Mallory Reaves has done it again. Belles story is a perfect balance of mtiple versions if this magical tale.
While looking at the art within these pages I was floored by the amount to talent this illustrator has.
Every last panel was done with thought and purpose and added to the story in enexpected ways.
Beautyband the beast is my favorite of all the classic fairy tales and this did justice to both the story and the way I've always pictured it in my mind.
The illustrations are very colorful and vibrant, and adorable to look at. I loved how the story of Beauty and the Beast in Belle's POV was condensed well in this one volume. The narrative was still there despite having a short amount of pages.
I have students requesting manga everyday. I might be biased because Beauty and the beast is my favorite.but I loved this story. I loved reading Belle’s perspective. I hope this is just the beginning for Disney Manga.
Beauty and the Beast was my favorite cartoon when I was little, I even remember watching it on a video player and cherishing my videotape. Today I still enjoy reading Beauty and the Beast retellings (and I always will) so I was very excited when I saw this manga on Netgalley.
To be honest, after reading it I must admit that I'm beyond disappointed.
My biggest problem is that this is described as manga. Why you ask? Well, manga is read from right to left, and this felt more like a graphic novel. Not because it was colored but because of the panel positions (it made more sense reading them from left to right).
Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, and Chip were some of my favorite characters and their drawings here looked kind of cursed. They felt flat and emotionless, I didn't like that.
Illustrations of Belle’s face also felt weird in some panels, like she was frozen or something.
I read in the description that this manga was originally published in 2017, no offense to the author but they could have improved this before releasing it again in the colored edition.
As for the story, you could see some parts were rushed and cut off but that didn't bother me that much since I already know what happens. Still, it would be nice to enrich it.
I'm truly sorry if my review seems a bit harsh but these are some aspects that shouldn't be ignored.
All in all, I didn't enjoy reading this manga and probably wouldn't recommend it to my friends or followers.
Thank you NetGalley & TOKYOPOP for a copy of this ARC graphic novel! The famous Beauty and The Beast story retold in manga format and in Belles POV. Here we learn about Belle's life in her small town and her encounters with the Beast and beyond. This is certainly a Disney movie fairytale retelling.
This story was very similar to the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast minus the singing, which is mostly also told from Belle's POV in a way - but it was refreshing to be able to see her thoughts as the story went on. In that sense, we understand her story arc and the romantic arc a bit more and how she came to open up. It's really interesting what she thought at first and how they slowly found out things they had in common - also how much the servants in the castle helped her.
Despite the plot being the same as before, so predictable in a sense, I really enjoyed learning more about Belles' character.
The pacing of this manga with the Beauty and the Beast story felt a little rushed at points. There were also scenes that reminded me of the Disney musical, but just images, without music - which was an interesting thing to include as the images don't give context if you haven't seen the Disney film. However we were provided with new information about Belle's past that wasn't always included in other versions of this story. I would have personally preferred that the pacing were just a touch slower and something in place of the musical scenes since this is a manga - but it does make this a fun and quick read!
The writing and dialogue were well done and easy to understand. Dialogue on the shorter side was all that was needed to illustrate the usage of words and the imagery helped in conveying tone. I appreciated the inner thoughts from Belle's POV though as further insight. I also really enjoyed this type of manga art style, It felt familiar but modern enough, the perfect blend between the imagery we know so well for this story already and the manga type of imagery we love as well!
Overall a very enjoyable read and one that I would recommend if you're a fan of this story and enjoy reading graphic novels and mangas. This also makes a great gift for Disney x manga lovers!
Thank you to Tokyopop, Disney Manga, and Mallory Reaves for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a two-book companion set of which this volume tells the tale of Beauty and the Beast more from Belle's perspective, while the alternate is from Beast's perspective.
The art is luscious and beautifully colored. This full-color edition is more based on the life-action Disney film, but definitely falls under anime style.
