Spectacular story and narration style. First book I read from this author but I plan to read more from her. Thank you NetGalley, publisher and author, for allowing me to read a free copy of this book in exchange for my review.
Maggie Scott lives in the same street as Cady and Josh who are away. She notices that there is movement in Cady and Josh's house and when she knocks, the door is answered by Sarah who says she is housesitting. Initially seeing nothing untoward Maggie returns to her own house believing that she might make a new friend in Sarah. But the housesitter, on the other side of the door, is in extreme panic mode as she thought nobody had seen her...
Lies, secrets and betrayals and intrigue are at the heart of this intense read written by Karen McQuestion. Something abhorrent happened at 214 Palmer Street and the twists within this tale, told using a mixture of viewpoints, lead up to a shocking conclusion. Highly recommended.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Bookouture via NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.

I had to give this one 3/5 stars as it just didn't grab me but saying that I would read more from this author as I can see the potential. I found this book great at the start but a little predictable by the middle, also I am one who isn't a fan of the then and now between chapters, I found that a bit confusing.
This was a well written and unique story. I really enjoyed it, even though the characters weren't very likeable. I liked that it wasn't a typical Hollywood happy ending for everyone. I would definitely read another by this author.
I feel like this is yet another 'thriller' which just wasn't very 'thrilling'. You could easily figure out where the story was heading and where it was leading to. Yet another story where I have no connection to the characters or care about what's going on with them. Especially when they made such ridiculous decisions that will make you sigh out loud. It was an easy enough read despite these problems so I made it through quite quickly.
3 solid ⭐
The blurb doesn't really give you much to go on. You would think Maggie plays a big part in the book, but we hear about her like twice, so that was odd.
There's a bunch to follow along with ~ a now and then timeline, "Her" and just about every character tells a bit of the story. There were a couple different mysteries going on too.
I did have the "Her" figured out before it came to light. Also, I called what happened with Jeremy pretty quickly. Didn't really care for the why of the who in the whodunit with the rock at all.
Childhood friends ~ Kirk, Gavin and Clarice were all unlikable characters. Phil seemed like a nice fella and Judy was a great MIL.
My heartbeat did begin to pick up a little around the 70% mark, but then slowed back down and the remainder of the book sort of dragged and I was ready for it be wrapped up. I was pleased with how it ended right before the epilogue.
It was a quick, but slow going at times, read. I would give this author another try.
*Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and Karen McQuestion for the ARC. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*
I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of 214 Palmer Street by Karen McQuestion. I was thrilled to receive a copy for free in exchange for my honest review.
Gripping. Thrilling. Heart Pounding. Fast Paced. These are all words I would use to describe Karen McQuestion's novel 214 Palmer Street. From the very beginning, I was sucked into the story line and couldn't wait to see what would happen.
I loved the way the author set up the different chapters. Part of it went back and forth between the past and present. It also switched back and forth between the main character and another character simply known as "her". This may sound like the book would be hard to follow, but it wasn't confusing at all. The first half of the book, I thought I knew who "her" was, but I quickly realized it couldn't be who I thought it was and figured it out.
There were many twists and turns that kept me guessing, and I wasn't sure who the "bad guy" was going to be. I'll say that I was happy with who it turned out to be . . . I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't read it yet. The ending was a bit bittersweet, but I was delighted with the way Karen McQuestion wrapped it up.
Even though this novel was somewhat reminiscent of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, 214 Palmer Street by Karen McQuestion is a step above it. This novel was well-written and kept me on the edge of my seat. I completely lost track of time and was surprised at the time when I finished reading this story. Five out of five stars is what I gave 214 Palmer Street by Karen McQuestion.
Karen McQuestion never disappoints me. I've read and enjoyed quite a few of her books. This is the best one yet. So edge of your seat and guessing who was going to be left standing.
This book takes you on a trip that you won't see coming. Not completely anyway. Friends since childhood with huge secrets. Each trying to live a good life but always seeming to intersect with each other. Two men and a woman. Friends or enemies. Both men are married yet they can't seem to stay away from this female. What kind of power does she have over them. Or is it just they are weak men.
Sarah and Kirk are happily married. She's been attacked and Kirk is right there to help. He does everything for her. But when she has questions about his past he just blows them off and doesn't want to talk about it. What can he be hiding. How will it affect them moving forward. Or will it.
