Another installment in the life and duties of DI Thomas Mariner. This one takes us through a current case and one that happened when Tom was still at school and on holiday with his mum. Part told in flashbacks both stories are interesting and absorbing.
Loved it.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher I read a free advance review copy of the book. This review is voluntary, honest and my own opinion.
I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.
There was a lot going on in this novel: Tom is facing an enquiry over an injury to a suspect he was chasing; he is asked to assist in a cold case after the body of his first girlfriend is discovered; he has two suspicious deaths he is meant to be investigating; and then later a schoolgirl goes missing.
I found the thread relating to the cold case very dull, and started skimming the italicized sections set in the past early on - far more information than I needed about Tom's first sexual encounter. The solution to the main case was a bit 'out there', but there was a lot of good misdirection along the way. I felt the missing schoolgirl strand could have been better developed - it was mostly off-page and seemed tacked on. And as for the inquiry, I kept forgetting all about it.
Not the best in this series.
