An amazingly fun sequel to A Brush With Love. I liked ABWL, but I loved Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake.
Something about Lizzie's energy was just so infectious and easy to relate to. And Rake!! Ohhhh Rake. 10/10 to him as a book boyfriend.
Mazey Eddings is officially one of my new favorites. Her first book was absolutely delightful with a very sincere focus on issues of anxiety and self-doubt while also showcasing a beautiful mature relationship and even more importantly the importance of girlfriends female friendship. So I was so happy to hear that she was planning on writing a book for each of the friends! And I was blown away by this second book. Lizzie Blake is absolutely delightful and I would love to meet a man like Rake in real life. They are absolutely perfect together! I am a sucker for a pregnancy trope, which I know is not everybody’s favorite and sometimes comes off a little cheesy. However I think Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake did an amazing job with the trope and I loved every second of it!
Thank you #Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A great continuation of Eddings’ friend group series, though more depth of characterization of Rake would allow the reader to bond more.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an advanced copy of Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake.
I found Lizzie Blake to be a refreshing change of pace when it comes to main characters. She has a bit of chaotic energy, feels like she's too much, and like she's struggling in the world — all of which I related to completely. I really liked Rake as well, and really appreciated how thoughtful + caring he was. I definitely found myself smiling as I read.
This was the first book I read by Mazey Eddings, and now I can't wait to read A Brush With Love.
This was such a fun read! It made me laugh, rage, and smile all at the same time.
Lizzie was so relatable. As a fellow adult with ADHD, it was refreshing for me to read about a character who internally and externally struggled with many of the things I find challenging everyday. Thank you Mazey Eddings for representing neurodiversity in an honest and often hilarious way!
Usually the “whoopsies I’m pregnant” trope isn’t my favourite, but it worked well for these characters and didn’t feel recycled or overdone.
Thank you Mazey Eddings, NetGalley, and St. Martin’s Press for providing this ARC!
This was my first time reading a Mazey Eddings novel and I really liked the writing style. Lizzie, the main character had ADHD and it has caused her problems all her life. She has an awkward relationship with her family, she has a hard time keeping a job and has difficulty with daily tasks. She does, however, have a few very close friends who love her. Her friends help her navigate the world and keep her grounded.
Rake, the main male character, is an all business kind of guy. He is very serious and job oriented only in town for a short business trip. He is from Australia so the distance between the two has to be remedied early on in the novel. As the book progresses we find out some of the things that shaped Rake's outlook on life and love. For me he became more likeable as the book went along.
I am not a big fan of insta-love or unexpected pregnancy and this book has both which normally turns me off. But the writing style of Eddings really won me over. I found Lizzie to be very likeable, although often misunderstood. I felt that Rake continued showed growth throughout the book and I really liked the characters together by the end of the novel.
I would recommend this book to anyone that likes rom-com or women's fiction. It was a quick and easy read that kept me engaged.
I really enjoyed this book! This was my first booo by the author, but it won’t be the last. I found her writing style to be very humorous and enjoyable, and the plot (though accidental baby isn’t my favorite trope) was well done! Highly recommend!
I’m not gonna say I hated the book because I didn’t. I didn’t feel like it was super realistic, but it was probably because of the insta love in the beginning. If that’s something you like then you’ll probably really like this book. There’s also one particular part where Rake’s ex was villainized for having an abortion which I really did not like. The author makes a point to say that the characters are both pro choice but this just didn’t sit right with me. I will also say that this book took me an extremely long time to read and it did drag a little bit for me.
I received this as an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review!
This is my first Mazey Eddings book and I’m ashamed to say this. A Brush With Love has been on my list but I just hadn’t gotten my hands on it yet. I say this to let you know, although this is a series of same characters you do NOT need to read them in order to follow which is something I love. Now I can’t wait to push ABWL up higher on my TBR list because let me tell you, I LOVE Mazey’s writing style! Lizzie was a hilarious, vibrant, tell it like it is character and I adored her.
Lizzie is ADHD and has lived life feeling like she was in the way or always the problem. Her family didn’t put in the effort to understand and it left her with a lot of wounds that she tried to heal in the arms of a new man whenever she could. This leads us to Rake. Gorgeous, thoughtful, sensual, Rake. After a two night stand and Rake flying back home to Australia, Lizzie finds herself in a nearby bodega’s bathroom staring at two pink lines on a pregnancy stick. The story goes on with Rake transferring to the US and the two trying to live platonically (ha!) in a new apartment to raise the coming baby together. There are laughs, tears, and MANY steamy moments throughout their journey.