The sheriff, Gavin, has a lot to lose if he gets caught having an affair. Not only his wife but possibly his whole career. He's good at his job and he loves his wife. But he too has many secrets. Gavin, Kirk and Clarice. Childhood friends. Adult... What?? Are they friends, enemies, casual partners. Just what are they up too. Sarah is bound to find out after learning a few things from her mother in law.
When Sarah goes missing Kirk is beside himself with worry. He calls his friend, the sheriff, and insists he put out a missing person report. What happens to these people is a breath stopping scene. One you can picture happening as it plays out. It's both sad and closure. It will bring tears to your eyes and have you holding your breathe. It made me cringe several times. I wanted to know what happened all those years ago and certainly found out.
This book leaves not loose ends. Everything is answered. All your questions. Most of the characters are so likable but of course there are a few that just grate on your nerves. Makes you want to slap them. As much as I loved Kirk he really got on my nerves many times. Sarah I loved though found her to be a bit nosy. Good thing maybe. Clarice I despised and I straight up hated Sheriff Gavin. The secondary characters, some I liked and one I was on the fence about.
This was a fun one. One I didn't figure out. It had quite a few twists going one and a lot of action. Flowed smoothly and kept you guessing. This book was great. I enjoyed it so much.
Thank you #NetGalley, #KarenMcQuestion, #Bookouture for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this book.
5/5 stars and it was fantastic. A must read for McQuestion fans.
Karen McQuestion has penned a winner!
I have to say any book that uses my name has to be one of my favorite books. I was reading 214 Palmer Street by Karen McQuestion when a character came to my attention by the name of Grace Pisanelli! I remembered her telling me she was going to name a character after me but, I had forgotten. The time between books and my age may have had something to do with that. I remember my husband asked me at the time if Karen was going to use my first name or my last. I didn’t know. Well…he is very happy that his family name is in the book. I am honored to be called Grace. Thank you Karen! That was a special moment I won’t forget.
On to the book. I couldn’t figure out where the book was going and I just had to keep reading. I don’t often read the synopsis beforehand so, sometimes I am a little bit blind. The book has several twists and turns. I wasn’t sure which one was going to be the beginning of the end. I enjoyed the story line a lot! I kept wondering what each character was up to. This is one of those books you just have to keep reading. You have several characters you think may have done a dirty deed and several that you knew were totally innocent. You do need to watch out for those that look innocent. They may be the guilty one!
The character development was spot on. You have the hotsy totsy woman that flirts with all the men. There is the police chief, the loving and doting husband, the old lady that is not very tech or safety savy and the innocent wife and the high school friend that ran away years ago. They are perfectly developed to play their parts. Some of them will surprise you.
If you love a good Psychological Suspense, then this book is for you. If you’re not sure if this genre is for you, give this one a try. I think the story has many facets that you will like and you might find yourself hooked. I have enjoyed every book that Karen has written and 214 Palmer Street is right up there with the best of them. I loved it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from #Netgalley, #Bookouture and #KarenMcQuestion. All opinions expressed are completely my own.
Life in a small town, where the people you grow up with becoming the mayor or chief of police. And when something happens, like getting struck in the head in your backyard by an unknown assailant, you hope it can get solved. But for Sarah, it's not her hometown; it's her husband Kirk's.
Sarah thought she had a dreamy life, but she began to question everything after her accident, including her husband's devotion. Old friendships harbor secrets from the past, and Sarah is determined to figure out what happened. There are wealthy families and mysterious death, and Sarah realizes that she has some things she needs to figure out.
214 Palmer street is a fast-paced thriller that will make you take a closer look at those around you if you're from a small town. I enjoyed the characters and the clues throughout the book. I could not put this book down until I figured out what had happened.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. This book caught my interest and started off really good. It lagged a little bit in the middle and was somewhat predictable. Overall, it was an ok, and mostly enjoyable read.
The description of 214 Palmer Street doesn’t do the actual story justice. A psychological thriller that raises more questions than it answers. I was annoyed and hooked in equal measures.
I enjoyed the plot and the way it played out, but Sarah and her husband Kirk annoyed the hell out of me. Sarah is just such a wet blanket. I just wanted to shout at her and tell her to stand up for herself, to do what she wants to do, not what anyone else wants her to do! Meanwhile, Kirk is just overbearing with his love, which borders on control. I know his heart is in the right place, but come on, give a girl some space!
