With tropes like foodie romance, great friendships, hate to love trope, and best friend's brother I was immediately sold! Much of this book revolved around food so I was in a constant state of craving the mouth-watering masterpieces. I wished to be friends with Serenity so I could be a permanent invite to her supper club. Serenity was one of those people got a long with everyone except for the newbie she met at the grocery store. Immediate dislike. He just rubbed her the wrong way. Wouldn't you know it, he's her new next door neighbor and her friend Andrea's brother Grayson. Before hate turned love, she beaned him in the head with a container of brownies. Grays tries to right his wrongs and before long they're sharing meals and so much more. I was hooked into this story because of food but the author's talent for writing kept me rooted to the end. I'm so glad I took a chance on this new to me author!
I received an advance copy of this book at my request and voluntarily left this review.
Wow, far exceeded my expectations. This is a perfect example of why I fell in love with this genre so many years ago, lots of things were left to the imagination back then but in this case this story opens up the characters and fits me right into the story, my experience doesn't matched theirs but, as the reader I could feel them fall in love and rode right along with them. They made me laugh, blush and tear-up with the warm of their happiness. Totally captivated me, couldn't stop reading. One of the best I've ever read! I received a free copy and voluntarily chose to leave this review.
Thank you to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the advanced reading copy of this book. Review contains my own thoughts and opinions.
A Table for You features the story of Serenity and Gabriel, a big city turned small town pediatric nurse and big city app developer who is in town to help his grandmother. Serenity is good friends with Gabriel’s sister and they are neighbors. Both have been left reeling from past toxic relationships and are not looking to get involved.
There are lots of amazing food descriptions throughout the book and recipes in the back! Hooray!
A Table for Two me smile, swoon, and tear up a bit. Gabriel is a top-tier book boyfriend and Serenity is the heroine you want to be best friends with immediately. I see potential for more books about this friend group and would love stories about them. While this is my first Sheryl Lister book, it certainly won’t be the last.
Serenity Wheeler is an exceptional nurse and a wonderful cook and lives in a small town. Her group of friends started Serenity's Supper Club. Every few weeks she cooks a fantastic big dinner. Her nextdoor neighbor and friend Andrea gets a big promotion and is moving to Seattle. Her big brother Gabriel is coming from Atlanta to take care of their Grandma.
Serenity used to be in a bad relationship and she's not ready for love of any kind. Gabriel is a big city boy and not looking to settle down in a small town. He thinks he can get grandma to leave her house and friends to his 2 bedroom apartment in Atlanta. *Insert eye roll here.
This was a very good romance. I loved that this was a black romance and we definitely need more. I enjoyed the enemies to lovers trope.
Thank you NetGalley, Sheryl Lister and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the ARC of A Table for Two. This is my personal review.
I love a good romance, and this was exactly what I enjoy when reading one. The enemy to lover’s story line in this book touched my heart. The author did a wonderful job with writing characters that I really liked.
Serenity and Gabriel fit so perfectly together. The words just flowed off the pages and right into my heart. Oh, and the food in the story made my mouth water as I was reading.
This is a story I would love to see made into a Hallmark movie.
I have found a new author and will be reading more form her.
A Table For Two is the most adorable romance for any foodie out there. If you’re looking for a book that will make your stomach growl after every chapter this book is for you. I would do anything to be part of Serenity’s supper club! The friendships, the romance, the heartache… it was all perfect. I don’t want to give any spoilers away so I’ll just leave it at that. 5 stars hands down.
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily posting a review. All opinions are my own.
A Table for Two is a pretty cute small-town romance. I really liked the emphasis on friendship for both leads in particular, and it provides fertile ground for a potential series going forward…especially if the food remains a constant.
Serenity and Gabriel are both pretty decent characters. Serenity has been going through a rough breakup and is reluctant to commit again. And Gabriel has a lovely relationship with his grandma, and wants to try to convince her to move back to Atlanta with him.
The romance just didn’t gel with me. The two have great chemistry, the wounds of Serenity’s previous relationship made for a reasonable obstacle to wanting something serious again. But with that and Gabriel’s lack of plans to stay, I didn’t feel like there was much in the way of reasons that they should change to contrast them. I think I’m really just getting burned by these “let’s have a fling to get it out of our system and then go our separate ways” books. I feel like it rarely gives me the results I feel like I should feel, because I want more in the way of emotional intimacy. I also really wanted more consistent tension, as it was promoted as “enemies to lovers.”
While I found this book rather underwhelming, I can see why the tropes and the “formulas” here work for some people. And given the peripheral stuff, I’m not opposed to reading more from Lister, depending on the premise.
A table for two is my first book by the author and what a delightful read it was.
I love enemies to lovers trope and this one surely ticked all the boxes in a great story.
The close family members, the small town vibe and all the ups and downs along with some steamy moments that I was so there for it, everything builds up to the well deserved happily ever after.
Perfect for a summer read past time.
Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy
If author Sheryl Lister isn’t on your radar, she should be. A Table for Two is Lister’s latest romance novel and it was a joy to read.
The characters are loveable and relatable. They are reminiscent of those Hallmark Movie Channel families living in a small cozy town where everybody knows your name, and everyone is like family.
