What a great resource! Post-Traumatic Growth by Brenda Ungerland was a good chunk of reading and isn’t something I feel should be read in one sitting, and I enjoyed reading it over the course of several months and really thinking about the concept. I’ve been able to read several books on trauma/ PTSD this year after a personal trauma happened to me in late 2021/ early 2022, and this was one of the best resources I was able to read.

It covers a lot of information but I liked how it was presented and I didn’t find it too overwhelming or wordy. I also appreciated that it felt well researched and written and included lots of quotes, thoughts, tips and etc from other sources in addition to Ungerlands.

Would highly recommend this to everyone, even if you haven’t been through a great trauma, as you no doubt know someone that has and could better support them!

Thank you NetGalley for the gifted review copy - I very much enjoyed reading and all thoughts and opinions are mine.

This book is for anyone who's ever experience trauma in their life (basically each and everyone of us). I have read a lot of books on the subject trying to find tidbits that will help me live a better and fuller life. This book has a ton of those tidbits. It is a very comprehensive guide with a lot of practical advice. I loved reading other's stories of how they've overcome their trauma and even thrive. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to move forward in life.

A great book with useful tips on how to heal while growing. I really enjoyed the practicality Ungerland used throughout the book to help the reader learn how to overcome post-traumatic events and come out on the other side. Well done.

I'm reviewing "Post-Traumatic Growth" by Brenda Ungerland as a professional who works with many traumatised individuals. I think this perspective is important, as I considered this book a coherent write-up of the stages to not only coping, but thriving despite difficult experiences.

All the steps were presented in a clear way, and case studies, as well as practical exercises, were very useful.

However, I'm not sure if this book will suffice as a stand-alone read for people with experience of trauma. I'm afraid that without counsellor's guidance and support the book itself simply won't be enough.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher of this novel for the E-Arc copy. I am rating this book based on my own personal opinion and was not given anything in return. I am not leaving a entire review because I read so many at a time that I physically cannot right now.

A comprehensive, detailed guide on how to survive and move forward from PTSD. A must-read for everyone and anyone who has experienced any diversity/challenge/ trauma in their lives and feel a bit stuck. I am so grateful to have come across this book, so much so that I purchased the actual paper copy to have and refer to over and over again. Thank you to Netgalley and Chapell Hill Press for a digital copy in return for an honest review.

This books provides some good quotes and inspiring stories. It’s more of a collection of sources rather than an action plan.

‘Post traumatic growth’ is a book that inspires hope. It provides tools to heal the trauma in our lives.

I found the book to inspire with anecdotal evidence in the form of heart wrenching testimonials.

Mindfulness is promoted, recognising the importance of the mind-body connection. I. also found the section on neuroplasticity to be interesting, insightful and highly relevant.

Chapter summaries provided very helpful recaps, with each chapter documenting the next stage in the process of providing post-traumatic growth.

Overall I would recommend this book to any interested reader.

My thanks to Net galley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.

Excellent book! This is clear, comprehensive, well-researched and well-written coverage of the entire trauma and recovery issue from a psychological and even spiritual perspective. My book group chose this one and everyone found it practical, inspiring and uniquely helpful. It's filled with human stories of pain and grief along with wonderful inspirational quotes from poets, psychologists and philosophers. It's also packed with useful exercises and methods to assist in the journey from trauma to health and even to real joy. These exercises become what the author refers to as her “spiritual tool bag” for grounding the many insights into action steps.

Brenda Ungerland takes us through the phases of grief and trauma: from the immobilization stage with the hopelessness of the dark night of the soul, through surrendering (ego-cide). Break through comes from this breakdown phase. Then we move into the stage that fully comes to terns with the difficult reality. From there, into integration and recovery, which sometimes the resulting in true transformation.

These stages do not necessarily occur in a nice straight line. It is often three steps forward, and two steps back, with resistance contributing to the struggle, along with practical strategies for overcoming the resistance.

This book is about the opportunity to surrender at the lowest point, to break open and break through to new growth, to new understanding, about ourselves and about life. Although we all experience grief, loss, betrayal, and fear, working through to recovery can bring profound change, not just bring us back to where we were. Growth! Even though there may be days, weeks, months or even years of being stuck, this transformation is always possible and potentially meaningful.

“Post-Traumatic Growth: Thriving in the Face of Adversity” joins my library of excellent self-help, psychology, and spirituality books, with the likes of Scott Peck, DM Ruiz, Caroline Myss,, Pema Chodron, Brene Brown, and Kahlil Gibran.

This is a powerful aid to those working through grief and trauma.
Our book group gave it 5 stars. Highly recommend.
