This is a YA romance, with the "should I follow my dream or do what my parents want" formula.
That being said, I enjoyed this more than I expected. Honey has been with Luca pretty much since the day they were born. Her life and her future with Luca is all mapped out. But she wants something different - maybe something more..
Honey and Luca agree to go on 5 dates to see if they find someone else, or if they are really soul mates. Well, you can probably predict what will happen. BUT - there were a few surprises in there. And in the beginning I was team Luca - sure Honey wants more, but what she has with Luca is pretty special. But then we keep finding out other little things about him and my red flag alert goes on...
This was a really sweet, cute, fun, funny young adult romance. No sex, no swearing - a clean book appropriate for everyone

I throughly enjoyed this YA romance when I just expected to like it.
First off I love Honey already and I’m in the south so southern charm makes perfect sense. I am also in my senior year of high school, so I feel that I can’t relate really well the these characters. Fun fact, I also play on a team called Wildcats!
I really like the “I have to follow my parents dream, but I don’t want too” situation going on.
Luca has some major red flags. I am not into him right now.
I’m really liking Honey and the five date thing is super cute! I’m also a STEM major. I feel so immersed in this book. Everything is fun and realistic without typically high school drama so far!
My favorite quote: “I’m totally capable of not being murdered without Luca’s help.”
I feel that.
I don’t know how I am half way through, but somehow I am and I’m loving it!!! Mason becoming more interesting. 😉
I think there is a small typo when Mason and Honey are making there first bet, but it’s small. I really love the banter between them, it’s so cute!
Vu might not be a side character, but he’s adorable. And Mason- the baby- I’m already in love with this boy! He has some good advice- this boy is on fire.
He’s a 10/10!
Mrs. Young writes pure magic. I’m so sad I’m almost done with this book- it’s just amazing. Fireworks everywhere!
I’m so in love with this book! It was so sweet and really hit hard with me trying to figure out my own college dreams. My only con was I want more Mason and Honey- I don’t think there was enough of them.
I’m actually surprised at how much I enjoyed this. I was expecting some sappy YA love story about high school sweethearts but that’s NOT what this is. This is a story about love, yes, but even more, it’s a story about independence, freedom, paving your own way and being true to yourself.
Honey and Luca give off some serious Dean and Rory vibes in the beginning, and Luca acted like an absolute douche at times. It irritates me, but I’m glad he was able to turn things around. If I was Honey I’m definitely not sure I would have been as forgiving or as nice to him.
While this WAS a quick and easy read, it was definitely not boring. There were twists and turns and questions left unanswered until the very end. I was completely invested as this story took me on a journey, and I was more than happy to let it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Xpresso Book Tours for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A fellow reviewer once said to me that she didn’t like reading romances because they were so predictable. That you always knew that love would win in the end, and so she was never surprised, and so, following her advice, I didn’t read romances for the longest time, until I started stumbling across some written by authors I knew on Instagram. Cheyanne Young was one such author. Her last book, The Last Wish of Sasha Cade, blew me away. Yes, it was a romance, but it was not predictable in any way.
And that got me started on reading romances. Seeking out the really good ones, because, 99% of everything is dreck. There are bad romances just as there are bad science fiction.
So, I was pleasantly surprised that Cheyanne has come out with a new romance, “If We Break Up”.
The basic story is that Honey has been with her boyfriend since nearly birth, and he is comfortable and nice, like a good pair of jeans, but there is nothing surprising about him. And she wonders if she should try dating five other people to see if perhaps there is more to life.
The story is told by Honey, and she has a great voice, and the both is both funny and heart breaking as a good romance should be. This is a love triangle, even though Honey doesn’t realize it, and although when we begin the book we are rooting for Luca, by the middle we are wondering if that is who should win, despite the narrator swearing up and down that Luca should.
A fun read. Good turns of phrases.
If you love a good YA romance, this is the book for you.
If you are tired of YA romances, you should give this one a try.
And if you think romances are boring and predictable, you might find that this is the exception to the rule.