I enjoyed this version. It was easy to read, beautifully illustrated, and while there is quite a bit of overlap with its counterpart manga, it is still very flavorful and the internal thoughts of the title character tend to share some good words of wisdom and morals.
Really fun and enjoyable for kids to read if they like the story of beauty and the beast or Disney and princess movies in general. Loved that it was in full color.
Ah I love beauty and the beast story, I know this is taken from the action live, but still I like it, and I love how it makes much more sense reading both belle story and beast story, gives a much deeper experience, love the colours, the drawing looks cute as well, well it was a worthwhile experience.
I got a free ARC of this book through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
ARC COPY...Yes I was reviewing this in tandem and alternating read along side Beast's tale and it is interesting we get to see different and similar events from Belle's POV. Yes I have a feeling the Disney+Beauty and the Beast fans will love this manga especially in terms of lavish details and illustration style.
Thank you NetGalley for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
As kid I was never into Disney Princess movie so two years ago when I watched Beauty and the beast I fell in love with movie, I liked old and new version both
I loved Mrs Potts and Chip.and also having dreams that one day I will have library like in movie, I even liked Gaston's character, he is so evil.
I really liked manga version as well and
I enjoyed being privy to Belle’s thoughts throughout the story. However, I didn’t fall in love with it like I’d planned.
The art was stunning and with the colors this manga was beautiful. The story also felt a little rushed, even though we got the entire gist of what happened. As always I didn't liked when beast become prince, prince was not good looking💀
And therefore is winged cupid painted blind
Thank you Netgalley and TOKYOPOP for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I am a full beauty and the beast fan , I will read any retelling let alone a Manga adaptation ..
This Disney Manga is retelling of Beauty and The Beast 2017 movie . This time from POV we all have seen , Belle's
Carrying most of the important scenes . INCLUDING dance scene :)))
But I still think Belle was more in the so called Manga world than other characters . They were just in graphic novel world ..
The art was stunning and with the Magic of colors this manga was enjoyable .
I definitely recommend checking out both Belle's and Beast's stories! To revisit your memories , it's quite nice .
But I liked beast's version more , and this one didn't live up to my expectations
Disney Manga: Beauty and the Beast - Special 2-in-1 Collectors Edition: Special 2-in-1 Edition (Paperback)
by Mallory Reaves
beautiful art revealing the new version of the live action Beauty and the Beast. This version is connected to the beast version showing mainly Bells version of the story. Its an easy read and helpful to gaining interest in reading for low comprehension readers. This book would be a great class discussion one to compare and contrast Bell's version to Beast's. Yet it could be a great contrast for different versions of the original fairy tale.
Beauty and the Beast is my all-time favorite princess story which is why I requested this but I ended up very disappointed. This didn't feel like a completed project and had more draft qualities. The art was inconsistent, turning completely blurry in certain scenes, and there were many times when I felt like the characters lacked life. The panels were also very jarring. Important scenes ended as soon as they started and transitions were nearly nonexistent. I feel like this would have worked better as two volumes. As it is, everything feels too rushed and if it weren't for all the B&B movies I've watched, I would have felt pretty lost
Telling the story of the Beauty and the Beast from the two different point of views of the main characters - I find the idea exciting. The two books work pretty well together, and not only because the cover pages complement each other and make up one image.
The colour palette, the dynamics, they all reflect the different personalities of Belle and the Beast, and you'll have to read both stories to get the whole picture. The visuals are strong, with a telling style, but I felt the dialogues clumsy here and there.
There is a useful tip at the end of the books on how to read manga (from right to left, from top to bottom, like Japanese writing), which would have been good to know prior to reading the stories. Well, we learn as long as we live...
Many thanks to NetGalley and Disney Manga / Tokyopop for this Advance Review Copy.
I love the original story and was really excited to discover it again in manga format.
It’s a very quick read and follows the most recent movie quite well. There’s nothing new of original added to the story as far as I know.
