The Summer we Buried is a story about friendship, love, difficult relationships, estranged families, mental health issues, and deceit. A secret from the past taints Tansy's life and her conflicts become even worse when Selene reappears demanding that she makes contact with her daughter, Jupiter, as a school counselor. And after that, Zach, a teacher in the same school and Selena's brother, approaches Tansy and asks her not to comply with that request. That's the start of a very well-woven plot, that puts everyone against everyone depending on the circumstance/moment, the past becomes alive in the present, and even more unexpected facts resurface. This story also raises concerns regarding the lack of medication when a mental health problem exists and the patient does not acknowledge it. This is the first book that I read by Jody Gehrman and I really enjoyed her writing style and will be looking for other books by this writer in the future.

I really enjoyed this one. It was a gripping mystery thriller. Sure I had it figured out but pleasantly surprised by the amazing twist at end! A five star fun read! I highly recommend.

The Summer We Buried is a slow-burning mystery that explores complicated relationships and difficult subjects, and readers who enjoy character-driven stories with a bit of mystery may find this book to be a worthwhile read.

The Summer We Buried is a mystery novel that tells the story of Tansy, a college counselor, and Selene, an old acquaintance from Tansy's past. The two women share a dark secret that has shattered their friendship and left Tansy with feelings of guilt and confusion. When Selene returns, demanding that Tansy help her intervene in the potentially abusive relationship of Selene's daughter Jupiter and her boyfriend Colton, Tansy is drawn back into the intensity of Selene's world.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I enjoyed the mystery aspect of the story and found the characters to be complex and well-developed, while I also found the first half of the book to be slow-paced and the characters unlikable. However, the writing is strong and the story picks up pace in the second half.

Slow burn, but kept my attention. This book was an enjoyable read, but I felt it was more mystery thank thriller.
This story is full of dark secrets with several twists. There are flashbacks to the past that have resulted in secrets and undeserved loyalty. There are present situations with domestic violence, sexual assault and mental health issues. There is also a romance thrown in the mix. The ending seemed a bit unrealistic. While I wasn’t overwhelmed with this book, it was on okay read that kept my interest

I really enjoyed this one. This was a slow burn mystery thriller with family drama. I was interested from the very beginning. Tansy gets a visit from a friend she has not seen in 20 years. They have complicated past. The friend wants a favor. Chaos ensues. I loved the twists that I did not see coming. I definitely recommend it. Thank you to Netgalley and Crooked Lane Books for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

When Tansy was 18 years old she had a wild best friend, Selene, but after one particular crazy summer they parted ways and have not seen each other in 20years, that is until Selene walks into Tansy's office looking for help. Selene's daughter, Jupiter attends the college Tansy is working as a counselor. Selene is convinced that Jupiter is in an abusive relationship and demands that Tansy's help. If she doesn’t do as Selene wishes, a long held secret will be revealed that will destroy her life. Selene has never been particularly stable and has alienated Jupiter but Tansy reluctantly agrees to help. If she didn't already have her hands full she becomes entangled in a romance with a new professor... who just so happens to be Selene's brother.

This is a slow burn suspense/domestic thriller that overall I liked. It was twisty and messy enough to keep me interested in what was to come and how deep Tansy is willing to go down the Selene rabbit hole. There were a few places where the story meanders and there's an odd sex scene but overall it is a decent mystery. I had the audio version read by Emily Ellet who was easy to listen to and made the characters come to life.

The Summer We Buried is a fascinating thriller/drama about shattered friendships and familial love, full of dark secrets and unexpected turns. The novel begins slowly, but gradually and carefully tightens the tension through flashbacks to the past, with elements of mental and physical abuse masterfully woven throughout. Beautifully written and gripping.

