This book was so good. About halfway through I was a bit annoyed because it was really predictable, but I ended up loving the tropes and the transformation in both of my main characters.
I voluntarily agreed to read and honestly review this book.
I want to thank the author for this book. It has really made me think, and I have decided that I should try to listen to an audio book. It was interesting to learn that the people who do this are actual real people also. Of course I am going to have to remind myself to not dissect the voice(s), and try to figure out what their real life story is like. LOL
Confession: I just finished Thank You for Listening today. I have three other RomComs I need to review that I've read in the last few weeks. Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed these other RomComs. But Thank You for Listening? This is the RomCom I've been waiting for. Loved, loved, loved it.
It's sweet. It's sexy. It's laugh-out-loud funny. It has great characters and witty dialogue. And it's so much fun - Ms. Whelan isn't afraid to have her characters point out the romance tropes as they happen.
The characters are wonderful, especially the three romantic leads - Sewanee, Nick, and Brock. And Sewanee's relationship with her grandmother really hit home for me - my dad died from Alzheimer's almost eight years ago- and some of the moments Sewanee and Blah share were extremely poignant and heartbreaking.
This gives the audience a fun glimpse into the world of audiobooks and their creation. And I recommend listening to the audiobook for this one - it's narrated by the author, and her performance is just spot on. I will not only continue to read more books authored by Ms. Whelan, but I will also seek out her narrations, too.
I enjoyed Thank You for Listening so much. Highly, highly recommend this one!
I received a reviewer copy of Thank You For Listening from the publisher Avon and Harper Voyager from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
What It’s About: Sewanee Chester had a significant accident that has left her without an eye and has halted her acting career. However, she has made a new career for herself as an audiobook narrator. Though she has always said no more romance audiobooks, she gets roped into leading a panel to discuss romance audiobook narrator and books in Vegas. While in Vegas, she has an amazing one night stand before returning home where she is offered a deal narrating a famous romance author's final book. She would never consider it under normal circumstances, but her grandma is falling deeper into dementia and needs more support, so she takes the gig, and begins talking to her colleague narrator, Brock McKnight.
What I Loved: Oh gosh, this book is really something. I loved the chemistry between our two audiobook authors. I loved the behind the scenes of the audiobook industry. I loved Sewanee's personal story of dealing with her injury and the impact it has had on her life while also dealing with the two family members she is closest with being farther away (her mother is physically away and her grandma is suffering from dementia), and the ramification it has on her. I loved the female friendships. I also loved her mom and her mom's boyfriend, I would low key read a book about them to be honest.
What I didn’t like so much: I felt at times this book had too many characters to keep track of and some kind of fell to the background and seemed unnecessary (though I am only thinking of two characters). I didn't like the romance conflict, I thought it was ridiculous, but it was overcome fairly quickly. Otherwise, I enjoyed this a lot.
Who Should Read It: People who love romance books. People who love audiobooks. People who love stories of characters working to overcome trauma and grief.
Summary: A story of an audiobook narrator learning to accept herself while also finding love.
As a fan of Julia Whelan as a narrator , I couldn't wait to get my hands on this ebook!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyager, for an ebook copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was also lucky enough to get an audiobook copy , which of course was a double bonus for me.
This book has made it to my favorites list hands down! I loved the MC , Sewanee and her bestie and their whole success story. I've always wondered what it takes to be an audiobook narrator, of course knowing it wasn't as simple as reading a book, and this book gave a little insight into the behind the scenes, with fun little snipets of actors discussing the script. This was a Romance, Chick lit, survivor, story about a woman who makes the most of the hand she has been dealt. I loved all of the secondary characters, especially her grandma , Blah blah... oh so many fun side stories in this book. It is definitely one to read and re-read!
Any audio book narrated by Julia Whelan is done with brilliance. So to part listen thanks to #prhaudio and read along thank to #netgalley is a joy.
The story was so interesting and had me sucked in from the start. Having the main character be an audio book narrator made it hard to separate the story from thinking it was based on Julia's real life. Thankfully the ending author's note set that straight that Shawnee is 100% not her, yet I think audio book listeners would love to know her real life story as she narrates SO MANY books.
