Don’t dig up the past. You might get more than you expected. Add a romance to the story for added tension. Great story with that Daniels touch
Murder Gone Cold is a Mystery/Thriller with a bit of a romance undertone. It is the first book in A Colt Brothers Investigation series. James and his 3 brothers are all rodeo cowboys. James has been injured and returns home to Lonesome, Montana to heal. He is planning to stay in the doublewide trailer that he and his brothers use as a home base, but it is nothing but ashes. He ends up staying in the small bedroom/bathroom that his father used at his office, when working as a P.I. His father died under mysterious circumstances while working on a case, that is still unsolved seven years later. James has nothing else to do, so he decides to look into the case. Once he starts asking questions, some people become antsy and would prefer that the case remain unsolved. With no kitchen, James heads to the sandwich shop next door, and discovers it is run by Lori, a girl he went to school with. She was attracted to him then and those feelings surface once again. Although Lori tries to bury those feelings, they find themselves working together to figure out who killed the young boy as well as if his father was also murdered.
I really enjoyed this book, but it was a bit slow to start. I liked that there were two mysteries to solve in this book. Lori and James had some sexual tension, but the romance took a backseat to the mystery. I liked both main characters and wanted them to be safe, solve the crime and that their relationship would work out. There was some danger as secrets were revealed which added to the suspense and thriller feeling. Following the clues, unraveling secrets and working together Lori and James are able to sort things out keeping one step ahead of the threats and danger. I will say the ending was a great surprise. My one issue is that the romance took such a back seat, and I would have liked there to have been more of a relationship development before they ended up together. Overall, this was a great mystery, with suspense and some gripping situations. I happily recommend this one.
Two book sin one here! Yeah! both flowed great and had characters that were enjoyable along with a story line that keeps you interested! A great addition to the Intrigue line and some of BJ Daniels best works :)
When I think of romance, I think of books just like this one, that gives all the feels and satisfies every romance junkies' heart. This is a perfect books to snuggle up with on any day.
Another great book by B. J. Daniels. Her books hold my interest from start to finish. They have just the right amount of romance, drama and intrigue.
This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the first book in A Colt Brothers Investigation series. I really enjoyed this book, but I do think the beginning was a little slow to get going. The suspense/mystery was front and center in this book, and I really loved the mystery in this book. Mystery kept me guessing and wanting to keep reading this book. The romance was cute and in the background of this book. The characters in this book was great, and I really enjoyed getting to know the characters. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Harlequin Intrigue) or author (B.J. Daniels) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
Crossfire (The extra book at the end)
This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the 9th book in the Code Red series. This book is fill of suspense and action. The romance is a second chance romance, and I found the romance to be a much needed break with all the action and craziness that was going on. I really liked the characters. I really enjoyed reading this book. If you loved Police Mystery/Action books then this is the book for you. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
James has just come back into his hometown after time away on the rodeo circuit. He is a bit beat up and he is not getting any younger. He decides to investigate his dads last case as a PI before he was killed. Little does he know, this is going to open his eyes to many hidden secrets.
This is a book I would have LOVED in high school. It is a quick, no nonsense romantic suspense. And as most of you know…that is my guilty pleasure. I love the characters, James and Lorelei. And the mystery…I figured it out pretty early but I didn’t figure out the details. Trying to deduce exactly what happened on that stormy night in Montana really kept me glued to the book.
I read this in a couple of hours. I enjoy a story which doesn’t really have a lot of fluff…just all about the issue at hand! This would be a great book to read on a quick road trip!

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review
B. J. Daniels newest books, Murder Gone Cold & Crossfire will keep you on the edge of your seat and rapidly turning the pages…one is eerily mystifying and the other is intensely riveting. This author has a gift in crafting stories that enthrall…these two stories do exactly that.
Murder Gone Cold
The first story in the Colt Brothers Investigation series is as eerie as it is intriguing. Peeling back the layers of a near decade old cold case his deceased father was unable to solve before his death, James Colt is determined to find the answers his father was unable to…even if it means not returning to the Pro Bull Riding circuit. With the aide from the women he secretly crushed on in high school, Lorelei (Lori) Wilkins, the two meet more twists and turns and misdirections as they uncover a murder, and as a bonus, an arsonist…and small town corruption that goes back years. Definitely a series that’s only going to get better with each installment.
