This was a very good book, the author really kept the suspense high all the way to the, surprising for me, ending. Abby Lovett came to Cutter's Pass 10 years ago, her mom had recently passed so she packed up as much as she good and set off, ending up in Cutter's Pass where she got a job at the Passage Inn and stayed. Cutter's Pass has a bit of a reputation, 6 people have come to visit and disappeared, two since Abby arrived and the other 4 some 20 plus years ago, a group of 4 friends who were determined to hike a trail and never returned. The brother of the last person to vanish, Trey West, has come to investigate his brother's disappearance on his own, though he's not a qualified investigator. Abby is drawn to Trey, whether she feels sorry for him or just wants to help ease his grief, she goes out of her way to help as much as she can. Inadvertently investigating on her own, she uncovers things that she decides not to share with Trey, things that make it look like his brother's disappearance was maybe caused by someone who wanted him to stop looking into the earlier disappearances. Abby is a resourceful and plucky character, I really liked her never give up attitude and her willingness to step in and help, not just with Trey but with anyone that needed a hand. All of the missing people do have an ending, Abby finds out and very nearly ends up missing herself. A very good book that I would recommend. Thanks to #Netgalley and #Scribner for the ARC.
Megan Miranda sure knows how to create a haunting atmosphere! This is what stood out the most for me; the creepy, haunting, secretive overall mood of the book.
If you like a slow paced story build up, this book is for you. Unfortunately for me, I prefer a story that has a quicker pace. I found it made it difficult to stay invested in the story. The characters were a little bland, there was no one I truly rooted for.
The ending is where the book redeemed itself. I didn't see the twists, and definitely felt like the last 15% if the book left me on the edge of my seat.
Although this wasn't my favourite Megan Miranda book, she remains one of my favourite authors that I'll continue to support with every book she publishes!
Cutter’s Pass, a small mountain town nestled in Northern Carolina at the foothills of the Appalachian Trail, has a mysterious history. In the past 25 years, six visitors looking for a wilderness adventure have gone missing without a trace. When an investigative journalist suddenly vanishes, it seems that nobody who chances staying at The Passage Inn is safe.
Miranda has written the type of book I really enjoy. Stories set in small towns in remote locations, missing people, puzzled law enforcement, wary guests and locals with secrets really keep me engaged and I love the opportunity to solve a case before the professionals do! This book was different because I was not expecting the residents of Cutter’s Pass to embrace their past as part of their identity, but rather expected them to try and hide it.
Readers will love Miranda’s signature twists and the tension created as the protagonist and inn manager, Abby Lovett, digs deep into the dark secrets of “the most dangerous town in the state.” I was caught up in the bouncing back and forth between Lovett’s paranoia and her claim that the townspeople are hiding something. I felt compelled to unearth the dark secrets that Lovett was set on finding; however, I was not expecting to be so uncomfortable when faced with the reality that some questions may never be answered definitively.
Like any wilderness hike, the path starts out slowly as Miranda enlightens readers on the history of the inn and the town, and then meanders as ideas are postulated and investigated, before taking sharp turns and traversing steep inclines towards solving the missing persons cases.
Miranda is a master at creating psychological suspense.
I was gifted this advance copy by Megan Miranda, Simon and Schuster Canada, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Welcome to Cutter’s Pass. A valley tucked against the base of a mountain ridge. A tourist spot. And where six people have gone missing in the last twenty-five years.
Until recently when a journalist arrives to investigate the missing, he himself goes missing too.
I was really excited to read this book. It was a small town mysteries vibe. Dark, and mysterious.
I wasn’t expecting that plot twist, and it was a little suspenseful near the end. However, it started off really slow. I love Megan Miranda’s writing, but I found this book to be a very very slow start. I felt like the characters could have had more depth to them, and the beginning could have been more suspenseful and gripping.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. The Last to Vanish publishes July 26.
Great thriller! I’ve been reading some new release thriller recently and this one is the best one yet!
Firstly, Megan Miranda is one of my favourite Authors and I always enjoy reading her books.
While I absolutely loved the setting and overall story, The last to Vanish didn’t quite do it for me.
I personally found the plot to be a little slow/repetitive with a lack lustre build up to the big reveal.