This was an intriguing thriller that I could not put down. This story follows Tansy as her best friend from 20 years ago Celine shows up demanding she break up her daughters relationship or she will release Tansy darkest secret. Feeling trapped she agrees to meet Jupiter and be her counselor. After meeting Jupiter Tansy realized she may be in over her head with her the family drama and the love she finds with Zach, Celine’s brother.
I really enjoyed this book it was entertaining and kept me engaged. I will admit it’s not the twistiest thriller but I still really enjoyed the characters and did not get bored. I really enjoyed Tansy and Jupiter they were smart strong women that I really related to. I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the narrator. I felt the narrators voice is exactly what I imagine Tansy to sound like. I will admit the voice for Celine was not my favorite but still enjoyed the overall narration. I would like to thank net galley and the publishers for a chance to read this book for an honest review.

I had high hopes for The Summer We Buried. Unfortunately I couldn't get into the audiobook. The narrator's voice wasn't for me. I'm going to buy the ebook instead and will come back to update my review.

This book ended up not being as much of a thriller as I was expecting. The secret between the two women wasn't completely terrible that Tansy could have told the truth so in part she chose to be manipulated by Selene. I really enjoyed the relationship between the two characters and how it is constantly changing. I was surprised by the ending, I didn't see it going that way so I'm happy with that. Overall it was a good character driven story but not many twists or action to add more. I liked the read overall.

I read this one a while back and for some reason I accidentally skipped logging this 🙃

I enjoyed the storyline and the characters. This story shifts and we get bits of the past as well as the present throughout the story. The relationship between Selene and Tansy was pretty interesting and leads up to a pretty crazy ending that I'm sure most won't see coming. I liked the added layer of having Jupiter be the reason they come back together, but also how the relationships between the three paly out.

It is a slow burn psychological thriller, but it held my attention through the whole story. There is enough there to keep you wanting to know what did and what will happen.

Thank you for an advanced copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

I thought the production of the audiobook was done really well. The lackluster part for me was the storyline itself. This book would be great for someone who is new to the thriller/mystery genre. The plot twists were predictable for me and I just wasn't really into the characters/the storylines. Overall I thought it was okay but was a bit disappointed and felt it needed to be fleshed out more.

It’s a no from me. I couldn’t even make it half way through before putting it down. I hope to be able to finish it but I need to switch it up

Tansy and Selene were friends long ago with a history of a summer incident that they have both kept a secret for every year after that. The incident: a murder.

Now years later Selene shows up again in Tansy’s life (she is now a guidance counselor) asking her for a favor after she helped her out that summer long ago.

The favor: to intervene in her daughter Jupiter’s relationship with Colton who she believes is abusing her.

While it did keep me wanting to hear the story until the end (because I was waiting for a shocking twist), it was very predictable and not shocked at all by the turn of events.. I wouldn’t even call it a twist.

It was very slow paced, and a thriller?? Meh… not the kind of thriller I’d expect.

I finished this in one setting. This kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. This is the first book by this Author that I read and I love the writing. It was an easy page turner. I would read more books by this Author.

Two decades ago, college student Tansy fell under the older Selene's spell, mesmerized by her erratic and charming personality and behaviour. They became fast friends, inseparable for a few months. A disturbing incident destroyed their friendship, and Tansy left and cut off all contact with Selene.

In the present, Tansy is working as a college counsellor at the local college, where Selene's daughter, Jupiter, happens to attend. Out of nowhere one day, Selene breezes into Tansy's office stating that she owes her a favour from 20 years ago, and demand that Tansy interfere with Jupiter's personal life and use her status as a college counsellor to destroy Jupiter's relationship with her boyfriend, Colton.

As Tansy and Selene's lives begin to intertwine once again, secrets bubble to the surface, threatening to bring up skeleton's in their closets, long since buried.

This was a delightful, slow burn. I enjoyed it immensely, and the narrator did a great job. The characters were well developed and nuanced, and I was particularly engaged in learning about how things would turn out for Jupiter.

I am grateful for the opportunity to read and review this title. I plan to read more titles from this author in the future.
