I was pleasently surprised with the preview to Alexis Hall's sequel to Boyfriend Material: Husband Material.. I found the first five chapters very funny, while setting up the plot, though I am still not sure what the point is. Oliver and Luc are supposedly mad in love and happy (while facing still facing some -realistic- challenges), however so far into the preview I haven't found their relationship all that happy or lovey; It has mostly been both Oliver and Luc messing up while the other reluctantly tries or pretends to understand and being inwardly annoyed. Luc's mental narration is a little repetitive and irritating, but i think that has to do more with the character's personality than the writing. I am looking forward to see where the rest of the book goes.
I absolutely loved the preview of the first 5 chapters of Husband Material. Coming back to Luc and Oliver was like visiting old friends- I could still hear their voices in my head and smiled at their quirks, internal monologues, and (my favorite) dry humor. I'm so looking forward to the release of the full book!
Just the first 5 chapters here, but I felt immediately brought back to this universe I enjoy so much, and I'm very much looking forward to the rest!
I think it's only fair to say that Boyfriend Material was one of my favorite books from last year, so Husband Material was probably always gonig to be a slam dunk for me. I love Lucien and Oliver and their messy, chaotic relationship, so getting to dive back into their story was like visiting old friends.
Husband Material fully delivers. We find Luc and Oliver a few years older and while still solidly in that honeymoon/new love phase, they are relaxing into a comfortable life together. Generally speaking, romances are pretty straight forward, which I actually like. We read them, at least I do, because regardless of the shenanigans that occur along the way, that there will be a happy ending. What I love about these books is that the journey to that HEA is a constant rollercoaster, Luc and Oliver (and their family and friends) are allowed to be imperfect in a way that feels realistic - even though we don't all have rock star fathers or unsupportive mothers, even though we haven't all dealt with eating disorders or anxiety, even if the lives Luc and Oliver live are different then out own - there is something universal about their experiences. Something that we can easily relate to that makes us get deeply invested in their story.
Without giving anything away- Hall does something with this book that I love so much. We get the ending that both we as readers and Luc and Oliver deserve. Even if it's not neccesarily the one we thought we wanted. As the story progesses we see them headed towards the alter, trying to work their way through merging their personal aesthetics, what they've envisioned the day to be, and that is messy. If you've ever planned a wedding or even been to one, you know the pressure and stress to make it "perfect" is monumental. Luc and Oliver crash into eachother over and over again trying to define perfect and in the end it wraps up exactly as it should.
I closed the book thinking "Yes. That was perfectly Luc and Oliver. Any other ending wouldn't have worked." I can't wait for everyone else to get their hands on this one!
Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall was one of the better recent LGBTQ fiction novels, straddling the line between YA and Adult readers with something for everyone.
Husband Material - so far - is an equally enthralling follow-up, picking up a couple of years after where the first book left off with the same characters in new situations. Second novels often fall into a trap, trying to outdo the first book and losing what made the characters special. Hall has deftly avoided this trip by keeping the humour flowing, staying true to the characters and putting them in believable - rather than exceptional - circumstances.
If anything, the premise of the first book - a pretend relationship turned real - was more fantastical than its sequel. This is rare, and welcomed.
It looks like fans of the first book are going to love this sequel, and I'm looking very forward to finishing it come August.
I had literally just finished reading Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall, headed on over to Instagram and saw that this preview was available. I literally went from book 1 to a preview to book 2! I NEED to pick this one up as soon as it is released! I devoured this preview!
This preview follows the first five chapters of Husband Material and continues where Boyfriend Material left off.
Luc and Oliver are just sweethearts and they need to be protected!
The humour continued. The witty banter between the two charcters continued. The wacky friends being zany continued. The sweetness continued. The Britishisms continued. I LOVED this little preview - I will need this book injected directly into my veins on the day of release - I cannot wait!
When I saw I could read the first five chapters of Husband Material, I dropped what I was reading and started to read it right away.. I ADORED Boyfriend Material and I am so excited to read Husband Material, which picks up two years after the ending of Boyfriend Material.
Luc and Oliver are still together. Bridget is engaged. Luc's ex-boyfriend, Miles is engaged. EVERYONE around him is getting married. So obviously this starts making him question his own relationship. This is such a Luc thing to do, right?!?
It's been fun to be back with Luc all over again. I LOVE him and Oliver together and can't wait to see what happens in this book. August can't come soon enough!
So, I got to read the first five chapters of Husband Material on NetGalley, which, of course, is not enough to write a very meaningful review. Nevertheless, she persisted.
My first impression of this book is a tentative "I loved it". I had all of the elements required for success: there is the sense that the main characters have grown and matured due to the events of the first book, while still remaining, fundamentally, themselves with their own insecurities and idiosyncrasies. As a romance book, the relationship between Luc and Oliver is central, and the preview introduces hints of conflict that feels true to the previous book without negating its ending. Moreover, the preview sets up what I assume is a main/major conflict in Husband Material really well, as it again follows on from something which have played a huge part in shaping Luc, and which he never got to fully contend with in the first book.
Also, I am just endlessly amused by Alex Twaddle and would happily read an entire book consisting of Luc exasperatedly trying to have a conversation with him.
Great start, can’t wait to see where it goes. Luc continues to be a vibrant, strong narrator and it looks like the evolution of his relationship with Oliver and his friends is going to be fun to read.
