I have students requesting manga everyday. I might be biased because Beauty and the beast is my favorite.but I loved this story. I loved reading the Beast’s perspective. I hope this is just the beginning for Disney Manga.
I'll copy most of my review of Belle’s story because I had the same issues with Beast’s story.
Beauty and the Beast was my favorite cartoon when I was little, I even remember watching it on a video player and cherishing my videotape. Today I still enjoy reading Beauty and the Beast retellings (and I always will) so I was very excited when I saw this manga on Netgalley.
To be honest, after reading it I must admit that I'm beyond disappointed.
My biggest problem is that this is described as manga. Why you ask? Well, manga is read from right to left, and this felt more like a graphic novel. Not because it was colored but because of the panel positions (it made more sense reading them from left to right).
Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, and Chip were some of my favorite characters and their drawings here looked kind of cursed. They felt flat and emotionless, I didn't like that.
Illustrations of Belle’s and Beast’s faces also felt weird in some panels, like they was frozen or something. This manga feels more like an unfinished project than a final product.
I read in the description that this manga was originally published in 2017, no offense to the author but they could have improved this manga before releasing it again in the colored edition.
As for the story, you could see some parts were rushed and cut off but that didn't bother me that much since I already know what happens. Still, it would be nice to improve it.
I'm truly sorry if my review seems a bit harsh but these are some aspects that shouldn't be ignored.
All in all, I didn't enjoy reading this manga and probably wouldn't recommend it to my friends or followers.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
The art in this book was awesome. This is a great book even if you are not familiar with the story. Great for all ages. Loved the new-ish perspective from the beast. Getting to know his thoughts and feelings was a nice change from previous versions I have seen and read. Would definitely recommend this book and can’t wait to read the other part of this collection from Belle’s side. Would of loved a bit longer book with a bit more details, was definitely sorry when it ended. Will look for other books by this author in the future.
So i have read Belle's take but this was really better and I love the colour and art style, story is like same as beauty and beast 2017 movie. I really liked Beast's pov and it's was really great, the details and other thing was great. Belle's tale have lighter shade colour in manga and beast's tale have darker colour and it's really amazing. This was like watching movies in book.
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for sending me this E-Arc
Thank you to Tokyopop, Disney Manga, and Mallory Reaves for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a two-book companion set of which this volume tells the tale of Beauty and the Beast more from Beast's perspective, while the alternate is from Belle's perspective.
The art is luscious and beautifully colored. This full-color edition is more based on the live-action Disney film, but definitely falls under anime style.
I enjoyed this version. It was easy to read, beautifully illustrated, and while there is quite a bit of overlap with its counterpart manga, it is still very flavorful and the internal thoughts of the title character tend to share some good words of wisdom and morals.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of manga's. But I still wanted to try this one, because I thought it would be nice to see the story from the beast's POV. Though I liked it, it did remind me of the fact why I like books better than manga. In books you see more inside the head of the character. I was missing that with this manga. But overall, I still really enjoyed it. It was a nice little quick read.
I love the original story and was really excited to discover it again in manga format.
It’s a very quick read and follows the most recent movie quite well. There’s nothing new or original added to the story as far as I know.
For some reason, I preferred this version more than Belle’s story.
Also for the drawings, I found them better in this one!
ARC Copy...The Disney and Beauty and the Beast fans will surely love this and...illustrations are very lavish and detailed. It is interesting to read and review this in tandem/alternating reads with "Belle's Tale"...seeing how things are different yet similar from both protagonists's POV.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I am a full beauty and the beast fan , I will read any retelling let alone a Manga adaptation ..
It was nice to see the story from Beast's POV
This Disney Manga is retelling of Beauty and The Beast 2017 movie .
Carrying most of the important scenes .
I liked the different dialogs it contained .
But I think Belle was more in the so called Manga world than other characters .
The art was still stunning and with the Magic of colors this read was enjoyable .
I definitely recommend checking out both Belle's and Beast's stories! To revisit your memories , it's quite nice .
I read this book after Belle's Tale and found that I liked it a bit better but still found that it had some pacing issues. I think the reason I liked it more is that while Belle's story is focused more on the story and panel sequence, this one is more illustrative and focuses more on the Beast's inner dialogue. Both of these create a mood that is carried really well for most of the book, except for when it's broken when the Beast interacts (speaks) with Belle. I think both books could have benefitted from being longer so that we could fill in some of the gaps that made the pacing too fast and choppy. That sort of pacing works well for the screen, but it felt off as a comic.
3.5 stars
Thank you Netgalley for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I quite liked seeing the story from the beast’s POV. It was nice to get an insight into how he saw and experienced what happened between him and Belle, and it was also nice to see a bit of his mother.
I like how the illustrations and colors reflected the beast’s view of the world, and the illustrations overall were a lot crisper than in Belle’s Tale. I also like how the colors shifted from dark and gloomy at the beginning of the tale to brighter and more vibrant towards the end.
The overall flow of the story was also pretty good and I feel like we got more out of it than from Belle’s Tale.
“Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind.”