Although at times predictable, this story still ran smooth as silk with great tension and pacing. Shawnee was a character to root for and I enjoyed this tale.
So good! I listened to this and read on kindle. Definitely recommend audio because the narrator is the author. However, I found the text messages and alternate methods of communication were better in print to understand. I think the whole story just worked. The romance was mistaken identity and done really well. How much Swanee changed throughout was perfect. Definitely recommend this one!
I started this book in print and quickly switched to audio and loved it! Highly recommend audiobook version of this book. Voices are great and it was fun to get a behind the scenes peek at audiobook narrating and the romance book genre. Loved the story and didn’t want to stop listening! 4.5 stars rounded up. Thank you to Avon books and net galley for ARC in exchange for my honest review.
When I saw that Julia Whelan had written another book, I was so excited to read this book. I love her narration of audiobooks and all of her voices that she brings to books as she is reading the story.
Thank you for listening is the story of Sewanee Chester and her life as an audiobook narrator. Sewanee used to be an actress when an accident changed all of that. She has moved over to the audiobook world and is famous for her many voices and romance stories that she reads. She is asked to read along with Brock McKnight on one of the best author's books. As she is reading with him, she realizes he might not be exactly who he said he was.
While I enjoyed the premise of the book and loved the narration by Julia Whelan, there were parts of this book that dragged for me. Before the halfway point, there were multiple times I wondered if this book just wasn't for me. To be 100% honest, if someone else had written the book, I might have put the book down. I felt like the true story didn't start until about halfway through the book. From that point on, I was excited to listen and couldn't wait to see what happened. I was able to bounce between the eARC and the audiobook for this one, so that was exciting to hear the way Whelan portrayed the characters both in text and in audio.
Fans of Julia Whelan's audiobook narration will be highly pleased with her dynamic ability to write an engaging novel, as well. Thank You for Listening follows Sewanee Chester, audiobook narrator and survivor of several incidents of life not going as planned. From a life-altering run-in with a skydiving plane to needing to care for her rapidly deteriorating grandmother, Sewanee knows what it means to have to change course and adapt to whatever curve balls come her way. In a life where it seems like most things spin out of control, Sewanee tries to take charge of anything that she can, such as abiding by her self-imposed rul of NOT narrating romance audiobooks. But when a proposition to narrate a certain audiobook will pay her more money than she's ever seen in her life, Sewanee may need to just let go of what she thinks she wants and see where the road takes her. And the flirty male-narrator constantly texting her doesn't hurt either.
Whelan may be more well-known for her captivating audiobook narration so far, but her writing style has proven she will be a force to be reckoned with in the author-realm, also. Likable characters, relatable life circumstances, and interesting plot lines keep the reader wanting more. The moral of this story of learning to accept yourself before expecting others to accept you is applicable to everyone, no matter where they are on life's journey.
I thought this was very well done. Sewanee is a fascinating protagonist. I loved her backstory and the relationship with her grandma. The small glimpse we got into the audiobook narrating world was interesting too. I would've liked even more of it, but that's probably a different book.
My only real complaint is I wanted more romantic scenes with the leads, but I did enjoy what we got.
Julia Whelan is a wonderful narrator too and added so much life to her characters with her voice. I will probably seek out other books she's narrated now.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my review copy!
Truly genuine story w/the perfect narration!
I'm not sure if I loved this even more due to my obsession with audiobooks, but it was SO well written. I truly believe it could only be told and done justice by someone in the audio industry. I shed a few tears, but mostly laughed, especially during moments I could personally relate to.
This was such a clever and original story, I wish everyone could read it, but please grab the audiobook if possible, you'll be able to appreciate it even more. My cheeks are still sore even hours later, and I will definitely be reading this one again soon!
I LOVED this book. The characters were so well written. I loved Swan, I loved Blah, I loved Adaku (I’m starting a petition to read her book!). I really found myself identifying with Swan’s arc - not the particulars, but more of accepting and loving themselves. Swan and Blah’s relationship was fun and heartbreaking to read, and Adaku and Swan’s friendship was goal-worthy.