Although I liked the drawings and the fact that it is coloured, I felt it lacked a bit of detailing.
First I would like to thank the publishers and Netgalley for providing a copy of this book for me to read in return for my honest review.
I'll be completely honest, Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie which also makes Belle my favorite princess. I loved reading this manga in a full color rendition and the color choices they made followed closely to the original film which was a nice detail. The manga itself follows the story told by the movie very well, it is fast tracked to get everything important in and doesn’t seem to miss any of the really important parts. I would love to read the partner to this, Beast's Tale just to see how the story differs from his view. I gave this manga 4.5 stars because while I enjoyed it, I feel it could have benefitted having more volumes to flesh out the story better rather that rush through it. If you in any capacity enjoyed the original Beauty and the Beast movie you will enjoy this manga, please check out the full color edition over the regular edition as it really elevates this manga.
This was a very fun and enjoyable read! It was so interesting to see Belle's thoughts and feelings and reading this made me want to re=watch the movie!
The story of Beauty and the Beast is one of my fav Disney stories and I love this so much!
Read this if you loved the story:)
I was obsessed with the animated Beauty and the Beast film as a kid. I loved Mrs Potts and Chip. I sang along with all of the songs. I fantasised about living in the library.
I couldn’t get into the live-action adaptation. That’s the version this manga-style graphic novel is based on. There were some scenes I wasn’t familiar with because of this but that didn’t impact how I felt about the story.
I enjoyed being privy to Belle’s thoughts throughout the story. However, while I was really keen to read this manga adaptation (and its companion, The Beast’s Tale), I didn’t fall in love with it like I’d planned.
It wasn’t always immediately clear which text was supposed to be read first. Some of the book was clearly intended to be read manga style, from right to left, but other panels made more sense when I read them from left to right.
While some panels were defined and clear, others were blurry. I read an advanced copy, though, so this may not be representative of the final version.
Sometimes the main characters’ faces were quite detailed and other times they weren’t. Mrs Potts definitely resembled the live-action version more than her animated self (which I loved), but she came across a bit creepy at times.
I will still be reading The Beast’s Tale, but my expectations aren’t as high anymore.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and TOKYOPOP for the opportunity to read this graphic novel.
Thank you NetGalley for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I love Beauty and the Beast, it’s one of my most favorite fairytales. So, seeing it in a manga adaptation got me really excited.
Since this was Belle’s Tale, it didn’t really provide a completely different perspective than what we already saw in the original book and movie. It was pretty much a short and concise view of everything that happened.
The flow of the manga felt a bit off at times because sometimes I’d have to read from left to right and at other times from right to left. The story also felt a little rushed, even though we got the entire gist of what happened.
The illustrations didn’t feel uniform throughout the entire manga. The characters looked a little off in some of the scenes and in certain positions. The characters also sometimes looked a little distorted and blurry (which I hope won’t be the case in the print version of the book). I liked the choice of colors as they really represented Belle’s view of the world.
I’m looking forward to reading the Beast’s tale, and I hope it’ll give readers a new view of the fairytale since we didn’t get a lot of the Beast’s POV in the original.
“The people who talk behind your back are destined to stay there.”
“It’s a choice, everyday, to be the best person you can be. To turn your anger into passion. To bring change, not destruction. To find beauty in love and understanding. And to find ‘home’, wherever you go.”
I want to start this review with saying that I really enjoyed the art, it was beautiful and very well made. The colors were pretty and really portrayed the mood of the story.
Sadly I wasn’t a big fan of the story. I love Beauty & the Beast and it has been a favorite of mine since I was small but according to me this manga felt a bit stressed. The story jumped from one scene to another which at times got very confusing, I also feel like some more details could’ve been added to the story for a newer reading experience.
Was it worth reading? Yes. I liked it but it didn’t give me the same whimsical feeling that this story usually does.
Thanks to NetGalley for this review copy. Even though this book was given to me for free the opinions in this review are wholly mine.
