Let me just start off by saying that I absolutely devoured this book.
Abby Lovett has been working at The Passage Inn located in Cutter’s Pass for 10 years. Cutter’s Pass is haunted by the unsolved disappearances of multiple people. Landon West, a journalist, is the last to go missing, and his brother Trey wants answers. Trey shows up to the inn and begins investigating on his own, causing Abby to start questioning the people around her.
A very brief summary, I feel like no matter what I say I won’t be giving this book the praise it deserves. I seriously loved this book. The pacing of the story, the characters, the atmosphere, everything was perfect. I loved the suspense throughout the book, and at one point I had to stop reading because I was working alone at night and started to get creeped out. This book was so addicting, I didn’t want to stop and kept trying to figure out the disappearances on my own.
I absolutely love this book. A thriller about mysterious disappearances in a small town where the main character is still largely an outsider. I absolutely cannot wait to find out what happened. Amazing plot and perfectly constructed characters!
This is a story about a small town in NC called Cutter’s Pass. The main character is Abby who loses her single mother and heads to this mysterious town looking for a place to stay while passing through, but ends up working and living there permanently. The mystique behind the town is the “vanishing” of different hikers through a 25 year span. The notoriety helps business at the Inn where Abby works (and where many of the missing were staying) With the arrival of a new guest at the Inn, Abby finds herself revisiting the mystery of the disappearances and attempts to uncover the truth herself. This was a dark and twisty tale. Great atmosphere and creep factor throughout the novel. I gave this novel a 4 star rating. That ending!!!!!!

This had a good premise and a lot of promise. I was looking forward to reading about those who had gone missing in the Appalachians from that area of NC. I was also looking forward to another book by Megan Miranda. However, this simply failed to hold my interest. I gave up at about 50%.
I appreciate this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher, MarySue Rucci Books, in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked the premise of this story. a missing journalist writing about missing people in a NC hiking town. the journalist's brother shows up and the desk clerk starts to slowly investigate. the problem was that it was sloooooowly. the pace and the tension just wasn't there. the characters were okay on the development side and there were a couple of twists towards the end. The book was just okay.

A beautiful town in the Appalachian Trail wilderness sounds like the perfect escape for the nature minded. But one town seems like a place to avoid after too many people disappear near it. The trail to finding what happened to all of them leads through so many twists and turns that it could only be written by Megan Miranda.
Brrr… I’m just shivering incessantly! You’re just getting lost inside the slow tension building, feeling the creepy sensation of getting locked in an inn when the storm comes out, lights and phone lines are out! The mysteries about the place and missing persons are getting in your nerves, you keep flipping the pages to find out how those mysteries will unfold, who will be the perpetrator, squirming in your seat, restraining your panic attacks, breathing heavily. That’s how I devoured the best book of the author!
I loved this mystery! This is my kind of dark, creepy, claustrophobic, haunted small town story I seriously enjoyed!
Cutter's Pass, North Carolina: The town covers
roughly four square miles of a valley, tucked against the base of a mountain. Six visitors have gone missing in the last twenty-five years. As a result, some have called it the most dangerous town in the state. It's easy to believe, if you want. It's just as easy to disbelieve.
BUT THE TRUTH IS…
Those are the last words written by Landon West, a famous reporter, disguising his identity to write a special article about missing persons and joined them by being labeled as number seven: last missing person!
Now his brother Trey checked in to stay at inn, the place where Abby has been working for 10 years. She came here after losing her mother at the age of 18. The inn’s owners Vincent and Celeste accepted her to stay and help with them. How can they say no to their family? She’s the niece of Vincent, grieving her mother.
After Vincent’s passing away, Celeste acted like her as a daughter she never had.
Abby still feels like an outsider of the place. She feels like there are big secrets in town including the truth about what happened to the missing 7 people.
It starts with Fraternity Four’s vanishing into the thin air 25 years ago. Then Alice Kelly has lastly seen at the town’s Tavern and she also vanished just like nature photographer Farrah Jordan did. The reporter Landon West suspected something fishy was going on at the town. Could he be the last victim of the person who has been hunting the people for unknown reason? Did he get closer to the truth?
Abby wants to be part of town’s union but that means she has to let it go, prevent Trey dig out more! But her curiosity gets the better of her: she has to find the truth behind incidents in expanse of exposing the dirty secrets of townies had buried for years!
Overall: Giving my five chilling stars! This is freaking exciting and unputdownable!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Scribner/ Marysue Rucci Books for sharing this amazing digital copy with me in exchange my honest opinions.
This book started off strong for me — I was immediately drawn to the woodsy setting of The Passage Inn. The small town feel of Cutter’s Pass was the perfect blend of cozy and mysterious.
I liked how Abby was the sole narrator of this book and how each part of the book was separated based on each missing person. The writing format was organized and easy to follow.
Things started going downhill for me during the last couple of chapters. The ending was not necessarily mind-blowing for me and I am still left with questions, which is not ideal after finishing a book, especially a thriller.
I wish the ending didn’t fall flat for me because overall I thought this was an entertaining read!
