I loved this! Like, way more than I expected to like it! The premise was interesting, and honestly it followed through. The amount of YEARNING these two do for each other?? So good. I don't even have cohesive thoughts because all I can think of is that this was excellent. Romance is not usually my thing but this blew me away.
I did find the writing/internal monologues dragged on a little bit (especially towards the end where the main issues Erin and Cassie were dealing with just kept getting repeated). But overall this is an A+ romance. Super fun, enjoyable, and nice and spicy. Definitely recommend!
Thank you to St. Martin's Griffin for the eARC!
So! I must say I’m in love with the book. Something about romance novels I enjoy is that they always make me feel good about life. Like, yes. This type of happiness does in fact exist and there are people who get to live it and that’s kinda beautiful. Granted this is a fictional novel but it also reminded me of a similar relationship I’d had as well. It was bittersweet. I think Meryl Wilsner does a really good job of making romance look and feel …… easy. The characters always *click* so well with each other. Truly a romance novelist to keep an eye on, but maybe I’m just a fan girl at the point.
I loved the introduction to Cassie and Erin. I loved that Cassie was so forward and assertive. Straight forward with her intentions when she first met Erin. I loved how we got to feel Erin’s feelings on the whole age gap situation and how her divorce and being the parent of an adult child impacts that as well. There was so much complexity in there that it was hard not to root for them even when inevitable situations popped up. I also love love loved the friendship between Cassie and Acacia and even her dynamic with Parker. Erin’s concern for her relationship with her daughter was expressed fairly well. It’s nice to see such close knit women friendships that are able to also withstand major falling outs and everyone gets to mature and see each other’s side of things and make Peace.
The spice was there. We received a lot of it in this book but it makes sense why we did. It added to the story and there were moments the spice was implied and not given explicitly either which worked great for pacing.
My only doubts about the story would possibly be pacing at certain moments that had me going back to reread passages and the lack of Parker. She’s an integral part of the story and even just one POV from her or something would have been really great for solidifying her role in this story as a plot point beyond just being Erin’s daughter and Cassie’s friend. Oh! I would have also loved a little more time into Erin’s everyday life as well that wasn’t involved with thoughts of Cassie or Parker. It could be my own fault but I also can’t recall much about what Erin actually does for a job and we never learn much about her clinic except for the fact that everyone else didn’t really get it either but it’s okay because Erin was doing what made her happy.
The conclusion had me a mess! I wasn’t sure if I was happy or anxious or what but I adored it. For some odd reason I kept waiting for a third act breakup to happen because it felt like the big moment of climax hadn’t come yet. Yes, the moment Parker had found out and shut Cassie out could have been it but it didn’t really feel like the climax of that plot point considering I was just as clueless and confused about her behavior along with Erin and Cassie. None of this actually hinders my ability to enjoy the story however, I will say this: Any future books by Meryl Wilsner will be on my TBR automatically. I enjoy their writing so much. It’s easy and smooth and fun.
This is a story I will recommend to friends and those who are curious. I look forward to owning a physical copy when it’s published.
This book was full of spice! Overall I enjoyed the book however I found there to be many times where things were too far fetched. Also, there were some major cringeworthy moments when Erin’s daughter acted way younger than her age. I like to think I still remember what it was like to be in college and I can’t remember ever being that whiny or childish.
Phew buddy this sure did bring the heat 🥵 this was the perfect mix of rom com and some good Ole spicy entertainment. Had enough conflict with out it being over done.
HOLY Spicy MILF book! I will just say this one may come with a glass of milk because the spice is there! Meeting someone in a bar is already grounds for an intriguing story but this one takes a bite out of that cake. If you are looking for romance this is not the book for you but if you want a little humpty dumpty....with a lil bow chicka bow wow....then here you are!
Went into this book with high expectations and wow it did NOT disappoint!! Truly cannot wait to reread this book and to have others get their hands on it!
Really enjoyed this story! I love a good rom-com that isn't very conflict-heavy. Just a good/spicy read! I typically shy away from books with big age gaps, but this was so well done I was pleasantly surprised. Loved the friends and the support of the daughter at the end. I will definitely be reading the authors other books! :)
This is the I met your mom in a bar and we hooked up book. Meeting someone randomly, Cassie ends up basically hooking up with her bf's mom which she has no idea of before the fact. This was much more steamy than any of the other books have I read by Meryl. I enjoyed it, nothing surprised me. I received a copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Yes!! Love MILF content!! This was the perfect balance of smut and story, I was so surprised. Usually I'm used to the one big love scene after build up and then nothing else, but no these characters had a more realistic healthy sex drive which I appreciated😂 It made me verrry nervous about when would be the moment the best friend out and I loved the route the author chose to go. This was such a fun read. 5 stars, thank you NetGalley!
Man, this is such a tough review for me. I was soooo excited for a lesbian romance. The premise for this really gripped me. I mean we had an age gap, best friends mom, forbidden romance, and it was sapphic. But it just fell a bit too short for .me. It was too fluffy. it tried to have angst, but it never delved deep enough into the characters for it to really make me *feel* anything. Also the resolve at the end happened so quick even though the book felt so long. HOWEVER, I did really enjoy the epilogue, and fo that reason I would give this author another chance and read something else from them. This is a new to me author so I’m not sure if this is debut for them or not, but I will be looking. Overall, this was a 3 ⭐️ rating for me, and I’d probably recommend it to a select few people.
This book was given to me as an advanced readers copy by the author and publisher for my honest opinion. Thank you so much.
Okay this had such a fun plot line. Dating to your best friends mom?!? I was like oh boy what am I getting myself into?!
