This was such a great surprise of a book.

The story is about Persephone and how she lives with diabetes and grief throughout her adolescence.

This book was beautifully written which made me want to turn the page every time I finished one.

5/5 would recommend:)

(Got the arc from NetGalley)

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read an eARC of this book.

TW: grief, death, abuse, cancer

This was an interesting, quick read. The story revolves around Persephone trying to get through school, issues at home after the loss of a family member, all while trying to manage her recently diagnosed diabetes.

The beginning was easy to jump into and I thought the first 1/3rd was enjoyable, but then near the middle the pacing slowed down and I found the writing a little frustrating. I can see why the constant definitions for all the clinical terms were needed, but then when every word kept getting defined it was a bit jarring. The "search :___" bits got a little repetitive for me.

The plot was good, I just wish we delved more into some of the characters and their relationship with Persephone. I feel like we needed to see a bigger talk with her mother and Alexander.

I liked the way the story narrated the present and then showed us a parallel of last year before the big event. It reminded me of the show 'This is Us' which I thought was something different.

It was an insightful read and hopefully will make everyone more aware and understanding of people with chronic conditions.

Trigger Warnings: This book discusses grief, death, abuse, cancer, etc. It was a lot darker than what I thought it was going to be after reading the synopsis.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC of "Sugar" by Carly Nugent.

I loved this book a lot and I really wanted the main character to be loved and cared for because she truly deserved better. I didnt expect most of the plotlines and it was such a great read overall.

I really enjoyed this book, it was well written with well devloped charcaters and a storyline that was executed really well. It was both chillingly dark and upliting and heartwarming in equal measures. A really good book that you should definitely check out.

An enjoyable YA read that works like a character study. I liked the realistic take and exploration of the character’s struggles and experiences.

Persephone is a young woman who has diabetes and is living with a slightly unstable home environment. She's in trouble at school and the reasons for this unfold throughout the book. There are some interesting ideas and its the most realistic portrayal of diabetes I've read in a YA novel but I struggled slightly with the writing at times. It's a quick read and definitely educational.

This book starts off with our main character, Persephone, getting called a cunt by some new kid named Alexander after defending herself when a girl treats her like her diabetes contagious. She gets in trouble for it and her friend Joseph looks into the kid. It takes like sixty pages for us to get to where we are in the synopsis. Persephone finds a dead body. Here we start to learn that Persephone feels like her diabetes is retribution because she kept telling her dad she hated him and then he died. She thinks this women did something to deserve her death and it’s the key to everything going on with her. I liked Persephone’s character arc as a whole. Her mom cares about her but it kinda checked out from grief. There’s also her cousin-not-cousin Steven whose dealing with abuse and wants to be chronically ill. I’m still a bit confused on his character. I don’t forgive Alexander and wish we’d learned more about Joseph to make him the way he is. This book felt short to me. It’s also the first book I’ve read in YA where the main character has diabetes. I learned a lot and it’s a unique perspective in the genre that we need more of!
