This made me cry so hard! It follows the perspective of Sewanee, who after a tragic accident had to make several life changes including a new career. Now she is an audiobook narrator and a popular one at that she is asked to work on a project with one of the most infamous romance narrators in the genre. As the project gets under way you see Sewanee struggle and come to terms with past mistakes, loss, and acceptance but also moving forward finding joy and even love in this new life. This book I found so impactful in several ways, emotional it was definitely hard hitting, and I loved following the whole journey. Sewanee was a relatable character and I felt so connected to her as she worked hard and overcome insecurities, found happiness and discovered a new friendship. There were several side characters as well as the love interest that took this book to even higher levels with their support, comfort, and sometimes tough love. The romance in this book was spot on with a slow build with a You’ve Got Mail type trope in it, which is one of my favorites. This is a slower paced read; the writing was great. The setting of the story and the background information was detailed enough to make a significant effect without feeling like I was getting info dumped. This book has been one of my favorites this year and I highly recommend giving this book a try. Make sure you keep a box of tissues next to you.
Trigger warnings: Tragic accident
I received this advanced ebook, via Netgalley. This review is my own honest opinion.
This was a really sweet romance that I enjoyed reading. The characters were great and I loved the literary aspects. I would definitely recommend!
Julia Whelan is one of my favorite audiobook narrators and this book was such a fun read. It followed the life of a narrator and gave us an inside look into the life. The romance was fun and the characters well fleshed out. I really enjoyed this book. Recommend!
Thank you to the publishers Avon / HarperCollins for giving me a chance to review THANK YOU FOR LISTENING by Julia Whelan.
Loved this author since I read her fiction novel about an American student studying at Oxford in England.
Loved the premise of an audiobook female narrator and a male romance novelist.
Wonderful characters. Their problems were believable. And loved the ending.
This is the story of a former actress turned successful audiobook narrator—who has lost sight of her dreams after a tragic accident—and her journey of self-discovery, love, and acceptance when she agrees to narrate one last romance novel.
Holy shit I absolutely adored this book. I wasn't expecting much, to be honest. But wowza, this one grabbed me and did not let go. This one just made me FEEEEEL. Like, all the feelings. I can't explain it, just go read it. I promise you will not be disappointed.
I cannot wait to see what Julia Whelan comes up with next.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I loved this romance about audiobook narrators. It was a great mix of rom com but with some heavy topics as well. I definitely recommend this book if you like audiobooks and secret identity of the hero since she was texting the hero in the beginning but didn't know it was him.
“It’s not ridiculous. It’s not bullshit. It is possible. It’s not fantasy or reality. A happily ever after is built by both. Together. Over a lifetime.”
Oh man. Julia Whelan is one of my (everyone’s?) favorite narrators and she is an amazing author too. I enjoyed this one SO MUCH. I had to listen to the audio of course and it was so good. Loved the storyline, I laughed out loud several times. The dialogue was relatable, there’s nothing worse than stiff dialogue and this was perfect! Obsessed with allll the tropes that got squeezed in to make one fabulous story
Loved this book - absolutely the perfect romance novel! Julia Whelan writes vivid, believable characters you can root for as you read. It was such a delight to spend time with Sewanee, Adaku, and Brock McKnight : ) Whelan's dialogue is snappy and quick and kept me engaged throughout the book. Read this if you're looking for an inside look into the audiobook world or if you're just looking to spend some time with a group of people trying to get it right as they go through life. Highly recommend!
Another great book by Julia Whalen . I really likeD the narration and story was captivating I can’t wait until she published another book
I laughed, I cried, I just wanted to live inside this story. I'm also a sucker for the "behind the scenes" book/audiobook/awards plot lines. I just love it's gone full circle.
Just released yesterday on August 2nd, Julia Whelan’s Thank You for Listening has already gotten rave reviews and I’m going to add another one to the pile! This romance book about an audiobook narrator written by a real-life audiobook narrator is a book lover’s dream read that I can’t recommend enough!
This book is the perfect story for anyone who loves books (especially romance)! Whelan, who is a popular audiobook narrator herself, gives readers an inside look into the world of audiobook narration and what it’s like to work in the publishing industry.
While this book is branded as a romance book, it also pokes fun at the genre with its HEAs and tropes while embodying those same qualities. However, it doesn’t match the exact trajectory of classic romance novels. The book mixes in elements from Women’s Fiction and other genres to craft an entertaining and touching story about a woman trying to find her way through life when life keeps throwing obstacles her way.
For any romance lovers out there, this one’s for you and I, for one, cannot wait to see what Whelan will write next!

Thank you #Avon #HarperVogager and #Netgalley for early access to this ebook. I love Julia Whelan and how she allowed the reader to peek behind the curtain of audiobook narration. What was a hit for me was the character of Sewanee, who was well fleshed out. I also liked the banter between Sewanee and Nick. What could have been a little better for me was one fewer storyline throughout the story. There were lots of different aspects of the story to unpack. I think I may have preferred this on audiobook, and I know it will be enjoyed by many readers.
