Cutter’s pass is a mountainous camping town where people keep mysteriously disappearing. Abby is an employee working with Celeste, the owner of The Passage Inn. Trey West comes to stay looking for what happened to his brother, Landon.
The story goes back to each of the disappearances starting with the Last to Vanish, a journalist Landon West that came to The Passage Inn to investigate the previous disappearances of Alice, Farrah and the fraternity four. Each story unveils different clues that will keep you wondering-How are these disappearances interconnected or are they connected at all?
I enjoyed this thriller. Miranda’s pacing on this was excellent and the characters well developed. I was transported to The Passage Inn and the mountains. She does an excellent job of making Cutter’s Pass real. I couldn’t put it down and finished it in a day. The ending and tying it all together got a little confusing at the end, but overall a great summer read.
The Last to Vanish by Megan Miranda is an atmospheric mystery that takes place in the mountain resort town of Cutter’s Pass. While I am not usually a fan of these types of books, Miranda did a really great job creating a dark and isolated small town setting, with residents who are leery of outsiders and may be hiding a few secrets of their own.
This book was a slow burn, but there were enough clues dropped throughout that kept me intrigued even though not a lot was happening. The action really picks up in the last quarter of the book, where three bombshells are dropped. The first two had me gasping in surprise and shock, but the last one didn’t do it for me. I wasn’t really sure I even cared and that had me a little disappointed with the conclusion of some parts of the mystery.
While this was my first book by the author, I am interested in exploring her backlist, especially All the Missing Girls and The Last Houseguest.
I am a huge Megan Miranda fan, and this novel did not disappoint! I was on the edge of my seat. This is Miranda's best work yet!
Everything about Cutter's Pass changes when Trey West arrives in town looking for his brother Landon, a journalist who is the latest in a string of hikers who have gone missing in the town. Abby,, who works as the manager of the Passage Inn, finds herself helping him, despite her better judgment, and they sort back through the work Landon had done. They work backwards-starting not with the most famous disappearance of four young men but with the most recent of a female hiker. The dynamics and personalities in a resort town will resonate with anyone who has worked in this sort of environment. No spoilers makes this difficult to review but know that Miranda does a good job with amping up the tension and dropping clues that, to be honest, don't help a lot with figuring it out! Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. It's a fast read her fans will appreciate.
As Megan Miranda's novels often do, this book is no different, leaving the reader turning pages, with the twists and turns. This novel is set in a North Carolina mountain resort. While the town has more to offer than their infamous reputation, guests are drawn due to others having disappeared over 25 years. As this mystery continues, all soon becomes evident, but it kept me guessing until the end. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this e-ARC. in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Whew it was slow going in the beginning. For the first half of the book, I had a difficult time sticking with it. It did pick up but I'm not sure everyone will make it through the beginning. I love all the suspects and not knowing "who dunnit". The small town environment also added to the mystery. I liked how it ended up being unique but it was also far-fetched at times.
I was a little disappointed by this book. I have read all MM books and loved each one. I felt like the mountain setting has been doing so much lately. It was predictable to have someone disappear into the mountains. I hope the next one will be better.
Megan Miranda has done it again! The Last to Vanish is a fast-paced, atmospheric, twisty novel that will draw readers in from the first page. The story follows Abigail who fell into a job managing an upscale resort along Cutter's Pass. She's always felt like an outsider. When the town's history of mysterious disappearances draws national attention again when a journalist investigating said disappearances vanishes herself. The journalist's brother comes looking for answers and Abigail begins to wonder how well she actually knows her neighbors. This is one twisty ride!! And the writing is beautiful truly painting the picture of the Appalachian woods and nature at it's finest. Highly recommended to anyone looking for an atmospheric thriller.

Ten years ago Abigail Lovett came to the small town of Cutter’s Pass near the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina. She got a job at the small cozy resort managing The Passage Inn that she now loves and calls home. Cutter’s Pass is an outdoorsy haven offering all the the essentials and fun for hiking the Appalachians. However, unlike many of the other towns nestled throughout the Appalachians, Cutter’s Pass is plagued with a horrible mysterious past where hikers go missing. When a journalist comes to write a story about those mysterious disappearances and then vanishes himself Abigail takes it upon herself to figure out the truth. There’s just one problem with that a lot of this small town sees her as an outsider.
