What happens when the man IN your dreams turns out to be real?
In Dream On, author Angie Hockman explores the idea of whether fantasy can live up to reality in this romance with a twist. Cassidy Walker slowly wakes up from yet another delicious dream featuring her perfect boyfriend, Devin Bloom. So, she’s shocked to learn that she’s in the hospital after a 6-day coma and that Devin doesn’t exist. Despite the detailed conversations and clear vision she has of him (which she fills up a sketchbook with during her year-long recovery), she finally acknowledges the truth and turns her focus to resuming her fledgling law career. However, fate has other plans when she runs into Devin in the flesh at his brother Perry’s florist shop, and he doesn’t recognize her.
Intrigued, he agrees to help her solve the mystery despite Perry’s suspicion of her motives. As they spend more time together, she begins to wonder if the memories are a sign they were meant to meet, if fate brought them together, or if dreams should be left in the realm of fantasy. With the thoughtful and sensitive observations Perry shares with her, she also begins to question if a career in a high-powered law firm will bring her fulfillment and the life she wants.
Although this is a slow-burn, only slightly steamy romance, it also deals with traumatic brain injury, parental interference, sibling rivalry, and betrayal. In a departure from the normal trope, Hockman also ingeniously uses government corruption and the evils of capitalism as vehicles to drive the plot. Add in a twist that observant readers will pick up on early in the books, and you have a delightful summer read which will appeal to fans of Kate Clayborn, Christina Lauren, and Abby Jimenez. Highly recommended.
I received a complimentary ARC of this book from Gallery Books through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
This book was so fun. Everytim I thought it was a predictable romance, it took a turn that threw me off. In the best ways. I've seen some mixed reviews, but in my opinion, this is worth picking up. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
this was such a cute, whimsical read about finding a second chance at a life worth living to the fullest.
when cass wakes up from a coma after a car accident, she has a distinctive memory of a boyfriend that no one else believes exists, despite her descriptive explanation and details. after time spent recovering from her accident, and having to store the memory of her boyfriend away due to an inability to prove his existence, she tries to restart her life. it’s at that time that she encounters her “dream” boyfriend, devin.
i enjoyed how cass was written and that her injury didn’t fall to the wayside as she struggled to return to normal. it could have been easy to just drop side effects when deemed necessary, but they’re prominent throughout the story. when cass finds devin, she embarks on a journey to figure out why and how she knows so much about a practical stranger, since devin has no recollection of her at all. in that time, she grows close to devin’s brother, perry. while this isn’t exactly a love triangle, it does present elements of one. there are other secrets and surprises that are dropped along the way, and the revelation of how cass seems to know so much about devin is a little cheesy, but i loved it nonetheless.
ugh, I honestly couldn't get on board or enjoy reading about the main email character. She just annoyed the crap out of me so I basically skimmed through the majority of this book.
I was so excited to read Dream on because I absolutely loved shipped. Dream on started off very strong with such a unique plot. I was super intrigued and into the book until the twist that came at the midpoint. I felt like it was unprompted and to be honest made me enjoy the book less. Still dream on was such a fun read and a great summer book :) such a pleasure to get to read the ARC of it!
I read Ms. Hockman’s debut novel, Shipped, which I loved so I was excited to see this new work. I loved the premise of this story although it started with Cass waking up from a coma after being in an auto accident, believing that she has a wonderful boyfriend. To believe something that no one else does, would make anyone question reality.
It was somewhat of a coincidence when Cass met the real Devin and also his brother Perry, at Perry’s flower shop. The flower shop became such a huge part of this story. I loved the storyline, the misconceptions, various relationships and several surprises. The story was sweet, romantic, funny, with several unexpected details, twists and turns.
I don’t want to give away certain aspects of the story, but it was such a fun read with an amazing HEA and I highly recommend this story.
Thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this new work. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Hockman’s work.
