Thank you to netgalley for providing me with this free arc in exchange for an honest review of the book.
I loved this! This is an accurate Depiction of the effects of someone who is suffering with addiction.
This is the authors debut and I will 1000% be watching for what they do next and continue to recommend this to everyone
This story is so moving. I’m sad for myself, because I don’t think I thought about the triggers this novel could have brought about for me. So I didn’t get to finish it, but the writing is absolutely beautiful.
I know a few addicts, so this story kind of crushed my heart. To read about our main character and know that I know others like him was too much for me. I wanted to finish this so badly but my brain couldn’t take it.
I’m so thankful though that this kind of story is being told. I wish this book all of the good luck in the world.
Loved the book! Pace was fast paced and it really pulled at my heart strings! The book was engaging and got me hooked till the end. Absolutely enjoyed reading this book.
I do really wish this ARC had of come with content warnings and trigger warnings. The discussion of drug abuse and suicide ideals were thrown into the readers face as soon as they started the book, and I for one was surprised to find no content warnings. I did over all enjoy the book, and I loved that it touched on tough subjects. The raw honesty and reflection of addiction and those suffering with drug abuse is truly astonishing. It very accurately depicts what it's like and how those who suffer through addiction think and feel when they're going through it. I honestly had no clue if I would even enjoy this book, or what kind of reaction it would trigger within me as an ex-addict. The messy side of drug abuse was clear in the first few chapters, then the main character's development throughout the book just blossomed. The two main characters are beautifully written and blend together so well. All of the friends and family members are fun and relatable. I honestly enjoyed every bit of this book. Truly breathtaking! Raw honest addiction aspects, bit of romance, bit of sadness and a bit of sarcasm. You just can't go wrong with this book!
Bonus points to this book since the author did reach out via Instagram when I posted in my story how disappointed I was there weren't trigger warnings and told me in the printed version that the warnings are there, but I feel that the ARC deserved them too.
All in all, definitely would recommend.
I think I expeceted more Romance from this book. I really likes the first half of It, I think that the description of his journey ti sobriety was very well done, but the second half where the supposed love story should have taken place felt extremely rushed and not nearly enough well described as the rest of the book.
This is a story about love and second chances. This is a little less about the main characters relationship with his ex girlfriend, and more about the journey of sobriety. I enjoyed this read.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me this! Wow this was something. It took me a really long time to read, but overall I’m really happy that I read this. The male character in this book is an addict, and because of that has lost almost everyone in their life. Especially his love Keelie. This was a beautiful second chance romance. The characters and plot was great. Throughout the whole book you get an insight into Matty’s thoughts. I love that it was all in Matty’s POV. I love that they delve deeper into his addiction and recovery process. This was such a beautiful read!
While the story itself was important and heartwarming, the execution needs a lot more work. The writing felt choppy and the sensitive subjects spoken about. a bit too lightly for my liking. WHile I understand joking about trauma I personally found it too juvenile and frankly off putting. i have full faith the author will eventually write something better, but this just wasn;t it for me
Wow, this book! This is not your typical romance novel and I appreciated the heck out of it. The entire book is told from the MMC perspective as he journeys through life, love, and relationships as an addict. It is raw and real, and I couldn't put the book down. It doesn't feel like a typical romance novel, and it doesn't follow many of the archetypes we're used to, but yet the love is there and so is the HEA. I (thankfully) have very little understanding of addiction and the trials those who love addicts deal with, and so I loved and appreciated this book and what it could teach me as well.
This book was an emotional ride I wasn’t ready for. Disguised as a second chance love story, this book offers a jarring and poignant perspective on the effects addiction has on a person and their relationships. I appreciate that we aren’t given a sugar coated version of the story, as we’re shown Matty at both the lowest point of his addiction, and as he shows repeated strength in the face of his triggers. Such an emotional ride!
Thank you to NetGalley and Foxglove publishing for an e-ARC of this novel in exchange for my review.
thank you to NetGalley and Foxglove Publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
this was such a phenomenal book and i was engaged from the very first page.
the story centers around Matty, a man in his twenties who struggles with drug addiction. told from his point of view, we get a deep glimpse into what life can be like for a person who struggles with addiction and how detrimental this disease can be. when we first meet Matty, we see that he is jobless, has lost the love of his life, and is living with his parents. shortly thereafter, he's forced to move in with his older brother as he's forced to go through a detox and get sober. it's a hard and painful journey for Matty and i appreciate Piazza for showing readers just how difficult it can be.