Crossfire
An intense hostage standoff brings back together Flint (SWAT Commander) and Anna (SWAT Paramedic), who had been engaged to be married five years prior. Coming back together under such an extremely tension filled circumstance provided the perfect backdrop for a suspenseful story that literally has you rapidly turning the pages.
Both stories are ones that stay with you long after their endings…with memorable characters and unique plots, it’s quite challenging to not finish each story in one sitting.
This ARC book was complimentary, provided by the Publisher and NetGalley. I am voluntarily providing my honest review.
I don’t have much to say about this one. It was entertaining and it kept me engaged enough to finish it in one setting. But it’s not a book that is going to have me thinking about it much now that I finished.
It was really just a feel good romance with a side of thriller. Which is…not really my style. But I liked it. I’d recommend it.
Thank you to Netgalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Outstanding mystery writing, beautifully paced with an intense love story
What an amazing set of stories! Murder Gone Cold is a captivating mystery romance that tries to solve a nine-year-old murder case, while Crossfire is a tense, taut action ride that follows a SWAT team dealing with a hostage situation at City Hall. Both stories involve a second-chance romance for the principle characters, with outstanding attention to detail and thoroughly fleshed out story and secondary characters.
James is back in his hometown for a short break from the rodeo when he decides to crash in his late father's private investigation office and comes across his father's last case - that of a hit-and-run that killed a young boy. He recognizes Lorelei, the owner of the sandwich shop next door, as the girl he'd crushed on years ago but always figured was way out of his league.
The mystery is complex, and the relationship between James and Lorelei is even more complicated. I loved the many layers to the interconnected activities of the night in question, and how nothing is what it seems at first - even when they think they've finally solved the case. There's a shocking, horrifying twist at the end that took me completely by surprise. The romance is equally intense, though it's a slow burn due to the main focus on the investigation. I loved their HEA and how quickly things progressed once the danger was over.
Crossfire picks up five years after Flint and Anna broke up, mostly due to his seemingly chauvinistic attitude that interfered with her career goals. Anna is the newest member of Flint's SWAT team and her first day at work finds them both neck-deep in the middle of a volatile hostage situation involving a junkie with no impulse control and a despondent elderly man with suicidal tendencies. And a victim who is another threat all by herself.
I loved the way the author uses a tightly-detailed timeframe to build the suspense and create palpable tension. Told in third person from multiple points of view, it makes even the worst villain sympathetic to some degree. Interspersed with the nail-biting action is Flint and Anna separately reminiscing about their earlier romance as they each realize that it's not really over for them. While there are a couple chapters at the end that cover the following weeks, the majority of the action takes place on just one life-changing day.
Both stories are standalone romances, but both leave some unanswered questions from their respective cases that will (hopefully) be addressed in future books. The writing is top-notch, as I've come to expect from this author, who tops my list for romances with mystery and suspense. I couldn't have loved this book more. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

really liked it
First, although Murder Gone Cold is billed as a mystery/thriller, it also has a romantic suspense backstory, and it appears that this is the first book in what may be the start of a new series featuring the 4 Colt brothers, set in Lonesome, Montana. I don't know how B.J. Daniels does it, but she always manages to hook me from the first page to the last, and she did it again with this novel. I'm giving it 4 stars because I would have enjoyed a bit more romance between the two principal characters, James Colt and Lorelei (Lori) Wilkins.
James and his 3 brothers all ride the rodeo circuit, but when 36-year-old James was injured during his last bronc ride, he returns home to rest and recuperate only to find that all that's left of doublewide trailer that had been home-base for him and his brothers, was nothing but ashes. He winds up moving into the small bedroom/bath in his late father's office, which his dad used to sleep in after working late. James' father was a private detective, who died before finishing his last case, the mysterious death of a 7-year-old boy whose body was found in a ditch just before it was about to be buried under concrete, nine years earlier. With not much to do but recuperate, James decides to look into the case, and that starts the ball rolling, because some of the people in Lonesome want the past to also be buried. James' father, Del Colt, also died under mysterious circumstances, a second mystery within a mystery.
