Golden girls is one of the tv shows that will always be a favorite, always be relevant, and always be watched. I grew up with Golden Girls, and today I can identify with Dorothy (I feel just as cranky most of the time....), I see my grandmother when I see Sophia, and I have had ditzy friends like Rose! This is really a feel good tv show, and this book brings back a lot of memories.
A comprehensive guide that will be a handy reference to any long-time fan and a perfect primer to those just starting out with the show. The “golden nugget” highlights are especially fun!
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
There were parts of this book that I enjoyed, but it was all information that I already knew. This book didn't break any new ground.
I am a big fan of the Golden Girls, but I did not realize there are 180 episodes! This book gives the author's favorite of each of the seasons as well as biographies, summaries, "Golden Nuggets", rating, written by information, air date, director, etc. There really wasn't anything in this book that cou;dn't be found online.
Highly entertaining and a lovely tribute to "The Golden Girls" era as it truly was a show ahead of its time, with many topics still relevant today!
A sincere thank you for providing me a copy of “The Binge Watcher's Guide to The Golden Girls" in exchange for an honest review. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to read this story and leave my review voluntarily.
I love love this book, and it is perfect for the old or new fans of The Golden Girls. I watched the episodes as I read the book, I started with my favorite episodes.
Thank you Netgalley and Riverdale Avenue Books,
This is a fun trip down memory lane with a favorite television show. The book was interesting, but I felt at times it was a bit two dimensional. I wanted more Golden Girl charm I suppose.
A fun read which makes me want to binge all 7 seasons again. The meat of the book is of course the episode guide with a lot of interesting tidbits as well as Marissa´s own rating system. Great to read after watching an episode or two - The Golden Girls still remain of the best sitcoms out there.
The rest of the book consists of some short bios as well as some recipes (which I could have done without). Marissa does not like the spin-off "The Golden Palace" and gives it short shrift but I think it should have been included.
Overall a book to have on your sofa beside you while watching the show...
Thanks for Netgalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for a review...
What a fun book for fans of The Golden Girls (a show I happen to love!). It's basically a guide to each episode in the series, but there are also biographies and behind-the-scenes info on the show. There were a few typos, but that may be fixed in the final copy. If you're a fan of the show, this is a nice book to pick up.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the Publisher for an ARC of this book.
This book was just fun. It was obviously written by a fan of The Golden Girls. for the most part it is an episode guide for the series, but also included is a biography of all of the stars and some behind the scenes information. I would definitely recommend it if you or someone you know is a fan of the show. I plan on buying it and using it as a gift for several of my friends.
This book starts by telling you a bit about each actress’s background. It tells you a bit about how the show came to be. And it eventually leads to a break down of every single episode of the series. If you’re trying to decide what episode to watch, this will probably help you much faster than the Hulu catagories (though, when your favorites tend to be the musical episodes the Hulu categories can be super helpful).
Between the history of the show and the breakdown of each episode, we get a fun section on random Golden Girls fun. I loved this idea, there are menu ideas, music ideas and even a quiz to tell you which Golden Girl you are the most like. So fun.
My only constructive criticism is that I’m not sure I appreciate the extent of the author’s thoughts about the episodes. I’m sorry, I’m not trying to be unkind in saying that. I know the author loves this show. But her reasons for her personal rating system is very personal. One episode gets a low review because the author isn’t sure she agrees with the writers’ stance on gun ownership and another because of how they wrote the teenager.
I much preferred the Golden Nuggets which broke down fun details about the episodes. I a.so appreciate her mentioning some of storyline inconsistencies over the run of the series.
I got to read an early ebook edition from NetGalley. Thanks.
Three Stars.
