(First of all, thank you so much NetGalley and Publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion)
As a woman scientist, I'm so glad to read this book with which I learn a lot of more important women innovators. I love to know better women like Rosalind Frankling, Marie Curie but also with this book I got to know a lot of women I didn't heard in my life, that they were awsome and do a great job that change our world. It's crazy that people don't know that they even existed. It's crazy that you read papers and you imagine a man after a surname. So I think this book and similars are so important for people to read.
Thank you for a copy of this book in exchange for honest feedback. I think right away that the title & cover are interesting and eye-catching. I would def pick this up on my own at a store or library. However, I want to address something that seems a bit superficial, but I think is important. I read a lot of women's history books like this that are basically collections or lists of biographical information. There are plenty out there on all sorts of themes. What sets books apart from one another (imo) is 1) layout/design and 2) innovative information/research or addressing a gap when needed. I think that talking about women in STEM is a great theme. There are so many people in this book that I didn't know anything about (I am not a hard scientist nor have I had much training or info about this subject, so some are familiar but not all). I think that one of the weaknesses is that the presentation is not as good as other books of similar theme. I am not sure that if this is due to the proof stage where there are not any pictures or better layout. So, from here on the review is just about the content (but I still stand by my point that there should be SOMETHING in the bulk of the content that shows the women or their projects. I saw some at the end of the book but not a lot. I understand that there are some copyright concerns, but I think if this is the case, then a change up of the layout/presentation would really help this book stand apart from the many others.
The content is quite good. There are a lot of women I haven't heard of, despite reading a lot of themed books like these. I think the content was clear and easy to read. I liked the themed chapters, so one can find different things in this like Global Health, Protecting the Earth, Healthcare for Children, etc. I think this reflects the variety and amount of work that went into this collection. I think the author did a great amount of research as it is evident by the summaries of bio/contributions in short passages -- that is not an easy achievement. One has to summarize a lot of information and convey it accessibly AND be entertaining. I think the tone was appropriate, it was a mix of informal and technical. It conveyed authoritative voice in the facts, while at the same time feeling like a conversation or lecture. I really think the content is great. I appreciate the work that the author/publisher have done to collect the research on these women and their scientific contributions. I learned a lot!
