When I first started this book I thought it was going to be exceptionally good but for me it went a bit downhill. The story was a bit predictable and the characters a bit bland . Nothing really new with this book but I would be willing to try another from this author . Only 3 stars I’m afraid
I thought the was overall a suspenseful quick read that kept you guessing . It’s just a good quick read . Thanks for letting me review this book to Netgalley and the publisher
I listened to the audio version and enjoyed the narration. It really seemed to bring life to the story! I thought the book synopsis sounded interesting but it had a slow start and it took awhile to grab my attention. I didn’t feel like the book was anything mind blowing, just an average thriller.
This book is a jaw dropping read.
Sarah married Kirk Aden, they had the perfect marriage. Kirk's best friends as children were Gavin, Clarice, and Jeremy who all hung out in a bomb shelter behind Kirks house on 214 Palmer Street. When Jeremy went missing the 3 friends formed a life bond of secrecy.
Sarah has now been attacked and on a mission to uncover truths from gaps she didn't have answer for. Is it best to leave the past in the past? Some secrets can never remain hidden.
What a riveting read!
This review is about 214 Palmer Street by Karen McQuestion. I got this book via @netgalley and it comes out in early April.
It starts out quite intriguing with a woman staying in a house that is not her own. She is almost caught, right at the start of the book. It continues on and you get to meet new characters that are rather flat and stereotypical. But the story has a decent amount of action in it and a quick pace which makes it a fun read.
The story itself was rather predictable and the characters a bit bland. Fortunately, the book wasn't too long and had a decent pace.
I loved the blurb for 214 Palmer Street and couldn't wait to read it. Bookouture has done a fantastic job marketing it, and I was hooked right from the beginning.
Sarah wakes up in the hospital, having been hit over the head just outside the back of her own house. It got off to a great start, but this didn't continue through the rest of the book for me. This didn't feel thrilling for a psychological thriller, and it had quite a predictable ending.
There are multiple layers of mystery and intrigue to follow, and it was cleverly put together. I switched between the Kindle and the audio versions, but neither held my attention particularly well. The plot moved back and forth between current events and the events in Kirk's life before he met Sarah and in the present day.
The characters were shady and had hidden agendas. I didn't like Kirk's character with his lying, overbearing nature and hated that all was forgiven. Unfortunately, this tells the tale of another gaslighting, controlling husband and his wife, which seems to be a common theme of late.
This was an easy read and relatively short, so I got through it quickly. There are only four main characters: Sarah, her husband Kirk, her best friend Clarice and Kirk's best friend, who also serves as the town's bad cop. It explores an old mystery. It flows well, and I enjoyed the narrator's voice.
Overall though, it was a light and easy read.
Karen McQuestion is without question the new queen of suspense in books! I am making it official. After reading 214 Palmer Street no one would argue with me. Not really surprising if you read any of her other books. But 214 Palmer Street takes suspense to the next level. At one point my hands were shaking and my stomach felt like I was on a roller coaster with anxiety and anticipation. It's kind of like when you really don't want to do something but you know you have to see it through. In 214 Palmer Street McQuestion gives us rich characters, complete backgrounds so there is no question of who the characters are and a plot line with so many twists and turns I felt like I needed Dramamine. If you want to read a book that will hold your interest from beginning to end and leave you wanting more than you need to read 214 Palmer Street. Actually read any of Karen McQuestions books. You will thank me!
Imagine your laundry basket is overflowing, your boss is unhappy and the kids/cats/partner/neighbors are acting out. Yet the sun is shining and you decide to take a break, head out to the beach for a day of fresh air. Then this is the book you want, next to your sunscreen and pack of cookies.
It is an easy read, with only four main characters: the protagonist Sarah, her best friend Clarice, her hubby and his best friend, who is also the bad cop in town. An old mystery is being brought up by Sarah's mother in law and she decides to investigates. Yes, it is easy, it flows and there is absolutely nothing interesting happening, that is why this is an absolutely perfect beach read. Your thoughts can wonder over the white sands and golden reflection on the water, while your eyes are still following sentences and yet, you will not miss a clue or any red herring.
Truth be told: I wasn't on a beach when I read this in a day, but in bed with the flu, reading in between fever spikes. Also perfect for this kind of day.
A sincere thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for an ARC in exchange of an honest review.
