This was another fantastic read by Megan Miranda, another mystery that I had to know what was going on, and was compelled to continue to turn the pages, and find out what was going on. It was amazing, and I couldn't get enough!
The idea of not being able to trust your neighbours? That's kinda a scary thought, because your home is where you're supposed to feel safe, and if that is surrounded by uncertainty, well, the level of safe that you feel wouldn't be as much as it should.
Oh, the twists, turns and reveals in the story of a Megan Miranda book are just so well done, they're unexpected, how they come together, but the pieces were there. It just was putting them together from a different perspective and I just love them!
The escalation of this story, and the tense moments of finding out what was going on, well, I really loved following long with Abby's story, and seeing how it ends! It was a delight to read and I had such a great time with it!
This was a fantastic read, and I've almost caught up with all of Megan Miranda's releases, yeah!
3.5 rounded down
Megan Miranda's books tend to be slow burns, but this one was just a bit too slow for me. It all unravels so quick at the end, that just didn't flow well with the slow burn in my opinion. It felt like two completely different plots that weren't even related, so I was kind of disappointed at that. I did not see the twists at the end however, which did redeem the book for me ! I don't understand why the truth just couldn't have been told, things could have been handled so different and they could have avoided so much. I do feel like there were some plot holes, or maybe it was just because the slow burn had me zoning out a bit and I missed it.
Thank you NetGalley and author for the ARC of this story i could only read when my husband was home haha. Living in a smaller town this place really felt real, as you could picture the people she was writing about as people that are in every small town.
This was such an enjoyable thriller from start to finish. I love the setting: a resort in the mountainous town of Cutter’s Pass. The characters are well-crafted and engaging. I was hooked for every twist and turn. Megan Miranda has yet to disappoint!
I loved The Last Girls by the author so I was excited to read The Last to Vanish. However, it fell short for me. I find it quite slow and it just didn't hold my interest. There were a couple of good twists but I just wasn't a huge fan of the characters or the single person POV. I found Abby, the MC, to be a little boring.
Although I didn't love this one I'd definitely try something else by Megan Miranda. Thank you so much to thr publisher for an e-galley in exchange for an honest review.
When Abigail Lovett's mother dies, she is alone. She packs up and off she goes to find her place. She comes upon Cutter's Pass in North Carolina nestled along the Appalachian Trail. At eighteen, she didn't have many options, but is given a job by Celeste, the owner of the Passage Inn. Ten years later she is still there, now now the manager and a valued member of the staff. Cutter's Pass is tourist town, especially in the Spring and Summer when hikers head out on the Appalachian Trail. Cutter's Pass has a reputation based on the fact that several hikers disappeared after staying at the Inn. The Last to Vanish was Landon West, a journalist, who was in the process of interviewing some of the people of the town to find out what happened to some of the missing hikers. His brother has arrived at the Passage Inn to try and find out what happened to Landon. Trey has some information and he is not going to give up easily until he finds out what happened to his brother. Abby is strangely attracted to Trey and wants to help him solve the mystery of not only what happened to his brother, but what happened to the others, including the original group that disappeared, "The Fraternity Four." It seems it might be hard to find out what happened with the close knit community keeping their secrets and holding them close.
I have read and enjoyed other Megan Miranda books with their suspense and twists. This one was bit slow to start and build up to that point, but about halfway into the book, the story picked up and the suspense was palpable. The mystery of what happened to the missing hikers was well done, however some of the clues were a bit too coincidental for a town that has so many secrets. I thought I had figured out who was responsible for the more recent disappearances, but I was totally off base, the culprit was someone I had not suspected at all. The original Fraternity Four had a different fate and that was the final twist that had me sitting up and dropping my jaw. Overall, this was an enjoyable story, but I wish it had not started as slowly as it did.
I enjoy a good suspenseful novel and this was an enjoyable read. I enjoyed the plot and waiting to see what would happen next.
This book was not what I expected.
The synopsis of a small mountain town having seen higher than “normal” disappearances was intriguing. Trey, a brother of one of those who disappeared, shows up in town to figure out what happened to his brother. Abby, the manager of the Inn, who has lived in the town for 10 years, does her own digging into the disappearances while trying to keep some of her secrets from being revealed.
