This book was informative and helpful as a parent (especially a parent to 4 very different children with different needs & strengths). Def recommend to parents and educators everywhere!
Such a great book. I think if you are a parent you will defenitely benefit from this. The other books are good too
This books was instrumental in helping my better understand my special needs son. I have recommended it to several other parents in the special need community. Our sons therapist uses it now and has since taught a class on the information in this amazing book!
What a very fascinating book. Sometimes it was a bit heavy but it is still a very worthwhile book to read. Thank you for sharing the information!
As a mother of two children with sensory issues this has been a really helpful reference.
While it doesn't look as "glamourous" as some of the newer tittles on the market for this subject, please do not over look it and it has a wealth of information.
A must have for any ADHD, Autism and any other sensory issues.
I can clearly see the informational value in this book, but it wasn’t what I expected as a parent wanting some insight. The marketing was geared to parents, but it read more like a textbook. As a mom I would prefer something more conversational and shorter. This felt like homework. I think it should be marketed more as a resource for professionals in education, health and childcare. Having said that I did learn quite a bit. The language is easy to read, and the use of example scenarios was helpful. I was grateful for the charts and sections that allowed me to skim over parts that either didn’t pertain to my situation or felt repetitive. It was well organized.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for my digital copy.
I understand that this book is not for distribution, but when you watermark every single page, it not only tells me that you don't trust me, it takes the entire document impossible to focus on completely. Therefore, that is the reason why I gave the rating I did. Do not watermark the entire book!
Very insightful and educational! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a complimentary copy of this book.
As a DHH educator, I often work with students who have SPD and many of the symptoms in the book rang true for me. This is considered such a vital resource for professionals in the special education/physical therapy and occupational therapy world, and I was glad to be able to read and review a new edition.
I hope this resource continues to be available for professionals and parents who may find it useful for years to come.
Thank you NetGalley for providing this copy. The book was very informative. However, the book was similar to Lindsey Biel’s. Not a book you’d prefer to read in one seat, though.
This is far from the "bible" for Sensory Processing Disorder and/or Autism but, it is extremely helpful to parents looking to understand their children more than they did upon opening this book. Ultimately, it's about effort in seeking knowledge and simply knowing your child in ways that outsiders never will. Like other parenting books, these pages are merely suggestions. No one child/person is alike. That being said, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone searching for help in knowing how to best approach different coping mechanisms.
I received this complimentary ARC from the publisher, courtesy of NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
I have purchased previous editions of this book and kept it as a reference for information and ideas. I highly recommend this to parents and professionals who are looking for additional advice.
This is a must-read for anyone working in the field of children with special needs! It is easy to understand and very applicable to practice. This was originally recommended to me by my Occupational Therapist when I was a teacher and I continue to recommend it to other people in the field.
I read this book, thinking that a lot of it fit my 6yo son's temperament. He's been diagnosed with ADHD and is often on the go and fidgety, he's picky with food, he doesn't like certain clothing, and has significant outbursts, among other things. We recently found out that in addition to ADHD, he has autism, but this book is still helpful. Having a sensory processing disorder doesn't exclude one from having another disorder - many of these things fit together and I found that this book had a lot of great tips on how to handle different "problem" behaviors, such as the picky eating, motor skill issues and clumsiness, kids who seek out sensory input and those who avoid it, etc. I will say - this is a helpful book, but should not be the only book you read. It does include case studies, which I like, but it doesn't have all the information you need. It's a good book to have in your library, but be sure to check out others as well.
As a teacher this book is gold dust! As soon as I started reading it I could relate the stories of various children with different SPD to children I've taught over the years.
This book explains these differences very succinctly and makes it easy to understand the reasons why children react, or cope in different ways to others.
I think there should be a copy in every school and I will no doubt be using this for the rest of my career!
I requested this book as I am adamant that my youngest had SPD. I found it so insightful and helpful learning why she reacts to certain situations and how to help her with these. This book has been so incredibly helpful. I have already ordered a hard copy of this so I can keep referring back to it in future.
Great updated edition. I found this to be a good introduction to understanding sensory processing disorder basics. I am an educator and mental health professional and I share this with others who struggle to understand the concepts.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Updated and revised 3rd edition of this great book on children on the Autism spectrum. There is new information on sensory processing disorder, helps you understand, navigate help in treatment and resources. This is a parents go to book for answers. I received an advanced copy of this book from publisher and my review is solely my opinion.
As a parent of a child with SPD I was very interested in reading rhis book. While it provided a lot of useful information I felt that some updated terminology for 2022 should have been used, ie "special needs" and "meaningful play". Overall the book contained information helpful to parents, teachers, and others. Thank you NetGalley and Penguin for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Informative, well researched with useful strategies, I definitely recommend this book for parents of neurodivergent children. Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book!
