I really enjoyed Boyfriend Material and was looking forward to Husband Material. Unfortunately I didn't find it as enjoyable; not a bad read but not as good.
I read the first five preview chapters and bought the book. I absolutely loved Boyfriend Material. The first book had such witty banter, a solid plot, and made you absolutely fall in love with the characters. You could really hear each character and feel as if you were in the room with them. I was looking forward to the sequel. But I have to be completely honest. Husband Material felt starkly different. Our two mains were barely on the same page together, literally and figuratively. They had the same argument over and over. The inspiration from Four Weddings and A Funeral was taken a bit far to where I felt like the plot was lost. I found the ending disappointing and not true to the characters I came to know in book 1. While I laughed my way through Boyfriend Material, I ended up throwing Husband Material across the room at least twice because I was so annoyed. I'm not sure if the author believes that once the "honey moon" stage is over a relationship turns into horrible bickering and miserable people. I for one cannot stand it.
Amazing as always from Alexis Hall. This is one of my fave series ever. Definitely a worthy follow up to the first book!!
I love any book by Alexis Hall. I need to read all of them. I thankfully got the ARC for this book so I could finish reading it after this preview. Thank you so much!
I was sent a preview for this book, and unfortunately it seems that the narrator's quirks worsen in this book. I was excited to find Oliver again, but not to read him getting strung along by Luc further.
A stellar sequel that sadly couldn’t grip me the way book 1 did. I felt a lot of the character growth in book 2 was discarded to make this happen, but all in all it was still lovely to see these two characters find the happy ending they deserved on their own terms.
I’ve been a fan of Alexis Hall for years and I cannot wait to get my hands on the finished book, it’s in my wishlist since it got published, I’m gonna buy it soon I hope!
I had a chance to read this preview and enjoyed it. Having read the prior book I wasn’t sure what to expect. I have since purchased the full version and plan to read it thanks to this preview.
this preview made me so excited for the whole book! i can’t wait for it, it seems so fun and i loved the first book
Haven’t read husband material yet, but this got me hooked on the story. Can’t wait to read the whole book!
Let me start off by saying that I absolutely adored the first book. I was eagerly awaiting the chance to hop right back into their wit and snark. Unfortunately, I felt like I hopped into a whole different dynamic. Something was lost. It didn't feel like the first book and I struggled to get into it. I wanted to love it. I've tried a couple of times to just push past the first few chapters but ultimately decided to just admit the sequel wasn't a match made for me and move on. I purchased "A Lady for a Duke". to check out next though!
2.75 stars
Hadn’t read previous book in years. But this is one small catastrophe after another, one fight after another, and it’s always stressed that Oliver and Luc are but aren’t on the edge of breaking up.
Luc’s narration of everything is also pretty stressful.
0/5 on steam.
Ugh I wanted to like this so much. I loved Boyfriend Material and I was looking forward to this since it was announced but I came away from it kind of …. wanting them to not be together?
I‘ve talked a lot of peoples ears off about this, but the author almost seems to be busting at the seems to transition into the general fiction rather than romance or rom com. Like I think the books asks so many imporant, interesting questions: how is queerness worn by different people? is there a wrong way? should queer people value heteronormative institutions like marriage just because we have fought so long to obtain it, or should we reject it entirely?
GREAT questions. Now….what happens when the main characters disagree about all of the answers to those and have the same fight over and over throughout the entire book? /: making up abruptly at the end even though it doesn’t….make sense.
Again, I feel like so many interesting themes were explored which were difficult and sometimes don’t coincide with romances idea of a happy ending? And instead of following through with that vibe, they randomly make up with mere pages to spare…
Alexis did say Father Material (book 3) would be less angsty so I will absolutely be giving that a stab when it comes out.
Dare I say this series is the perfect romance? Luc and Oliver have the dynamic we all dream of. I was obsessed with "Boyfriend Material" and truly couldn't wait for the sequel. It's clear that this follow-up has all the magic of the first. I Can't wait to see how the story continues to unfold.
As this was a preview and I haven't yet finished the book, I will update my reviews everywhere once I do. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for offering a free preview of the sequel to Boyfriend Material. I highly recommend this book and series to any romance readers, but especially those who enjoy M/M romance and fun romance tropes.
Everyone is at a crossroads in their lives and feeling the pressure of societal norms and fitting into them. Marriage, kids, houses. Sometimes the choices others make aren't right for you. Will relationships make it through the pressures put on them and figure out what is best for them and not only what is expected of them.
Thankful to have gotten this preview for a sneak peek into the world of husband material! I ended up reading the full book shortly after it came out, and I initially was a little disappointed with the ending, but it has grown on me as it has marinated!
This was a perfect glimpse into the book! Such a tease only having 5 chapters, but I was hooked after the 5th! Thank you for this quick little freebie/snippet for readers to enjoy!
This is a very enjoyable start to the book. This preview made me very excited to read the full book.
I'm disappointed in the sequel of boyfriend material and feel like it wasn't necessary. I've seen the author mention a few times it was never the plan to write a sequel, so it felt as though the book was rushed and forced to happen. The writing style and quality was great but the plot was odd and actually had me rooting for a breakup, which I've never done for the main love interests before!