I enjoyed the setting of this novel. It takes place in what seemed to be a remote woodsy area. The feeling of isolation added the “creep” factor to this novel. However, I felt the story was slow and a little disjointed. The “twist” and the “reveals” weren’t great. I felt a little disappointed with the ending.
I love a good mystery that takes place in the mountains at a cabin/hotel, I really liked the complexity of this story and how the twist was not at all what I expected. Megan Miranda always keeps me guessing up until the very end.
I usually enjoy Megan Miranda’s novels but this one was only okay for me. It was a very slow paced and usually thrillers are very fast paced. I found the characters boring couldn’t connect with them. Too many unlikely coincidences that I just couldn’t get past, however the twist at the end of the book rounded my rating to 3 stars.
I will still continue to read from this author as I always enjoyed their books in the past.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to review this book.
Journalist, Landon West heads to the resort town, Cutter’s Pass, to investigate a string of disappearances only to go missing himself. This one starts a bit slow, but picks up in the second half. A terrific read.
This author! This book! I love Megan Miranda’s work and this one was no different. The setting was picturesque and detailed in a way that allows readers to create the scenes so vividly. The character development was great and consistent. I was able to keep guessing to solve the mystery and when the big reveal hits I loved being able to say “I had a feeling!!” I have been recommending this one to everyone!
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was a decent thriller, Megan Miranda can be hit or miss for me and this was a little in the middle.
3.75 stars, rounded to 4. The Last to Vanish is a thriller that has a slow burn. The setting of the story, centred around a small rustic inn within a remote, touristy town in North Carolina, is beautifully created by the author. You can visualize the mountains, the trees, and the heavy atmosphere as you find out that several people who have visited the town in a span of years have gone missing. The foreboding story is told by the main character Abby, who works at the inn after moving to the town a decade before, after her mother dies. Abby is the niece of the late inn’s founder, Vincent, and she is treated like a daughter by Vincent’s widow, Celeste. As you get to know various residents of the town through Abby, you begin to question the connection between those who have gone missing, and speculate who could be unreliable and if someone from the town may have been involved. There are twists along the way, and the story has a satisfying ending.
I look forward to reading more of Megan Miranda’s books in the future.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada, Scribner/Marysue Rucci Books and Netgalley for the advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
LOVED how suspenseful it was, would definitely read again, this author is a go to one for me. can;t wait to see what she does next
This was the ultimate pairing of remote location and good character writing for me. I am a lover of thriller books and hiking, so I was hooked right off the bat, and kept turning pages well into the night. A solid 5 star.
Small-town, errie atmosphere and a number of disappearances from outsiders coming from out of town to hike towards the Appalachian trail. Soo many unanswered questions and no one is talking.
Eventho this is a slow burn megan miranda really knows how to set the tone and delivers some twists you didn't see coming.
Thank you netgalley and simon and Schuster for an eArc inexchange for an honest review.
This book was so incredible. I don't know why I was surprised as Megan Miranda is one of my most favorite authors. This lady really knows how to write a story.
This was a great one with twists and turns that I didn't see coming. The setting was a little creepy and I loved the book for it. . I liked that the book followed Abby as she was enjoyable to read about. Also it helps when the MC isn't a complete idiot. This character was relatable and genuine.
I definately enjoyed this one and of course will pre-order Megan Miranda's next book without even reading the synopsis.
I love Megan Miranda's books, so looked forward to this release. Unfortunately, The Last to Vanish didn't quite hit the mark this time. It took me a long time to work through the chapters and almost became a DNF. It's only in the last 30% of the book or so where things finally pick up enough to want to know the end.
I did like the twist (no spoilers!) but there were too many coincidences leading up to that point.
It's not going to put me off picking up another book from Megan in the future, but this one isn't one that I'd recommend to friends.
his book had me so torn - it had the twists and turns at the end but it took a long time to get there. Have you read this one?🤷🏻♀️
The Last to Vanish takes place in a small town off the Appalachian trail - a town famous for people vanishing. A close-knit community where secrets are held tight and questions are unanswered. When a brother of a recent missing person turns up in town to find out more, he befriends the hotel manager - who is also desperate to find out the truth.🤔
This book is definitely a slow burn - it has a great, eerie setting - with stories of disappearance that have you so interested. However, the middle almost lost me because it seemed to really drag on but I hung in and stayed up late reading the final pages.⭐️⭐️⭐️
