This steamy romcom was everything I didn’t know I needed. First of all, this book is hot! And gets there fast (the opposite of a slow burn). And honestly, that worked for me more than I thought it would. Second, I found I really liked the characters. I wanted to be part of their friend group. I love a good found-family. Third, it had solid writing that advanced the plot so well that I couldn’t put it down. So yeah, a home run.
If you’re looking for a good sapphic romance, this one is for you!
'I hate age gap'.....is something I would have said before reading this book. I honestly just requested this ARC because it's a sapphic romance and I will read basically all of them. BUT I was totally pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this one despite how little an 'age gap relationship with your friends mom' sounds like my type of book.
It is immediately hot and heavy. I am totally shocked how much I like Cassie and Erin together. Like really, I didn't see that coming. I reallllllly liked the romance of this one. It is very sweet and consistent, there is so little drama (outside the one big thing) and I just really like how Cassie and Erin compliment each other. It feels mature while also being really spontaneous and fun.
Overall, I like the romance but felt the other relationships lacked depth. What I didn't really buy into were the friendships. It always talks about how Accacia and Parker and Cassie are such amazing friends, but we don't really see that. Mostly we see Cassie being kind of shitty and the others being kind of distant. I just really don't buy that they are best friends whose friendship is so strong and important to them. I also just didn't really see any development in Parker and Erin's relationship--it was just like there was a magic wand moment. I wish there had been more there.
I also really didn't like the scene where Rachel and Erin are getting their nails done. There is some racism thrown in through the use of kind of harmful stereotypes of vietnamese woman as nail techs that just feels kind of icky and unnecessary.
I enjoyed reading this story and loved the romance element, but am sad to report that for me, it fell pretty flat overall.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Publishers for the opportunity to read an early copy of Mistakes Were Made, out October 11th! This was such a fun read to get me out of a reading slump. Definitely the spiciest book I’ve ever read- very fun and an overall enjoyable time! I had a hard time with Cassie’s actions sometimes and I don’t love the “I didn’t realize my feelings for you until just now” trope, but it was a quick read and definitely worth your time.
This book was incredible! I definitely have to go back and read Meryl Wilsner's other sapphic novel because this one just blew my mind. Wilsner's writing style is impeccable, and the characters were so witty and lovable that you couldn't help but swoon. Definitely recommend <3
I didn't really know where this book was going, but was very much along for the ride! It's so different from Wilsner's other book. The split perspective was great, and dang was this book hot! It had the right bit of yearning to it as well. Even though I knew I was reading a romance, I had no idea how the plot would turn out. Super awesome! A must for your sapphic reads list.
Cassie thinks Erin is just a hot one night hook up (very hot hook up) but the next morning it turns out she is her new college friend's MOM there visiting for family weekend! Cassie and Erin try to avoid the draw they feel to each other but they keep getting into situations where they are in close proximity and left alone. When that happens, expect major steamy moments! They continue to stay in touch over time but keep their "relationship" a secret until it all comes out. When that happens, the responses are not what the reader expects. SO GOOD!
This was a great premise! Wilsner's writing is sharp and funny, and I loved being in the world with these characters. I thought that this one was a tad too long (especially when it came to the potential conflict between Parker, Cassie, and Erin). These sections felt repetitive. I also wanted a little more from Cassie's growth from a professional/education standpoint.
This book was everything I was looking for!!! The age gap was done very well and the spice was very good!!! I can't wait for it to come out so others can enjoy this book as much as I did!!
I really enjoyed this read. I haven’t read an age gap trope in a while so this was refreshing! Cassie and Erin complement each other so well, I was rooting for them from the beginning! The miscommunication (i.e running away instead of talking) annoyed me a bit at times; it felt a bit naive (maybe I’ve just been reading too much of it). Overall it was a sexy, funny, sweet read with lovable characters. Bonus: it features my home state and the one I’m moving to this summer!
I know they say never judge a book by its cover but when I saw Mistakes Were Made's cover, I just couldn't but fall in love with it. The colors are so pretty that I could stare at it for hours and not get bored or tired. When I noticed who the author is, I immediately decided that for once judging a book by its cover is a good thing because Meryl Wilsner is one of the authors I really love. Something to Talk About is one of the books I really really love. (I read it more than once so that's that.)
Mistakes were made is about Cassie, a 21 year old senior, and Erin, the mother of a freshman in Cassie's college, who meet one night at a bar. They flirt and they end up in the back of Erin's car only to meet the next day over breakfast with Erin's daughter and Cassie's good friend. I guess all is good, huh?
