Thanks NetGalley, Bookouture and Miranda Smith for an ARC to review.
Cara, Rachel and Molly gather to farwell their father after his sudden death. The sisters were still grief-stricken after their mom's death six month earlier.
While processing their grief they are struggling to digest the horrors they discovered in their father's shed.
At first, you'd think that the story is all revealed and there is nothing left to the plot.
On the contrary, you'd keep following the sisters quest to know if the father they loved was the Gemini monster. And if so, who is continuing the legacy?
Engaging page turner with several twists.
“The Killer’s Family” by Miranda Smith is a mystery/thriller/family drama book. It’s a lot rolled into one book - and it’s a bit of an interestingly crazy ride. The book tells the story of three sisters who discover that their father was a serial killer. It’s decided to destroy the evidence their father has kept as souvenirs in a fire. However, shortly after their father’s death, copycat murders appear - and they are people close to the sisters. The press believes the serial killer has returned … but only the sisters know the murders are copycat - but who is doing them and why?
Let me just say that the IDEA for this book was great - discovering a parent (or sibling even) is a serial murderer - drama! While I didn’t agree with a number of the choices made in this book (burn the evidence, don’t tell the authorities (when one of you is married to a policeman????), worry about cancel culture, and make poor choices in general), some I understood. I wasn’t too crazy about the repeated information between chapters and, sad to say, I had a difficult time keeping the sisters apart, though toward the middle of the book I finally was able to do so. The timing of someone’s appearance I found a bit difficult to swallow - and also why in the world did Cora (again!) keep this hidden from her husband? The part leading up to the “big reveal” I found a bit fast paced, though the pieces kinda fit together. In an odd way, I think this book would have made a better video than a book - the reader then could’ve seen things opposed to being told things (if that makes any sense). Great idea, but the execution was just okay for me … if you like to read twisty, lots of red herrings, family drama books - this one might be up your alley. This is the second book I've read by this author, so Ms. Smith is an author I'll most likely read a book by again.
Losing a parent is always very hard. You have known them and loved them your whole life. They helped you become the person you are now.
Then you find something out that turns your world upside down. It cannot be possible, can it? You don’t want to believe it, but doubt has crept into your mind. What if, though…
How you wished you could unknow what you know now. How you wish you never discovered this.
That’s what happened to the three sisters Molly, Cara and Rachel. Each one tries to deal with it in their own way. And that’s why friends were invented. If you are feeling alone, with no one you can count on anymore, that one true friend is always there. Giving you a shoulder to cry on or being there for you to confide in to make you feel better.
The revelations were supposed to be the end of something, but it seems like someone does not agree with that.
OMG, who did I not suspect in this book? It felt like I was adrift at sea in the middle of a storm.
It’s crazy to realise the author can steer you in one direction to make you do a u turn a few moments later, but it’s great at the same time.
I loved this story. My mouth fell open more than once. I am looking forward to the next book by this author. 5 stars
Thank you
This brilliant little book had me on the edge of my seat. It's about a trio of sisters discovering that their father is a serial killer after he dies. I don't normally read books about serial killers, this one is still fun and doesn't take itself too seriously. The ending was perfect. Thanks for the advance review copy.
THE KILLER'S FAMILY by Miranda Smith kept me glued to my Kindle.
The three Martin Sisters Cara, Rachel and Molly each are in a fog of grief when their dad suddenly passes away. Also they lost their mother six months before that.
One night they stumble across some things that will make them rethink everything and everyone they once loved. The sisters start going down a dangerous path searching for some answers.
A path of lies, secrets, loss and in the end somewhat coming back together again.
Miranda Smith wrote this story so well. I was intrigued from the very start of this novel.
All three characters were interesting in their own way, really I liked them all.
I did enjoy getting inside the mind of each one.
And getting to see and hear what they were thinking and feeling.
We get the POVs from each sister and I liked that.
The plot twist was crazy! So insane!
I wasn't expecting that twist at all.
Because Smith leads you to think one way then Bam.... This happens. It was fun!
Something else I loved was how each chapter there was high anticipation. (Well it was for me anyway) she made it to where at the end of each chapter something crazy or shocking happened and I had to start the next one just to see. This book does that!
My only critique would be the ending. (Leaving it at that) because I don't want to ruin it.
I wished there was more.
Overall, this book was great. It held my attention. The writing was done very well. And the twist was wild!