In addition to meeting the locals, getting his license as a private investigator, and starting to ask questions, James also meets Lori, a gal he went to high school with, and who now owns the sandwich shop next door to his dad's office building. While she carries a silent but weird chip on her shoulder since he ignored her during their school years while she crushed on him, she too gets involved in trying to help his investigation, not even realizing that she's putting herself in danger too, but she's about to find out that there are more secrets and intrigue in the small town of Lonesome than she ever realized.
Clue by clue, Ms. Daniels leads us into the unsolved case (or it is two unsolved cases?), as well as the budding relationship between James and Lori, and as the secrets begin to unravel, there's danger lurking everywhere, and this is indeed a gripping thriller with one heck of a surprise ending. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and am happy to recommend it.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions stated are my own.
Two good romantic suspense stories from BJ Daniels. In the first a rodeo star injured in his last appearance comes home to recuperate. He finds the family trailer burned to the ground but luckily his deceased Dad was a PI and owned the building where his office was located, allowing him a place to stay. He found the case file for his Dad's last case deciding to try to solve it. He reconnects with a HS classmate and when things escalate on the case they work together as her stepmom is a suspect.
In Crossfire, a SWAT commander and Paramedic meet 5 years after their engagement ended because he wanted her to quit her job to stay home with any children they might have. His mother died when he was a child and he feels a mother's presence in the home is vital. When situations escalate in a hostage situation and SWAT is called in they realize the importance of true love and working together to resolve the situation.
I received a free ARC eBook from Net Galley and the publisher in exchange for my honest opinions.
I love a solid Intrigue by BJ Daniels, and in this book, I got two! Murder Gone Cold was a bit more of an imaginative stretch than Crossfire, but it was still well-written, intriguing, and made me curious about the Colt brothers. James Colt, injured in the rodeo, returned home to recover but found his home had been burned to the ground. Desperate for a place to stay, he went to his father's office and found the case he'd been working on when he had died. James, for some reason, decided he had to solve it. He had worked with his father and knew the PI business, but he wasn't sure he could solve a nine-year-old cold case. When he learned that his work neighbor was Lorelei, the girl he'd had a crush on in high school, he was more than willing to continue working next door to her just for the chance to see her. Little did he know how integral she would become to the case and his heart. My only complaint was the end of this book required more than suspension of reality. It was ridiculous and no one would do it, but maybe she was channeling some of those new TV shows that everyone loves. Regardless, I really enjoyed the book and I hope there are more books about the Colt brothers coming!
Crossfire was SO good! Former lovers turned coworkers on the SWAT team put them in a dangerous situation, a place Flint never wanted to be with Anna. What I loved about this intrigue was, the characters remembered their past as a couple while they were in the middle of a tense SWAT situation. It wasn't done in a way that made you lose sight of the situation they were in. It was done in a way that made you root to get them out of the situation and back together.
If I had to pick my favorite, I would say Crossfire was the one I loved the most because of the unique way it was written. I know there are going to be more of that series after reading the end, so I can't wait for those!
I really enjoyed this book by BJ Daniels. It was very well done and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone
Murder Gone Cold is a fast-paced murder mystery with a bit of romance. The main characters, Lorelei and James are likable characters and I was rooting for them. As the story went on, I was pulled in so I didn’t put the book down until I finished. There were some twists and turns and a few characters who were hiding things. The killer was a surprise. I’m looking forward to the next book in this new series.
James Colt was back in his hometown of Lonesome, Montana recuperating from his rodeo injuries. He loved riding broncs in the rodeo but he sure could get pretty banged-up. James figured he would head back to the rodeo after he healed but while waiting to heal James decided to try to solve the last case his Private Investigator father was working on when he died. This involved getting to know sandwich shop owner Lorelei Wilkins. Together they worked on the case and fell in love. Not that either road ran smoothly! I really enjoyed getting to know Lorelei and James. They are both very likable well-developed characters. The plot of this book took some surprising twists and turns and I really enjoyed the suspense. I am looking forward to the next Colt brother's story.
