Well I can honestly say this did not have a boring moment. This book follows Agent Taggart as she working to become an FBI agent. This leads her into following a troubled young man who they suspected as a member of a cult containing suicide bombers. Which leads her to meeting a psychologist who can put people into hypnotic trances to recall their past life’s. Agent Taggart get wrapped up into researching her own past lives while also trying to see where this cult will next strike.
This book was unique it was a very different plot for a thriller so I will say it was refreshing to read a thriller with a different plot. That being said this plot was all over the place. The multiple past lives and story’s where a little much at times and took away from the overall story. I also felt for a book dealing with a cult would have more to do with the actual cult. I did listen to the audiobook and did really enjoy the narrator , she was engaging and entertaining. I would also like to thank the publishers and NetGalley for the chance to read this book for an honest review.

I was all over the place with my feelings on this book. Sometimes I was totally into it and invested in what was happening. Other times I was confused, board, and saying out loud “wtf is going on.” I found the audiobook slightly confusing at times when going into a chapter that took a minute to figure out where we were. Jumping through time can be tricky that way when listening. Also, you definitely can’t lose focus for a second in a book like this without being thoroughly confused. At the end of it I found it enjoyable, but not necessarily memorable.

I enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed and the story flowed well. I loved the audio version and the narrator was fabulous. Cannot wait to recommend to friends and book groups on Goodreads, Amazon, and Facebook.
Thank you to #Netgalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

FBI Agent Vera Taggert is on the trail of a domestic terrorist group called the Sons of Elijah. The investigation leads her to a famous psychiatrist, Seth Jacobson. She is intrigued in more ways than one. She decides to let him hypnotize her. What she discovers is not exactly what she expected.

Being a person who very seldom reads a blurb, I am a judge a book by it’s cover girl, this story took me by surprise. I expected more of an FBI thriller/mystery tale. And, it is that…but, it is a bit more complicated. This novel delves into the supernatural/reincarnation arena. So…SURPRISE! At first, I was like…hmmm, what have I gotten myself into. But, the story continued to capture my imagination and attention, especially the historical flashbacks. I loved the Montségur sections. Very well researched!

Now, it did get a little “out there” toward the end, especially the part about the way the FBI recruited Vera But, that is the genre. So, I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. It is definitely unique and entertaining.

Kristin Price is the narrator and she is perfect for this book!

The story focuses on special agent Vera Taggart who is an artist recruited to the FBI and is assigned to a cold case of cult suicide bombers. One person of interest is a psychotherapist who engages in "past-life therapy" and had connections to a couple of bombers. Taggert engages in the hypnotherapy herself and subsequently begins to question her own reality.

This story was intriguing, to say the least. However, the intricate pieces of history and entangled storylines and perspectives create difficulty to follow at times. Nonetheless, the novel was highly entertaining and keeps you on your toes every step of the way.

Pleasantly suprised by this one - take your typical crime thriller and give it a culty / reincarnation twist. While some plot points weren't exactly as shocking as the layout implied they were supposed to be, I enjoyed the ride.

Unfortunately this book was not my favorite. I couldn't connect with the characters and some of the content I didn't enjoy. I did like the narrator of the audiobook.

When I read that this book was about a murderous cult I was in. I love reading about cults. I wasn't expecting so much sci-fi. I don't really read sci-fi books but I figured I'd still give this a try. I listened to this book, and got lost so many times. All the back and forth I couldn't really follow. I think if I understood it better I would have liked it more. I thought the concept of the book was different. I thought parts of the ending were a bit odd, but I was truly surprised by it. The author did a great job writing the twists and turns.

I look forward to reading more from this author! Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the chance to listen to the book in exchange for my opinion.

This really wasn't my thing. I felt like it tried too hard and was very slow and dragged out. The narrator probably didn't help as it was hard to distinguish characters and was very monotone in the reading. The book feels like it combines so many different elements as it jumps around that it simply became frustrating.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape audio for the advanced copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

This story started out peeking my interest with the bomb but I soon lost it. It was, for me, hard to follow the characters and I was easily distracted from listening. It has a science fiction presence and I do not have an appreciation for sci-fi stories.
Vera Taggert’s FBI agent’s storyline interested me and I enjoyed listening about her involvement in the case but when it came to Seth Jacobson’s part I lost the story.

