The book effectively compiles information from various reputable sources, including leading autism organizations and government health institutions, making it a convenient one-stop resource. It covers a wide range of topics, from early signs and diagnosis to treatment options and strategies for creating a supportive home environment. The emphasis on patience, understanding, and celebrating individual strengths provides a positive and encouraging tone throughout. While the book doesn't delve deeply into any single aspect of autism, its breadth of coverage makes it a valuable starting point for families new to the autism journey or those seeking a general understanding of the spectrum. The inclusion of practical tips and resources, such as links to support organizations, further enhances its usefulness.

As a parent of an almost five-year-old who receives OT for sensory issues, I found this book to be really informative about the broad variety of sensory processing differences.
The lists and charts for ways to determine if a child might have SPD were helpful, and the at-home activities to help promote healthy sensory processing seemed very simple to do. I also liked that advocacy with other caregivers and pediatricians for helping a child with SPD was addressed. .
It was well organized and I liked that it gives additional resources to refer to for further help. I was able to take away a lot of tips and resources from this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

The third edition updates the previous versions with more current research and insights, making it a useful guide for understanding and supporting children with SPD. While the book is informative, it occasionally feels repetitive, and some of the suggestions might not apply to every child, as SPD is a spectrum. Overall, it’s a helpful starting point for anyone seeking to better understand and support a child with sensory processing challenges, though it may not provide all the answers. Worth reading for those new to the topic or in need of concrete ideas, but it’s not a comprehensive or one-size-fits-all solution. Four stars.

I really enjoy the information in this book as a mom of multiple neurodiverse children. It’s helped me so much in parenting and remembering to pause and reconsider my own actions, as well as helped me to unpack things from when I was younger.

As a new grad OT working in early intervention and preschools and completely out of my depth, I turned to the Out of Sync Child 1st and 2nd editions -- and they were my saving grace! When I saw there was a 3rd edition, I absolutely had to get my hands on it. This book is written thoroughly and in such easily digestable, family-friendly terms that it not only helped me understand what I was seeing, but also how I could explain such behaviors to concerned parents and teachers. I love the treatment/activity ideas, and still find myself browsing through my well creased hard copy of editions 1 and 2, and hope to add edition 3 to my physical bookshelf soon.

This book is a must-read for anyone striving to create a supportive environment for children who experience the world differently, offering hope and practical tools for fostering growth and harmony.
Recommended For: Parents, educators, therapists, and anyone working with children with SPD or related challenges.

This book was informative and helpful as a parent (especially a parent to 4 very different children with different needs & strengths). Def recommend to parents and educators everywhere!

Such a great book. I think if you are a parent you will defenitely benefit from this. The other books are good too

This books was instrumental in helping my better understand my special needs son. I have recommended it to several other parents in the special need community. Our sons therapist uses it now and has since taught a class on the information in this amazing book!

What a very fascinating book. Sometimes it was a bit heavy but it is still a very worthwhile book to read. Thank you for sharing the information!

As a mother of two children with sensory issues this has been a really helpful reference.
While it doesn't look as "glamourous" as some of the newer tittles on the market for this subject, please do not over look it and it has a wealth of information.
A must have for any ADHD, Autism and any other sensory issues.

I can clearly see the informational value in this book, but it wasn’t what I expected as a parent wanting some insight. The marketing was geared to parents, but it read more like a textbook. As a mom I would prefer something more conversational and shorter. This felt like homework. I think it should be marketed more as a resource for professionals in education, health and childcare. Having said that I did learn quite a bit. The language is easy to read, and the use of example scenarios was helpful. I was grateful for the charts and sections that allowed me to skim over parts that either didn’t pertain to my situation or felt repetitive. It was well organized.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for my digital copy.

I understand that this book is not for distribution, but when you watermark every single page, it not only tells me that you don't trust me, it takes the entire document impossible to focus on completely. Therefore, that is the reason why I gave the rating I did. Do not watermark the entire book!

Very insightful and educational! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a complimentary copy of this book.

As a DHH educator, I often work with students who have SPD and many of the symptoms in the book rang true for me. This is considered such a vital resource for professionals in the special education/physical therapy and occupational therapy world, and I was glad to be able to read and review a new edition.
I hope this resource continues to be available for professionals and parents who may find it useful for years to come.

Thank you NetGalley for providing this copy. The book was very informative. However, the book was similar to Lindsey Biel’s. Not a book you’d prefer to read in one seat, though.

This is far from the "bible" for Sensory Processing Disorder and/or Autism but, it is extremely helpful to parents looking to understand their children more than they did upon opening this book. Ultimately, it's about effort in seeking knowledge and simply knowing your child in ways that outsiders never will. Like other parenting books, these pages are merely suggestions. No one child/person is alike. That being said, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone searching for help in knowing how to best approach different coping mechanisms.

I received this complimentary ARC from the publisher, courtesy of NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
I have purchased previous editions of this book and kept it as a reference for information and ideas. I highly recommend this to parents and professionals who are looking for additional advice.

This is a must-read for anyone working in the field of children with special needs! It is easy to understand and very applicable to practice. This was originally recommended to me by my Occupational Therapist when I was a teacher and I continue to recommend it to other people in the field.
