As a big fan of Molly Shannon, I appreciated the brutal honesty laced with her classic sense of humor. What an amazing story of what grows from grief and dysfunction and eventually blossoms into comedic joy. I loved this book and would recommend it to everyone who has suffered loss and grew up with high dysfunction. Honestly, I recommend it to anyone. FANTASTIC!!
You guys, you absolutely have to go get this book. I know Molly Shannon because I don't live under a rock lol but I don't think I would have considered myself a fan, before this.
This is everything you could want and more from a celebrity memoir. She was so open and honest and really opened up about herself, her past, and her career. I was crying alongside her when bad things happen, and I felt just as excited for her when she talked about all the good things! Molly came from a very hard childhood, but it honestly just made her better, stronger, and honestly more lovable. This is such an inspiration read, and Molly really made me get a better perspective on life after reading it.
Whether you are a fan or not, this book is the perfect celebrity memoir. I'll seriously be a fan for life.
An amazing memoir that captures Shannon's unique experiences with family, trauma, and fame. Molly Shannon is well-known for her time on Saturday Night Live, as well as the dozens of other television shows and movies she's been apart of, but fans likely didn't know about her childhood impacted by the horrific loss of her mother, sister, and cousin. There's so much to unpack in this story, and Shannon does a great job of sharing the more vulnerable moments alongside the funny ones. Encourage readers to listen to this memoir if possible in order to get the full experience.
Wow! Molly brings such warmth, charisma, humor, and heart to her narration of this wonderful memoir. Did I expect to be in tears 10 minutes into this? Absolutely not. But for every moment of heartache and loss, there's so much unadulterated joy! I found myself sobbing at the wheel only to be cackling a few minutes later. I cannot wait to recommend this to our patrons!
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for giving me an ARC of this book to review.
I have been a fan of Molly Shannon since her days on Saturday Night Live. I had no idea what her life was like growing up, or all of the trauma and pain her life had before she became a star. In this book Molly shares a lot of details from her life, the good, the bad, and the ugly. She doesn't hold back on things that are extremely painful to her ( the death of her mother, sister, and cousin along with her relationship with her father). After listening to this as an audio book ( Molly reads it herself) . I certainly walked away with more knowledge about Molly's life and a lot of respect for her. They say that humor comes from pain, unfortunately Molly knows this all to well.
Molly Shannon was born to narrate audiobooks. This autobiography tells Molly Shannon's journey through becoming an actress but also her difficult relationship with her father. A great read that fans of the actress will enjoy!
This one joins the pantheon of great memoirs from female comedians. Molly's narration makes it. A charming, touching memoir.
I wanted to like this a lot more than I actually did. Somehow, Molly’s writing feels guarded or closed off, despite her sharing (and sometimes oversharing!) her story—at times it felt like a reporting of the facts of her life, without committing consistently to letting the reader inside the feelings and experiences of it. The parts that shone brightest for me were the chapters about bringing Mary Katherine Gallagher to life and her tenure at SNL, where my familiarity with her work helped to complement the writing and fill in some of the depth and connection I felt lacking elsewhere throughout.
From Saturday Night Live to playing the first queer representation of Emily Dickinson, Molly Shannon has quite the range. She lost her mom, baby sister, and cousin in a car accident. She was also in the car and her father was driving. Despite their issues, Molly had a unique and loving relationship with her father, which gave her the freedom to explore her craft. She brings together the stories of her life in this funny, heartbreaking, and heartwarming memoir.
I’ve been a fan of Molly Shannon for years, but I never knew anything about her background. When I saw this audiobook (narrated by the author), I snatched it up. I love listening to authors tell their stories, and boy, does Molly have some stories to tell. I identified with her in some ways, and not at all in others, but my heart went out to her. I laughed with her, and I wanted to hug her throughout the book. It’s a quick read/listen, and I definitely recommend it if you’re a fan of her work. It’s out in April.
A great memoir that is a perfect combination of personal anecdotes and professional inside scoop. I loved Molly's stories and her delivery on audio was excellent. I have always loved her as a performer but learning about the tragedy she experienced as a young child and the determination and self-discovery that came because of and sometimes despite that rough past made me love her work even more. If you are a Molly Shannon fan, this one is definitely for you. But even if you don't know much about her, but you are a fan of memoirs, this is an excellent one!
Molly Shannon's story is riveting. Listening to her begin the book by talking about losing her mother suddenly at a young age (in addition to her sister) is wrenching - and one of the most powerful things about her narrating her own work. I loved listening to her antics as a young girl and teenager, as well as what it took to make it as an actress. She also sheds light on why she has been so successful - her "don't give up" attitude, coupled with her creativity in getting things done. Writing her own characters, revising them, putting on her own shows, and sticking with it are great examples of her fortitude. She leaves you cheering for her, and I can't wait to see what she does next.
An honest, emotional, and hilarious memoir, there were a lot of parts of this book I really enjoyed.
Hearing about where the inspiration for so many of the author's iconic characters came from was fascinating, as was learning about her close relationship with her father and how she remained aggressively optimistic through a less-than-easy life. It was also a joy to listen to the story in the author's own words with her unique tone of voice, especially when it came to her character's catch phrases (I laughed out loud the first time she read, "I'm fifty!").
I did find there were moments where the lack of chronology interrupted the flow of the story, but overall an enjoyable listen.
I was lucky to receive an advanced copy of Molly Shannon’s book. I truly enjoyed this book. I’ve known who Molly Shannon is but only her SNL work. This book explored her upbringing as a child to a single father after her mother died when she was 3. Such a genuine telling of her life and experiences. Highly recommend.
From SNL to The White Lotus, Molly Shannon’s career has been enviable, and her talent obvious, but her new memoir reveals that her life outside of show business is just as fascinating as anything she’s done on screen. It’s honest and funny and not to be missed for admirers of the actress.
Wow, Molly Shannon shares details about her tragic family past, her early career, her time on SNL and various movies and her rocky relationship with her alcoholic father. Told with Molly's trademark humor and wit, this book will make you both laugh and cry. Really enjoyable on audio read by the author. Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my advance review copy!!
The audiobook for Hello, Molly! is everything you want it to be and come to expect when it comes to the great Molly Shannon. There isn't too much to say--if you ever watched Shannon on SNL, you know she is a master storyteller, and this audiobook is exactly what I wanted it to be. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and everything in between.
