I typically don't like the accidental pregnancy trope, and I also wasn't a big fan of Mazey Eddings' first book, but this book was a very pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed the story line and felt that they handled the accidental pregnancy well. I liked that Rake stood up for Lizzie when it mattered to her, and even when he didn't, it wasn't intentional, it was more because he was speechless/shocked, and he still ended up making it right. I liked that their relationship blossomed throughout the pregnancy and they were partners throughout.
I love books that highlight messy, imperfect love for characters that are messy and imperfect themselves. It was hot. It was emotional. It made me cry into a bowl of soup.
Well, I'll admit I almost abandoned this book immediately. I have a VERY hard time with this trope, for absolutely every reason, and it usually makes me completely ditch the book and move on. I decided to give it a shot after friends recommendations, and because I have previously enjoyed Mazey's writing.
While I struggled with the entire story because of the trope, I also struggled with the MC. Maybe it was because I was already annoyed but it felt like everything she did bothered me. In saying all of this, I still clearly enjoyed it because I rated it 4 stars. The relationship between our MC's was beautiful and natural feeling and I loved the development and growth Lizzie had with her family. It wasn't super memorable, but it was definitely enjoyable.
I requested this book not knowing that it was the 2nd book in a series but solely based on the cute cover :). It turned out to have romance, steamy lust, great friendships, family issues, and much more. Lizzie’s story was a good one, like a good friend sometimes you wanna scold her and sometimes you just want to give her a big hug. Great book!
I had really high hopes for this book after Mazey's debut and I was not disappointed at all. This will definitely be on my favorites of 2023 list. It follows Lizzie, a baker with ADHD who isn't interested in relationships, who meets Rake, an Aussie visiting the US for work, in a bar and decides he is the person she wants to have a ONS with. However, she ends up losing her job and decides to make it a two-night stand. Rake goes back home and then Lizzie finds out she's pregnant. The story then goes on with Rake coming back to the US because he wants to co-parent platonically with Lizzie.
I love this book. Having an #OwnVoices ADHD book was incredible and meaningful. It wasn't a joke or quirky personality traits, it was something that was hard for Lizzie and interfered with a lot in her life. I love a sharing-space-trying-not-to-bone situation and this one was played out so well. Stakes were high. There's a bit of family drama in this story as well, which was sad, but resolved in a way that made the most sense instead of the way they are typically resolved. I cannot wait book 3 that follows Indira!
I received this book for free from netgalley for an honest opinion
Sizzling romance with just the right amount of back and forth between the characters to keep me interested.
he can win me any day of the week. I was hooked and loved it from start to finish. Must read it and you will understand and be hooked.
I was very excited to read about Lizzie in the next installment by Mazey Eddings. I am not a huge fan of the unexpected pregnancy trope, or really pregnancy tropes in general.. With that being said I think that Mazey Eddings does an excellent job portraying it and make it a part of the story without it dominating the rest of the story, and the relationship building between the two characters. I think Lizzie is a great representation of what it can be like to have ADHD, as well as being a person that people in general think is just "too much". I loved how vibrant Lizzie was, and getting to see her from Rake's POV gave insight into appreciating the little things about the people you love and viewing them from a new perspective. I enjoyed the dual perspective that kept the story moving and allowed us to see if from both sides. I also loved the idea of finding a hot Australian man in a bar, and having him drop everything and move across the country for you LOL.
"For anyone who's been told they're too loud. Too emotional. Too much. You are the perfect amount of enough."
This was a charming and sweet romance. I enjoyed this author's novel A Brush With Love -- and I think Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake was even better! The book deals with complex topics like ADHD and complicated family relationships and handles those topics in a sensitive manner.
I really liked the MC, Lizzie Blake - she is brave, persistent and full of life. Rafe was a great character too and exactly what Lizzie needed in her best and worst moments. I'd say I didn't expect the book to get as steamy as it did based on the front cover - I definitely had to stick my head in the freezer a few times!
Overall, a fun and delightful read. I'll definitely check out what Mazey Eddings writes next!