“Her sympathy makes me feel deserving, worthy. Like I can be better. She makes me feel like I can change and, more importantly, she makes me want to.”
Disney Manga Beauty & Beast Gn Box Set
beautiful art revealing the new version of the live action Beauty and the Beast. This version is connected to the beast version showing mainly Beast's version of the story. Its an easy read and helpful to gaining interest in reading for low comprehension readers. This book would be a great class discussion one to compare and contrast Bell's version to Beast's. Yet it could be a great contrast for different versions of the original fairy tale.
Telling the story of the Beauty and the Beast from the two different point of views of the main characters - I find the idea exciting. The two books work pretty well together, and not only because the cover pages complement each other and make up one image.
The colour palette, the dynamics, they all reflect the different personalities of Belle and the Beast, and you'll have to read both stories to get the whole picture. The visuals are strong, with a telling style, but I felt the dialogues clumsy here and there.
There is a useful tip at the end of the books on how to read manga (from right to left, from top to bottom, like Japanese writing), which would have been good to know prior to reading the stories. Well, we learn as long as we live...
Many thanks to NetGalley and Disney Manga / Tokyopop for this Advance Review Copy.
I absolutely adore beauty and the beast so I knew I was going to love this, and after reading Belle's tale I was even more excited. Its a manga version of the 2017 movie so don't go in expecting the original story. The art work so so detailed and gorgeous and AMAZING in full-colour! It was also a super quick read. I adored seeing the movie from Beast's perspective, it added more to the story and made me love it even more.
I love this even more than Belle's part because this pov is not shown in the original story or even movie and it showed us his childhood and how he turned into the beast.
"Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind" - Love this quote!
Also while reading I took screenshots of so many pages because the illustrations were so beautiful and I was touched by many of the things the beast said.
While the manga from Belle’s pov was so bright because that matched her optimism, the Beast’s story began as dark as his moods and gradually brightens as Belle’s impact grows on him.
Some of the parts did feel a bit repetitive because I had just finished reading Belle's manga but other than that no complains! Really enjoyed this
Highly recommend these 2 volumes, specially if u loved the original story and movie
I read Belle’s Tale, the companion to this story, first and it didn’t live up to my expectations, so they were much lower when I began reading the Beast’s perspective. Although I have historically focused most of my attention on Belle’s point of view (her reading habits are so relatable), being able to see things from the Beast’s was a refreshing change.
Sure, it’s still a story of an angry young man imprisoning a bookish young woman, who then falls in love with her jailer... And this manga-style graphic novel is based on the live-action adaptation that I couldn’t get into instead of the animated one that I was obsessed with as a kid. And Mrs Potts is just as creepy here as she was in Belle’s Tale.
But I quite enjoyed this one. It includes some of the Beast’s backstory and his thoughts on how his life has played out so far.
While Belle’s story was coloured in tones that matched her optimism, the Beast’s story begins as dark as his moods and gradually brightens as Belle’s impact on him grows.
The proportions are variable. When the Beast first captures Belle’s father, the Beast looks colossal. I don’t claim to understand art so this may be a way of highlighting the Beast’s power, but it looked odd, especially when compared to the next page where the proportions are more realistic.
I absolutely loved the front covers of the two tales, which joined together form a single image. It works both from a marketing perspective and a visual one. I know I’d have to buy a matching set.
The cursed (and I use this term lightly) object I most need in my life is the book that takes escapism to a whole new level.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and TOKYOPOP for the opportunity to read this graphic novel.
The art in this version of the story was just as beautiful and whimsical. I liked it a lot even though it wasn’t as color and “popping”.
According to me Beast’s part of the story was a lot more intriguing and interesting than Belle’s part. It was nice to get to know him a little better and read about his feelings as they evolved for Belle.
Like in the first book I felt like this was a bit rushed. Some more details could be added and smoother changes between scenes would have made it easier to understand that something new in the story was happening.
Thank you to NetGalley for the review copy! Even though I got to read this for free this review is a 100% my thoughts about the book.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. There was such a stark contrast in this Manga where everything was dark and there were more exclamations in this. I like the different view point that it gave coming from the Beast’s perspective
What a fun adaptation!
I loved every page of this book. It was so much fun to see the story from the Beast's perspective. There were multiple moments where the Beast would say or think something and I would realize a small detail I had never noticed before. It was an amazing job of telling a story we're all familiar with, but adding in new and fresh things. Nothing that was added was distracting or even that larger, but it made a small difference in both the story and how I will look at the movie from now on!
What a beautifully vibrant graphic novel! This full-color version has now become a must-buy for me.
The story from Beast's side was executed much better than Belle's tale, in my opinion. It didn't feel as disjointed, the scenes flowed through the story nicely. POV changes are always refreshing and while this does follow the live-action film, I found Beast's side more intriguing.
I definitely recommend checking out both Belle's and Beast's stories!
I absolutely adore Beauty and the Beast so I was thrilled to be able to read this manga early. Huge thank you, Disney Manga/TokyoPop via NetGalley for the e-ARC!