The Last To Vanish was a cozy atmospheric thriller that sucked me right in from the very first line. It’s a eerie read chocked full of small town secrets and scandals. The attention to detail and setting was quite captivating and had me not wanting to put it down. The strong female lead in this one was also a plus and I loved her determination to find the truth no matter what. As you all know by now I love a good thriller and mystery. One thing that makes a good thriller to me is when you don’t actually figure it out until the end. I can honestly say I never guessed the who or the why before it happened. Overall a very solid thriller and I am looking forward to reading more of this author’s work.
Megan Miranda is back with her latest mystery, The Last to Vanish!
In The Last to Vanish, we find Abigail Lovett, Abby, working in Cutter’s Pass at the local inn. Cutter’s Pass is haunted by a series of disappearances over the years. A journalist, Landon West, appears at the inn, asking questions, digging around, until he too goes missing. Then, Landon’s brother shows up, trying to find some answers as to what happened to Landon.
What caused all of these disappearances? Does Abby know her fellow townspeople as well as she thinks she does?
Well, this was my first Megan Miranda book, and I have a bit of a mixed reaction. The first 50-66% of the book is so, so, so slow. I kept putting the book down. It took me several extra days to read this book, because I just could not get into it. I even had to put it down, read a couple of other books, and come back to it.
The book does really pick up during the last half. There is a twist that I didn’t see coming which personally I loved (although I know some reviewers will be angry at this familiar trope).
There is one portion of the book where there were too many extreme coincidences. Seriously, what are the odds that my car would not start, I just happened to borrow a ride, discover a keychain, immediately identify a random key from a storage facility, and then as luck would have it the owner would just randomly allow me to view their records (which conveniently just so happened to be stored in a physical book)?
Why would a storage facility not have a computer?
In my opinion (for what that’s worth), the book would have been more engaging if it flashed to each individual disappeared person. It could even fade to black at the end of each section until leading up to a big reveal at the end.
As to my overall rating, the first half of the book is 2 stars. The second half of the book would be 5 stars. This would average 3.5 stars. So rounding comes into play for those of you who are mathematically challenged. In this case, I am going to round down to 3 stars because The Last to Vanish didn’t pick up until well into the second half.
Overall, I am looking forward to reading more from Megan Miranda!
*Thanks, NetGalley, for a free copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest opinion.
First ever Megan Miranda reader here - and this book was an absolute fun ride!
Enter a small sleepy town, with locals who are suspicious of outsiders, gorgeous hiking trails and people who have gone missing over the years. I just loved the setting for the book - Cutters Pass, an entrance to the Appalachian trail (a place I would love to explore, but sans the potential murdered but definitely missing visitors).
Abby moved to town after the death of her mother looking for a new home and a place to belong. She doesn't expect to get caught up in the latest mystery thats brought not so good publicity to this small town. There's a lot to enjoy in The Last to Vanish.
Miranda has a gift for creating a visual though words. I felt like I was on the trail and walking alongside Abby in this atmospheric tale. With 7 gone missing over the decades and a cast of hometown characters, who would you trust? There were definitely a few shady characters! Over the course of this read, I was stumped. Was it a local? Or someone stopping into town? Were the cases related? So many questions - I was locked in - furiously reading and thoroughly enjoying every minute. And at the end - I caught myself talking to Abby (a definite sign I was fully vested in the outcome!)
Many thanks to Megan Miranda, NetGalley and Scribner books for this magnificient suspenseful tale. With red herrings and mysteries within mysteries, this is a book for mystery lovers. Thank you for introducing me to an author I cant wait to read again!
This was my first Megan Miranda book, but it certainly won’t be my last!
A chilly story that will keep you guessing until the very end, The Last to Vanish is a thriller you won’t want to miss.