I really enjoyed the nods through the book to romance readers and audiobook listeners. And the romance(s) were so well thought out and fun and real, but also not. I really enjoyed Julia Whelan’s first book but this one became an instant favorite.
This was a delightful read by one of my favorite audiobook narrators. I loved it from start to finish. Julia Whelan wrote a “love” story that didn’t feel quite like your typical rom-com. I enjoyed to peek behind the curtain to the world of audiobook narration.
Not only is Julia Whelan the queen of audiobooks but she's also an excellent writer! This book made me laugh, blush, swoon, and tear up. A true joy to read.
Swan narrates audiobooks. Mostly fiction. When a project comes her way that would require her to pick up her abandoned romance narrator alias, Sarah Westfield, she really doesn't want to. She's sick of the HEA. It's not real. That's not how life works. Right? Ugh. Because of her relationship with the author she decides to do it along with a male narrator, Brock McKnight. He's funny, charming, and has a sexy voice. What could happen?
If you're on the hunt for your next book, I recommend picking up Julia Whelan's Thank You for Listening! It follows Sewanee, a jaded audiobook narrator who reluctantly agrees to dual narrate a romance novel. She's been through enough trauma to believe that happy endings are pure fantasy. But, as she grows closer to her new co-worker, she starts to rethink her stance.
Usually you won't find me advocating for a heroine who slanders romance novels, but I really liked the way Whelan showed how it stemmed from Sewanee's own feelings about the happy future she had once envisioned for herself being lost. She can't let go of that pain, and Whelan shows her journey to recognizing that she's still hurting and learning to open up to the idea of healing as being complicated and rewarding in equal measure. All of this is tempered with excellent banter and humor woven throughout.
This book sits on that line of women's fiction and romance, and I thought it balanced both really well. I don't want to add too much about the hero (he's a bit mysterious after all), but let's just say there's an Irish accent involved so I was sold! And I loved the parallels Whelan created between him and Sewanee to allow them to connect.
If you've ever wondered what narrating looks like behind the scenes, this book offers an insightful glimpse! Whelan (as a narrator herself) was able to weave in fun facts as well as real issues that narrators face in the industry—such as the emergence of AI and the importance of having human narrators. On that note, the author also narrates the audiobook version and does a fantastic job if you'd prefer to read that way!
One character I haven't mentioned yet is Sewanee's grandmother, Blah. Their bond is incredibly important to Sewanee, especially as she watches Blah's increasing struggles with dementia, and I loved their hilarious and meaningful moments on page together.
This book was enjoyable for me. I am late in writing my review but I just loved it so much.
I think the author has created a perfect setting for a romance story and the way Brock and Sewanee. Even the characters’ names seem so fitting.
They have to narrate a book together and more so; it is a romance book, one with many steamy scenes.
Sewanee is such a great female character. I love her resilience and how she stands up for herself and also how emotional and vulnerable she is inside.
Her interactions with her family and friends just bring it all to the surface even more.
As for Brock, he is a sweetheart for me. He definitely won me over in a short time with his wit and humour.
I think this is one of those books where you cannot cease reading because you just don’t want to finish it.
I dare you to read it, especially if you love audiobooks.
Great read and loved to hear all the behind the scenes about recording audiobooks. This was a little triggering for me because I just lost my grandmother and Sewanee's grandmother is dealing with developing Alzheimer's which has affected my family greatly. I thought the connection between Sewanee and Nick was a bit predictable, but loved the book all the same. Julia Whelan is a great writer and an excellent audiobook narrator.
I firmly believe that this is The Book that Julia Whelan was destined to write. It was such a genuine delight, and no one would be able to write about this industry quite as well (or as charmingly) as Whelan. I would read this over and over again for the first time if I could.
Julia Whelan is one of my favorite audiobook narrators so I was excited for the opportunity to read this book. It was a cute story featuring a female audiobook narrator and her relationship with a fellow male narrator as they work on a project together. Without giving too much away, it was fun to see how their connection develops, and it was an enjoyable story!