Shipped was one of my favorite romances of 2021, so I was so excited to reach Hockman's sophomore novel. Unfortunately, Dream On wasn't a hit for me.
The story follows Cass, a woman who, following a car accident, wakes up from a coma only to find that the boyfriend that she vividly remembers doesn't actually exist. When she runs into him in a flower shop, it seems like it might be fate.
I ended up listening to this on audio, and enjoyed the narration, and I absolutely adore the way that Hockman writes. I thought the premise was fantastic, though (minor spoilers) the storyline hinges on a love triangle with two brothers, a trope that I don't think I'm a big fan of as a reader.
I struggled with some of the pacing of this book, I think because I had a preference with the love triangle, and I think that Cass (and Hockman) had one from the beginning as well. Rather than amping up the tension, her interactions with one of the brothers felt forced and impacted my view of Cass. There are also some big professional/ethical grey areas here that made me incredibly uncomfortable as a reader.
In addition, I know that authors of romance are often put in positions where they feel like they have to include open door scenes, but this book is incredibly chaste until the epilogue, where there's a pretty spicy scene, and it just felt so out of place and jarring given the rest of the book.
This wasn't a win for me, but I will continue to pick up Hockman's books in the future because I think that this might have been a combination sophomore slump and personal preference as a reader issue.
I'd recommend this one to readers who enjoy love triangles and stories about fate vs. free will.
I've read 64 romance novels this year and this is by far the most unique! I loved the premise and the storytelling was top notch.
After a car accident, Cass wakes up from a coma asking for her boyfriend Devin. The only problem is he doesn't exist. Yet she has lots of memories of their relationship. Her neurologists say her brain created the false memories, and there's even a journal article written about her. Almost a year later, she's returning to her regular life when she stumbles upon Devin, the exact man from her memories.
Compelling right?! I was sucked into the story from start to finish. Most of the time with romances, I can guess where things are headed (and I don't mind that) but here I wasn't sure and I loved it. All the side characters are wonderful and add to the story. I want books following them too!
This was a funny, touching read. While it's definitely about finding love, it's also about figuring out how to be true to yourself while facing others' expectations, which is very relatable.
I highly recommend this one for romance readers!
I thought the idea of this book was so unique and I was drawn into the story from the first page. It is a sweet romance with a little steam and a swoony hero. It has enough depth to keep it interesting but it's not too heavy making it the perfect rom com. I really enjoyed Shipped but I think this book is even better. The setting was comforting as I am familiar with Northeast Ohio so all the references were fun. The Browns winning the super bowl comment made me laugh out loud. A must read for everyone especially lovers of rom coms.
A huge thank you to NetGalley for the free ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Fate, chance, choice…it’s hard to distinguish in this story. Cass wakes up from a coma remembering a boyfriend that never existed. However, he is a real person and things get crazy once they meet each other and the attractions is mutual. I wish Cass had come to some conclusions a little sooner, but I won’t say more in order to keep this spoiler-free. I had a hard time with one of the side characters and their situation. It was a lot to take in and I felt like it could have used more pages to not just gloss over a heavy topic. I can't decide how I feel about the romance aspect of this story because there’s one I wanted more of and another that was pretty fun to explore until it wasn’t. I will say that I think the cover is perfect and I love that it reflects a really sweet moment in the story.
Cass wakes up from a coma and is flooded with memories of her boyfriend Devin... until she realizes he doesn't exist. A year later she stops at a florist shop and runs into Devin in real life, and tries to piece together if he's really the man of her dreams.
After loving Shipped last year, I was excited for Hockman's sophomore romcom. I didn't love this quite as much, but enjoyed Cass' journey as she figures out what she wants from her career and her love life. I don't want to give too much away, but I wish we got a little bit more of the romance sooner because the moments we got were so endearing. It's a fun journey overall with a unique premise, and while it had some elements I don't traditionally like in my romance, it worked for this story.