Thank you for providing the first five chapters of Husband Material. I loved Boyfriend Material so much and I’m always a little nervous about sequels to romance stories. I’m worried about what the main conflict will be and how it will change the main relationship. I’m hopeful that the relationship will withstand the storm and come out stronger for it. It was a lovely taste of our boys a couple years into their relationship. I cannot wait for this book to come out though because five chapters was not nearly enough.
I cannot wait to read the rest!!! I missed Luc and Oliver and their love story so much. Thanks for the preview NetGalley, can’t wait for the rest of the book.
The first five chapters reassure me that Husband material is going to be an elegant witty follow-up to the first book.
Thank you to NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Casablanca for giving me a copy of this five-chapter preview in exchange for my honest review!
While this preview may only show us Chapters 1–5 of Husband Material, it doesn’t mean I’m any less eager to devour the rest of Alexis Hall’s follow-up to the outrageously witty and heartfelt contemporary romance Boyfriend Material. Just these five chapters are already getting me geared up for the exploration of the next phase in Luc and Oliver’s relationship. Plus, it piles on the droll humor that was a signature of Boyfriend Material, even bringing back the running gag of Alex Twaddle, a dense coworker of Luc’s, being incapable of getting any of the jokes that Luc throws his way. I can’t wait to read the rest of Husband Material!
When I read Boyfriend Material almost two weeks ago for the first time, I fell in love with Luc and Oliver. I couldn't believe that I had waited so long to read such a gem. I was seriously missing out. The first book introduced me to Ollie and Luc and all the other interesting characters such as Bridge, Alex, James Royce-Royce and Priya. There was so much wit, humor and colorful characters that made the story not only hilariously funny but also worthwhile.
So what have my favorites been up to?
The sequel picks up almost two years after the first story took place. Two years since Oliver and Luc have been together. That makes Luc what... 30 now? He is still working at CRAPP with Alex Twaddle, my favorite posh snob, where Luc and his dad jokes turn into sociopolitical debates 🤣. Oh how I missed the CRAPP crew and their dung beetle shenanigans 😂. You are in for a laughter alright.
But somethings have changed. Bridge and Tom are getting hitched and guess who is the maid of honor? Lucien. Haha.
We get a visit from Luc's ex, a blast from the past, making the "new" and mature Luc feel somewhat insecure and unsettled. While, 5 chapters is not much to write a review on, I feel like this book will focus mostly on Luc and Oliver and the issues that can develop from being in a long-term relationship.
Will we see this due tie the knot in this sequel? That remains to be seen but damn I hope so. I would love nothing more than to see Oliver and Luc get married👬.
And while this review focuses on chapters 1-5, Alexis Hall's wit and humor from the first book is still very much strong and evident. Mr. Hall never fails to make his readers laugh and I look forward to it when the book is officially published unless the arc Gods intervene otherwise lmao😂.
I look forward to reading Husband Material whenever that will be.
I just finished the preview of Husband Material and let me tell you, it was absolutely amazing. I was dying for more Luc and Oliver content. And this felt like a glass of water after years of drought.
I loved seeing Luc's friends again and the progess Luc made. It's not so much as to be unrealistic but he is in a much better place than the last book.
This first chapters already prepera a few plotlines that i know are going to be amazing. I was already laughing out loud, giddy and full of dread.
If they break up at any point i'm going to loose it.
Bye now, i'll go re-read Boyfriend Material a dozen times to satisfy my need of Oliver and Luc content while waiting for this book to come out.
I immediately preordered this book after reading the preview. I can't wait to hear more about the shenanigans going on at C.R.A.P.P. - and obviously Luc and Oliver.
Thanks to Sourcebooks Casablanca for sending a preview of this book to me.
This book starts with Luc and Oliver attending a non-gender-specific bird do (Bridge's hen do) which I know nothing about and even after reading this preview still have no idea what it actually about expect that it is vagina theme or something like that. Honestly, I did not enjoy this preview, the conversations felt a tad bit too long, the characters felt a bit too much and I continued to forget who was who. The characters I was interested in (Luc and Oliver) who by the way are still so very sweet and adorable, get a bit backburned in this preview and I almost forgot that they were the main characters.
Considering that I was only able to read chapter 1-5, I cannot totally say I was confused or that I didn't enjoy it because I can tell it was going somewhere but I was turned off by the first chapter, which is really bad. There were so many non-dictionary words that were similar to twitter lingo and nuanced lingo that I just could not keep up and that is not to say I didn't understand them, it was just too much in every paragraph or dialogue.
I will however be reading the whole book once it is out because I really love Luc and Oliver but the cast was quite confusing and a bit more description would be great
Having been a huge fan of Boyfriend Material, I became immediately excited upon hearing about the sequel, Husband Material. This preview of the first few chapters gives us a taste of what we’re getting and it’s made me even more thrilled for the release of the full book. All of the humor, charm, wit, and heart of the first book are present in this snippet of the sequel and I can’t wait to see what else is in store!
Argh I absolutely NEED to read the whole book! So unbelievably excited for this to come out! Or for the publisher to grant my advanced copy wish ;)
I thoroughly enjoyed these first few chapters and I can't wait to get the rest of the book once it's published!