From the start of "214 Palmer Street" I knew I would be hooked. You can tell that you are about to jump into a tangled web of multiple peoples messy lives. This book has 4 narrators, but in the end only one is truthful to themselves, and others involved in the story. I always enjoy not knowing who to believe. Creating a believable friendship and connection that started as teens and to develop it in a novel is so interesting to me. How a writer can accomplish so much history for characters in such little time is a feat. I really enjoyed this mystery/thriller novel from Karen McQuestion and can't wait to read more from her.
Thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for the opportunity to review this ARC.
3.5⭐️
The beginning was a little slow to catch my attention, but picked up momentum throughout the story. I enjoyed the ending but I do think it was somewhat predictable. Overall, it was a good story but nothing amazing.
Definitely a creepy thriller! Wow... I recommend not reading this one at night... Intense but the right amount of intensity. I enjoyed the storyline and the writing style was top notch. If you are in the market for a thriller, go ahead and start reading this one!
214 Palmer Street is an enjoyable, quick domestic thriller to read. Some of the plot is surprising and some predictable, but overall there was enough suspense going on to keep me reading to find out more. You may not like some of the characters who are “best friends,” because they have to be in order to keep their secret. But I don’t need a book where I love all the characters. In fact, that makes things a bit more interesting. I felt it’s definitely worth a read and recommend it. Thank you to netgalley and Bookouture for an advanced readers copy in exchange for my opinion.
This mysterious story ultimately connects three people who were friends when they were teenagers. As the book opens we find that Sarah is unconscious due to a head injury. We also have Maggie who saw the blinds moving in her neighbor's house. Knowing that her neighbors were away on vacation, nosey Maggie intends on finding out who it was behind those blinds.
Meanwhile, Sarah is now at the hospital and barely remembers what got her there. Who struck her and left her for dead? While this story shifts time frames and characters, the pieces of a complex puzzle slowly fall into place, and this includes why Sarah was hit and who might have hit her.
Lies, secrets and betrayals play right along with intrigue in this captivating and intense read by Karen McQuestion. Something nefarious definitely happened at 214 Palmer Street and in this chilling book twists and turns lead to a shocking conclusion.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
I enjoyed this book enough to seek out a couple of other stories by this author. Although I realised fairly early on the significance of the underground shelter, I cared enough about the main character Sarah to remain engaged in the tale. I think writing strong and authentic characters is a strength of this writer and is certainly evident in her other books.
Unlike many thrillers these days, this plot was somewhat credible which added to the impact.
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good thriller!!
Absolutely loved the characters, the plot, the tension - impossible to put it down
What got my eye about this book is the cover (it's creepy) and the title, 214 Palmer Street. Did something happen at that address, or is something ghastly going to happen?.
I quite liked it, but the plot wasn't that strong for me, once the (famously topic from other thriller novels) bomb shelter was mentioned, I instantly thought "right, there has to be something down there or something dreadful happened there" but it's up to you to find out. There are twists that got me off guard, but as I said earlier, the plot was a bit weak.
Don't let this review deter you from reading it, if you're looking for a quick read and not too taxing to the mind, grab it.
Thanks to NetGalley and the Bookouture for the chance to read it.
I appreciated the complex story and all the twists and turns, but this plot wasn't for me. With a secret this bad and kept for so long, I felt like the characters weren't great at covering it up in the end. The different perspectives and time periods were also a little much at times, and it took me a while to understand the "Her" perspective. Thank you, NetGalley.
You go into this book thinking it is going to be one thing, but then after a few chapters of reading, you realise that it isn't going the way you thought it would, and instead, it is probably going to be better.
I thought that this was going to follow Sarah maybe being kidnapped and held against her will, or even Sarah taking out revenge on the people living in the said house she has been spotted in, but it went in a different direction, and it clicked about 20% where this book was going to end up.
I knew straight away that the bomb shelter was going to be hiding something, and I still don't know if I believe the story that we were told. I think maybe certain people can now twist the original story now that the people in the picture have 'changed'.
Overall,, would highly recommend to anyone looking for a fast paced thriller that will keep you guessing.
(Will update with blog and social posts when live)
An easy read that I finished fairly quickly.
Predictable in places, but kept my interest throughout and I found the ending satisfying.
I can never say no to a good Domestic Thriller. This fits the bill. 214 Palmer Street was a quick read. I actually was sad it ended. I wanted to know the rest of the story and how the main character went on with her life. I don't like to give away any plots but I would recommend reading.
Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read 214 Palmer Street by Karen McQuestion.