the book is divided into two parts - the first part alternates between chapters about the present and chapters about the past, which help to showcase how Matty's childhood has affected him as an adult and what happened in his relationship with his childhood best friend turned sweetheart, Keelie. the second part of the story focuses solely on the present and revolves around the wedding of Matty's two old friends, who also happen to be Keelie's friends, forcing Matty and Keelie to reunite two years after they broke up. as a childhood friends to lovers and second chance romance enthusiast i thoroughly enjoyed Matty and Keelie's romance, but what i especially loved about their rekindling, is the fact that Keelie wasn't the magical antidote to Matty's addiction. rather, Matty became sober through the support of his brother, family, and friends and put in the hard work to become sober on his own merit. Keelie did serve as a motivation for his sobriety, but Matty came to realize that the ultimate reason he wanted to become sober was to become a better version of himself, so that he could be a reliable and present brother, son, uncle, and friend. it was nice to see that love wasn't featured as a magical cure in this book and that Keelie served as part of Matty's support system prior to their romance igniting again.
overall, this story was very raw and honest and heartfelt and i enjoyed it a lot, as not only did it serve as entertainment, but it taught me information of value. it is a story about addiction and mental illness, but it is also a story about family, love, and friendship and i loved how Piazza intertwined the two together in telling Matty's story. if you are a "This is Us" fan and love Kevin Pearson and/or ship Kevin and Sophie on the show, then this book is a definite must read for you!
be sure to check Kelly Piazza's website for trigger warnings before reading the book!
TRIGGER WARNINGS:
-drug abuse, suicide, addiction, mental health; depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder
As much as it's a romance, it's also a heartbreaking story about one man's struggle with an addiction he's had to overcome throughout his life.
Over 13 years ago, Matt Arvali met Keelie Santiago and fell in love. The two of them have been inseparable, until Matt's drug addiction shattered the bond they shared and shattered their relationship. While Matt continues to plunge into addiction, Keelie is forced to dissociate herself from him to prevent herself from being destroyed. Fast forward two years later, they met at their friends wedding giving him one last chance to talk to her again and possibly win her back.
Kelly Piazza created a beautifully written narrative, the style of writing fit the narrative so well, and the characters were created with an untainted honesty that I rarely see in a love story. It was gratifying to see the characters grow and face their fears, right the wrongs they committed, and accept responsibility for their actions. It was an inspiring tale .

A great story which explores the raw feelings surrounding addiction and how the characters experience this. The reader can really empathise with the characters and the key moments they go through and the experiences in their bittersweet love story
First off, what a great debut novel; the writing was strong and I really felt for all the characters. I personally prefer 'romance' novels that tackle more serious topics so I really, really enjoyed the story. But I would agree that this may not appeal to readers of traditional, lighthearted romance novels full of tropes.
This book was a fun treat! I loved it! It was a good reset after I read a heavier book. It kept me flipping pages well past my bedtime!!
This is a debut novel from Kelly Piazza and my gosh you would have no idea! This book is an exceptional read, filled with a very raw storyline of addiction and the collapse of their relationship.
Don't Overthink this is told through Matty's POV following his oxy addiction, how this then affected and ruined his relationship with the love of his life Keelie and then through his (not sugarcoated) recovery journey.
I can't recommend this novel highly enough, I would just check the TWs as there are some darker themes.
When I requested this book from NetGalley after seeing it a few times recommended on TikTok, I did not know what to expect as I haven’t read the author’s books before and more so, many times lots of new to me authors from that platform failed to be my liking.
This is not the case with this story.
I had to put it aside for a day because the brutal honestly and raw emotions that are displayed in here are just taking a lot from me.
And that’s what a great story should do in my cards.
I love a good second chance romance and if you add all the angsty moments with the characters’ development and growing up in more ways than another, you just make a perfect story for me.
There's no way to not overthink some scenes and there's a lot to take in here.
I loved the connection and inner thoughts, even the bad ones with lies and trying to lie to himself where he only should've been honest.
It's a hard story to read, but it's a must read one at the same time. The romance part just shows how much love can change a life.
Very grateful to the publisher/author for my review copy
I thought this was a very sweet book. It tackled some very big issues regarding addiction, suicide, and mental health. I enjoyed how this book balanced these very difficult, real issues however also felt light. I loved the characters and seeing how they evolved throughout the storyline.
This book was a truly stunning piece that showed the realities of addiction. I think that we often see pieces that glorify recovery and the "after", but this piece touches on all the true struggles that someone who has an addiction or someone who loves someone with an addiction deals with.
Thanks to the publisher & NetGalley for the eARC for review.