This was a very cute and STEAMY romcom about Lizzie, a baker with ADHD, and Rake, the hot Australian marketing guy who accidentally gets her pregnant. Lizzie decides to keep the baby and she and Rake decide to give platonic co-parenting a go. Since it’s a romance, you can probably guess that the “platonic” part doesn’t go so well, but what comes out of their efforts is a really sweet and supportive partnership.
Overall this was a fun, fast read.
Rating : 3.5 out of 5
Blurbs :
Lizzie has made endless mistakes. Kitchen fires, pyramid schemes, bangs (of the hair and human variety), you name it, she’s done it… and made a mess of it too. One mistake she’s never made is letting anyone get closer to her than a single hook-up. But after losing yet another bakery job due to her uncontrolled ADHD, she breaks her cardinal rule and has a two-night-stand that changes everything.
Once burned, twice shy, Rake has given up on relationships. And feelings. And any form of intimacy for that matter. Yet something about charming, chaotic Lizzie has him lowering his guard. For two nights, that is. Then it’s back home to Australia and far away from the pesky feelings Lizzie pulls from him. But when Lizzie tells him she’s got an unexpected bun in the oven, he’ll do whatever it takes to be a part of his child’s life… except be emotionally vulnerable, obviously. He’s never going to make that mistake again.
Through a series of mishaps, totally “platonic” single bed sharing, and an underground erotic baking scheme, Lizzie and Rake learn that even the biggest mistakes can have the most beautiful consequences.
Thoughts :
It's an okay NA romcom with dual POV where us, as the readers, could enjoy both perspectives and enjoy whatever angst and trouble await the characters. It's sweet and fun. Highly recommend this book! Love Rake and Lizzie!
Thanks Netgalley for the copy!
Hmmm so I think I’ve realized that the unexpected pregnancy trope isn’t my favorite. I know it gets a lot of hate and I sort of get why.
That said I did enjoy this book! Lizzie is a really great character living life with ADHD and making it work. Rake is a sexy Australian with a wonderful family that I sort of want to take home haha.
All in all I definitely recommend 3.5 stars!
Thank you NetGalley for my copy in exchange for my honest review!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the eARC of this book!
I am a big fan of Mazey Eddings. Her style of writing and sense of humor just work for me. A Brush with Love was one of my favorite books of 2022, so I was very excited for Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake. One of the things that I appreciated most about this book was the inclusion and portrayal of Lizzie's ADHD, something that I know is deeply personal to Mazey Eddings. I also have ADHD, and although mine does not exactly line up with Lizzie's, there were many times reading this story that I felt seen. One thing that I struggled with in this book was the way Rake's ex was vilified for her termination of the pregnancy. I think that the intention was to show that Rake had been upset to find that there had been a disconnect in their relationship and the communication, but it still came across a bit muddled. I have seen many reviews that have articulated these concerns more effectively than I can. For the most part, I enjoyed Lizzie and Rake as characters. This book still made me smile and laugh. It was probably 3.5 to 4 stars for me, but I wouldn't recommend it to others without some kind of disclaimer about Rake's ex.
This was a cute rom com, with a whole lot of sexual activity - so be prepared.
Lizzie has ADHD, and she flings herself into things without a lot of thought. So, when she meets Rake, an attractive Aussie in Philadelphia for a meeting, she picks him up and one thing leads to another. She inadvertently leaves something in his hotel room, so another night of fun awaits.
However, 2 weeks later, Lizzie realizes she might be pregnant. Rake flies back to the US to ask Lizzie to allow him to co-parent with her. She agrees, and the rest is the two of them trying to make it work.
If you are looking for a steamy romance with a flawed heroine, this would be a book for you.
I liked how kind Rake was, and how bold Lizzie was. I am not sure I think someone would move halfway around the world for someone they had a 2 night stand with - but I guess stranger things have happened.
This is a delightful romantic comedy that gets dirty when it needs to and has a perfect HEA Highly recommend the audio, too
I have mixed feelings about this one. I loved that it was a different story than what I’ve read — I haven’t read a ton of contemporary romance where the main character gets pregnant. I just didn’t feel much of a connection with the characters. Lizzie and Rake also didn’t have any chemistry, in my opinion.
It wasn’t necessarily a bad book, it just wasn’t a memorable book.

Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake is the second book in Mazey Eddings' adorable A Brush With Love series. These novels are Adult Romances that follow a friendship group of women. I loved getting to know a little bit about Lizzie at the end of A Brush with Love, so I was super excited when I learned she was to have the starring role in this next novel!!!
Lizzie, a professional baker, is known to be the chaotic one in their friendship group. She really tries, but yeah, she messes up sometimes, forgets things, gets distracted, makes reckless decisions, etc. It's just who she is.
Although some people may look at these things as personality quirks, for Lizzie, who lives every day with uncontrolled Adult-ADHD, they are a lot more than that. She struggles to stay on track, with even every day functions oftentimes being difficult for her.
One mistake she doesn't make is getting into a serious relationship. Hook-ups, sure, yes, she loves that one night of intimacy and pushing boundaries. Anything more than that brings complications. No, thank you. That's why when her most recent hook-up with a super charming, sexy Australian man named Rake, turns into a 2-night affair, it really throws her for a loop.
Rake, who was only in the States for a business trip, returned to Australia shortly thereafter. Regardless of the distance, he can't seem to get that charming redhead off his mind. He's given up on relationships though, so just needs to accept it for what it was; two wild nights.
But when Lizzie calls him to tell him she's pregnant, it very suddenly becomes much more than that. What will this non-couple, this long-distance non-couple, do?
I had a ton of fun with this book. The audiobook is delightful, the narration was so engaging. It's wild, charming, funny, OTT and 100% a page-turner. I loved both of these characters so much, as well as getting to watch their relationship evolve. Eddings writes some incredible banter and her characters are always well-developed, often dealing with relatable issues.
Additionally, the steamy scenes are fantastic. And yeah, it's super steamy, so please don't go into this thinking it's rated-PG. It's not, this is R. However, it's not overwhelmingly so. This novel is about the story of the relationship more than the great sex.
I can definitely say after this book that Mazey Eddings is one of my go-to Romance writers. I will pick up anything she writes in the future.
Thank you so much to the publisher, St. Martin's Griffin, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I enjoyed this so much and am looking forward to the next book in the series where Lizzie's friend, Indira, gets her time to shine!!
Lizzie Blake has long resigned to being a screw up. Unable to follow through on her career, find a fulfilling love life, or live up to her family’s expectations, she’s used to being relied upon to be unreliable.
Keeping in line with her no strings attached reputation, she hooks up with the charming Aussie, Rake after he swoops in and saves her from a slime ball’s unwanted advances. Rake is instantly charmed by the Lizzie’s self labeled messiness, but as he’s just passing through, he too is content with a meaningless fling.
Only months later, said fling suddenly has repercussions that leave more than just baked goods in Lizzie’s oven. Dead set on not messing up AGAIN, Lizzie decides to step up and keep the baby. When she reaches out to Rake he, surprisingly, also wants to be involved. Now two strangers whose paths crossed by chance are forever intertwined. But the more they get to know one another the more they realize that some mistakes lead to the best unlaid plans.
Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake is the follow up to A Brush With Love, each book following one of the close friends on their paths to true love. Technically though, this can be read as a standalone. I found Lizzie’s quirkiness was consistently endearing, her circumstances often heartbreaking. The story also touches upon ADHD in adults and its sometimes misconceptions. A romance at heart, admittedly I found the sex scenes in this book didn’t really add any layers to the story. A different reader might relish these parts, but the sweet love story and Lizzie’s growing self acceptance were what really held my interest throughout.
Mazey Edding's writing is hilarious and witty, her characters are strong and relatable. However, I do not think I'm the target audience for this book. It has tropes that just aren't my favorite- unexpected pregnancy and insta-love. Also, I wouldn't say I liked how Rake's ex was villanized for having an abortion because it furthers the narrative that those who have abortions are bad people when it is already so stigmatized. However, I loved Lizzie's character and related to her struggle with ADHD. This book was well-written and funny, but it just wasn't the book for me!
The absolute best depiction of ADHD I’ve ever seen. I just really appreciate the heck out of this book. I adored Lizzie and Rake, together and separately. I saw a lot of myself in Lizzie and actually swooned every time Rake stood up for her. It was so sweet, but still managed to explore the darkness.
