I enjoyed the book on a personal level but I would not recommend this for the classroom or a school library. There is too many sexual innuendos that some students might not understand. I liked the idea of the main character trying to overcome a disability and discover who she is though. The story kept me engaged.
GOSH this was so good 🥹 Definitely one of the best and most heartfelt contemporary romances I've read in a while!
I was completely invested in the many different subplots, all of which were so well-written and developed and incredibly realistic. The family dynamics, coping with the decline of a loved one who has Alzheimer's disease, forging career paths... wow.
The cast is highly memorable and I loved the main leads. The banter over texts and emails had me gushing like a fangirl, while the smutty recordings made me LOL.
Yet there are also plenty of emotional moments here as the author takes us through Swan's trauma and grief. I wanted to cry with her (can't recall if I did) when she broke down and I felt her pain so deeply. Nick was equally fleshed out and I really enjoyed all their conversations, from the light-hearted to the heavy.
I am not an audio person so I read a physical copy, but I really enjoyed being taken into the world of audiobooks and learning about how it all works behind the scenes. This book is also a wonderful ode to the romance genre.
An absolute gem and delight indeed!
This story was fascinating. I love the peek in to the world of narration, written by a narrator! I love Brock a lot. My favorite part of the book was their text and email exchanges. The friendship built naturally and kept me invested in the characters. Each character in this story is so rich and complex. The story isn’t fluffy at all. Definitely not a romcom, but the romance is sincere and sweet. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC to review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this novel. Ultimately, this one did not really work for me as a reader. The tone was not what I was expecting and it was not as light or as romantic as I hoped.
I don't even know what to say: I just loved it.
I've listened to Whelan narrate other peoples' books but it was a real treat to read hers. Thank You for Listening had everything I want in a story: a lovable protagonist down on herself, a funny hunky love interest, misunderstanding hijinks, a die-hard best friend, lovely family moments, and such amazing fun dialogue that I could hear the characters' voices in my head. Swan and Nick have amazing chemistry and I just loved every single moment of them.
There's so much in this book in terms of character development too. It's brimming with it. As a LA girl, I loved seeing my city in here (finally a non-NY book!) and it's a real love letter to anyone who is a fan of romance, of audiobooks, of tropes, and texts as dialogue. The plot is pretty full too and covers a lot of ground.
I can't say enough good things about this book. In fact, even though I got a free review ebook of it, I'm going to go get myself a physical copy. This is one I want to add to my shelves and read again someday. It just felt *good* to read, even at it's hard, real-life moments. That's magic.
Note: I received a free electronic edition of this book via NetGalley in exchange for the honest review above. I would like to thank them, the publisher, and the author for the opportunity to do so.
Loved this book! Being inside the world of audiobook production was really interesting to me. The romance was intentionally predictable and that worked well. The best friend, the grandma who is both spunky and sympathetic, the author orchestrating the main character's life through her last wishes - all the perfect elements of a good romance. It's all very meta and I'm here for it.
Wow, as a debut novel this was a hit! I love seeing stories about people with disabilities. I love how real and raw their emotions are and watching them heal is so beautiful. I adored how witty this book was and was rooting for the female lead the whole time. I did feel as though it trailed off into side stories that weren't completely relevant, like sometimes I considered skipping over certain parts, but overall I really adored this book!
This is absolutely one of my favorite books I have read in recent years. I listened to it, actually - the audiobook is narrated by Julia Whelan, the author of the book and a very well-known and well-respected audiobook narrator. This has quickly become my most recommended book of 2022/2023. The main character's journey is explored in a way that does great justice to the character's overall arc. I was rooting for her the entire time. I have not always been a fan of books that fall within a "rom-com" type genre, but I absolutely loved that this book took several of the tropes you see in that genre and turns them on their heads. I will read anything Julia Whelan writes! This story was mesmerizing and I would love to see it turned into a movie one day.
This is a book of fiction but I loved the glimpse of the behind the scenes of an audiobook narrator. The story was raw and emotional – with struggles of relationships, family and career. I loved following along Sewanee, she is a relatable character and the character development was excellent. There was romance but this is more of a story about dealing with the ups and downs of life. Overall I really enjoyed it!
I absolutely loved this book. It hooked me and kept me turning pages until I was done. Finished it in two days! The character development was strong, and the premise was unique enough that it didn't feel like anything else I've read.
I really enjoyed this one. It was fun that Sewanee is an audiobook narrator. I thought this was so well written. I will definitely read more by her!
This is the second title by Julia Whelan that I have had the pleasure of reading, and I am such a major fan of her narrations of some of my favorite books. To me, this woman can do no wrong!
Such a cute romance and such a great premise. I love the idea of the initial meet cute and loved even more the way their story evolved after. I want to get this on audibook to relisten!
As an audiobook listener I have to say I’m curious about the production behind the books and how it works. While Thank You for Listening doesn’t go really deep into this process, but I loved the little glimpses we did get.
