I couldn't finish this one. The story moves really quickly, is written in a silly and immature voice, and doesn't make a lot of sense. It's posed as enemies to lovers, but there's no real tension or enemy aspect. The fairy dust thing didn't make a lot of sense, and I had a hard time following how The author wrote out her past. Thank you net galley and publisher for a copy to read and review.
This was a fun and fresh take on the characters of Peter Pan. Tink is on the run, and Capt. Hook is the ultimate heartthrob. The adventure was exciting, and there wasn’t a moment of boredom. I enjoyed every minute.
This erotic retelling started off strong. I liked Tink and I liked the situation of her first encounter with Hook. Unfortunately, as the story went on I became less interested. Hook’s character did not work for me personally. I wanted more villainous-dirty-misunderstood-selfish pirate and less kind-hearted gentleman stud. The tension was gone too fast. I would have put it down at 60% but for the sake of the review I skim read the last 40%. Many would probably enjoy this fun story but it just wasn’t for me.
Thank you netgalley and City Owl Press for the ebook ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book. This book was magical and beautiful – everything you could want in a fantasy novel. The characters were compelling and feel unique and their own despite being extremely well known characters. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.
This sounded like a cute Captain Hook retelling. However, it was a lot more. Well-written and an enjoyable story. I liked reading it.
I enjoyed this twist on a Peter Pan retelling. Peter Pan has always been a favorite of mine and I devour any type of retelling I can get. Second Star to the Left had great world building and was very descriptive of the way Neverland looked. I enjoyed the chemistry between our main characters. This will be added to my reread list for sure!
This fairy tale retelling wraps steam and longing around Tinkerbell and Captain Hook’s romance. I enjoyed the descriptive writing, fanciful plot, and well-drawn characters. While many Peter Pan lovers are buzzing over the book, dare I admit not recalling the finer details of the story. So Second Star to the Left portrayed it in a fresh, lush way, without comparisons.
I LOVED this retelling! Definitely a five star Peter Pan retelling. It was so magical and the romance between Tink and Hook was so steamy! They had so much passion for each other and I loved Tink’s enemy-to-lover approach to their romance whereas Hook was basically a simp in denial for her. I really enjoyed how much weight this pirate crew puts on the value of family and thought the scenes in their cove were so heartwarming. I thought it was really neat how the author wove in aspects of the original Peter Pan story to suit her narrative, like how Blackbeard is the croc and how Peter and his band of lost boys was created. I did not expect the plot twist with Lily, and the plot twist with Blackbeard also came out of nowhere. I also like the idea of how Tink discovers she can make more dust. It ties in with the romance aspect of the story so well. One small thing that kind of took me out of the story sometimes was when the author used the word “suck.” I’m not sure if this is just me but that word just feels too modern for this particular world and was a bit jarring to read in the dialogue. I thought the scene about them finding the scale was really fast, but it made room for all the drama that came after. Overall this is officially one of my favorite retellings I’ve ever read. Highly recommend.
I LOVED this book for the most part. The characters in this book were so stubborn and funny, and the way they were forced to work together just worked well with the story and didn't seem forced. The enemies to lovers storyline was also amazing, you could really see the feelings developing between Hook and Tink. The ending did leave me a little disappointed though as a lot of Hook and Tink"s actions seemed so sudden and out of character. I'd have liked Tink to have stayed as independent as she was throughout the rest of the book, rather than appearing solely reliant and obsessed with Hook. However I did adore the characters and the romance and the overall plot. 4 stars from me ☆
I absolutely love this take on tinkered. The chemistry between the characters is electric. And leeds me to wanting more. I love retelling and this book was no exception and made me love them even more.
Not for me. I think I’m too fond of the original to enjoy this retelling with such a heavy focus on the romance. The characters were too different for my own taste and reading comfort zone.
3.4/5
An wonderful idea and structure for a peterpan retelling i really liked the twist in tinker bells character however the plot twsits disnt quite sat with my in the roght way
It’s a very good retelling
An enemies to lovers, fantasy romance between Captain Hook and Tinkerbell…I loved it!
All my fantasy romance lovers put this one your tbr! It was everything I wanted ♥️ it was fun, light hearted, medium steam, banter galore, enemies to lovers and a Peter Pan retelling!
Banished Tink is trying to find a way home and the only way is to steal a treasure from Captain Hook, unknowingly bringing a curse on him. Obviously he’s not happy about that so he tracks her down and demands she lift the curse. She can’t but the mermaids can. The only way the Mermaid will, it is if they bring back another rare treasure…together.
It was an overall good time and I can’t wait for more retellings by this author
Adult content note: 2-3 detailed steamy scenes.