I'm looking forward to reading more from Hockman — thank you Gallery Books for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book was such an interesting premise! I mean, could you imagine waking up from a coma thinking you had a boyfriend of three months, finding out he was a figment of your imagination, and then to find out he is indeed real but has no idea who you are? That description immediately peaked my interest in this book!
I really enjoyed the wholesomeness of this book. I did predict 75% of the ending; however, one thing did surprise me. However, I feel like most romance books are predictable in a sense, so I wouldn’t let that be the reason you don’t read this book.
Also, I do feel like the epilogue was good except on part that felt pushed and just not needed to be there. This was a closed door romance novel, but in the epilogue it felt like a fade to black spice scene was thrown in just to be there.
Overall, very cute!
I special thanks to NetGalley and Gallery Books for providing me with an eARC in exchange for my honest thoughts!
#DreamOn:
“It’s way past time I stop dreaming of relationships and romance and focus on the one thing I can control: my choices.”
As I was writing my review, the entire thing deleted so, we’re gonna make this short and sweet. The beginning hooked me in, the middle was not it, the ending was good, but didn’t redeem the middle. I really enjoyed Shipped last year, so Dream On was a bit of a disappointment.
I listened to Dream On thanks to @simon.audio and I honestly feel like I would have DNF if it wasn’t for the audio. Lindsey Dorcus was a wonderful reader and kept me entertained enough to see what was going to happen. I figured what was going to happen did happen, and while most characters were not my favorite, (Felt like Brie and Perry were just too good to be with this crew) I hung in there.
Overall, it was okay. The beginning definitely sucked me in, but the middle of the story just lost me in interest. I do love a HEA, so I’m glad we got that for sure. Thank you @simon.audio and @gallerybooks for the gifted copy. Dream On is out now.
TW/CW: I do feel like those that read this need to know there are two separate “fake pregnancy” and miscarriage discussions in the book. (Not a spoiler as it does not involve our MC) Please practice self care if the above does affect you. ❤️
QOTD: I’ve had a day of days. Tell me something good!
A dream is a wish your heart makes, when it's fast asleep. In Angie Hockman's Dream On, Cass Walker is living that very lyric. After waking up from a coma and believing she was in a committed relationship to the man of her dreams, she quickly finds out it was just a weird dream brought on by her injuries. To make her life a little more crazy, she actually meets her "dream guy" in person after leaving the hospital and decides to begin an actual relationship with him in the hopes of rekindling some of the romance she had in her mind.
Angie Hockman's story is full of fun and multi-dimensional characters and an enjoyable story that will keep the audience wanting more up until the very last page. What happens when the man of your literal dreams, is a bit more complicated than you first imagined?
Thank you Angie, NetGalley, and Gallery Books for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
I really enjoyed this book! It definitely didn't end how I thought it was going to. But, I loved where the plot went. Can you imagine being in a coma, dreaming of a man you swear is your boyfriend, but isn't? Then you see him in a flower shop and he's actually real? It was a mixture of mystery, true love, and finding your self worth to be happy. Makes you believe that maybe some things are fated and beyond what we can ever dream of, literally. Definitely a book I would recommend.
After devouring Shipped in one day, I was beyond excited to see another book coming from Angie Hockman. I knew after reading Shipped she would more than likely become an auto-buy author for me, but after finishing Dream On, I know for sure she will be.
Dream On follows Cass, a twenty-six-year lawyer. The book starts with her waking from a coma after a car accident with memories of a boyfriend named Devin Bloom. Nearly a year after she wakes, she moves in with her best friend and starts a job as a summer associate at a top law firm. One day, she stumbles into a local flower shop only to see the man she had dreamt of in her coma.
I won't say more, because of spoilers, but the title has many meanings - not only from what she saw in her dream. This was such a beautiful story and I will recommend it to everyone.
4.5/5 stars
Thank you Gallery Books and NetGalley for the gifted eARC!