That being said, if the author, Karen McQuestion, wanted her characters like that, then she has done an excellent job, that is exactly how they come across. I sort of worked out what was going to happen pretty early on, although I didn’t realise who ‘her’ was until quite close to the end! It was fun to discover how and why the ending played out as it did and the scenarios that occurred along the way.
I am lucky enough to be a part of Books on Tour for this, so thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review an ARC of 214 Palmer Street by Karen McQuestion.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me to read (and listen to) an ARC of this book. This book was just okay for me. It was a quick read with an easy to follow plot. The plot turned out to be fairly predictable in my opinion.
This was such a gripping storyline that pulls you in in immediately! You will immediately get intrigued by Sarah who is a very nervous house sitter once she accidentally meets nosy neighbor, Maggie. Why is Sarah so secretive? You will lose sleep over this chilling plot line. I will definitely be reading more books by this author! I'm grateful to Netgalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy to read and review.
I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book surprised me in a good way, with its fast paced writing, and I have to say, the plot twist really threw me off. I thought for sure the story is following a certain typical thriller villain plotline, but I was wrong! A lot of Sarah's actions was downwards illogical and borderline on idiotic, and even after the grand reveal, I wasn't convinced. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book.
The perfect couple does exist or so it seems on the outside. Sarah is living the perfect life anyone could be jealous of, she has a doting and devoted husband, lives in a great neighbourhood, her in laws love her and she is comfortably rich. But one incident shakes that security blanket off her and things escalate, leaving her questioning those she trusted.
The story is told through multiple POVs, the chapters are short and fast paced. I kept guessing what was happening and was slightly thrown off when the real culprit came to light.
My curiousity was piqued till the end when I found out whose voice was the main narrator.
However, the book could have done with fewer chapters since I felt bored with some details.
If you are looking for a fast paced, binge worthy domestic mystery/thriller, pick this one up right away!
214 Palmer Street is a good paced mystery thriller but I would not say that it is a psychological thriller.
The blurb does not reveal any story of the novel so you go pretty much blindsided as to what is this thriller really about and is a good predictable story after 30% mark. The decisions of the characters are really dumb and questionable sometimes in my opinion. I still have so many questions about this novel and I am scratching my mind to understand the why's and how's. I am neutral on this novel because the pace was good and I finished reading it.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture.
Triggers: Mention of anxiety and depression, brain injury
#FirstLine ~ At first, Sarah disregarded the knocking on the front door.
Oh my goodness, this book was so good! I loved it. So many secrets, so many twists that kept me buzzing through the pages. I was so engrossed that I read it so fast. Be warned that you will have a hard time putting this book down and it will take up residence in your head when you are needing to set it down to get other things done! I even dreamt about it. It is one of those books you will not walk through, rather you will sprint...full speed ahead and will be out of breath when you finish!
Sorry this book wasn’t for me
Was boring and nothing really to it

214 Palmer Street by Karen McQuestion is psychological suspense thriller about one house with a secret and a woman with nothing to lose. Sarah Aden tells Maggie Scott, the elderly neighbor of the Caldwells’ at 214 Palmer Street, that she’s the housesitter. At the last minute, Cady asks Sarah to stay for the month that she’s gone. Since she’s warm and pleasant, Maggie is happy that the house won’t be empty for so long but inside Sarah’s panicking. No one was supposed to see her there. Sarah is on a mission. There’s a secret buried with the house and she is determined to discover the truth. What Sarah doesn’t know is that someone else knows that she’s in the house. Someone else suspects that the house holds the key to a mystery that she has spent decades trying to unravel. Will the truth be revealed?
Psychological suspense thrillers have grown in popularity and Karen McQuestion has found a new genre to explore. From the opening chapter, I am intrigued with the idea of a mysterious person inside a house that’s supposed to be empty. With alternating points of view, the story takes the reader on the twists and turns of a wild roller coaster. I enjoyed that the story wasn’t so complicated that my head was buzzing with so many details and red herrings that I failed to pick up on the clues but it wasn’t too simple that I figured out the secret before it was revealed. It had characters to like, characters to hate and characters that you aren’t sure you can or should trust. Even right to the end, you weren’t sure if all was truly well with how the events played out. Overall, I really enjoyed and recommend 214 Palmer Street.
