When the Wind Came is a beautifully told and illustrated story about a natural disaster that destroys a family's home. When the wind came, father took care of the animals, mother made a meal all of the family, including the child narrating this story, waited safely in the root cellar. In child friendly language we hear how the girl feels and see the family pull together and be thankful that they are all okay. In this day and age, there are so many disasters that destroy homes, this book puts a child's spin on it, showing what they can do to help and move forward. My granddaughter was upset when we read this book, as she was worried about the family, so we talked about what her family could do it this happened to them. It is a dark story, but also uplifting. I can see reading this book to children after a disaster occurs so they can understand what the people might be dealing with.

Jan Andrew’s When the Wind Came deals with a traumatic experience of tornado that destroys everything. From a little Girl’s perspective, When the Wind Came tells the story of how a big wind came and destroyed her house. It also tells the story of how the Girl’s Family overcame and pushed through to survive. I loved how the Author expressed how the Girl was feeling about what happened and showed how she pushed through. I recommend this book and believe it would beneficial to kids that are going through something traumatic. Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. My review is also on Goodreads.

This was such a sweet story about remembering even when things are terrible, like a storm destroying everything, you still have the people you love. I like the lesson for children on what really matters in life.

This is one of those books that looks simple, but is much deeper than the first glance shows.
Hauntingly illustrated, this book tells the story of a family that has to deal with a horrific weather event and the aftermath of it. It shows how scary it can be to sit in the unknown, but it is never overwhelmingly frightening. And the it shows how something simple as bubbles can change the mood and perspective in the aftermath.

As our country goes through many severe weather events, this book will help children deal with what they are seeing in real life and in the news. It will absolutely be a good starting point and will help give words to some of the things they [and the adults that read it to them] must be feeling.
As someone who has lived through multiple severe weather events, this was a calming book for me and made me wish we had had something like this when I was smaller.

I highly recommend this book.

A little girl experiences a tornado. She discovers there can still be good things that happen even after everything is lost. The illustrations are really good - simple, yet effective.

This is an interesting perspective of a tornado. We follow a child as a tornado destroys her home and they try to remember that the little things are the important things that matter and that as long as they have each other, they will be okay.

A gripping tale of a tornado hitting a young girl's home, Andrews has crafted a tale about a natural disaster but focuses on hope.

The prose is simple, with the narrator telling the story from her perspective, often repeating the words "I remember" then sharing the details of the storm and it's devastating effects. She shares her experiences and feelings, the fear as her family hid in the storm cellar, and the sadness at seeing the destruction. It tells children that it is okay to feel these feelings, and that bad things can happen and it is okay to feel sad about them. At the same time it also shares the message of resilience, bouncing back after bad things happen, healing and hope. It lets children know that even in times of struggle, that family and friends can be an inspiration and bring joy and laughter.

The text may be simple but the message is not. It is a universal experience of humankind to go through struggles and challenges and this is a way for adults to start the conversation with children about the bad times they may experience, but also about how to work through them and move on.

This story uses repetition and simple language to tell the story of a family whose house is destroyed in a natural disaster. While I enjoyed the sentiment of the story, that laughter can transform even the darkest of times, the execution of the story and the illustrations fell a bit short for me.

I received this arc in exchange for my honest review.

This book describes what hapoen when a tornado hits a little girl's house. She describes sitting in the cellar and waiting and their rehabilitation efforts after. This would be a good book for children going through similar situations.

Lovely story and wonderful usage of figurative language. I love the way "hope" is conveyed towards the end. Sparse in words, this book is heavy with inner meaning. Loved it and would recommend this.

I love the moral of this story!! This book is perfect for showing children how to make the best out of bad things that can happen out of our control. The language structure on some of the pages would be perfect to use as a grammar lesson on Authors craft! Love love love!!!!

I received an e-arc from the publisher and netgalley for an honest review. This book was so touching. I almost teared up when the mom began to make the family food even though there was hardly anything left of their home after the tornado. It was written and illustrated beautifully. Thank you Jan for this gem.

This beautiful, but heart wrenching book tells the story of a family who loses their home in a tornado. The illustrations have great impact and the sparse text tells a deep, meaningful story. This is a book that will need a lot of discussion to make sure that children aren’t frightened after reading it. It would be a great story to read to kids who have had to deal with a catastrophic event.

It can be important to see a tragedy such as a tornado thru a child's eyes. A young girls farm was destroyed by the tornado. What were they doing that day? How did they come together as a family? Whether you have lived thru a tornado or could, it is good to prepare your child for a tragedy. I thought this was done very well. It was simplified and thoughtful. Not put fear in a child's mind but hope. There is always hope when you have family to hold you up!

A special thank you to Kid's Can Press and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review

In this story a tornado or similar storm hits a small rural area and a family must hide in their cellar, and then rebuild their home and life afterwards. Despite the fear and challenges the family faces, the two children find ways to make joy. I especially love the last few sentences “those laughs didn’t change anything. They made no difference. Those laughs changed everything. They made all the difference in the world.” I think that this message shows children that even in times of uncertainty, a family taking care of each other and a moment of joy such as laughter is all you really truly need.

I think this would make a great addition to any early years classroom or elementary school library. The sentences and paragraphs are short and the pages have few lines of text and beautiful illustrations. This makes it great for young readers. Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this great book!

Painfully beautiful! A tragic but heartening story to represent families damaged by the aftermath of natural and man made disasters. Jan Andrews pictures a family trying to survive the loss after a violent storm through a young girl's eye. She remembers the horror before it all started. Her parents trying to keep her and her brother safe, the loud noises and the darkness. When they were finally safe, they came out from their hiding place to find their home destroyed, all their belongings scattered on the ground and the barn animals freed. This is the type of moments where all we feel is despair, blame our luck and the creator and try to vent out anger on someone or something. Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, they get to work and slowly hope starts to bloom. I love how Jan took a heavy topic and created a child friendly, softer version of the actual events while keeping it realistic. It's well-written and the illustrations are wonderfully done. I felt she could explore the topic a bit more, add some information on hurricanes and typhoons at the end of the story. I do realize this book is meant for kids much younger than me, so I guess they would like it just fine. Thank you Netgalley! For letting me read the sad but hopeful book.

Beautifully illustrated and minimal prose make this book even more powerful. This story follows a family who experience a tornado and its aftermath. I can see this book being used to help younger children connect with others who have suffered a loss of home. Also ties in themes of family, resiliency and perserverance.
