I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Crystal Tear introduces you to Fada, a twenty-year-old girl who is finding out she isn't exactly who she thought she was. Brought to a new world, Hagelaz, she quickly learns that the people are torn between a brother and sister. These two have been fighting for around 20 years... which doesn't seem suspicious one bit. Right?
Fada was an interesting character but honestly hard to follow at times. For most of the book, I just wasn't sure how I truly felt about her. I think when Angel was around things seemed to be better, but those moments were short lived. Out of the two, I really liked Angel way more. As for the brother and sister, I was not a fan of Netis. He seemed to be a very controlling person and it just rubbed me the wrong way.
Overall, this book had its ups and downs. The ending was slightly surprising, and Angel deserves the world and so much more.
Crystal Tear was a good read. The cursed magical world the author created was interesting and unique. Fada the main character I didn't really like. It was hard to understand why she made some of her decisions. I would have liked a little more background on her but if there's another book coming then I'm assuming more will be revealed then. But other than that I enjoyed the book. The pace is good and there's plenty of adventure and romance!
I’m sorry, this was one I really did not enjoy. I tried my best to related and connect to the characters, especially the MC, but often found it shallow and lacking in character development.
Thank you Cranthorpe Millner and Netgalley for giving me the chance to read this book.
After reading I find I have a hard time rating it.
I liked the general idea of the story and it certainly has potential. But in my opinion it didn't live up.
Fada finds out she doesn't belong on earth but in another realm. So far so good. But then it feels we only get part of the story.
She and mostly the people of Hagelaz are victim of a brother (King) and a sister (Queen) who are already fighting for 20yrs over who gets to 'have' Fada. It splits the people and country into two camps.
At moments I had a hard time following Fada her choices and decisions. Even for a 20yr old I had expected her to be a bit wiser? And some of the world building felt off. For example how far were these 'enemy' castles apart? It felt like just a walk away.
I won't delve further in the story or characters to avoid spoilers. But the thing that bothered me most was the ending. I have no clue what happened there. Literally..
It left me feeling very confused.
So, 2,5 stars for me.
Thank you NetGalley for the early copy to review.
The story starts off with Fada who’s not like normal girls because she likes to read and visit art galleries. One day she meets Angel who tells her she not from this world and she’s really some sort of princess from another world.
I didn’t enjoy this book and I was so close to not finishing it all together.
Honestly? I have mixed feelings about this book. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad read, it's interesting, different. I like author's writing style, I'm just not targeted reader I think.
I rarely don't finish a book. I know all too well that some books get better, that the ending can make the entire book. However, I've also learned that forcing myself through a book that's not a good fit will only make me dislike a book more. I hate to not finish review copies from Netgalley, since I'm really thankful authors and publishers grant me review copies. But I would hate it even more if my emotions would fully cloud my review.
In this case the book and I really weren't a good fit. I was intrigued by the plot, I loved the cover, but I got an entirely different story from what I expected. And the story I got was not the kind of story I wanted to read. I was about 40% in and nothing in the story really spoke to me and I got the feeling, after reading a certain scene, that I might end up screaming at the book at some point, which made me decide that it was probably better to just read the epilogue and let the book go.
It pains me to do that, but the longer I think about it, the more I think it was the right choice. I read to make friends and to fall in love, but the writing style made it hard for me to really connect with the characters, to feel for them and to care about them. The writing style seemed a little distant. The emotions our heroine felt were described, but I never felt them. I think the writing style was in general like that. It was a lot of telling, but not much showing.
Even though I already read 40% of the book I had no idea what kind of fantasy world this was set in. We saw a few rooms in a few castles, we heard there were heavy snowstorms at night and that it was cold, but that was it. The part of the world we got to know so far was incredibly small and although it's clear that politically there's a lot going on, we haven't seen much of it. We just heard the stories in long info-dumps.
I'm sure there are people who will enjoy this book since I have an issue with epic fantasy in general, I also never finished Lord of the Rings so this book is in good company. I always say: There is a book for everyone and there is someone for every book.
This book was just not for me. I didn't like the way it was written. Especially when the beginning was the same thing repeated over and over just phrased differently each time. I honestly DNF'd it before making it even halfway. Sometimes I consider picking up a DNF again another time, but I can't say this is one of them. I just can't see myself enjoying it now or in the future. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for providing me with an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