I've tried a couple Miranda novels and I haven't been all that impressed so I wrote her off as an author that isn't for me but the reviews for her latest book were so intriguing and positive that I felt it only fair to give her another shot.
I should have listened to my gut. This is the worst one I've read yet.
This book is downright boring. 🥱😴🥱😴
So the gist is that a bunch of people over the years have disappeared without a trace from the idyllic mountain community of Cutters Pass, NC. Abbie, who runs the local Inn, sets out to find the truth when the brother of the latest guy to disappear shows up in town.
I get that Miranda was trying to set the atmosphere but the descriptions of the town, the inn, the hiking trails went on and on and on. It didn't create atmosphere for me but it did get really monotonous to the point that my eyes were glazing over. Then we have all the characters, from the people that live in the town to the random guests staying at the inn, and I didn't care one iota about any of them. Most of this novel we spend inside Abbie's head with all her thoughts and imaginings. Honestly, I hated Abbie. She was such a drag of a main character. I read straight through to the 50% mark then skim read the rest because I was desperate to be done with this. The ending really sealed the deal though. Miranda and I are officially parting ways. 2 stars!
I have many good friends that have loved this novel so please check out their reviews before you write this one off.
Thank you to NetGalley and Scribner for my complimentary copy.
I usually love Miranda's work but this was a bit of a miss for me. I understand that the Passing Inn was supposed to be its own character with its own secrets (hence the endless descriptions of the mountains, the pass, the repainting) but we never got past the lobby and the basement and a brief foray into Cabin 4. The reason this part is taking up so much of the review is because those descriptions and lines harkening back to it, take up a large part of the book. We also have an unreliable narrator and a weird resolution to the central mystery. Did I still speed through it? Yes. Would I read another book by Megan Miranda? Yes, absolutely. For readers new to her, Id save this one until after reading a few of her earlier ones. For repeat readers, you may enjoy this but for me it's so/so.
Another great domestic thriller from Megan Miranda! I’m a sucker for the way she develops characters and unfolds mysteries through gossip and drama. The story is a domestic thriller, but it feels more high stakes than some of her past work. It was juicy and entertaining with a side of true crime feel. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a fun, fast paced summer read! 4/5 stars.
Sadly, this was a miss for me. I found it slow, and bogged down in so much detail that it became hard to follow. I stuck with it to find out what happened, but even the resolution was not especially interesting for me. However, I give it an extra star or two for the descriptions of the mountain setting, which I did enjoy. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a great read! It started a smidge slow for me, but picked up! I was very glad I pushed through. I always loved the way she develops her characters and uses descriptions that are deeper than other authors. Must read!
This was a hard one for me because it started so very slowly. I felt like this was lacking the typical Megan Miranda pizazz that she normally has in all her writing. It got much better towards the end but still disappointing.
This book was a bit on the slower side compared to the authors other books. Still enjoyable and the author is still a great master of surprise. I will continue to seek out more titles from her!
This book started off slow. I think it was too slow to get hooked. The twist on who the killer was was very random. It was definitely unpredictable though!
Megan Miranda's books are great when it comes to atmosphere and setting, but the mysteries themselves tend to be just okay for me. This one had a twist that I wasn't expecting but I found myself not really caring about any of the characters or what happened to them. Also, the explanation for what happened to the Fraternity Four was a little hard to believe and came across kind of cartoonish. There was a little "too much" going on in this very small, secluded town. I also didn't get Georgia's point in this book or why she reacted the way she did. I don't think that was explained well, unless I just missed it. Overall, this was just a little too slow for me but I think if you are generally a fan of Megan Miranda, Shari LaPena, or Lisa Jewell you will enjoy this. The best character in these books is usually the location, which the author is very good at writing. 3 stars. Thank you to Scribner and NetGalley for the DRC in exchange for an honest review.
This atmospheric and brilliant book by Megan Miranda has stolen a top spot in my 2022 reads! I absolutely loved every page, I couldn't tear myself away from this beautifully written novel! So SO good.
A small town in the mountains, a tourist attraction drawing more than just hikers, several mysterious disappearances, nestled into the mountain itself- the small community of Cutters Pass draws you into its curious story. The community is close- knit and keeps its secrets close to the chest. After a 25-year-long string of disappearances, this little village draws many a hiker and internet sleuth to its beautiful scenery and alluring mystery.
Abby Lovett has come to escape the death of her mother and ends up in Cutters Pass for a decade. She wants to know what happened to the missing but even more, she wants to be accepted into the community as an "insider." She works at the Inn, the scene of many disappearances. All the characters are engaging, but Abby is dynamic. The setting comes alive on the page, it's description of a small, mountain town fully absorbs the reader. The twists are timely and unexpected, Miranda takes the reader on a ride they can't escape.
LOVED this novel, to date it's Miranda's best work. 5 brilliant, sparkling stars
A decent thriller with twists and turns. I will read some of the author's other books now. ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.
I am usually a fan of Megan Miranda’s stories, but I felt like this was lacking her usual psychological suspense, which is even more compelling than the mystery. If you were anxiously awaiting her next book you may be a little disappointed. If you have never read her books, I would read other books of hers to start.