The story itself was very interesting and I did enjoy it however, I was hoping for a little more suspense. I would have also really liked closure with The Fraternity 4 and I felt we didn’t quite get that.
But, if you are looking for a fast read that will give you the chills then give The Last to Vanish a try!
Thank you Netgalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is an excellently written, twisty, disappearance mystery! It was a bit slow to start, but got really exciting once the storyline started moving a bit. Definitely grabbed me and I needed to know what happened! Releasing July 26, 2022, you don’t want to miss this one. This was probably my favourite from this author so far!
All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda is still my top suspenseful thriller of all time therefore when Miranda releases a new book I'm quick to grab it. Tourists have been disappearing for the last 25 years in Cutters Pass and they all seem to be related to the Inn where our main character, Abby works. The setting is dark and moody in this small hiking town. The locals are a close knit bunch and even Abby still feels ostracized after living there for 10 years. This was another speedy read for me as I couldn't stop reading it. The ending mostly surprised me. 4 big stars!
Thank you to Netgalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest unbiased review.
Thank you NetGalley and Megan Miranda team for allowing me to read this title in advance. As usual Megan Miranda does it again! She absolutely kept me guessing and trying to figure out how this mystery connected to Cutler Pass. The story kept me captivated and unsure the entire time. Definitely one of my top favourites of the books I’ve read by Megan Miranda. I would recommend this book, if you enjoy some of her other books. Especially if you enjoyed Such a Quiet place, it has the same type of vibes.
I absolutely loved this book! I found it hard to put down. I highly recommend reading it! You won’t be disappointed.
I wanted to love this as much as her past work. The story was intriguing but at times very slow moving. The pace picked up near the end and made the read worth the wait. Overall a good read.
Thank you Netgalley for this arc
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½⭐️ (4.5 stars)
The Last to Vanish tells the story of Cutter’s Pass, a small, mountainside town infamously known for the string of disappearing visitors spanning back decades. The protagonist, Abby Lovett, is a relatively new resident to Cutter’s Pass, or that’s what it feels like to her anyways. Despite having lived there for the last 10 years, Abby still feels like an outsider – and like the rest of town is keeping their secrets from her.
But the most recent disappearance, that of Landon West, a reporter investigating the town of Cutter’s Pass, takes the entire town by surprise, Abby included. When Landon’s brother, Trey West, shows up, trying to uncover what led to his brother’s unlikely disappearance, things hidden in Cutter’s Pass begin to shake loose. And it seems like Abby, both insider and outsider, may be the only person able to put all the clues together…
As someone who has read a number of Miranda’s previous novels, I have to say that The Last to Vanish might just be my favorite one! One thing Miranda always does incredibly well is craft the perfect location for these sorts of stories, and The Last to Vanish is no exception. Cutter’s Past is the perfect juxtaposition where this picturesque, touristy town hides a shadowy web of dark, unspoken secrets interwoven just beneath the surface.
I always love how miscommunication plays such an integral role in all of Miranda’s mysteries, it feels realistic and authentic, taking something so common and showing how it can become twisted when faced with the unthinkable. Abby has to parse the true facts from the fictitious tales that have grown in the absence of the missing hikers. This involves questioning the motives for things that have always been taken at face value in Cutter’s Pass – and stepping on many of the locals’ toes.
The twists in this one were fantastic, and I completely did not see them coming! Between the foreboding atmosphere, the unexpected plot twists, and the intriguing premise, The Last to Vanish is the perfect read for anyone craving a solid mystery/thriller. The only aspect of this story that kept me from giving it the full 5 stars out of 5 was the pacing. It did feel like it dragged a little in the middle and took its time to really start to unravel the mystery. Once it did, it was definitely worth the wait! (But I could have done with some of the rising action being slightly abbreviated.)
Thank you to the publisher, Simon & Schuster Canada/Scribner/Marysue Rucci Books, and NetGalley for providing me with an e-ARC of this book. All thoughts are my own.
A suspenseful mystery set in a small town near the Appalachian trail? Yes please! Good mysteries that feature wilderness areas and hiking are not easy to find, but Megan Miranda, an avid hiker herself, has nailed it with her latest novel THE LAST TO VANISH
Megan Miranda’s latest thriller is another engaging read, leaving the reader guessing at every turn.