Cassie and Erin were honestly so cute!!! Cassie is best friends with Acacia and Parker….Erin is Parker’s mother!! They meet unknowingly at a bar on Parents Weekend. They connect instantly expecting just a passionate one night stand, and then well it’s a bit messy from there.
I really loved the plot line, the characters and the chemistry between Cassie and Erin was fire, some of these scenes oh my goodness! I wanted Cassie and Erin together because of how they made each other feel. It was a shocking but beautiful connection!! I also loved seeing Parker, Acacia and Cassie interacting they remind me of me and my closest friends🥹
BUT it was hard for me to get over the lying bit of the relationship :( they kept their growing flirtation a secret and I felt really bad for Parker!! It all works out in the end though so I was happy! plus I’m a sucker for a forbidden love. I will not go into details too much cause I don’t want to post spoilers but it was such a fun and flirty read! I highly recommend and I will be reading more by this author for sure!!
I am so happy I got to read this book and received this ARC. Special thank you to Net Galley and St. Martins Press for the advanced digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review! I am so thankful.
This book releases on 10/11/2022 and I highly recommend it!
I LOVED Mistakes Were Made so much! I absolutely flew through it. The character development was fantastic—the banter between Cassie and Erin was wonderful and it was actually a realistic story. I was curious how this was going to work when I read the synopsis, but it was perfect. And the steam!!! Omg. What an absolute delight of a book, give me literally anything Meryl Wilsner writes and I will happily accept.
My thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance review copy.
This was a pretty fun book! The characters were well developed and the story was pretty funny and cute. The only issue I had was I felt like the pacing fluctuated quite a bit. Otherwise this was very enjoyable!
Potential spoilers ahead!
The first half of this book was a little boring but I managed to really enjoy the last part. Once you get through the meet-cute and denial/drama/scandal part, I really liked it! I was worried the end would be like all your other rom-coms, drama ensues and then is resolved to a happy ending - voila! But I was pleasantly (sort of) surprised that everything was resolved fast and happily, with not a whole lot of anxiety in between (for me).
The only surprise I had was that I was expecting there to be more laughs, I don't think there were any for me. I also would like more descriptions on why the characters found each other attractive instead of "her tits were amazing" or "God, she was hot", etc.
I absolutely hated Parker in the beginning but there is some character development towards the end, I get why she's written the way she is.
The sex scenes were fine but forgettable, maybe I read too much erotica! These ones are pretty tame - I really did enjoy seeing the characters bond when they were "dating" though. A very sweet read!
3.5/5
I was disappointed that I could not get into this book. When I read romance novels, I have to get a really detailed description of the characters from the get go, so I can really imagine everything playing out. I don't feel like I got that with this book.
For Cassie Klein and Erin Bennett, the saying mistakes were made after a one night stand was a huge understatement. Meeting a stranger in a bar followed by scorching sex is one, but meeting the same person again the next day, another. Especially in Erin’s case, where the sex bomb you bedded last night is your daughter’s college friend. Then again, a one off would have suffice, but what happens when you keep wanting to do it?
When temptations arise, you could slay them, you could ignore them, but the ladies were helpless to the chemistry and attraction. When lines that were already blurred and the blinders come off, physical becomes emotional. A quirky, hot age gap romance where the impossible becomes possible with a happy ending.
I just reviewed Mistakes Were Made by Meryl Wilsner. Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC.
Review: Mistakes Were Made was one of my most highly anticipated reads of the year and it was everything I wanted it to be! It was a really fun read filled with witty banter, lots of bisexual representation, sexual chemistry, incredible/ frequent spice, and suspense hoping Cassie and Erin didn’t get caught. I also really loved the book’s overall theme of doing what’s true to oneself rather than what society expects of you. As Cassie so eloquently put it, “Fuck should.”
My only dislikes of the book were that the pacing was weird, it felt like there was little to no transition between scenes, and the resolution was less suspenseful than I thought it would be.
This book felt very real though as Cassie struggles with abandonment issues while working to be a better friend to those closest to her and to admit her feelings while Erin must contend with their age gap in the face of societal norms and potential judgment from her family and peers.
Thank you to @NetGalley and @StMartinsPress for the ARC!
I thoroughly enjoyed Meryl's book Something's Gotta Give and thought this would be a similar sweet story with very little spice and I was quite enthusiastic to realize rather immediately that this book has quite a bit more chilli peppers than the last book! Not only that, but as a person who doesn't usually read age gap romances this story kept me HOOKED throughout the whole book and ended with me in tears over the love and emotions found within it. Hardcore recommend this one!
I'm just going to say it - this book was hot and there's plenty of it. It was /chef's kiss/. For the rest of the plot, their relationship was fun and they really the embodied the overall idea of the book, which was not caring what other people thought. Erin and Cassie both brought out the best in each other and it was very sweet. Why I'm not rating this book super high -- I had such a big ick with Cassie being in undergrad. I honestly don't mind the large age gap, but the mention of dorms and dining halls was really unsettling with this amount of smut. It just reminds me of when I was young and stupid in college and it makes me support their relationship a little less (even if it's just a "projecting onto Cassie" moment). Like despite them being two consenting adults, it makes Cassie seem a lot less mature than she's made out to be.
This book is the complete opposite of a slow burn, it is red hot right from the first chapter! This book has great spice and despite age gap not being a trope I generally go for I didn’t think about it much in a way that detracted from the story. I will say the romance didn’t give enough beyond the spice, but I suppose the long distance and sneaking around makes it logistically hard for a swoon worthy romance. I would recommend this book for fans of spicy and/or age gap romances.