I always call “The Golden Girls'' my comfort binge show and I’ve watched the whole series countless times, so I was really excited to read The Bingewatcher’s Guide to the Golden Girls. The book’s description of the episodes was fun to go through, whether you just read it by itself, or use it as a companion guide to watching the series. I don't always agree with her opinions, but the detail with which the author describes the episodes was fantastic. Unfortunately, there were some minor typos, like grammar or punctuation that were not serious, and easily ignored, but there were also some bigger factual mistakes including misnaming characters and confusing plot points with different episodes. I don’t think it would interfere with a casual fan’s enjoyment of the book and show but it could be confusing. Full disclosure: I was provided with an ARC, but it was given to me after the publication date, so I don’t know if these errors remain in the finished product or were fixed before publishing, but I did deduct a star for the sloppy editing.
I really did enjoy the book and concept, and I am extremely grateful to NetGalley and Riverdale Avenue Books for the opportunity to read and review The Bingewatcher’s Guide to the Golden Girls.
No matter your age this binge watcher's guide to the Golden girls is perfect those fan who love to binge watch the show. But it's the perfect addition to the bookshelf of those fans like me and my sister who have made our comfort watching show as the book gives you so much behind the scenes info.
This book is so fun! As a Golden Girls fan, I really enjoyed the work the author put into to making this book great! She goes through the episodes and rates and discusses them. She also includes a fun quiz to see which of them you are most like and discusses the actresses who play these women in the show. A must read companion for big fans of the show!
This book was better than cheesecake! I’m the kind person who gets really into things and I loved getting to learn more about my latest obsession: Golden Girls in The Binge Watcher’s Guide to The Golden Girls! Not only does the author give background about each actress, she gives a summary and breakdown of every episode! I loved learning about the series inception and filming. I thought the personality quiz, menu and cocktails would be perfect for a party! This is *THE* gift for the Golden Girls fanatic in your life!
This book was written with love. Not just a love of the show but the love of friends and friends who are family. Marissa DeAngelis' depth of information here is impressive and offered up in an easy-to-read fashion, almost as if she is simply having a conversation with you. It was as the book notes early on, a show where "exceptional writing and acting meet". Not only does DeAngelis offer up a recap of each episode, including guest stars, but offers her own opinions on why it resonated with not just here but probably other viewers. I should also note that despite the obvious love of the show and its characters, she doesn't hesitate to point out inconsistencies or story lines that simply didn't work for her.
And, come on. Admit it. Which Golden Girl are you? There is actually a quiz included to help you decide. Yes, I took it. I came off as a Rose but with leanings toward Dorothy, I guess I'd characterize it. Also probably fairly accurate. There are also bios of each of the actresses, lists of toys and games connected to the show, and even suggestions on how to throw the perfect watch party, remembering that the point is "to laugh and enjoy your friends". There's more, including a music play list for your part or simply entertainment. All this before it even got into the episode guide. As I said, the author has done a thorough job of research, oh, the horrors of having to indulge in watching every episode.....I'm jealous..... and packed "The Binge Watcher's Guide to The Golden Girls" with all sorts of data, fun facts, recaps, and glimpses behind the scenes. This one is a winner. I should also note, perhaps, that it was surely edited at the very least after Betty White's death, so it is quite up to date.
Thank you #NetGalley and #RiverdaleAvenueBooks for giving me the opportunity to rub elbows with some of the best friends a person could ask for. It was a joy.
Lots of background information for true Golden Girls fans. Breakdown of each episode of the series and the highlights and bloopers.
Very thoroughly researched. Just felt very text bookish to me. Not a bad thing, but for a show like that, I wish it was a little more fun.
Thanks to NetGalley for this arc in exchange for my review.
The Binge Watcher's Guide to The Golden Girls by Marissa DeAngelis was the perfect binge read for a lazy Saturday morning. What a wonderful homage to what is arguably the greatest sitcom of all time, and the stellar cast that continues to captivate us decades after these episodes were first aired. Ms DeAngelis's genuine and abiding love for the show is apparent on each and every page, and her astute and meticulous commentary of each episode is balanced and spot on. What she highlights so successfully is the sheer brilliance that emerges when exceptional writing and acting meet, and we are reminded of why our love for Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophie will forever endure. Highly recommended.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Riverdale Avenue Books for an ARC.