Abby arrived at the Passage Inn ten years ago, trying to find a new life after her Mother’s Day. However, Cutter’s Pass is a town full of secrets, surrounding the mysterious disappearance of hikers passing through over the years. When one of the vanished’s hiker’s brother comes to town, Abby is ready to delve deeper into these secrets, ready to find the truth: what happened to the hikers and are the disappearances, spanning several decades, somehow connected?
A perfect beach read this summer!
The Last to Vanish tells the story of a small mountain town famous for disappearing visitors. The novel follows Abby, the manager at the local inn, as she tries to piece together what happened, all while avoiding suspicion from the locals who forever see her as an outsider.
The story was very intriguing; small town with a mysterious past, the imposing mountain as a spooky backdrop, and a series of disappearances to unravel. However it felt like it dragged on and I kept wishing for something exciting to happen.
I think this is my favourite read so far this year!
This atmospheric read is set in Cutter’s Pass, near the Appalachian trail. There have been many visitors over 25 years that have disappeared. Are the disappearances connected and why does everyone in the town appear to have secrets? The story is told through Abby who has worked at the local Inn for the past 10 years, not quite an outside, but not considered an insider either.
This was definitely a slow burn mystery but in the best way possible, so many twists turns and secrets revealed. Such a fun read!
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for an advanced digital ARC. All opinions in this review are my own
i absolutely loved the story and writing style. also the plot. the author didnt disappoint and its good as her other titles.
I have read a few books by Megan, and always enjoy them! This one was no different, I really liked it. The setting is in North Carolina up in the Mountains were tourist come to hike the trails, but sometimes they don't return...... The main Character in this Novel is Abby and she works at her aunts Inn and has for the past 10 years sense her mother passed aways from cancer and she had nowhere else to go. Cutter’s Pass the name of the town has always kept her just a little bit on the outside as they do with people who are not from there. It is a very close-knit town, with people who have lived there forever and they protect their own with a fierce loyalty. But 25 years ago, 4 young men went hiking and they didn't come back, and sense then 3 other people have gone missing after going out in the trials never to be seen again. Intill the bother of one of the one of the recent victims comes to the Inn to try to get some answers about what really happened to his bother out there. I really enjoyed the setting of this story; it had a great small-town Forrest feels like almost how I picture Virgin River type of town. Abby was likeable and lots of Character growth in this story I feel like in the start of the story she is just kind of surfing through life and by the end she really comes into her own and learns a lot about herself as well. The other characters, where good as well, Corey giving us is he a good or bad guy feeling till the very end. The other receptionist who works at the Inn, who kind of just came out of nowhere and left out of nowhere. Harris the likeable Phone guy, who helps out with the mysterious phone lines going down and his likeable and friendly wife. Celeste The aunt who took in Abby and gave her a new life. and everyone in the town what are they not telling, and who are they protecting. The Twist was really good in this thriller too, I did not guess it and had my self-guessing the whole way till the end and I didn’t want to put it down till I finished it! The writing was beautiful and I felt like I was really in Cutter’s Pass. Thank you net gally Simon & Schuster Canada for a free copy of this eBook for a review.
I like how Megan Miranda writes and have enjoyed her other books. The Last to Vanish is well written. I’d love escape to Cutter’s Pass. I found that it dragged a bit. but it’s worth the read. It’s not a sit on the edge of your seat thriller but it keeps you trying to figure out the connections right to the end.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada, NetGalley, and the author, Megan Miranda, for the opportunity to enjoy this ARC..
Set in the mountains of North Carolina, Abby Lovett spends her days at The Passage Inn, nestled in the tiny town of Cutter's Pass. A town that has become known as "the most dangerous" due to a string of disappearances ranging from 20 years prior, to just 3 months before the story begins.
This is my fourth Megan Miranda, I have a lot of fun reading her work! Always keeping me engaged, I finished this in two days + an hour or so. By the halfway through mark I was feeling: I just need to know what's going on!!
It's a story I've read before, but my enjoyment was heightened so greatly by the atmosphere - the seclusion of the Inn lends so well to the mystery. As well as Abby, who I found to be both charming a little unsettling (love this in protagonists.)
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for an e-book copy!