Sewanee was such an interesting character. We slowly get to know her and the accident that changes her life. She wanted to be an actress, but that changed and she ended up narrating audiobooks. Romance isn’t her thing, but when an author she works for requests her for the last book she can’t say no when it can offer the money she needs. Sewanee grows a lot in this book. I loved seeing her start thinking about what she wants and what the accident did to her. It doesn’t define her and I love that she realizes that. She’s stronger than she realizes and can do anything she puts her mind to.
The romance in this book is an interesting one and it’s one I don’t want to talk too much about, because I truly believe this is one you need to experience yourself. I will add that I loved that Sewanee and this man get to know each other through text messages and emails. Having these elements in books always makes me really happy. It added some lightness to some heavier things and I feel that both characters were able to share a bit more this way.
Besides the romance and Sewanee’s character development, this book is filled with an amazing cast of side characters. Her amazing best friend and grandmother really stole the show at times. Thank You for Listening made me laugh, cry, and the ending was very satisfying. The only thing that bugged me in this book was how romance books were talked about. Even in the end when she said she might continue with romance it still felt like it was a frowned upon genre.
I thought this would be romance but ended up being more in the women’s fiction lane. That’s fine, but I thought it was romance.
I really enjoyed the characters and the story overall. Big content warning for dementia—this is a primary plot point. There was a moment I was in tears because of a conversation our main character has with her grandmother, whose health is rapidly declining.
It was fun to read about two audiobook narrators as well.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Things I loved:
🎧 Sense of humor
🎧 Opening scene in the airplane 😂
🎧 Banter between characters
🎧 Blah and her happy hours
🎧 Multiple tropes within the story
Thank You for Listening was a fun book to try as an audiobook as the story itself follows the industry of publications, audiobooks in this case, which helped give even more life to the characters. Nick and Sewanee have more connections than they know of, making this one of those meant-to-be stories from the beginning.
Loved the building of the characters throughout the story. It was not a swept me off my feet type of story but a real one with life challenges affecting your day-to-day life. Sewanee is on a new career path after going through a traumatic accident. She has been learning to find her path and maintain relationships and support her grandma along the way. Loved her relationship with Blah (Grandma).
I don’t want to share much because going into the story blind with the main characters is the best way to go at it! Highly recommended the audio version.
🎧 Question: Do you listen to audiobooks? If so, what speed do you use?
I (Yani) only listen between 1.5x - 1.8x 😅
can’t do slower than that!
Feelings are temporary. They stick around as long as you believe in them and then they're gone, waiting to be believed in again. If they were permanent, then we'd only have to say I love you once and be done with it for the rest of our lives.
Regret haunts you for the rest of your life. It’s like a ghost that refuses to leave your house.
You think you can get through life avoiding regret, avoiding failure. Spoiler alert! Life is regret. Life is failure. But like that ghost, you’ll learn to live it it. Because failure makes success matter.
Take the risk. Fail. And let regret come along for the ride. A passenger… not the driver. I’ve seen too many people get into mid-life crisis territory, wondering where the time went and why they didn’t do anything with it.
We break in many different ways, but it doesn’t mean we are broken.
i went into this story with no expectations whatsoever and came out of it with a whirlwind of emotions!
granted, some of that came from the subject matter — specifically in sewanee's relationship with her ailing grandmother. when something like that hits home with you and is written in such a beautiful, believable way that's also equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking, it says something spectacular about the author and how they write said character's voice.
sewanee is not a perfect heroine in the story, yet it's in her imperfections that she comes to feel far more human than written. she physically wears her insecurities and guilt and while you feel for her, you can also grow aggravated with her for how she carries herself. you watch her navigate her life, wanting her to be more than what she feels is hindering her, and yet you also understand it enough to feel for her. i came from it rooting her on as she enjoyed the ups of life and joy while also gasping for air during the lows of the book.
her support group in the form of her friend and her grandmother's ragtag, mischievous girl gang— as well as her growing feelings for a voice actor she gets to work alongside of, makes for a romance that might be lacking in steam, but has plenty of romance and heart to balance it out in a well-rounded tale.
Thank You for Listening was much deeper and thought provoking than I expected. Honestly, I started reading because I thought it would be a light romance. I would actually categorize the book as more women's fiction than contemporary romance. I know Whelan as an audiobook narrator, so I loved that the main character has the same career. The romance was very sweet too and Brock was an excellent love interest. The book did drag at times, especially toward the end, but I still really liked it.
A really fun read for a beach vacation. There were lots of behind the scenes stuff about audiobooks, publishing, and romance to keep it from being too light but enough of the other stuff to keep it interesting.
I never knew I needed a book about audiobook narrators, and yet this was one of my favorite romances in a long time. Great characters and an interesting look into publish and audiobook recording.