My favorite part was Lizzie realizing her worth and finally standing up for herself. Which was hard to read but I felt it. Least favorite would be the reasoning behind Rake’s previous failed relationship. I found it uncomfortable and unnecessary even though it was clarified reasonings. I get where she was going but it seemed to vilify his ex for her decision and that bothered me.
Overall this book was fun and kept me interested. I can’t wait to read what came before and what’s next from Mazey Eddings!
Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress for the opportunity to read this early digital copy in exchange for my thoughts.
this book was so cute! the mutual respect and softness that rake and lizzie have for each since the beginning is incredible. they are so tender with each other and this book makes me yearn for a love like that.
I went into thinking that it might be a book with instalove but it’s definitely not. they definitely admired each other quickly but it didn’t make the book feel rushed or forced. I absolutely adore how gentle and sweet rake and lizzie are with each other. I loved their chemistry together!
lizzie’s friend group is also pretty incredible. they’re supportive and so understanding but they’re also honest. they overstep at times but honestly what friend group doesn’t at times? there’s nothing better than a story with strong friendships. the only thing I wasn’t the biggest fan of with this book is the surprise pregnancy.
“What I am saying is, just because your brain works differently from neurotypicals, it doesn't mean you deserve to be valued any less. It doesn't mean your love is a burden or a liability.”
thank you to st. martin’s press and netgalley for the arc!
I loved the first book in the series so I was excited to receive this one. I'm not a fan of pregnancy related rom coms so I was a little wary going into it. It was enjoyable but I did not feel a lot of connection between the characters. It didn't have the same magic the first book did.
This was cute. I enjoyed the writing more than A Brush With Love, though it was still quite cheesy. This is the first romance I've read with an accidental pregnancy bringing the main characters together. I didn't particularly like that as a device to bring Lizzie and Rake together.
I appreciated the ADHD representation with Lizzie and enjoyed her relationships with Bernadette, her eventual boss, and Ryan, her brother. Rake didn't standout as a strong character - I didn't feel like I really got to know him.
Like in A Brush With Love, some of my favorite scenes included Harper, Thu, and Indira. I appreciate their strong friendship.
Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake
Ever read a book so relatable that it makes you want to cry?? Because this book is IT.
As someone with ADHD, who didn’t figure out it was ADHD until later in life, I have never felt more seen than I did with Lizzie’s character. From constantly misplacing things, to impulsiveness, to the constant pin balling of tasks, it felt really good to know I am not alone in my struggles and to have that representation.
To have Lizzie be able to actually be seen, and not be viewed as someone who is just lazy or crazy, especially by someone she loves (even if she doesn’t realize it yet) is a huge win for the neurodivergent community. So many of us grew up being degraded because no one, including ourselves, understood our brains and just how hard it was to get a simple task done, so we were told we were too much, to settle down, to stop procrastinating, to stop being how we are wired to be.
“People think ADHD is just code for hyper or distracted, but that’s not it. Not for me, at least. It’s the inability to focus on or follow-through on something that isn’t immediately rewarding. And it applies to so many of life’s basic things. Feeding myself. Completng a task. Total time blindness. Sometimes it feels like my brain straight up riots against any normal executive functioning and makes me feel like I can’t do anything right.Or I act impulsively, or do something destructive and I mess life up for people.”
Also, Mazey Eddings cannot write a bad book, just to get that out of the way. Her character development, the language she uses, the truthfulness of what life looks like for her characters is far beyond the scope of most authors!
I absolutely loved Mazey Eddings’ sophomore novel! In this sequel we a getting Lizzie’s story who we met originally in A Brush With Love. Lizzie is always up for a good time with having a rule of sticking to one-night stands only! However, her world is going to change significantly with the introduction of Rake. Rake is a handsome business man from Australia that Lizzie has a one-night stand with while he is in Philadelphia on a work trip. With an unexpected pregnancy as result of Lizzie and Rake first encounter both of their lives are potentially about to go in a different direction than either one of them had thought. One of the things that I really enjoyed was the handling of Lizzie’s ADHD. I really appreciated how her symptoms were depicted and also showing Lizzie’s struggle with her treatment along with various personal relationships. I found myself laughing and crying constantly throughout my reading experience. I am really anticipating Mazey Eddings’ next novel especially with this group of friends.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press/ St. Martin’s Griffin for sharing this ARC with me in exchange my honest thoughts.
This is a new favorite for me! I loved the characters, the character development, and everything about this book! I read it in less than two days because I just had to know what happened next! I loved the author's writing style and Eddings kept me on the edged of my seat the entire time. Rake and Lizzie are one of my new favorite couples! I want to read this one over and over - I could never tire of this book.
Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake by Mazey Eddings is a fun and delightful novel. Mazey's voice is hilarious and the book delivered so many one-liners that had me laughing out loud! I'm not the biggest fan of the accidental pregnancy trope in general, but this novel made it work. It's still not my favorite trope to read, but I wasn't as bothered by it as I usually am because I really enjoyed Lizzie and Rake as a couple and loved Mazey's writing. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for providing me with an ARC of Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake by Mazey Eddings in exchange for an honest review.
Mazey Eddings is the queen of neurodiversity! Yes, that's an insane statement, but holy books Batman! I was beyond thrilled to snag a copy of Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake. I had been seeing early reviewers sing its praises from the high heavens. And as someone who already devoured A Brush with Love months before its release, I was sitting on pins and needles waiting to read Lizzie Blake.
I feel as though I don't know how to begin by talking about how great this book is. As someone who struggles with a mild form of ADHD, it was really great seeing some of my things displayed in a book. I feel as though Lizzie is one of those characters so many people are going to relate to. Not only because of her neurodivergency, but because of the way she has to deal with the people in her life. Her parents and even her brother to some extent all put this pressure on Lizzie to not be "too much" and the fact of the matter is whether you are neurodivergent or not that is a feeling so many people go through. And Rake's character. There is something about a soft romance book hero that sometimes just makes me swoony. I know people love those hard closed-off types, but sometimes the ones that are struggling with their emotions, but in a non-traditional masculine way are so much better. Guys, Rake cried. In the book. I can't count on one hand the number of times I've seen that happen in a story. I loved so many pieces about this book, but the fact that it is bold and raw makes it so stinking beautiful.
This book is unexpected. From the pregnancy trope to the relationship built between friends, family, and lovers, there are so many reasons why people need to read Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake and I can't wait for it to take the world by storm.
This is such a hard book for me to review. There were SO many things that I loved about this book, but it was not a perfect read for me. To start off with some positives: I absolutely ADORE Mazey Edding's writing style. She has such a knack for writing hilariously quirky little one liners that just absolutely make her books sparkle. I also loved the heck out of Lizzie and Rake as a couple. Fair warning, things between them start off pretty dang insta-lovey. If that isn't your thing, I would maybe steer clear of this one. However, as someone who usually loathes insta-love, I was not at all bothered by it in this case and was genuinely rooting for Lizzie and Rake from page one. One final positive will unfortunately also lead me into a pretty huge negative. If you somehow missed it in the synopsis (which it seems like a lot of early readers have, actually), this book revolves around accidental/unexpected pregnancy. This is another trope that I typical hate, but I found that it worked *so* well in this book, to the point where I think I may actually need to change my stance on how I feel about pregnancy in my romances as a whole. With with that being said....... this book did possibly my least favorite thing a romance revolving pregnancy can do: it villainized an ex-partner for having an abortion. To be fair, the author did make it clear that both she and her characters are pro-choice, but then still chose to portray the ex as a liar and a cheater after disclosing that she had an abortion, which only continues to further the narrative that people who have abortions are """"unsavory"""" or bad. I'm honestly really bummed that the book ended on such a sour note for me because, as you can clearly tell from the first half of this review, there was so, so much that I loved about this book. Unfortunately I just can't pretend that the bit about Rake's ex didn't leave a pretty bad taste in my mouth, especially considering I feel like that whole bit could have been completely left out and the book would have hit pretty much exactly the same notes without it. I do still plan to carry on with this series and read more from Mazey in the future because I do genuinely really love her writing and her characters, but this just wasn't really it for me and I am SAD. Here's hoping that I enjoy the next book in this series more!
CW: unexpected pregnancy, abortion, cheating
Unfortunately this book is my mistake for requesting. I thought I read the back before requesting and did not and unfortunately I’m not interested in an accidental pregnancy book!
Thank you to St. Martin's Griffin for providing a NetGalley ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Pub date: 9/6/22
Genre: romcom
In one sentence: Lizzie and Rake are lovable messes - when Lizzie gets pregnant, will they co-parent or fall in love?
This is a very different book than Eddings' debut, A Brush With Love. The steam factor is a 5/5 throughout, which was a major surprise to this prudish reader. Accidental pregnancy is one of my least favorite tropes, and I didn't love it here either. It was hard to buy Lizzie and Rake's connection at points in the narrative - they just seemed generally horny rather than specifically interested in each other until about 80% of the way through the story. This wasn't the right romcom for me, but I think steam lovers will enjoy it.