I fell in love with both Cassie and Erin in the first chapter. Cassie seemed so arrogant which was so funny and Erin is one hell of a cute, gorgeous, hot woman.
Now, let's talk about the characters!
Cassie
She obviously is more mature than people her age. She does stupid things, like continuously thinking of fucking her best friend's mother. However, she knows how to get shit done. She knows her way around anything and that's probably because of how she was raised. Or wasn't actually. She isn't immune to mistakes or youth stupidity but she does know how to take care of things and who she wants to be and I admire that about her.
Erin
I love this woman. She is such a perfectionist in so many ways. She can get obsessive over things too but underneath that, she is the coolest mom you could ever read about. I loved her chapters. They had so much insight of who she is. I faced difficulty at times understanding her relationship with Parker, her daughter. Without spoiling, I think that at times she wasn't that good if a mother for her. It made sense at times and served the plot but at many scenes I wanted to punch Erin in the face and remind her that Parker is her daughter.
Moreover, I enjoyed therapy scenes so much. It was so accurate how the scenes went and how with every question the therapist asks, Erin was finding something about herself and working on it. I really enjoyed how the complexity of a therapy session was captured on paper.
Add to that, I really loved the pace of the book. It wasn't the type that got you bored because of how slow it is nor was it too rushed. It felt perfectly paced which I really appreciate. I also loved the ending. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a cute romance.
Thanks to NetGally, St. Martin's Press and Maryl Wilsner for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
First of all I wanna thank Netgalley and St. Martin´s Press for providing me this arc. I enjoyed this so much! I read the description and immediately knew this exactly something I needed and would have fun reading. The chemistry between Cassie and Erin blew me away. It was so fun reading about these two characters and I enjoyed the dynamic they both had with the side characters too, The pacing threw me off sometimes but overall I really enjoyed this book.
I honestly loved this book so much! Which was awesome because it was one of my most anticipated releases this year.
“Mistakes Were Made” is called the MILF book on Twitter and it’s a very fitting title. This is the story of Cassie Klein and Erin Bennett who meet at a bar and have a casual one-night stand. It’s fine until the next morning when Cassie goes to breakfast with her best friend, Parker, only to realize they’re meeting Parker’s mom, Erin, the same Erin from the previous night.
I’ll be honest, this started off a little rocky and slow for me. I was worried I wasn’t going to like it because this starts with a literal bang and that’s just not my favorite. I also found Cassie hard to like at first. She comes across as very cocky and that’s my least favorite personality type. However, either Cassie’s personality changed a bit or something because after a while she really grew on me.
This is told from both main characters point of view so it was fun to see how they each reacted to the reveal of who they slept with. I really enjoyed the extra tension the “forbidden” aspect added to the tension and chemistry that was already between them. They have outstanding sexual chemistry and I loved the slow progression of their emotional connection.
I’ll also mention for all the smut lovers out there that you’ll probably really love this one. There is a ton of steam! I didn’t count how many sex scenes there were but I would guess around at least 8? If you blush easily in public while reading smut, I suggest reading this one at home.
This wasn’t the perfect book. There were some pacing issues that caused me to have to re-read a line or two. I also eventually had issues with both Erin and Cassie at times for continuing to keep their relationship a secret. But alas, it is a taboo relationship so it is what it is. It obviously wasn't enough to take away my five stars but I wanted to at least acknowledge them.
I enjoyed this so much and highly recommend it. Not only is it well written it’s just a lot of fun to read.
I received an ARC from St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
When I first read the description of this book and saw the sapphic MILF description, I knew I had to get my hands on this ASAP! This book delivered exactly what I wanted it to but it was much more smuttier than I expected which was definitely a nice surprise. Meryl Wilsner's writing was so fun and easy to get immersed into. I enjoyed watching Erin and Cassie's relationship develop and feeling my heart race each time I worried they would get caught. .
The only issue I found with this book is that there is a problem that was an insinuated to throughout the entire book, that ended up being resolved too easily and conveniently for my taste. But overall, this was super fun and I always love seeing a happy sapphic ending!!
I’m in love. This book is really hot and really cute. I fell in love with Wilsner’s writing in “Something to Talk About” and this new book is something new, very different from the first. But not in a bad way! Wilsner shows us they can brilliantly write any sort of romances and I need this in my life!
The relationship between Erin and Cassie is at the same hot but slowly. Yes, they have sex in the first chapter. And again. And again. And again. BUT the two fell in love in a very slow, very cute way. I really love that.
The two mc are really different but complementary. They are in two different stages of life, but they need each others to make everything better. I really enjoyed that!