The story follows the enemies to friends to lovers trope. It got a bit steamy in some places. But that just added some needed spice to the narrative.
Unlike some other romance novels, there isn’t a long and drawn out breakup and that was a refreshing change. The pacing from breakup to makeup was just right and this certainly made for a better flow.
A Table for Two is the perfect enemies to lovers romance that made me feel good all over. Five stars.
I received a digital ARC from Forever (Grand Central Publishing) through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
Are you a food hound? A sucker for romance? Then Table for Two will satisfy your appetite. I was hungry while reading it due to all the great food that is prepared and consumed plus the romance side. There is plenty of cooking and heat outside of the kitchen. Serenity is anything but calm after her first encounter with unangelic Gabriel. But they decide to just casually see each other and of course we all know, or hope we know, where that will end up.
Lister’s book is all about setting aside fears, stepping into the unknown, and surrounding oneself with a great community of friends. I loved the banter and guff Gabriel’s friends continually gave him.
Open that wine, serve up the food and crack open this book!
Sure it's gonna be a love story between Serenity and Gabriel but it's also a love story with food. Lots and lots of food. Serenity, a nurse, loves to cook and bake so she runs a supper club. Gabriel is in Firefly to convince his grandmother to move back to Atlanta, where he's a computer programmer, with him. She doesn't want to and then Gabriel isn't too sure he wants to leave either, thanks to Serenity. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Fans of the genre will enjoy this for the characters and, well, the food. It's light and fun.
While I’m a sucker for books revolving around food, the romance in this one was much slower than I would have liked and felt like it dragged. I knew where it was headed the whole time and felt as though something unpredictable would happen, but it didn’t. Not my favorite.
Sweet, open door, basic romance. Serenity Wheeler has a supper club where she gathers friends for delicious food. One of her good friends and neighbor is moving but her brother is coming to town and she ask Serenity to welcome him. Things start off on the wrong foot but it is quickly righted. Gabriel Cunningham plans to be in the small town near Napa only long enough to convince his grandma to relocate with him back to his home base of Atlanta. But grandma isn’t budging and he didn’t plan on his fine new neighbor.
This is a very sweet romance but there isn’t much to it. Serenity needs to get over the insecurities created by her old boyfriend. And the major obstacle is Gabriel’s desire to return to Atlanta. He is a computer designer and he is finding he it getting more done further away from the office so that doesn’t seem to be a big dilemma. All the characters are nice but there isn’t anything that stands out or that I will remember.
One thing that is mentioned over and over is the food. What they are eating or cooking for each other. If you’re a foodie you can probably add an extra star to your reading enjoyment. To me this is a fine story but it doesn’t immediately make me want to look previous works from the author. Thank you to NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for and eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC for an exchange for an honest review.
Loved it, beautiful cover and great story.
Sheryl Lister has once again given her readers a wonderful story. The characters were engaging and the story flowed effortlessly. The secondary characters were also a delight and added to the story. I can see other characters branching out from this story.
Thank you NetGalley for my ebook, Table for Two, by Sheryl Lister. This book for me was just eh. There was no real story, no plot and the characters didn’t have much personality. I’m not into food and food seemed to be constantly discussed in detail. The story dragged on. Sorry, I did not enjoy it. I’ve read her other books and liked them.
I love this story that is the perfect blend of food, friends, family and amour. Talented writer, Sheryl Lister, introduces her readers to Serenity Wheeler, and her friends who make up Serenity’s Supper Club. These ladies get together and bond over good food, courtesy of our heroine, Serenity. The small town of Firefly Lake, California is the setting for this entertaining story. One of the supper club ladies is leaving, and her brother is moving to Firefly Lake to be close to their grandmother. Enter Gabriel Cunningham, software engineer, who moves from Atlanta to be close to his seventy-eight-year-old Nana.
As it happens Gabriel moves close to Serenity, and they not only form a bond over food, but their attraction to each other grows. I love how Ms Lister develops Serenity and Gabriel’s relationship over their love of cooking. If you are a foodie, this is certainly the story for you. The descriptions of the meals that they prepare are mouth-watering. I also love the slow-simmer of Serenity and Gabriel’s love journey. This is an excellent summer read, and I recommend it for your reading pleasure.
This is a good book. The two main characters are Serenity and Gabriel. Serenity is a nurse and Gabriel is software developer. Gabriel is in town to look after his grandmother. He is next door neighbor to Serenity. There is an instant attraction. They each have trust issues it together they work them out and fall in love.
Let me start by saying how much I love a small town romance! This book was so sweet and cute and I loved the chemistry between Serenity and Gabriel, As much as they tried, they could not fight off the growing attraction and love they had for one another. It gave me hallmark movie vibes with some spice. And all the food that was mentioned sounded amazing, It definitely made me hungry lol The ending was perfect and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.
3.5 stars
Serenity is a nurse who shares her love for food with her friends. Gabriel is a computer nerd, who has a soft spot for food. You know how this story goes! Yet in this small town, Gabriel has no desire to stay yet with this connection how could they stop falling in love?
What a cute setting and I love the idea of food, yet I think a bit of the downfall was the amount of food in this book. I think the connection between these two was obvious, both were such likable characters. It was a bit of a slow-burn, and with the pacing, at times it was a little too slow.