Sewanee is an actress turned audiobook narrator due to a skydiving-related injury. Her injury did not only affect her career path, but it also affected her relationships with others and how she views herself. This becomes an ongoing theme throughout the entire book.
One night Sewanee is out celebrating Adaku's first million dollar job as an actress, when she meets Nick. They spend the night together with the mindset that they will never see each other again.
Sewanee's grandmother has Alzheimer's. Sewanee wants her to stay at her current facility because any sense of normalcy and consistency helps keep her grandma comfortable. The only problem is that she would not be able to afford the levels of care she would need. An opportunity for her to narrate a romance book with Brock McKnight. They begin to chat and grow closer together. At an award show Sewanee discovers that Nick is June's (the author of the audiobook she is narrating) nephew. Soon after she also finds out that he is Brock McNight. She is shocked and pushes him away, even though she lied to him about being a book publisher named Alice. He also reveals to her that he had actually planned to get in good with her so that he could date Adaku.
I think that the story was interesting, but in my opinion, I felt like there was too much conflict. I loved the I-thought-I-was-talking-to-two-people-but-I-was-actually-just-talking-to-one-person-the-whole-time trope. If it were just that and one other plot line then both plot lines could be fleshed out. It was almost overwhelming how much was going on and at the end it just felt like the book sped up significantly after they found out who they really were. It went from surprise to I don't want to talk to you anymore to yay we are together to engagement.
The author, Julia Whelan, is a beloved audiobook narrator. It's obvious that she has been paying close attention to the romance novels that she's narrated because she nailed it with this book!
The main character, Sewanee, is a well-established audiobook narrator (write what you know!). While she got her start in romance, she doesn't really believe in it and has steered clear of the genre. However, she finds herself in need of a fast influx of cash to help pay for her grandmother's care and this means a recent offer is one she can't refuse. She's going to narrate an authors last book with Brock McNight, a romance narrator wit ha swoon voice.
While they don't let in person, they slowly connect over different mediums 9email, text, voice text, and eventually phone calls). There's lots of fun references to all the romance tropes. And they live a few out in their own romance journey. Sewanee and Brock both have some personal issues to overcome (I love when the main characters grow) before they can really connect. I loved this book and it's emotional range (laughter and tears were involved). I highly recommend listening to the audiobook version if you are an audiobook listener. The author does an amazing job of narrating it and capturing the character's personalities and emotions.
Thanks to the publisher for a copy. All opinions are my own.
When I saw that Julia Whelan had a new booking coming out I knew I wanted to read right away. Thank you to @avonbooks for kindly sending me this copy! I adored reading My Oxford Year and I love audiobooks narrated my Julia Whelan. Do to make the reading experience even better, I also listened to the audiobook, thanks to @librofm ! I enjoyed the discussions on the romance and woman’s fiction genres and the behind the scenes look in the audiobook narrator world. The banter between the two main characters, Sewanee and Nick, and the love and heartaches of Sewanee’s family had me laughing out loud and also tearing up. It was a fun change from my normal historical fiction reading. I also enjoyed The Venetian setting in Las Vegas at the beginning of the book as we stayed there last year.
I know you’ve heard of audiobook 👑queen👑 Julia Whelan, but have you heard of author, Julia Whelan?? If you have yet to pick up one of her books, stop what you are doing and read this one now.
I’ve had a rocky road with romance this year, I’ve read some wildly popular books and felt very “meh” and I think this is my first 5 star romance of the year. It’s so well deserved.
There are so many tropes explored in this book, and my least favorite (possibly because I just couldn’t get into it with either of Emily Henry’s reads) was the book-within-a-book. BUT I LOVED IT! I loved all the cheesy one liners and the banter and the overplayed tropes and everything in between. I’m also going to warn you - you most likely won’t get the same experience if you don’t listen to this one on audio. After all the MC is an audiobook narrator.
Thank You for Listening was just the fall break book I needed. A heartfelt novel about second chances, love, and friendship. I devoured this novel and will read anything by Julia Whelan!
Thank you, NetGalley, for an advanced copy of this novel!
Adored this! I loved the characters, the banter, the story. Julia Whelan is so incredibly talented. I loved Sewanee and Nick and BlahBlah and the whole cast of side characters.
A book about audiobook narration by my favorite audiobook narrator? Yes, please!
This hit every mark for me. Great story, strong plot, sharp humor, witty banter, and oh, the swoon and steam! I appreciated the author’s personal perspectives on the industry woven through this fantastic work of fiction. A new favorite romance!
I absolutely love Thank You For Listening by Julia Whelan. I listen to audiobooks everyday so to get a look into the world behind the book was really interesting especialy since Julia Whelan is an amazing narrator. The characters of Sewanee and "Brock" were written so well, you really get absorbed in to their story. The twist of who Brock really is made the plot really interesting. I would definitely reccommend this boook.