Maybe the relationship with Parker (Erin’s daughter and Cassie’s best friend) can be more pregnant and her reaction when she found out about the secret relationship more incisive, but this depends by the fact that there is no Parker pov. I would find a Parker pov really interesting!
However, the romance is cute and I can’t wait to buy this book and To read the next book of this amazing author!
thank you netgalley and st. martin's press for an eARC of this book!
rating: 4 stars
this book was genuinely so so much fun. quick, witty, and hilarious, this book is perfect for romcom lovers who enjoy a little spice in their books.
cassie is such a perfect main character and erin works so well as a love interest. i genuinely found their dynamic so, so fun and their flirting had me kicking my feet and giggling bc i genuinely just ENJOYED it so much. on top of that, cassie is a girlie in stem and erin is a doctor–they're LITERALLY my people?!/!/!/
the side characters also added a fun dynamic to the book and i just loved reading every interaction. nothing felt unnecessary, and all interactions worked so well to the plot.
i wish we elaborated a bit more on parker/erin and the actual divorce and how it damaged their relationship, and i also just wish there was a bit more to be had between erin and cassie. a lot of their dates (ie scenes not involving sex) got summarized into paragraphs that we didn't get to actually experience, which sucked to me as a reader who loves experiencing the little moments. it just left me feeling underwhelmed and like something was missing. rather than actually getting to fully read cassie and erin coming to terms with their feelings, they're quite literally just told "u two are in love with each other"–that's just a huge pet peeve of mine in books, especially when they're meant to be romcoms/romance books.
the third act conflict (which barely existed) was also written kinda weird and just threw me off. i wanted a BIT more drama to it but it fell flat and honestly could have been cut out for how it was resolved. like it didn't matter at all and just made me feel like the ending dragged
all in all, i can see this book becoming a staple sapphic book people recommend, and i'm honestly excited for it
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this advanced copy. Erin and Cassie meet at a bar off campus from the local college during a family weekend and get together. Later they discover they are connected as Erin is the mother of Cassie’s friend, Parker. The writing was good, spice was great, but the book dragged in the middle.
This was a wonderful book. Cassie and Erin's relationship develops quickly, but then is a slow burn. Their feelings slowly begin to deepen while neither want to admit it to themselves much less to each other. I just really felt their connection while reading this and was so happy with the ending. All the sneaking around added a lot of comedy to this story. Fun fast read. I loved Something to Talk About, and this one was even better!
This book surprised me! I really enjoyed the relationship between Cassie and Erin (my first age-gap romance), I wasn't sure how well I'd like the best-friend's-mom part of it, mostly because I was dreading the moment that Parker found out and it all hit the fan. It was handled so well! I loved watching Erin and Cassie grow in their confidence and in their relationship with one another, each one navigating their past relationships and identity within this new relationship.
Miscommunication bugs me, especially when a problem could be solved with a simple conversation but I felt that the few moments of miscommunication were warranted and well done enough that it didn't pull me from the story.
Parker and Cassie's friendship was what I was most worried about as I read - as much as I loved the romance, I loved their friendship too, and I was so glad to see that it survived.
Overall, a wonderful read with great characters, crackling chemistry, and gorgeous romance.
Thank you, Net Galley, for having this book available to download and review!
I am not a “BookToker” or “BookstaGramer” but I sure do love to read, so I pounced at the opportunity to read this book! The cover is absolutely freaking gorgeous and the premise! A FF age gap romance?! Sign me up!!
I absolutely loved the first quarter of the book when Erin and Cassie meet and have schmexy times and establish their relationship.
The other 3/4 of the book? I’m sad to say I was so incredibly disappointed.
One of my pet peeves when reading a book is when an author writes, “And they would have never done that, obviously.” Um, no? It’s not obvious to me? You tell me how a character feels and I choose to feel if something was obvious or not.
A lot of this book felt like filler. I found myself skimming most of it. The scaffolding to support the book was made of, what felt like, shallow relationships among characters, when I know that the author did not intend for the book to come across that way.
***spoilers***
The ending of the book was very anticlimactic. One would assume an age gap romance between a woman and her friend’s mother would have a conflict about the friend finding about their relationship? The last 10% of the book was, “Surprise! I knew for the last six months! Go live happily ever after!” ☹️I get it. Sometimes slow burn and angst can be too much.
But this book really didn’t have either. No slow burn that made me bite my nails or angst that made me throw my phone down on the couch and walk away from too many feelings!
TL;DL: Although the cover is gorgeous and the premise is fantastic, this book fell so flat that I can’t recommended it to others 😩😭
Thank you so much for allowing me to read and review your titles. I really not the opportunity!
I do appreciate it and continue to review books that I get the chance to read.
Thanks again!
