Loved the small town and the twists I didn’t see coming. I couldn’t put the book down. Little slower start but loved putting on my detective hat.
I'm a huge fan of this author! The setting of a small North Carolina town was what drew me in. The characters were described so well that I became immersed...like a silent viewer of everything happening around me. Loved all the twists and surprises. I couldn't put this down! I highly recommend this book. 5 stars from me.
Residents of a small town on the edge of mountain hiking trails hide secrets of how hikers have gone missing. Abby is determined to find the truth, and in doing so she puts herself and the town's reputation and livelihood at risk.
I could not connect well with the characters or plot. For me, it was a "let's finish this so I can move onto the next book" kind of read. The premise and setting did pique my interest.
I received a free copy of The Last to Vanish by the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book is a great for lover of a good mystery. I felt compelled to keep reading because I HAD to know the result of all the missing people in this book. I was surprised and satisfied with the ending! Highly recommend.
I absolutely loved the setting of this book. The Appalachian Trail has so much mystery! I could clearly picture the setting and the Inn. The way the story unfolded was a slow burn and one mystery solved after the next. I will definitely recommend this book!!
Loved this one! I really enjoyed the small town, big secrets feel. Could not put it down! Megan Miranda writes a great thriller. There were times I literally felt my heart rate rise! I loved it.
I'm a fan of Megan Miranda and her latest is a pleasure to read. Set in a very small town in the Appalachian mountains, this is a missing person mystery. Cutter's Pass has a double reputation - it's the start of the Appalachian Trail, and it has a history of visitors disappearing up in the mountains. Are the disappearances linked? Are they random? Why is it never people who live in town who disappear?
Abby settled in Cutter's Pass years ago but still feels like an outsider compared to the very insular town inhabitants. With the latest disappearance, she begins to see that everything doesn't add up, and starts her own amateur investigation of the entire history of the town's disappearances. Locals disapprove of her actions, and she wonders who she can trust as she discovers more and more shocking aspects to the town and the missing visitors.
This had a fun vibe. There are several great twists at the end, perhaps with a too neat wrap up, but I enjoyed the drama of the reveals. This is a fun read.
The book is set in the mountains of North Carolina. There are mysterious disappearances of several people over a 15 year period are still unsolved. People are always stopping by to ask questions and see if some new news has been uncovered. The most recent person, the brother of the last to vanish, books a room in the same room where his brother was last seen. Is he the cuprit? Is it Cory, the son of the Tavern's owners? The story has a lot of different angles and will keep you reading to find out how all of these disappearances happened.
Thank you Scribner Publicity and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review! I truly enjoyed this book from front to back. I have read more than one book by Megan Miranda and this has to be one of her best yet!! It kept me on my toes the entire time and had me guessing what happened to these people. I was rooting for Abby to figure out this mystery the whole time. Abby's character reminded me of myself at times because she was just trying to figure out where she belonged in this world and who to trust. As a young adult, it is often hard to figure this out. It truly takes a village to help an adult to figure this out! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a good puzzle of what happened and why did this happen.
In the Last to Vanish, Megan Miranda is very creative in her writing. The residents of Cutler Pass all know about the disappearance of hikers, but one of them is hiding a secret. Miranda knows how to build slowly then deliver with a twist you didn't see coming. The main character life becomes endangered because one of her friends will stop at nothing to keep the secrets of Cutler Pass. I enjoyed reading her book.
Abigail has worked at a quaint mountain resort for ten years. During that time, any people come to the town to try and solve the mystery of the Fraternity Four that disappeared years ago. More people have disappeared since. The pacing was a little slow hut it was an enjoyable read.
The Last to Vanish is good! There were twists, there were turns, there were likeable characters that you rooted for. Megan Miranda kept the plot progressing while providing enough context clues to lead you in one direction and then surprise you with a turn. I found the title enjoyable, engaging, and one I will recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of “The Last to Vanish” in exchange for an honest review. I read this book in one sitting. I thought it was pretty good. While the first chunk of the book was pretty slow, I felt like it established a sense of atmosphere and place. There were a couple of moments that I felt were left untied, but ultimately I thought that the twist/reveal was interesting. If you’re looking for a fun mystery, I would recommend Megan Miranda’s latest.
Love the atmosphere and setting in this one, Build was a bit slow but it was a good solid mystery and I didn’t see the twists coming. 3.5 stars. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
In The Last to Vanish, Megan Miranda's talent for creating mysterious atmosphere and complicated relationships are clear. The residents of the small mountain town of Cutter's Pass and its Passage Inn all have knowledge about the disappearance of hikers over a span of decades, but the complicated relationships show a crack in the veneer of the scenic destination. The first part of the novel relies more on mood than clues, but as the main character discovers that people she knows are hiding their motivations and connections to the disappearances, her life in Cutter's Pass becomes dangerous. Lots of plot twists help to reveal how layered the deception can be. Really good read!
Thoughts: I am a big fan of Megan Miranda's writing style and backlog of books. This was a highly anticipates read for me and it was a little lack luster. This one was a very slow start for me, and until about 60% of the way through I wasn't really seeing it come together enough. I did, however, fly through the last quarter all the way to the slightly unexpected ending. Her previous books like The Last House Guest, Girl From Widow Hill and Such a Quiet Place were better for me.
Cutter's Pass is a picturesque tourist village where the natives are like family. Even though Abigail is not homegrown, she loves the people of Cutter's Pass, and they are good to her. Under the beautiful scenery and kind people, however, lie dark secrets
Megan Miranda writes another good mystery. The characters are likable, the plot keeps you guessing, and the setting is a place I'd like to visit. The Last to Vanish will keep you guessing until the very end. Thank you NetGalley for another good mystery.
Abby works at the Passage resort that sits next to the beginning of the Appalachian Trail. This resort is known for the disappearance of a group of four men twenty five years ago. Since those four friends went missing, three separate disappearances have happened, two women and a man. The latest disappearance, Landon West, occurred four months ago and his brother Trey just came to stay at The Passage. He wants to search for information about his brother and hopes to find answers. Abby and Trey both end up finding items that belonged to missing people. This makes her suspicious and a little creeped out. The story of the missing fraternity four is interesting and eerie but I would have liked more details of the last three crimes. I do feel that the ending was somewhat rushed. 4 stars!
Another great read from Megan Miranda! A rustic inn at Cutter’s Pass has a reputation for people disappearing. There are hiking trails nearby, along with the Appalachian Trail. Abby has worked at the Passage Inn for 10 years, trying to be accepted as other than another “outsider.” Local folks and rumors/gossip stick close to the ones they trust, old-timers who have lived there, and are suspicious of those who don’t. Many, many secrets in this small town. Abby tries to help solve a mystery of one man who disappeared decades ago, when his brother recently came to investigate and went missing also. This book was hard to put down, as I wanted to read and find out more. Many dark twists and turns, right up to the very end. If you like the outdoors, hiking, and adventure, you will enjoy this book. Highly recommend!
Thank you to Netgalley, Ms. Miranda, and Scribner for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Abigail, the main character, manages and lives at the Passage Inn in a small, mountainside town. Mysteriously over the years, people keep vanishing. Most of these people either stayed at the inn or stopped by to visit. Throughout the book, Abigail tries to figure out what really happened to these people and if maybe someone close to her is the one to blame.