THE LAST TO VANISH
MV Rating: 7/10
•After multiple weird disappearances happen in this small North Carolina town near the Appalachian trail, Abby tries to break in from the fringe to break the case.
•This really felt like a comfort thriller to me - it’s got mystery, it’s got suspicious characters with seemingly good intentions, it’s got a small town that protects its own.
•in that same vein, I kind of figured out some of the twists about midway, but it didn’t ruin the book for me at all.
•This is a sure winner for fans of Lisa Jewell, or Lucy Foley.
Thank you to Scribner and Marysue Rucci Books for the advanced access to this story!
Wow! What a good read! I started this and finished it within 2 days! I love when I find a book like that. This is the first book I have read by Megan Miranda, but it won't be my last! I have heard of her books often from friends/coworkers and finally took the chance to read one! Great book! 5/5 stars.
The Last to Vanish: A Novel by Megan Miranda is set in a nice, small-town environment. The story started off slow, but the disappearances were interesting to read about and try to figure out what would happen next. I liked the main character, Abby. I will read more from this author. I enjoyed her writing style for the most part and the story elements.

This was a mysterious, atmospheric mystery revolving around a hiking trail that multiple people (decades apart) disappear from. Miranda’s writing is twisty, with lots of cliffhangers. I really enjoyed this one! I wanted a little more in the end, but it was a solid fall read
I loved the setting of this book! A seemingly simple Inn tucked away near a particularly notorious span of the Appalachian Trail- sign me up. It's long and drawn out at times, but overall I liked the characters and the overall plot a lot.
Meghan Miranda writes hardworking, underdog female characters so well. This has all the traces of what she does best, in a fun, mysterious setting. I think this book could have been about half the length, but overall I enjoyed it.
Thank you #NetGalley and #MeganMiranda for the ARC of this thriller.
I’m a huge reader of thrillers and mysteries. If there’s a female heroine with a sketchy past I’m all in. Such was the case with Last to Vanish. As expected, I enjoyed the trip to Cutter’s Pass and the ride into the past history of four disappearances.
There were a couple of things I had a little difficulty with:
1. It took took nearly 2/3 of the book before we even saw a shadow of what was actually at play here. Too long!
2. Four separate disappearance stories of 7 people was stretching it just a tad bit for me.
I did love the revelation about Abby and her actual connection. That was a total surprise. So nice to be treated to a stunner now and again.
Overall l, this was a solid thriller, if a bit complicated to see all the threads sewn together into an understandable conclusion.
Small town USA located near the Appalachian Trail where you have a multitude of people go missing over decades. What can go wrong? Who is responsible? That is the genesis for this novel. What follows is a complicated unraveling of the mystery, and leads one to ask the question who is worthy of your trust. This was a nice little mystery for me, but it was just that. It didn’t grip me as I have experienced in the past with this author. Thanks to NetGalley for the early read.
The Last to Vanish is an atmospheric mystery that will have you guessing what happened to the missing travelers from the start.
Abby Lovett is a transplant to Cutter'a Pass and plans to never leave. The inn she works at is her safe haven and she's got the routines for managing down pat. But everything changes when Trey Landon appears on a mission to discover what happened to his missing brother. In the small town of Cutter's Pass, everyone is hiding a secret. The question is: who's going to be the one to let slip what happened to numerous missing travelers?
Megan Miranda is no stranger to writing atmospheric tales. She is able to craft an eerie vibe straightaway with Cutter's Pass and the lodge that everyone tends to pass through. While I loved the location and the premise behind Miranda's latest, I was left wanting for more the last half of the story. There was less action and more details that could've been placed with other scenes for better pacing. By the time the killer was revealed in the last ten percent, I was ready to move on and didn't care what happened to the missing passengers. Every author has a "miss" at times and I look forward to her next piece.
I am a huge Megan Miranda fan and The Last to Vanish did not disappoint. I enjoyed how the book was set up, focusing on each disappearance, but in a way that didn’t interrupt the flow of the story. I’m definitely recommending this one!
