm really looking forward to the next book in this world with this lovable cast of characters!
Thank you Netgalley for the advanced listening copy! I really enjoyed this sweet, steamy, and charming contemporary romance from Mazey Eddings, this being the second book in the Brush with Love series of a group of female friends. Lizzie is a baker in Philadelphia, who just wants a good time with guys to blow off steam from her ADHD and life, when she meets Rake at a bar. But what she thought was a quick fling, turns into a lot more. I really like Eddings' writing style. I think she does a good job blending mental health representation, hard topics, big feelings, all with grace, charm, and comedy. This can be hard to do in my opinion, but I think this author really nails it. Saying that, the main romantic trope in the story is not my favorite (be sure to carefully read the synopsis before reading this book), but I think it worked in this insta-love story (which is also well done and fits with the tone of the book). I enjoyed listening to this book: the two narrators both represented the vibe and tone of the main characters really well. Overall, I highly recommend this book: it’s swoony, funny, thoughtful, and has really poignant moments of self care, self love, and romantic love. I recommend this story for fans of contemporary romance, mental health rep, and romantic comedy.
Reading books about pregnancy, either planned or unplanned, is hard for me. I struggle with infertility and during bad mental health days, I will actively avoid romance with pregnancy. I was not aware that this was a part of the plot when I requested the ARC, but I appreciate how the author handled it. I also appreciate the ADHD representation in the novel.
What I do not appreciate, is the use of abortion to delineate between the "good" heroine, and the "evil-ex". No part of me believes that this was the author's intent, but it does not play well in today's climate.