In her latest novel, Dream On, Angie Hickman tells the story of Cass, a woman who wakes up from a coma with memories of a boyfriend who doesn’t exist. Just when she’s gotten over her “imaginary” boyfriend and moved on with her life, Cass comes across a man who, not only looks like the man from her coma, but has the same name as her imagined boyfriend, Devin. I loved the creative concept of this story. It was a unique and fun read that I enjoyed. The trope used is one that can be hard to pull off, but I think Hockman did a good job at this tricky trope. There is one steamy scene in the epilogue, but it’s skippable, though the book does have a fair amount of innuendo and language. Overall, this was a fun read and I look forward to more by Hockman in the future.
*Thank you to Angie Hockman, Gallery Books, and Netgalley for an e-arc of this book. All opinions are my own.
The idea of this book was so fun, but something about it just didn't work for me. I didn't think the chemistry between the romantic leads was there and some of the secondary characters were unfortunately under developed. I was just expecting more from this book and it didn't really deliver.
What would you do if you woke up from a coma with memories of a hot stranger as your significant other? Angie Hockman provokes this question in her latest novel, Dream On.
Cass Walker wakes up from a coma with a few clear memories of a handsome man named Devin.... who no one else knows her ever being with. Flash forward a year, Cass is starting a law internship and living with her best friend. After the first day of work, she decides to venture to a local flower shop and treat herself. And treat herself she does, to Devin who looks exactly like what she imagined. Cass is set in her mind that this is fate talking and convinces D to go out with her to discover their connection. But is he better as just a figment of her imagination?
I enjoyed reading Hockman's sophomore novel as a local Clevelander. It was fun connecting with the author about local places and discovering her inspiration! Dream On is a fun novel about putting yourself and your inspirations first. There was a section involving miscarriage that was mishandled and did not need to be placed how it was. I wish that area was given either more importance or that Hockman would have ventured into a different plot point. I would still recommend reading this and then picking yourself some flowers!
While the blurb is mysteriously intriguing, it also leaves out the MAJOR element of the storyline that's sure to be polarizing (SPOILER) - that this involves a love triangle between two brothers. It's a trope that readers typically feel strongly about, one way or another... and I probably would've skipped this book entirely had I known it was included ahead of time. I loved the charming and tropical Shipped, so I was excited to dive into Hockman's sophomore novel. And this DOES have an enjoyable writing style and many things that I liked. I loved that the storyline was so unpredictable, and I can honestly say that I've never read a plot similar to this one. But over half of the book is focused on the wrong guy, so our couple's relationship felt extremely underdeveloped and a little cringey. I actually really liked the cinnamon roll hero, but there were a lot of things standing in the way of me enjoying the romance.
The story follows Cass, a woman who awoke from a coma believing that she was in a relationship with a man named Devin Bloom. Cass even sketched what her boyfriend looked like, but no one in her life believes that the man exists. So when Cass runs into real-life Devin in a flower shop, she's not sure what to think. He looks just like the man in her dreams, but he also thinks she's a stranger. As they try to figure out what made Cass believe Devin was her boyfriend, the two start getting to know each other for real. But Devin's brother (Perry) is skeptical of the situation, and he keeps getting in the way.
I loved that the storyline was so unique, and it was definitely an interesting reading experience to be so unsure of how things would play out. It didn't take long for me to figure out which guy I wanted Cass to end up with though, which made watching her waste SO MUCH time on the wrong guy very frustrating. She's sexually attracted to both brothers, so I was uncomfortable several times along the way. No matter who she ended up with, things would've been pretty awkward, let's just say that. Having the two leads be brothers just made it extra disconcerting. However, I did like the overall plot, and I think there's definitely an audience for it. If you're a fan of love triangles, low heat romance, and mysterious storylines, then chances are that you'll enjoy this. I wanted to like it more than I did, but a few things needed to change for that to happen.