Just loved this one! Van Dyke’s action-packed debut puts a sexy, adult spin on Tinker Bell and Captain Hook. On this daring adventure, mermaids become the least of their problems, as Hook and Tink come under threat.
Second star to the Left is a new take on Peter Pan, with a focus on Tinkerbell and Captain Hook.
Many Thanks to NetGalley and City Owl Press for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Overview:
Tinkerbell has been exiled from Neverland from doing the one thing all pixie’s are taught never to do- Selling Pixiedust. In order to return home, she follows the only lead she has- which may involve seducing a pirate to steal precious gems.
Hook thinks he found a true treasure in Tink- Until her pixie dust laced kiss leaves him lost, with bad luck following from then on. He chases her to take away the curse- but she doesn’t even realise there is one to begin with.
The Mermaid Queen believes she has a solution- but it will involve them working together to find a priceless treasure…which may lead them to realise the goals they had may not be the only one they thought.
Review:
Plot and World building- A Peter pan retelling with a twist? Sign me up! I love any retelling I can get my hands on and this story following Tinkerbell and Captain Hook (my favourite) is a beautifully imagined idea.
It’s a modern twist with an imaginative plot that allows the story to remain slightly true to the original, with so many references it’s astounding.
The plot overall was well written, executed and flowed from the pages so well I felt I was practically inside the book.
The narrative was well done and the fact we have both Tink and Hook’s point of views throughout was well done. The pacing was exceedingly fast but for a story with so much plot to deliver it works well.
Also the romance was good but was probably the one part I took some of my review stars off for- I love some Enemies-to-Lovers. The only issue I had is that it felt like it went enemies to lovers so abruptly that the build up in it wasn’t quite there for me and made me take a big break before continuing, but it was still pretty satisfying.
Characters:
Tink is hilarious, well developed and a genuine delight to read her as someone who is not all “holier than thou” for once! She’s the bad girl Tink I have been dreaming off and her relationship with Hook was beautiful.
Hook was the sarcastic, brooding, bad boy lead you expect- reminded me slightly of the Once Upon a Time iteration who is definitely one of my favourites. He was well developed, leapt from the pages and was just generally wonderful.
Final Thoughts,
Beautifully imagined, romance for days, swooning for my own Captain Hook please!
This seemed like it was going to be interesting, but after a bit, it was lacking an actual plot. It also seems like a sequel.
Though I read the synops, the book wasn't exactly what I expected it to be. Yes, a retelling of Peter Pan revolving around Tinker Bell and Hook and with romance, but the romance was a bit more intense than I thought. Apparently I don't know the author that well yet.
But did I like it? Yes I certainly did! I'm a fan of adventurous stories and romance and in this book I found both. I loved the banter between Hook and Tink, their quest, the crew and their adventures.
I loved both Tink and her feistyness and Hook his sweet side. Both characters were fun to read about. And dear (not so) old Smee. Loved this version of him. The author did a great job at making them all feel real.
I have to say that if the characters all had very different names, for me it would have just been te same fun story. It wasn't always so much 'Peter Pan'. But it worked and as such it was a fun retelling.
Thank you Netgalley and City Owl Press for giving me the chance to read it early.
I must say, I would never have thought to write an apologia for Peter Pan’s Captain Hook, let alone make him a romantic hero, but that’s exactly what Second Star to the Left is. Captain Hook is a nice, decent man with a crew that loves him, smouldering looks and a hot body. As far as Tinker Bell is concerned, he also knows how to use it in the bedroom. The cover of the book did not let me expect that.
The book takes place somewhere in the seven seas, though not in the Neverland or ‘real’ world. Tinker Bell, a human-sized pixie with wings and pixie dust, is stuck in the human world after a daring rescue of her cousin Lily from the Blackbeard. The Queen of mermaids has promised to help, if Tink does her a favour first. That involves stealing from Captain Hook. Tink succeeds in this by seducing him, but no matter how far she flees, he’ll come after her. Partly because the queen has put a curse on him and partly because he can’t get her out of her system.
Action, romance, and sexy good times follow. Familiar names from the Peter Pan stories make appearances too, like Peter himself. There are misunderstandings and betrayals aplenty, near deaths and noble sacrifices, revenge and life-changing revelations. And, since this a romance, a happily ever after—or at least for now.
This was a well-written and fairly well-paced book, though I must confess I found it too long. The middle part could’ve been a lot tighter (the bit about Royal Navy was a Chekhov’s gun that never got fired, for example). But if you like the overlooked characters of Peter Pan to have their chance in happiness, with good bedroom scenes, this is for you.
An entertaining and moderately steamy remixed/retelling of Tinkerbell and Captain Hook falling in love. The first 1/4 of the story was slow going but once the adventure started I couldn’t put it down. I’ve never read Megan Van Dyke’s work before but I will in the future.
