The usual twisty and turny thriller from Mark Edwards. Gripping read and quite spooky in places, one you will want to keep reading until the very end as it's very pacey.
Wow........ what a thrilling roller coaster of a read I enjoyed the twists and turns and the edge of your seat moments this was a fantastic thriller
Two years prior, Scarlett, a fifteen-year-old girl, mysteriously disappeared whilst visiting her brother Aidan in Seattle. Despite years of fruitless searches and dead-end leads, Aidan's hope of finding her has dwindled. However, a glimmer of possibility emerges when a woman spots a girl running for her life in a Northern California forest clearing and is convinced it's Scarlett. The question looms: could it truly be her?
Determined to uncover the truth, Aidan heads south and encounters a fire-ravaged town adorned with missing-teenager posters. The atmosphere is tense, the locals are fearful, and the sheriff remains tight-lipped. It seems like yet another roadblock until a chance meeting with Lana, a returned local, provides Aidan with his first promising lead. As they piece together Scarlett's disappearance, Aidan and Lana inadvertently make dangerous enemies.
The author employs a swift narrative style, painting a vivid picture of the unfolding events that initially captivated my interest. However, the momentum seemed to taper off, lacking the saving grace of robust character development or vivid descriptive prowess. Edwards strategically introduces drama at crucial junctures, maintaining a decent pace for the novel. Yet, the spine-tingling thrills characteristic of his other works appeared to be missing in this instance. While an entertaining read, it didn't quite reach the high standard set by many of his other books, in my opinion.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for sending a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A classic Mark Edwards thriller, this kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing right until the very end. I love the way Mark writes and his ideas are always so original!
A good page turner and I enjoyed the mystery of where Scarlett had gone. Interesting premise with the plot too. Good characters and tension.
I really enjoy reading Marks books, theres something about the way he captures you from the very first chapter and this is yet another brilliant read. I found myself totally engrossed in it, picking it up to read whenever I had a spare moment. Thrilling, and terrifying in equal neasure and pace that holds you to the very end!
Scarlett is visiting her brother Aidan who works in Seattle and then simply disappeared overnight. An elderly lady spotted a young girl being chased as she’s looking out of the window who matches Scarlett’s description. Aidan sets off on her trail and joins forces with Lana who’s brother is also missing. I normally enjoy books by this author but not this one (apart from the start). Too Americanised and you’d be mistaken for thinking that Scarlett was a US resident, an all American kid when she’s meant to be English. She was irritating and full of self importance that I gladly skimmed the parts she was present. I did the same too when the author started going on (and on) about climate change etc. If I wanted to read about that then I’d choose non fiction. Sadly it seems that you can very rarely be just entertained anymore, there has to be another slant or message and it’s getting very boring now! I much prefer the author’s psychological books set in the UK.
Aidan and Lana are each looking for a missing sibling, in a town that doesn't want to give up it's secrets. It starts a little slow but picks up the pace in the second half. It's a good book, but a little different from the author's usual books and not my favorite of his. I strongly encourage you to check out his backlist.
This was a good read but not my favourite from Mark Edwards. Thoroughly enjoyed his previous books but this one was just a bit chaotic in places and I couldn't always connect with the characters. Such a shame.
Definitely worth a read though.
Thank you Netgalley.
No Place to Run is a standalone novel written by Mark Edwards. It was originally published on June 21st, 2022 by Thomas and Mercer. I was able to read this book by obtaining an ebook ARC by the publisher on NetGalley.
A woman is traveling by train back home, when suddenly, in the middle of the night, she sees a young woman who seems to be running for her life, with a man chasing behind her. She is convinced that the young woman is Scarlett, a girl who has been missing from Seattle for about two years. She visits the website Scarlett’s brother created to see her picture, and is more convinced than ever. She sends him a message through the website to let her know what she saw, and it sparks Aidan into driving to the area to try and find his younger sister.
While searching for his sister in a nearby town, Aidan meets Lana, a returning local who is also looking for a missing family member, her younger brother. However, the town police tells Aidan that her brother died in a wildfire, but Lana says she doesn’t believe and the corrupt town is covering up his disappearance. Working together, they get into some scary and dangerous situations, and have to race against the clock to see if they can find their lost siblings.
I had not read any Mark Edwards novels yet, but I had heard of him through the grapevine. I was disappointed with this story however. It was very captivating at the beginning, but fell about halfway through. One of the characters, Shannon, was very interesting to learn about and I wish the book had dedicated more time to her and her backstory. It also ended somewhat abruptly and rushed, and there is still some more information about the characters that I had wished to learn more about.
I give this book 3/5 stars. I am still going to give Mark Edwards another try, but I hope that it is more developed.
That didn’t appeal much to me. Such a letdown.
Thanks to Netgalley! Hoping for a better read next time!
Mark Edwards is one of my favourite authors so I was really excited to read his latest book.
I loved it! A fast paced story with great characters and lots of twists. Highly recommended!
No Place To Run is a gripping, intense and fast paced thriller by the incredible Mark Edwards. Having read & loved The Hollows, I knew I had to sign up for this readalong and to say I was excited when I was accepted onto it is an understatement!! 🥹
This book surprised me massively, I did NOT see this book taking the turn that it did but my god I loved it! Safe to say I consider it DARK, like this is a super interesting take extreme it’s behaviour & how people’s beliefs shape behaviour… (the psychologist in me is very satisfied🤭)
The amount of twists this book threw at me.. I was not ready!! Mark’s writing is so bingeable as it is, but to get a plot twist and then you are suckered because any theory you had, he will make sure you aren’t right! He is amazing at delivering a thriller with an ending you don’t see coming 👀
Cannot recommend his work enough, this book is his latest (just released!!) so I highly recommend you support him! No Place to Run is available to over and buy now and for any kindle unlimited readers it is also there, so go download while you can! 🌲
I am a massive fan of this author and this did not disappoint at all. The author has a talent for providing an intriguing and multilayered plot which keeps you engaged throughout, which was exactly the case here. I loved the premise of this and thought the ending was unexpected and chilling.
3 for neutral, was unable to access my netgalley account for months, until today. Because of this, I was unable to see which books I needed to read. I apologize for the inconvenience and hopefully will not have any more issues in future.
A creepy unsettling book that is strangely not that farfetched. Found it hard to get into but once I did, I couldn't put it down. Edge of the seat stuff for the last third of the book. It was a little bit different I thought from all of the author's previous books but really enjoyable as always.
Kindly received a copy of this book from NetGalley for a fair and honest review.

Over all I very much enjoyed the premise of this book. I enjoyed the discussion surrounding climate change, and the family members looking for their missing kin. The first half of the book was a bit of a slow burn - which I actually didn't mind. The second half was jam packed with action, much of which I felt was unbelievable. Overall, I really enjoyed it and will definitely read what the author comes out with next.
This wasn't my favourite Mark Edwards book, but it wasn't bad. It was a relatively original story and I could see this being turned into a film or short series.
It had a few nice twists and turns. I think more could have been made of Francesca and her carer, maybe a spin-off??
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. A great author and this is another good read. Good characters and great writing, with plenty of creepiness and suspense! A great read!
Mark Edwards does not disappoint with No Place to Run, I do however prefer some of his earlier works.
Strong characters make this a compelling read, you become really invested in their lives and you don't want to put the book down because you can't bear to miss out on what's coming next
