Unfortunately, I dnf this book 10% in.
This is not due to the book, but to me not managing to connect with it.
The book is really technical, which is one of the pros! But not knowing much of ships and not being interested in knowing the specifics so in detail, it just wasn't for me.
Another big upside is the research that went not just in technicalities, but in historical facts as well... I really wanted to know more about those!!
Strongly recommended to ship aficionados, and historical ones as well if the technical talking doesn't turn you off.
This is the worst book I ever finished.
I read the whole thing only because I had agreed to read and review it in exchange for access to a pre-publication copy, but after completing it I’m not sure how it ever got published in the first place. The book drops the reader in the middle of the narrative with absolutely no introduction. I was completely confused with the many proper names, acronyms, and lack of narrator.
The British sink the German ship. That’s it. There’s no character development. There are a lot of details about which kind of bullets and how many by which destroyer. I have no idea if the positive goodreads ratings are real but I can’t imagine how other people could like this book. What a waste of my time and total disappointment.
Pen and Sword and the late John Winton retell the tale first published in 1983 of the sinking of the Kriegsmarine Battlecruiser the Scharnhorst. Winton describes the Scharnhorst as well as all of the Kriegsmarine as what is termed a "fleet in being." The Scharnhorst had one task, harass shipping in the North Sea and take up invaluable resources needed to help the Soviets survive the Nazi onslaught.
A terrific novel about the pursuit of one of the most famous German warships in WW2. The story is told from the viewpoint of survivors from both sides and really gives you the feeling you were there. A great read.
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you Sapere books and Net Galley for providing this Arc in exchange for my honest review. This book is such an interesting read into a very important event in Naval history. I appreciate the extensive research the author completed to describe this piece of history in such vivid detail. The author included events and accounts from multiple sources detailing what led up to the end for the Scharnhorst. The charts at the beginning of the book are very helpful in understanding pivotal locations. I would have appreciated more photos and maps throughout the book. The descriptions of weather and living conditions brought the historical events to life, but, at times, it would have connected the reader even more with additional photos or illustrations . That aside, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in Naval history. Thank you again to Net Galley, Sapere Books, and to the author for providing an ARC for my review.