Highly recommend this one!
Bookouture,
Thank you so much for this eARC.
I will post elsewhere closer to pub date.
First of all I'd like to say thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me an earc of this book.
Three sisters come together to grieve for their father, they've lost their mim due to cancer a few months ago and now they've lost their father.
But then they discovered a shocking thing about their father. He may or may not be a serial killer. Now, can they grieve his death by their heart?
The more shocking thing is someone in this family knows more than they're showing... someone isn't telling the truth.
The only problem I've found with this book is that there are three POV of three sisters. In my opinion two povs would be sufficient but the story is really good.
Good aspects : storyline, settings and scenes.
Bad aspects : multi pov which is a bit confusing.
Verdict : a good novel.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. IFYKYK, my reviews are always honest, ARC or no ARC.
I'm breaking down my overall rating into three categories: writing, plot, and endings. These are the magic 3s (to me OK).
Writing: 2/5 | Plot: 1/5 | Ending: GURL BYE
THE PLOT
Three sisters are grieving their dad when they realize he may or may not be a serial killer. When another woman is murdered in similar fashion, they wonder what tf is going on.
MY OPINION
Le sigh. J'adore a serial killer, and even better, POV from the serial killer's family. This plot had so much potential, but flopped as hard as. Da Baby's latest album. I don't want to waste too much energy ranting about this one because I'm at the airport, tryna get into vacation mode, so I'll keep and short-ish and not so sweet.
Were the 3 alternating sister POVs necessary? Absolutely not. It was so repetitive. There was also a lot of boo-boo "foreshadowing" aka "HEY STICK AROUND BECAUSE SOMETHING BRAZY IS GONNA HAPPEN. PLS DON'T DNF. SOMETHING IS GONNA HAPPEN. I PROMISE."
The repetitive writing spoiled any enjoyment I could've found in the plot. The only good thing about the ending was that it ended.
PROS AND CONS
Pros: Promising synopsis
Cons: Everything else. Fail.
The Killer's Family by Miranda Smith is every bit as compelling and addictive as you would expect it to be if you are at all familiar with the author's previous work. A twisted tale that is fast-paced and will keep you guessing, you will devour this latest from the talented Ms Smith.
Three sisters come together to grieve the deaths of both of their parents within a single year. It is a difficult reality with which to cope but at least they have each other to help weather the storm. While looking through their father's belongings as they are cleaning out his shed, they will make a discovery that is so shocking it is almost impossible to process, and a written confession that will cast doubt on who their father really was. What to do with this information is debated, as the sisters struggle to reconcile this with what they have always known about the loving father with whom they have shared their lives.
This is a craftily spun tale that virtually demands to be consumed as a satisfying whole.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
The Killer’s Family is a great, spellbinding thriller. Three sisters, Molly, Katelyn, and Cara lose their parents within a year of each other. Then they stumble across a shocking secret about their father. He was a serial killer. Over the next year, the secret tears at each of the sisters. With each one having a secret. However, the secrets, when revealed are not what the reader suspect.
And there more to come. I read feverishly, trying to figure out the puzzle. Ultimately, some truths are revealed within the family. One sister takes fate into her own hands, which is a cliffhanger!!
I suspect a sister, but the answer isn’t given. AAAH!
Good writing by Smith!
Great book! I definitely enjoyed reading this one! This book has suspense, intrigue, action and a great who done it! The storyline was very interesting and flowed nicely! I highly recommend reading this book! Its well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
Delectable fast pace thriller! The story immediately draws the reader in with an engaging plot. The main character was easy to like and you instantly want to know what’s going on with her. I highly recommend this story!
Three sisters have just lost their father. A short few months ago their mother died of cancer so it is left to the women to go through both parents' belongings. On the night of the funeral, unable to sleep, they wander into their fathers shed. What they accidentally find leaves them bewildered. Could their father have been a killer? If so, who is now behind the recent spate of killings that appear to surround them? Someone knows more than they are letting on and why is this happening?
Oh my life! Within a few pages I was racing through this- to me a sign of skillful writing and an excellent plot. I couldn't see who or why and felt the bewilderment of the sisters and the tension between the pages. A man they loved and thought they could trust died suddenly and then the reveal of who he could possibly be. A well thought out, cleverly crafted plot with likeable characters (or not!) and a real page turner. Twists, turns, clever and captivating. An enthralling read