This was such a clever story that gripped me from the very first page and didn’t let go until the *BIG* twist at the end it was a real shock. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley.

I think I would have enjoyed this book in print more than I did in audio. The book has flashbacks to several different time periods, there are loads of characters, and while the narrator has a very pleasant voice to listen to, there was not enough variation on the voices for different characters. I was repeatedly confused as to the storyline. However, the story is very intriguing! Straightforward thriller with a supernatural aspect thrown in, and I became interested in some of the history discussed. I went down a rabbit hole on Wikipedia, etc learning about the Cathars! I love to read history, and I was not familiar with this.

DON’T GET CLOSE by Matt Miksa
Publication: 3/8/22 by Crooked Lane Books

Vera Taggart, an artist with a bent for the dark and gothic, is recruited by FBI Special Agent Gina Butler. She is approached at an exhibit of her macabre paintings at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. For her first case after training at the FBI Academy at Quantico she is tasked to a decades old cold case, involving a cabal of suicide bombers operating under the nom de plume of the Sons of Elijah. They’re convinced they have been reincarnated from generations of oppressed and conquered people from civilizations dating back in antiquity. They’re mission across generations is clouded in mystery, and perhaps is revealed in the hidden capstone …. sought by many, but passed down and coveted in obscurity. Taggert is trying to recover from the brutal death of her roommate and comes across a lone figure poised to throw himself off the bridge into the icy waters of the Chicago River. After successfully talking down the troubled Caleb Miller, he later unprovoked sets off a devastating bomb in Chinatown …. wreaking havoc a devastation, reminiscent of the Sons of Elijah. “Tag” meets with his psychiatrist, the renowned Dr Seth Jacobson … an expert on past life regression therapy. Soon, she finds herself undergoing hypnosis in the hope of uncovering relevant clues.
The doctor has actually performed the therapy on not only Caleb, but also has successfully retrieved past life memories from other Sons of Elijah bombers. Her investigations lead to a probable lead for a future attack involving the particle accelerator at the Fermilab, which is researching for the presence of the “C” particle …. the innate site of Consciousness.
Matt Miksa weaves an extremely complex tale with a haunting and tempting premise. Unfortunately his execution misses the mark due to excesses. I feel that most readers will become mired in his overly explained scientific details and philosophizing. Too much time is spent on expositions of past memories. …. although somewhat interesting , they are extremely repetitive. His narrative would have been much more effective without these excesses. His unravelling of details does not result in an exciting or thrilling denouement.
Thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Land Books for providing both an Uncorrected Proof and Audio Book in exchange for an honest review. I personally switched back and forth between the book and the audio. Kristin Price’s voice and inflections brought the multiple characters to life in the “theatre” of my mind.

I was really into the novel until like 2/3 of the way when it really got scientific. I was expecting a thriller and it was… but it has such a strong sci fi feel to it that i kinda got lost. You don’t have to pay a lot of attention throughout to follow the character on their many paths.

I liked the suspense and the action tho. And the narrator was great.

This is not a typical thriller, but it's entertaining. Will appeal to fans of Sarah Pinborough's BEHIND HER EYES looking for a spec twist to the genre.

Did not finish but wanted to! Poor audio quality made it too hard to continue; it would be better if it was an actual narrator and not a computer voice that sounds underwater. I would prefer the actual audio even if it’s not perfectly edited

What a hidden gem! The blurb had me so intrigued I skipped this to the head of my tbr list. Well, to be listened in this case. Kristin Price did a fabulous job narrating. This story seemed to span many genres, mystery, thriller, a little fantasy, romance & historical fiction. It’s definitely not you’re run of the mill FBI procedural & I’m here for that!

I really enjoyed the narrator for this book, she did an excellent job at setting suspense, dialog and exclamations. The story for me was good that mixes past, present, crime fiction, psychological exploration and self discovery. The novel kept my interest as i wanted to n confine to discover what was happening. I loved the cult aspect
